Dynamical Correlations of the Spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ Chain in a Staggered Field

We consider the easy-plane anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain in combined uniform longitudinal and transverse staggered magnetic fields. The low-energy limit of his model is described by the sine-Gordon quantum field theory. Using methods of integrable quantum field theory we determine the various components of the dynamical structure factor. To do so, we derive explicit expressions for all matrix elements of the low-energy projections of the spin operators involving at most two particles. We discuss applications of our results to experiments on one-dimensional quantum magnets.

Local density of states of 1D Mott insulators and CDW states with a boundary

We determine the local density of states (LDOS) of one-dimensional incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) states in the presence of a strong impurity potential, which is modeled by a boundary. We find that the CDW gets pinned at the impurity, which results in a singularity in the Fourier transform of the LDOS at momentum 2k_F. At energies above the spin gap we observe dispersing features associated with the spin and charge degrees of freedom respectively. In the presence of an impurity magnetic field we observe the formation of a bound state localized at the impurity. All of our results carry over to the case of one dimensional Mott insulators by exchanging the roles of spin and charge degrees of freedom. We discuss the implications of our result for scanning tunneling microscopy experiments on spin-gap systems such as two-leg ladder cuprates and 1D Mott insulators.

A test of the g-ology model for one-dimensional interacting Fermi systems

Bosonization predicts that the specific heat, C(T), of a one-dimensional interacting Fermi system is a sum of the specific heats of free collective charge and spin excitations, plus the term with the running backscattering amplitude which flows to zero logarithmically with decreasing T. We verify whether this result is reproduced in the g-ology model. Of specific interest are the anomalous terms in C(T) that depend on the bare backscattering amplitude. We show that these terms can be incorporated into a renormalized spin velocity. We do this by proving the equivalence of the results for C(T) obtained within the g-ology model and by bosonization with velocities obtained by the numerical solution of the Bethe-ansatz equations for the Hubbard model.

Finite-temperature lineshapes in gapped quantum spin chains

We consider the finite-temperature dynamical structure factor (DSF) of gapped quantum spin chains such as the spin one Heisenberg model and the transverse field Ising model in the disordered phase. At zero temperature the DSF in these models is dominated by a delta-function line arising from the coherent propagation of single particle modes. Using methods of integrable quantum field theory we determine the evolution of the lineshape at low temperatures. We show that the line shape is in general asymmetric in energy and becomes Lorentzian only at temperatures far below the gap. We discuss the relevance of our results for the analysis of inelastic neutron scattering experiments on gapped spin chain systems such as CsNiCl_3 and YBaNiO_5.

Dynamical response functions in the quantum Ising chain with a boundary

We determine dynamical response functions $<{\cal O}^\dagger(t,x_1){\cal O}(0,x_2)>$ in the scaling limit of the quantum Ising chain on the half line in the presence of a boundary magnetic field. Using a spectral representation in terms of infinite volume form factors and a boundary state, we derive an expansion for the correlator that is found to be rapidly convergent as long as $|\frac{x_1+x_2}ξ|\agt 0.2$ where $ξ$ is the correlation length. At sufficiently late times we observe oscillatory behaviour of the correlations arbitrarily far away from the boundary. We investigate the effects of the boundary bound state that is present for a range of boundary magnetic fields.

Bethe Ansatz Solution of the Asymmetric Exclusion Process with Open Boundaries

We derive the Bethe ansatz equations describing the complete spectrum of the transition matrix of the partially asymmetric exclusion process with the most general open boundary conditions. For totally asymmetric diffusion we calculate the spectral gap, which characterizes the approach to stationarity at large times. We observe boundary induced crossovers in and between massive, diffusive and KPZ scaling regimes.

Spin dynamics of the quasi two dimensional spin-1/2 quantum magnet Cs_2CuCl_4

We study dynamical properties of the anisotropic triangular quantum antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have established that the dynamical spin correlations cannot be understood within a linear spin wave analysis. We go beyond linear spin wave theory by taking interactions between magnons into account in a 1/S expansion. We determine the dynamical structure factor and carry out extensive comparisons with experimental data. We find that compared to linear spin wave theory a significant fraction of the scattering intensity is shifted to higher energies and strong scattering continua are present. However, the 1/S expansion fails to account for the experimentally observed large quantum renormalization of the exchange energies.

Continuum Limit of the Integrable sl(2/1) 3-\bar{3} Superspin Chain

By a combination of analytical and numerical techniques, we analyze the continuum limit of the integrable 3\otimes\bar{3}\otimes 3\otimes\bar{3}... sl(2/1) superspin chain. We discover profoundly new features, including a continuous spectrum of conformal weights, whose numerical evidence is infinite degeneracies of the scaled gaps in the thermodynamic limit. This indicates that the corresponding conformal field theory has a non compact target space (even though our lattice model involves only finite dimensional representations). We argue that our results are compatible with this theory being the level k=1, `SU(2/1) WZW model' (whose precise definition requires some care). In doing so, we establish several new results for this model. With regard to potential applications to the spin quantum Hall effect, we conclude that the continuum limit of the 3\otimes\bar{3}\otimes 3\otimes\bar{3}... sl(2/1) integrable superspin chain is {\sl not} the same as (and is in fact very different from) the continuum limit of the corresponding chain with two-superspin interactions only, which is known to be a model for the spin quantum Hall effect. The study of possible RG flows between the two theories is left for further study.

Applications of Massive Integrable Quantum Field Theories to Problems in Condensed Matter Physics

We review applications of the sine-Gordon model, the O(3) non-linear sigma model, the U(1) Thirring model, and the O(N) Gross--Neveu model to quasi one-dimensional quantum magnets, Mott insulators, and carbon nanotubes. We focus upon the determination of dynamical response functions for these problems. These quantities are computed by means of form factor expansions of quantum correlation functions in integrable quantum field theories. This approach is reviewed here in some detail.

Haldane-gap chains in a magnetic field

We consider quasi one dimensional spin-1 Heisenberg chains with crystal field anisotropy in a uniform magnetic field. We determine the dynamical structure factor in various limits and obtain a fairly complete qualitative picture of how it changes with the applied field. In particular, we discuss how the width of the higher energy single magnon modes depends on the field. We consider the effects of a weak interchain coupling. We discuss the relevance of our results for recent neutron scattering experiments on the quasi-1D Haldane-gap compound NDMAP.

Dynamical density correlation function of 1D Mott insulators in a magnetic field

We consider the one dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard model at half filling in the presence of a magnetic field. Using field theory techniques we calculate the dynamical density-density correlation function $χ_{nn}(ω,q)$ in the low-energy limit. When excitons are formed, a singularity appears in $χ_{nn}(ω,q)$ at a particular energy and momentum transfer.

Spectral function of a quarter-filled one-dimensional CDW insulator

We consider a one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) insulator formed by Umklapp processes in a quarter-filled band. The spectrum of the model consists of gapless, uncharged excitations carrying spin $\pm 1/2$ (spinons) and gapped, spinless excitations carrying charge $\pm e/2$ (solitons and antisolitons). We calculate the low-energy behaviour of the single-electron Green's function at zero temperature. The spectral function exhibits a rather featureless scattering continuum of two solitons and many spinons. The theory predicts that the gap observed by Angle Resolved Photoemission (ARPES) is twice the activation gap in the dc conductivity. We comment on possible applications to ${\rm PrBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ and to the Bechgaard salts.

Weakly coupled one-dimensional Mott insulators

We consider a model of one-dimensional Mott insulators coupled by a weak interchain tunnelling $t_\perp$. We first determine the single-particle Green's function of a single chain by exact field-theoretical methods and then take the tunnelling into account by means of a Random Phase Approximation (RPA). In order to embed this approximation into a well-defined expansion with a small parameter, the Fourier transform $T_\perp(k)$ of the interchain coupling is assumed to have a small support in momentum space such that every integration over transverse wave vector yields a small factor $κ_0^2 \ll 1$. When \tp(0) exceeds a critical value, a small Fermi surface develops in the form of electron and hole pockets. We demonstrate that Luttinger's theorem holds both in the insulating and in the metallic phases. We find that the quasi-particle residue $Z$ increases very fast through the transition and quickly reaches a value of about $0.4-0.6$. The metallic state close to the transition retains many features of the one-dimensional system in the form of strong incoherent continua.

Finite-temperature dynamical magnetic susceptibility of quasi-one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We study the dynamical response of frustrated, quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets at finite temperatures. We allow for the presence of a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We concentrate on a model of weakly coupled planes of anisotropic triangular lattices. Combining exact results for the dynamical response of one dimensional Heisenberg chains with a Random Phase Approximation (RPA) in the frustrated interchain couplings, we calculate the dynamical susceptibility in the disordered phase. We investigate the instability of the disordered phase to the formation of collective modes. We find a very weak instability to the formation of incommensurate magnetic order and determine the ordering temperature and wave vector. We also determine the effects of uniform magnetic fields on the ordering transition.

Dynamical Properties of one dimensional Mott Insulators

At low energies the charge sector of one dimensional Mott insulators can be described in terms of a quantum Sine-Gordon model. Using exact results derived from integrability it is possible to determine dynamical properties like the frequency dependent optical conductivity. We compare the exact results to perturbation theory and renormalisation group calculations. We also discuss the application of our results to experiments on quasi-1D organic conductors.

Optical conductivity of one-dimensional Mott insulators

We calculate the optical conductivity of one-dimensional Mott insulators at low energies using a field theory description. The square root singularity at the optical gap, characteristic of band insulators, is generally absent and appears only at the Luther-Emery point. We also show that only few particle processes contribute significantly to the optical conductivity over a wide range of frequencies and that the bare perturbative regime is recovered only at very large energies. We discuss possible applications of our results to quasi one-dimensional organic conductors.

On the 3-particle scattering continuum in quasi one dimensional integer spin Heisenberg magnets

We analyse the three-particle scattering continuum in quasi one dimensional integer spin Heisenberg antiferromagnets within a low-energy effective field theory framework. We exactly determine the zero temperature dynamical structure factor in the O(3) nonlinear sigma model and in Tsvelik's Majorana fermion theory. We study the effects of interchain coupling in a Random Phase Approximation. We discuss the application of our results to recent neutron-scattering experiments on the Haldane-gap material ${\rm CsNiCl_3}$.

The fate of spinons in spontaneously dimerised spin-1/2 ladders

We study a weakly coupled, frustrated two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder. For vanishing coupling between the chains, elementary excitations are deconfined, gapless spin-1/2 objects called spinons. We investigate the fate of spinons for the case of a weak interchain interaction. We show that despite a drastic change in ground state, which becomes spontaneously dimerised, spinons survive as elementary excitations but acquire a spectral gap. We furthermore determine the exact dynamical structure factor for several values of momentum transfer.
