Criticality enabled long-range order in a U(1)-symmetric spin-1 Heisenberg chain with biquadratic interactions

In a recent paper Nahum argued on the basis of a renormalization-group analysis that, contrary to standard lore, ground states of 1D spin chains with short-range interactions can spontaneously break U(1) ``easy-plane'' spin rotation symmetry. True long-range order of $(S^x,S^y)$ arises at the phase transition between two quasi-long-range-ordered phases. Here we present detailed numerical results for an anisotropic spin-1 chain model. We find a magnetization exponent $β\approx0.29$, consistent with the $ε$-expansion prediction $β\approx0.28$, a divergence of the Luttinger parameter on approaching the transition from both sides with an exponent that we relate to Nahum's transition, and finite-size spectra consistent with a dynamical critical exponent $z\approx2$. Our results support the critical behavior predicted by Nahum's field theory.

Exact Quantum Many-Body Scars by a generalized Matrix-Product Ansatz

We construct exact eigenstates of quantum many-body systems with Hamiltonians that are not frustration-free in matrix product form, based on a local error cancellation ansatz motivated by the Derrida-Evans-Hakim-Pasquier method for finding the stationary state of the asymmetric simple exclusion process. We demonstrate the approach with explicit examples in both one and two spatial dimensions.

Interacting hydrodynamic modes in spinless fermions with dephasing noise

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of spinless fermions with dephasing noise in the framework of a many-particle Lindblad equation. Using a mapping to the exactly solvable one-dimensional Hubbard model with purely imaginary tunneling amplitude we analyze the Heisenberg-picture dynamics of operators quartic in fermions and determine their hydrodynamic projections. We construct the relevant diffusive eigenoperators explicitly and show that, in the quartic sector, they can be interpreted as interacting pairs of bilinear hydrodynamic modes. As a consequence, translationally invariant quartic operators generically exhibit non-vanishing diffusive late-time tails, unlike translationally invariant bilinears. Our results show that the hydrodynamic tails of microscopic operators cannot in general be inferred from symmetry constraints or coarse-grained fluctuating hydrodynamics alone; they also depend crucially on the spatial structure and effective size of the hydrodynamic eigenoperators.

Complexity of Quantum Trajectories

Open quantum systems can be described by unraveling Lindblad master equations into ensembles of quantum trajectories. Here we investigate how the complexity of such trajectories is affected by conservation laws and other dynamical constraints of the underlying Lindblad evolution. We characterize this complexity using a data-driven approach based on the intrinsic dimension, defined as the minimal number of variables required to encode the information contained in a data set. Applying this framework to several systems, including dissipative variants of the quantum top and of the XXZ chain, we find that the intrinsic dimension is sensitive to the structure of their dynamics. The Lindblad evolution in these systems is typically chaotic; in particular, we report new signatures of autonomous chaos in the quantum top. At specific parameter values, however, additional constraints arise: the dynamics becomes integrable, exhibits Hilbert-space fragmentation, or develops a closed BBGKY hierarchy, leading to pronounced minima in the intrinsic dimension. Our approach results in an unsupervised probe of the complexity of dissipative quantum systems that is sensitive to chaos and ergodicity breaking phenomena beyond the initial transient regime.

Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics of interacting integrable models by Monte Carlo sampling Lehmann representations

Determining the dynamics of interacting integrable many-particle quantum systems at finite times after homogeneous quantum quenches is a long-standing challenge. We present a Monte Carlo sampling scheme that numerically evaluates the Lehmann representation for time-dependent expectation values of local operators, allowing us to access system sizes and times significantly beyond the reach of existing methods. The approach accommodates both the full Lehmann sum and the Quench Action formalism. We benchmark against exact results for non-interacting lattice and continuum models and short-time results at weak interactions, finding excellent agreement. We apply the method to quantum quenches from a Bose-Einstein condensate in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model and determine the time evolution of the order parameter for a wide range of interaction strengths. We discuss the emergence of a "sign problem" for more general dynamical correlators and setups.

Linear response and exact hydrodynamic projections in Lindblad equations with decoupled Bogoliubov hierarchies

We consider a class of spinless-fermion Lindblad equations that exhibit decoupled BBGKY hierarchies. In the cases where particle number is conserved, their late time behaviour is characterized by diffusive dynamics, leading to an infinite temperature steady state. Some of these models are Yang-Baxter integrable, others are not. The simple structure of the BBGKY hierarchy makes it possible to map the dynamics of Heisenberg-picture operators on few-body imaginary-time Schrödinger equations with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We use this formulation to obtain exact hydrodynamic projections of operators quadratic in fermions, and to determine linear response functions in Lindbladian non-equilibrium dynamics.

Exact strong zero modes in quantum circuits and spin chains with non-diagonal boundary conditions

We construct exact strong zero mode operators (ESZM) in integrable quantum circuits and the spin-1/2 XXZ chain for general open boundary conditions, which break the bulk U(1) symmetry of the time evolution operators. We show that the ESZM is localized around one of the boundaries and induces infinite boundary coherence times. Finally, we prove that the ESZM becomes spatially non-local under the map that relates the spin-1/2 XXZ chain to the asymmetric simple exclusion process, which suggests that it does not play a significant role in the dynamics of the latter.

Finite temperature single-particle Green's function in the Lieb-Liniger model

We develop a Monte Carlo sampling algorithm to numerically evaluate the Lehmann representation for the finite temperature single-particle Green's function in the repulsive Lieb-Liniger model. This allows us to determine the spectral function in the full range of temperatures and interactions, as well as in generalized Gibbs ensembles. We test our results against known results for dynamics at infinite interaction strength and static correlators, and find excellent agreement.

Strong zero modes in integrable spin-S chains

We derive exact strong zero mode (ESZM) operators for integrable spin-S chains with open boundary conditions and a boundary field. Their locality properties are generally weaker than in the previously known cases, but they still imply infinite coherence times in the vicinity of the edges. We explain how such integrable chains possess multiple ground states describing a first-order quantum phase transition, and that the odd number of such states for integer S makes the weaker locality properties necessary. We make contact with more traditional approaches by showing how the ESZM for S=1/2 acts on energy eigenstates given by solutions of the Bethe equations.

Lifted TASEP: long-time dynamics, generalizations, and continuum limit

We investigate the lifted TASEP and its generalization, the GL-TASEP. We analyze the spectral properties of the transition matrix of the lifted TASEP using its Bethe ansatz solution, and use them to determine the scaling of the relaxation time (the inverse spectral gap) with particle number. The observed scaling with particle number was previously found to disagree with Monte Carlo simulations of the equilibrium autocorrelation times of the structure factor and of other large-scale density correlators for a particular value of the pullback $α_{\rm crit}$. We explain this discrepancy. We then construct the continuum limit of the lifted TASEP, which remains integrable, and connect it to the event-chain Monte Carlo algorithm. The critical pullback $α_{\rm crit}$ then equals the system pressure. We generalize the lifted TASEP to a large class of nearest-neighbor interactions, which lead to stationary states characterized by non-trivial Boltzmann distributions. By tuning the pullback parameter in the GL-TASEP to a particular value we can again achieve a polynomial speedup in the time required to converge to the steady state. We comment on the possible integrability of the GL-TASEP.

Out-of-equilibrium full counting statistics in Gaussian theories of quantum magnets

We consider the probability distributions of the subsystem (staggered) magnetization in ordered and disordered models of quantum magnets in D dimensions. We focus on Heisenberg antiferromagnets and long-range transverse-field Ising models as particular examples. By employing a range of self-consistent time-dependent mean-field approximations in conjunction with Holstein-Primakoff, Dyson-Maleev, Schwinger boson and modified spin-wave theory representations we obtain results in thermal equilibrium as well as during non-equilibrium evolution after quantum quenches. To extract probability distributions we derive a simple formula for the characteristic function of generic quadratic observables in any Gaussian theory of bosons.

Decay of long-lived oscillations after quantum quenches in gapped interacting quantum systems

The presence of long-lived oscillations in the expectation values of local observables after quantum quenches has recently attracted considerable attention in relation to weak ergodicity breaking. Here we focus on an alternative mechanism that gives rise to such oscillations in a class of systems that support kinematically protected gapped excitations at zero temperature. An open question in this context is whether such oscillations will ultimately decay. We resolve this issue by considering spin models that can be mapped to systems of weakly interacting fermions, which in turn are amenable to an analysis by standard methods based on the BBGKY hierarchy. We find that there is a time scale beyond which the oscillations start to decay, which grows as the strength of the quench is made small.

Lifted TASEP: a Bethe ansatz integrable paradigm for non-reversible Markov chains

Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), the field of stochastic algorithms built on the concept of sampling, has countless applications in science and technology. The overwhelming majority of MCMC algorithms are time-reversible and satisfy the detailed-balance condition, just like physical systems in thermal equilibrium. The underlying Markov chains typically display diffusive dynamics, which leads to a slow exploration of sample space. Significant speed-ups can be achieved by non-reversible MCMC algorithms exhibiting non-equilibrium dynamics, whose steady states exactly reproduce the target equilibrium states of reversible Markov chains. Such algorithms have had successes in applications but are generally difficult to analyze, resulting in a scarcity of exact results. Here, we introduce the "lifted" TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) as a paradigm for lifted non-reversible Markov chains. Our model can be viewed as a second-generation lifting of the reversible Metropolis algorithm on a one-dimensional lattice and is exactly solvable by an unusual kind of coordinate Bethe ansatz. We establish the integrability of the model and present strong evidence that the lifting leads to faster relaxation than in the KPZ universality class.

A simple theory for quantum quenches in the ANNNI model

In a recent numerical study by Haldar et al. (Phys. Rev. X 11, 031062) it was shown that signatures of proximate quantum critical points can be observed at early and intermediate times after certain quantum quenches. Said work focused mainly on the case of the axial next-nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model. Here we construct a simple time-dependent mean-field theory that allows us to obtain a quantitatively accurate description of these quenches at short times, which for reasons we explain remains a fair approximation at late times (with some caveats). Our approach provides a simple framework for understanding the reported numerical results as well as fundamental limitations on detecting quantum critical points through quench dynamics. We moreover explain the origin of the peculiar oscillatory behaviour seen in various observables as arising from the formation of a long-lived bound state.

Divergent nonlinear response from quasiparticle interactions

We demonstrate that nonlinear response functions in many-body systems carry a sharp signature of interactions between gapped low-energy quasiparticles. Such interactions are challenging to deduce from linear response measurements. The signature takes the form of a divergent-in-time contribution to the response -- linear in time in the case when quasiparticles propagate ballistically -- that is absent for free bosonic excitations. We give an intuitive semiclassical picture of this singular behaviour, validated against exact results from a form-factor expansion of the Ising chain and tDMRG simulations in a non-integrable model -- the spin-1 AKLT chain. We comment on extensions of these results to more general settings, finite temperature, and higher dimensions.

BBGKY Hierarchy and Generalised Hydrodynamics

We consider fermions defined on a continuous one-dimensional interval and subject to weak repulsive two-body interactions. We show that it is possible to perturbatively construct an extensive number of mutually compatible conserved charges for any interaction potential. However, the contributions to the densities of these charges at second order and higher are generally non-local and become spatially localized only if the potential fulfils certain compatibility conditions. We prove that the only solutions to the first of these conditions are the Cheon-Shigehara potential (fermionic dual to the Lieb-Liniger model) and the Calogero-Sutherland potentials. We use our construction to show how Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) emerges from the Bogoliubov--Born--Green--Kirkwood--Yvon hierarchy, and argue that GHD in the weak interaction regime is robust under non-integrable perturbations.

Duality between weak and strong interactions in quantum gases

In one dimensional quantum gases there is a well known "duality" between hard core bosons and non-interacting fermions. However, at the field theory level, no exact duality connecting strongly interacting bosons to weakly interacting fermions is known. Here we propose a solution to this long standing problem. Our derivation relies on regularizing the only point-like interaction between fermions in 1D that induces a discontinuity in the wave function proportional to its derivative. In contrast to all known regularisations our potential is weak for small interaction strengths. Crucially, this allows one to apply standard methods of diagrammatic perturbation theory to strongly interacting bosons. As a first application we compute the finite temperature spectral function of the Cheon-Shigehara model, the fermionic model dual to the celebrated Lieb-Liniger model.
