Generic separation for modular invariants

For modular indecomposable representations of a cyclic group $G$ of prime order $p$ we propose a list of polynomial invariants of degree $\leq 3$ that, together with a simple invariant of degree $p$, separate generic orbits and generate the field of rational invariants. A similar result is proven for decomposable representations of $G$.

Vector invariants of permutation groups in characteristic zero

We consider a finite permutation group acting naturally on a vector space $V$ over a field $\Bbbk$. A well known theorem of Göbel asserts that the corresponding ring of invariants $\Bbbk[V]^G$ is generated by invariants of degree at most $\binom{\dim V}{2}$. In this note we show that if the characteristic of $\Bbbk$ is zero then the top degree of vector coinvariants $\Bbbk[V^m]_G$ is also bounded above by $\binom{\dim V}{2}$, which implies the degree bound $\binom{\dim V}{2}+ 1$ for the ring of vector invariants $\Bbbk[V^m]^G$. So Göbel's bound almost holds for vector invariants in characteristic zero as well.

Separating invariants over finite fields

We determine the minimal number of separating invariants for the invariant ring of a matrix group $G < \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We show that this minimal number can be obtained with invariants of degree at most $|G|n(q-1)$. In the non-modular case this construction can be improved to give invariants of degree at most $n(q-1)$. As examples we study separating invariants over the field $\mathbb{F}_2$ for two important representations of the symmetric group

Separating invariants for multisymmetric polynomials

This article studies separating invariants for the ring of multisymmetric polynomials in $m$ sets of $n$ variables over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{K}$. We prove that in order to obtain separating sets it is enough to consider polynomials that depend only on $\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor + 1$ sets of these variables. This improves a general result by Domokos about separating invariants. In addition, for $n \leq 4$ we explicitly give minimal separating sets (with respect to inclusion) for all $m$ in case $\text{char}(\mathbb{K}) = 0$ or $\text{char}(\mathbb{K}) > n$.

Separating Invariants for Two Copies of the Natural $S_n$-Action

This note provides a set of separating invariants for the ring of vector invariants $K[V^2]^{S_n}$ of two copies of the natural $S_n$-representation $V = K^n$ over a field of characteristic 0. This set is much smaller than generating sets of $K[V^2]^{S_n}$. For $n \leq 4$ we show that this set is minimal with respect to inclusion among all separating sets.

Separating Invariants of Finite Groups

This paper studies separating invariants of finite groups acting on affine varieties through automorphisms. Several results, proved by Serre, Dufresne, Kac-Watanabe and Gordeev, and Jeffries and Dufresne exist that relate properties of the invariant ring or a separating subalgebra to properties of the group action. All these results are limited to the case of linear actions on vector spaces. The goal of this paper is to lift this restriction by extending these results to the case of (possibly) non-linear actions on affine varieties. Under mild assumptions on the variety and the group action, we prove that polynomial separating algebras can exist only for reflection groups. The benefit of this gain in generality is demonstrated by an application to the semigroup problem in multiplicative invariant theory. Then we show that separating algebras which are complete intersections in a certain codimension can exist only for 2-reflection groups. Finally we prove that a separating set of size $n + k - 1$ (where $n$ is the dimension of $X$) can exist only for $k$-reflection groups. Several examples show that most of the assumptions on the group action and the variety that we make cannot be dropped.

Polynomial Separating Algebras and Reflection Groups

This note considers a finite algebraic group $G$ acting on an affine variety $X$ by automorphisms. Results of Dufresne on polynomial separating algebras for linear representations of $G$ are extended to this situation. For that purpose, we show that the Cohen-Macaulay defect of a certain ring is greater than or equal to the minimal number $k$ such that the group is generated by $(k+1)$-reflections. Under certain rather mild assumptions on $X$ and $G$ we deduce that a separating set of invariants of the smallest possible size $n = \dim(X)$ can exist only for reflection groups.
