The relation between classical and quantum Lyapunov exponent and the bound on chaos in classically chaotic quantum systems

Out-of-Time-Ordered Commutators (OTOCs), representing a key diagnostic for scrambling as a facet of short-time quantum chaos, have attracted wide-ranging interest, from many-body physics to quantum gravity. By means of a suitable form of the Wigner-Moyal expansion, and invoking ensemble equivalence in statistical physics, we provide a consistent approach to the growth rate of the OTOC for many-body systems with chaotic classical limit where both the classical Lyapunov exponent and the quantum nature of the density of states enter. Applying this construction to quantized high-dimensional hyperbolic motion, i.e., a quantum chaotic system that exhibits gravity-like correlation functions in the late-time regime, we compute the OTOC growth rate $\Lambda$ as a function of the number of degrees of freedom, $f$, and inverse temperature, $\beta$. We show that the scaled growth rate, $\Lambda/f$, can be described by a universal function of $f \beta$ and displays a cross-over from classical to quantum behavior as we increase $f$ and/or lower the temperature. In the deep quantum regime of infinite $f$, we find maximally fast scrambling in the sense of the Maldacena-Shenker-Stanford bound on chaos. This elucidates the non-perturbative mechanism underlying the saturation of the bound via quantum contributions to the mean density of states, and it provides further support for this dynamical system as a dual to two-dimensional quantum gravity. In this way, we present first evidence of maximally fast scrambling in a quantum chaotic system with a well-defined classical Hamiltonian limit, without invoking any external mechanism such as (disorder) averaging.

Beyond the ensemble paradigm in low dimensional quantum gravity: Schwarzian density, quantum chaos and wormhole contributions

Based on periodic orbit theory we address the individual-system versus ensemble interpretation of quantum gravity from a quantum chaos perspective. To this end we show that the spectrum of geodesic motion on high-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds, described by the Selberg trace formula, displays a Schwarzian ($\sinh 2\pi\sqrt{E}$) mean level density. Due to its chaotic classical limit, this quantum system also shows all universal signatures of quantum chaos. These two properties imply a possible duality to Jackiw-Teitelboim-type quantum gravity at the level of a single system instead of an ensemble of systems like matrix theories and SYK models. Beyond the universal regime we show how the full wormhole geometry on the gravity side emerges from the discreteness of the set of periodic orbits. Thereby, we take initial steps towards a duality between gravitational and mesoscopic chaotic quantum systems through the topological, respectively, periodic orbit expansions of their correlators.

Unorientable topological gravity and orthogonal random matrix universality

The duality of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and a double scaled matrix integral has led to studies of the canonical spectral form factor (SFF) in the so called $\tau-$scaled limit of large times, $t \to \infty$, and fixed temperature in order to demonstrate agreement with universal random matrix theory (RMT). Though this has been established for the unitary case, extensions to other symmetry classes requires the inclusion of unorientable manifolds in the sum over geometries, necessary to address time reversal invariance, and regularization of the corresponding prime geometrical objects, the Weil-Petersson (WP) volumes. We report here how universal signatures of quantum chaos, witnessed by the fidelity to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, emerge for the low-energy limit of unorientable JT gravity, i.e. the Airy model/topological gravity. To this end, we implement the loop equations for the corresponding dual (double-scaled) matrix model and find the generic form of the Airy WP volumes, supported by calculations using unorientable Kontsevich graphs. In an apparent violation of the gravity/chaos duality, the $\tau-$scaled SFF on the gravity side acquires both logarithmic and power law contributions in $t$, not manifestly present on the RMT side. We show the expressions can be made to agree by means of bootstrapping-like relations hidden in the asymptotic expansions of generalized hypergeometric functions. Thus, we are able to establish strong evidence of the quantum chaotic nature of unorientable topological gravity.

Constraining Weil-Petersson volumes by universal random matrix correlations in low-dimensional quantum gravity

Based on the discovery of the duality between Jackiw-Teitelboim quantum gravity and a double-scaled matrix ensemble by Saad, Shenker and Stanford in 2019, we show how consistency between the two theories in the universal Random Matrix Theory (RMT) limit imposes a set of constraints on the volumes of moduli spaces of Riemannian manifolds. These volumes are given in terms of polynomial functions, the Weil-Petersson volumes, solving a celebrated nonlinear recursion formula that is notoriously difficult to analyze. Since our results imply linear relations between the coefficients of the Weil-Petersson volumes, they therefore provide both a stringent test for their symbolic calculation and a possible way of simplifying their construction. In this way, we propose a long-term program to improve the understanding of mathematically hard aspects concerning moduli spaces of hyperbolic manifolds by using universal RMT results as input.

Path integral renormalisation in loop quantum cosmology

A coarse graining technique akin to block spin transformations that groups together fiducial cells in a homogeneous and isotropic universe has been recently developed in the context of loop quantum cosmology. The key technical ingredient was an SU(1, 1) group and Lie algebra structure of the physical observables as well as the use of Perelomov coherent states for SU(1, 1). It was shown that the coarse graining operation is completely captured by changing group representations. Based on this result, it was subsequently shown that one can extract an explicit renormalisation group flow of the loop quantum cosmology Hamiltonian operator in a simple model with dust-clock. In this paper, we continue this line of investigation and derive a coherent state path integral formulation of this quantum theory and extract an explicit expression for the renormalisation-scale dependent classical Hamiltonian entering the path integral for a coarse grained description at that scale. We find corrections to the non-renormalised Hamiltonian that are qualitatively similar to those previously investigated via canonical quantisation. In particular, they are again most sensitive to small quantum numbers, showing that the large quantum number (spin) description captured by so called "effective equations" in loop quantum cosmology does not reproduce the physics of many small quantum numbers (spins). Our results have direct impact on path integral quantisation in loop quantum gravity, showing that the usually taken large spin limit should be expected not to capture (without renormalisation, as mostly done) the physics of many small spins that is usually assumed to be present in physically reasonable quantum states.

A note on coarse graining and group representations

A coarse graining operation of spatially homogeneous quantum states based on an SU(1,1) Lie group structure has recently been proposed in [1] and used in [2] to compute an explicit renormalisation group flow in the context of loop quantum cosmology. In this note, we explain the group theoretical origin of this procedure and generalise previous results based on these insights. We also highlight how the group theoretical origin of these techniques implies their immediate generalisation to other Lie groups.

Coarse graining as a representation change

We discuss how SU$(1,1)$ coherent states from the discrete series allow for a natural coarse graining operation. The physical application are quantum theories based on a set of three extensive observables whose Poisson algebra is isomorphic to su$(1,1)$. In particular, we show that a Perelomov coherent state with representation label $N j_0$ and spinor label $z$ encodes the physics of $N$ independent subsystems with labels $j_0, z$. This property is suggested by existing results for the expectation values and variances of the observables. We prove that it holds for all higher moments. Our results in particular apply to a recent quantum cosmology model that has been derived using SU(1,1) group theoretic quantisation techniques. For it, it follows that a certain notion of fiducial cell independence holds exactly at the quantum level when using the coherent states.
