Expansion dynamics of interacting bosons in homogeneous lattices in one and two dimensions

We experimentally and numerically investigate the expansion of initially localized ultracold bosons in homogeneous one- and two-dimensional optical lattices. We find that both dimensionality and interaction strength crucially influence these non-equilibrium dynamics. While the atoms expand ballistically in all integrable limits, deviations from these limits dramatically suppress the expansion and lead to the appearance of almost bimodal cloud shapes, indicating diffusive dynamics in the center surrounded by ballistic wings. For strongly interacting bosons, we observe a dimensional crossover of the dynamics from ballistic in the one-dimensional hard-core case to diffusive in two dimensions, as well as a similar crossover when higher occupancies are introduced into the system.

Real-time energy dynamics in spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains

We study the real-time dynamics of the local energy density in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain starting from initial states with an inhomogeneous profile of bond energies. Numerical simulations of the dynamics of the initial states are carried out using the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method. We analyze the time dependence of the spatial variance associated with the local energy density to classify the dynamics as either ballistic or diffusive. Our results are consistent with ballistic behavior both in the massless and the massive phase. We also study the same problem within Luttinger Liquid theory and obtain that energy wave-packets propagate with the sound velocity. We recover this behavior in our numerical simulations in the limit of very weakly perturbed initial states.

Kondo screening cloud in the single-impurity Anderson model: A density matrix renormalization group study

A magnetic moment in a metal or in a quantum dot is, at low temperatures, screened by the conduction electrons through the mechanism of the Kondo effect. This gives rise to spin-spin correlations between the magnetic moment and the conduction electrons, which can have a substantial spatial extension. We study this phenomenon, the so-called Kondo cloud, by means of the density matrix renormalization group method for the case of the single-impurity Anderson model. We focus on the question whether the Kondo screening length, typically assumed to be proportional to the inverse Kondo temperature, can be extracted from the spin-spin correlations. For several mechanisms -- the gate potential and a magnetic field -- which destroy the Kondo effect, we investigate the behavior of the screening cloud induced by these perturbations.

Thermal transport properties of disordered spin-1/2 systems

This work studies heat transport of bond-disordered spin-1/2 chains. As an example, the XX case is analyzed, which corresponds to a model of noninteracting spinless fermions. Within the fermion representation, the single-particle eigenenergies are determined numerically, which allow one to compute transport coefficients. Since the ballistic transport properties of a clean chain are destroyed by disorder, the focus is on the frequency dependence of the thermal conductivity and on a qualitative comparison with the spin conductivity, both at finite temperatures.
