Classifying additive smooth Fano toric varieties

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. An irreducible algebraic variety $X$ over $\mathbb{K}$ of dimension $n$ is called additive if it admits a regular action of the additive group $(\mathbb{K}^n, +)$ with an open orbit, and uniquely additive if this action is unique up to isomorphism. Huang and the second author have previously determined all additive smooth Fano toric threefolds. Here we determine all additive and uniquely additive smooth Fano toric varieties of dimension up to $6$ by computational means, and give a detailed classification for dimension up to $4$. To this effect, we introduce the AdditiveToricVarieties package for Macaulay2, a software system for algebraic geometry and commutative algebra, with methods for working with additive group actions on complete toric varieties. Our work relies on results by Arzhantsev, Dzhunusov and Romaskevich, who relate the existence and uniqueness of such actions to conditions on the Demazure roots of the fans corresponding to the toric varieties. We also prove that every smooth complete toric variety of Picard rank two is additive.

Cyclotomic generating functions, empty weighted complete intersections and positivity

We give a sufficient combinatorial condition for the non-negativity of the coefficients of polynomial quotients of products of $q$-integers, also known as cyclotomic generating functions (CGFs). This slightly extends work by Iano-Fletcher, Pizzato, Sano and Tasin, who studied this condition as a criterion for quasismoothness of complete intersections in weighted projective spaces. As a consequence, we solve a problem by Billey and Swanson, prove most cases of an unpublished conjecture by Stanton and most cases of two conjectures by Gatzweiler and Krattenthaler. We also study sufficient conditions given by structural properties of the division lattice.

Embeddings of weighted projective spaces

Let $X$ be a projective toric variety of dimension $n$ and let $L$ be a ample line bundle on $X$. For $k \geq 0$, it is in general difficult to determine whether $L^{\otimes k}$ is very ample and whether it additionally gives a projectively normal embedding. These two properties are equivalent to the very ampleness, respectively normality, of the corresponding polytope. By a result of Ewald-Wessels, both statements are classically known to hold for $k \geq n - 1$. We study embeddings of weighted projective spaces $\mathbb{P}(a_0, ..., a_n)$ via their corresponding rectangular simplices $Δ(λ_1, ..., λ_n)$. We give multiple criteria (depending on arithmetic properties of the weights $a_i$) to obtain bounds for the power $k$ which are sharp in many cases. We also introduce combinatorial tools that allow us to systematically construct families exhibiting extremal behaviour. These results extend earlier work of Payne, Hering and Bruns-Gubeladze.

Color rules for cyclic wreath products and semigroup algebras from projective toric varieties

We introduce the notion of "color rules" for computing class functions of $Z_k \wr S_n$, where $Z_k$ is the cyclic group of order $k$ and $S_n$ is the symmetric group on $n$ letters. Using a general sign-reversing involution and a map of order $k$, we give a combinatorial proof that the irreducible decomposition of these class functions is given by a weighted sum over semistandard tableaux in the colors. Since using two colors at once is also a color rule, we are consequently able to decompose arbitrary tensor products of representations whose characters can be computed via color rules. This method extends to class functions of $G \wr S_n$ where $G$ is a finite abelian group. We give a number of applications, including decomposing tensor powers of the defining representation, along with a combinatorial proof of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for $Z_k \wr S_n$. Our main application is to the study of the linear action of $Z_k \wr S_n$ on bigraded affine semigroup algebras arising from the product of projective toric varieties. In the case of the product of projective spaces, our methods give the decomposition of these bigraded characters into irreducible characters, thus deriving equivariant generalizations of Euler-Mahonian identities.
