Resolving Photon Numbers Using Ultra-High-Resolution Timing of a Single Low-Jitter Superconducting Nanowire Detector

Photon-number-resolving (PNR) detectors are a key enabling technology in photonic quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate the PNR capacity of conventional superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors by performing ultra-high-resolution time-tagging of the detector-generated electrical pulses. This method provides a viable approach for PNR with high detection efficiency and a high operational repetition rate. We present the implementation of such a PNR detector in the telecom C-band and its characterization by measuring the photon-number statistics of coherent light with tunable intensity. Additionally, we demonstrate the capabilities of the detection method by measuring photon-number correlations of non-classical states.

Enhancing the purity of single photons in parametric down-conversion through simultaneous pump-beam and crystal-domain engineering

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) has shown great promise in the generation of pure and indistinguishable single photons. Photon pairs produced in bulk crystals are highly correlated in terms of transverse space and frequency. These correlations limit the indistinguishability of photons and result in inefficient photon sources. Domain-engineered crystals with a Gaussian nonlinear response have been explored to minimize spectral correlations. Here, we study the impact of such domain engineering on spatial correlations of generated photons. We show that crystals with a Gaussian nonlinear response reduce the spatial correlations between photons. However, the Gaussian nonlinear response is not sufficient to fully eliminate the spatial correlations. Therefore, the development of a comprehensive method to minimize these correlations remains an open challenge. Our solution to this problem involves simultaneous engineering of the pump beam and crystal. We achieve purity of single-photon state up to 99 \% without any spatial filtering. Our findings provide valuable insights into the spatial waveform generated in structured SPDC crystals, with implications for applications such as boson Sampling.

High-Dimensional Entanglement for Quantum Communication in the Frequency Domain

High-dimensional photonic entanglement is a promising candidate for error-protected quantum information processing with improved capacity. Encoding high-dimensional qudits in the carrier frequency of photons combines ease of generation, universal single-photon gates, and compatibility with fiber transmission for high-capacity quantum communication. Recent landmark experiments have impressively demonstrated quantum interference of a few frequency modes, yet the certification of massive-dimensional frequency entanglement has remained an open challenge. This study shows how to harness the large frequency-entanglement inherent in standard continuous-wave spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes. It further reports a record certification of discretized frequency entanglement, combined with a novel approach for certification that is both highly efficient and nonlocally implementable. This technique requires very few measurements and does not require assumptions on the state. The work opens the possibility for utilizing this encoding in quantum communications and in quantum information science in general.

Experimental analysis on image resolution of quantum imaging with undetected light through position correlations

Image resolution of quantum imaging with undetected photons is governed by the spatial correlations existing between the photons of a photon pair that has been generated in a nonlinear process. These correlations allow for obtaining an image of an object with light that never interacted with that object. Depending on the imaging configuration, either position or momentum correlations are exploited. We hereby experimentally analyse how the crystal length and pump waist affect the image resolution when using position correlations of photons that have been generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion in a nonlinear interferometer. Our results support existing theoretical models for the dependency of the resolution on the crystal length. In addition, we probe the resolution of our quantum imaging scheme for varying pump waists over one order of magnitude. This analysis reveals the intricate dependency of the resolution on the strength of the correlations within the biphoton states for parameter combinations in which the crystal lengths are much larger than the involved photon wavelengths. We extend the existing models in this parameter regime to properly take nontrivial effects of finite pump waists into account and demonstrate that they match the experimental results.

Towards metropolitan free-space quantum networks

Quantum communication has seen rapid progress towards practical large-scale networks, with quantum key distribution (QKD) spearheading this development. While fibre based systems have been shown to be well suited for metropolitan scales, suitable fibre infrastructure may not always be in place. Here, we make the case for an entanglement-based free-space quantum network as a practical and efficient alternative for metropolitan applications. We developed a deployable free space QKD system and demonstrated its use in realistic scenarios. For a representative 1.7-km free-space link, we showcase its ad hoc deployability and achieve secure key rates of up to 5.7 kbps, with 2.5 kbps in direct noon sunlight. By extrapolating experimental data, we show that kbps key rates are achievable even for 10-km distances and multi-user scenarios. We anticipate that our work will establish free space networks as a viable solution for metropolitan applications and an indispensable complementary building block in the future global quantum internet.

Adjustable spatial filter for optimal free-space quantum communication round the clock

Free-space quantum communication in daylight relies crucially on spatial filtering. The optimal filter configuration, however, depends on ever-changing link conditions. To this end, we developed an adjustable spatial filter that can be used to change the system field of view on the fly. We demonstrate its use in quantum key distribution over a 1.7-km free-space link. Furthermore, we compare it to filtering with multi-mode fibre coupling. Finally, we extrapolate our results to a broader range of realistic link conditions and show that active field-of-view optimization has the potential to substantially improve the overall secure key output of the system.

Maximizing the Validity of the Gaussian Approximation for the biphoton State from Parametric Downconversion

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is widely used in quantum applications based on photonic entanglement. The efficiency of photon pair generation is often characterized by means of a $sinc(LΔk/2)$-function, where $L$ is the length of the nonlinear medium and $Δk$ the phase mismatch between the pump and down-converted fields. In theoretical investigations, the \textit{sinc} behavior of the phase mismatch has often been approximated by a Gaussian function $\exp{(-αx^2)}$ in order to derive analytical expressions for the SPDC process. Different values have been chosen in the literature for the optimization factor $α$, for instance by comparing the widths of \textit{sinc} and Gaussian functions or the momentum of down-converted photons. As a consequence, different values for $α$ provide different theoretical predictions for the same setup. Therefore, an informed and unique choice of this parameter is necessary. In this work, we present a choice of $α$ which maximizes the validity of the Gaussian approximation. Moreover, we also discuss the so-called \textit{super}-Gaussian and \textit{cosine}-Gaussian approximations as practical alternatives with improved predictive power for experiments.

Generalized description of the spatio-temporal biphoton State in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is a widely used source for photonic entanglement. Years of focused research have led to a solid understanding of the process, but a cohesive analytical description of the paraxial biphoton state has yet to be achieved. We derive a general expression for the spatio-temporal biphoton state that applies universally across common experimental settings and correctly describes the non-separability of spatial and spectral modes. We formulate a criterion on how to decrease the coupling of the spatial from the spectral degree of freedom by taking into account the Gouy phase of interacting beams. This work provides new insights into the role of the Gouy phase in SPDC, and also into the preparation of engineered entangled states for multidimensional quantum information processing.

Ultrabright Polarization-Entangled Photon Pair Source for Frequency-Multiplexed Quantum Communication in Free-Space

The distribution of entanglement via satellite links will drastically extend the reach of quantum networks. Highly efficient entangled photon sources are an essential requirement towards overcoming high channel loss and achieving practical transmission rates in long-distance satellite downlinks. Here we report on an ultrabright entangled photon source that is optimized for long-distance free-space transmission. It operates in a wavelength range that is efficiently detected with space-ready single photon avalanche diodes (Si-SPADs), and readily provides pair emission rates that exceed the detector bandwidth (i.e., the temporal resolution). To overcome this limitation, we demultiplex the photon flux into wavelength channels that can be handled by current single photon detector technology. This is achieved efficiently by using the spectral correlations due to hyper-entanglement in polarization and frequency as an auxiliary resource. Combined with recent demonstrations of space-proof source prototypes, these results pave the way to a broadband long-distance entanglement distribution network based on satellites.

Quantum holography with undetected light

Holography exploits the interference of light fields to obtain a systematic reconstruction of the light fields wavefronts. Classical holography techniques have been very successful in diverse areas such as microscopy, manufacturing technology, and basic science. Extending holographic methods to the level of single photons has been proven challenging, since applying classical holography techniques to this regime pose technical problems. Recently the retrieval of the spatial structure of a single photon, using another photon under experimental control with a well-characterized spatial shape as reference, was demonstrated using the intrinsically non-classical Hong-Ou-Mandel interference on a beam splitter. Here we present a method for recording a hologram of single photons without detecting the photons themselves, and importantly, with no need to use a well-characterized companion reference photon. Our approach is based on quantum interference between two-photon probability amplitudes in a nonlinear interferometer. As in classical holography, the hologram of a single photon allows retrieving the complete information about the "shape" of the photon (amplitude and phase) despite the fact that the photon is never detected.

Clock synchronization with correlated photons

Event synchronisation is a ubiquitous task, with applications ranging from 5G technology to industrial automation and smart power grids. The emergence of quantum communication networks will further increase the demand for precise synchronization in the optical and electronic domains, which implies significant resource overhead, such as the requirement for ultrastable clocks or additional synchronization lasers. Here we show how temporal correlations of energy-time entangled photons may be harnessed for synchronisation in quantum networks. We achieve stable synchronisation jitter <68 ps with as few as 44 correlated detection events per 100-ms data package and demonstrate feasibility in realistic emulated high-loss link scenarios, including atmospheric turbulence. In contrast to previous work, this is accomplished without any external timing reference and only simple crystal oscillators. Our approach replaces the optical and electronic transmission of timing signals with classical communication and computer-aided postprocessing. It can be easily integrated into a wide range of quantum communication networks and could pave the way to future applications in entanglement-based secure time transmission.

GHz-Pulsed Source of Entangled Photons for Reconfigurable Quantum Networks

Entanglement is a universal resource in quantum networks, yet entangled photon sources are typically custom-made for a specific use case. Versatility, both in terms of state modulation and tunability of the temporal properties of the photons, is the key to flexible network architectures and cryptographic primitives that go beyond quantum key distribution. Here, we report on a flexible source design that produces high-quality entanglement in continuous-wave and GHz-rate-pulsed operation modes. Utilizing off-the-shelf optical components, our approach uses a fiber-based Sagnac loop to generate polarization-entangled photons at telecom wavelength with high efficiency and fidelities above 0.99. Phase modulation up to GHz before entangled state generation is also possible for fast entangled state switching. We show phase modulation at 100 MHz with an average fidelity of 0.95. Furthermore, the source 60 nm spectral bandwidth is entirely compatible with fully reconfigurable wavelength-multiplexed quantum networks.

Fully passive entanglement based quantum key distribution scheme

In general, generation of entangled photon pairs and also the random choice of measurement basis can be implemented with passive optical devices in entanglement based quantum key distribution (QKD) system. However, auxiliary random numbers are still mandatory for conducting the privacy amplification procedure. In this paper, we propose a fully passive entanglement based QKD scheme in which certified random bits for privacy amplification are extracted from detection events of measurement-basis-mismatched entangled photon pairs. The privacy of these random bits can be certified by estimating the phase error rate in the sifted key. The idea of extracting certified random numbers from measurement-basis-mismatched photons, can be extended to all practical QKD schemes.

A quantum-enhanced wide-field phase imager

Quantum techniques can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio in optical imaging. Leveraging the latest advances in single photon avalanche diode array cameras and multi-photon detection techniques, here we introduce a super-sensitive phase imager, which uses space-polarization hyper-entanglement to operate over a large field-of-view without the need of scanning operation. We show quantum-enhanced imaging of birefringent and non-birefringent phase samples over large areas, with sensitivity improvements over equivalent classical measurements carried out with equal number of photons. The practical applicability is demonstrated by imaging a biomedical protein microarray sample. Our quantum-enhanced phase imaging technology is inherently scalable to high resolution images, and represents an essential step towards practical quantum imaging.

Strategies for achieving high key rates in satellite-based QKD

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a pioneering quantum technology on the brink of widespread deployment. Nevertheless, the distribution of secret keys beyond a few 100 kilometers at practical rates remains a major challenge. One approach to circumvent lossy terrestrial transmission of entangled photon pairs is the deployment of optical satellite links. Optimizing these non-static quantum links to yield the highest possible key rate is essential for their successful operation. We therefore developed a high-brightness polarization-entangled photon pair source and a receiver module with a fast steering mirror capable of satellite tracking. We employed this state-of-the-art hardware to distribute photons over a terrestrial free-space link with a distance of 143 km, and extracted secure key rates up to 300 bits per second. Contrary to fiber-based links, the channel loss in satellite downlinks is time-varying and the link time is limited to a few minutes. We therefore propose a model-based optimization of link parameters based on current channel and receiver conditions. This model and our field test will prove helpful in the design and operation of future satellite missions and advance the distribution of secret keys at high rates on a global scale.

Temporal distinguishability in Hong-Ou-Mandel interference: Generation and characterization of high-dimensional frequency entanglement

High-dimensional quantum entanglement is currently one of the most prolific fields in quantum information processing due to its high information capacity and error resilience. A versatile method for harnessing high-dimensional entanglement has long been hailed as an absolute necessity in the exploration of quantum science and technologies. Here we exploit Hong-Ou-Mandel interference to manipulate discrete frequency entanglement in arbitrary-dimensional Hilbert space. The generation and characterization of two-, four- and six-dimensional frequency entangled qudits are theoretically and experimentally investigated, allowing for the estimation of entanglement dimensionality in the whole state space. Additionally, our strategy can be generalized to engineer higher-dimensional entanglement in other photonic degrees of freedom. Our results may provide a more comprehensive understanding of frequency shaping and interference phenomena, and pave the way to more complex high-dimensional quantum information processing protocols.

Verification of high-dimensional entanglement generated in quantum interference

Entanglement and quantum interference are key ingredients in a variety of quantum information processing tasks. Harnessing the generation and characterization of entanglement in high-dimensional state spaces is a necessary prerequisite towards practical quantum protocols. Here, we use quantum interference on a beam splitter to engineer hyperentanglement in polarization and discrete frequency degrees of freedom (DOF). We show how independent measurements of polarization and frequency DOF allow for the verification of high-dimensional entanglement in the combined state space. These results may indicate new paths towards practical exploitation of entanglement stored in multiple degrees of freedom, in particular in the context of high-dimensional quantum information processing protocols.
