Quantum graph models for transport in filamentary switching

The formation of metallic nanofilaments bridging two electrodes across an insulator is a mechanism for resistive switching. Examples of such phenomena include atomic synapses, which constitute a distinct class of memristive devices whose behavior is closely tied to the properties of the filament. Until recently, experimental investigation of the low-temperature regime and quantum transport effects has been limited. However, with growing interest in understanding the true impacts of the filament on device conductance, comprehending quantum effects has become crucial for quantum neuromorphic hardware. We discuss quantum transport resulting from filamentary switching in a narrow region where the continuous approximation of the contact is not valid, and only a few atoms are involved. In this scenario, the filament can be represented by a graph depicting the adjacency of atoms and the overlap between atomic orbitals. Using quantum graphs, we calculate the scattering amplitude of charge carriers on this graph and explore the interplay between filamentary formation and quantum transport effects.

Multipartite entanglement sudden death and birth in randomized hypergraph states

We introduce and analyze the entanglement properties of randomized hypergraph states, as an extended notion of the randomization procedure in the quantum logic gates for the usual graph states, recently proposed in the literature. The probabilities of applying imperfect generalized controlled-$Z$ gates simulate the noisy operations over the qubits. We obtain entanglement measures as negativity, concurrence, and genuine multiparticle negativity, and show that entanglement exhibits a non-monotonic behavior in terms of the randomness parameters, which is a consequence of the non-uniformity of the associated hypergraphs, reinforcing the claim that the entanglement of randomized graph states is monotonic since they are related to $2$-uniform hypergraphs. Moreover, we observed the phenomena of entanglement sudden death and entanglement sudden birth in RH states. This work revels a connection between the non-uniformity of hypergraphs and loss of entanglement.

Average scattering entropy for periodic, aperiodic and random distribution of vertices in simple quantum graphs

This work deals with the average scattering entropy of quantum graphs. We explore this concept in several distinct scenarios that involve periodic, aperiodic and random distribution of vertices of distinct degrees. In particular, we compare distinct situations to see how they behave as we change the arrangements of vertices and the topology and geometry of the proposed structures. The results show that the average scattering entropy may depend on the number of vertices, and on the topological and geometrical disposition of vertices and edges of the quantum graph. In this sense, it can be seen as another tool to be used to explore geometric and topological effects of current interest for quantum systems.

Effects of quantum deformation on the Jaynes-Cummings and anti-Jaynes-Cummings models

The theory of non-Hermitian systems and the theory of quantum deformations have attracted a great deal of attention in the past decades. In general, non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are constructed by an ad hoc manner. Here, we study the (2+1) Dirac oscillator and show that in the context of the $κ$-deformed Poincaré-Hopf algebra its Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian but has real eigenvalues. The non-Hermiticity stems from the $κ$-deformed algebra. From the mapping in Bermudez et al., Phys. Rev. A 76, 041801(R) (2007), we propose the $κ$-Jaynes-Cummings and $κ$-anti-Jaynes-Cummings models, which describe an interaction between a two-level system with a quantized mode of an optical cavity in the $κ$-deformed context. We find that the $κ$-deformation modifies the Zitterbewegung frequencies and the collapses and revivals of quantum oscillations. In particular, the total angular momentum in the $z$ direction is not conserved anymore, as a direct consequence of the deformation.

Effects of rotation and Coulomb type potential on the spin-1/2 Aharonov-Bohm problem

In this work, we investigate how both rotation and a Coulomb potential affect the quantum mechanical description of a spin-$1/2$ particle in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We employ the method of the self-adjoint extensions in the framework of the Pauli-Schrödinger equation. We discuss the role of the spin degree of freedom on this problem, find the energy spectrum, and investigate the results in detail.

Self-adjoint extension approach for singular Hamiltonians in (2+1) dimensions

In this work, we review two methods used to approach singular Hamiltonians in (2+1) dimensions. Both methods are based on the self-adjoint extension approach. It is very common to find singular Hamiltonians in quantum mechanics, especially in quantum systems in the presence of topological defects, which are usually modelled by point interactions. In general, it is possible to apply some kind of regularization procedure, as the vanishing of the wave function at the location of the singularity, ensuring that the wave function is square-integrable and then can be associated with a physical state. However, a study based on the self-adjoint extension approach can lead to more general boundary conditions that still gives acceptable physical states. We exemplify the methods by exploring the bound and scattering scenarios of a spin 1/2 charged particle with an anomalous magnetic moment in the Aharonov-Bohm potential in the conical space.

Average scattering entropy of quantum graphs

The scattering amplitude in simple quantum graphs is a well-known process which may be highly complex. In this work, motivated by the Shannon entropy, we propose a methodology that associates to a graph a scattering entropy, which we call the average scattering entropy. It is defined by taking into account the period of the scattering amplitude which we calculate using the Green's function procedure. We first describe the methodology on general grounds, and then exemplify our findings considering several distinct groups of graphs. We go on and investigate other possibilities, one that contains groups of graphs with the same number of vertices, with the same degree, and the same number of edges, with the same length, but with distinct topologies and with different entropies. And the other, which contains graphs of the fishbone type, where the scattering entropy depends on the boundary conditions on the vertices of degree $1$, with the corresponding values decreasing and saturating very rapidly, as we increase the number of elementary structures in the graphs.

Study of electronic properties, Magnetization and persistent currents in a mesoscopic ring by controlled curvature

We study the model of a noninteracting spinless electron gas confined to the two-dimensional localized surface of a cone in the presence of external magnetic fields. The localized region is characterized by an annular radial potential. We write the Schrödinger equation and use the thin-layer quantization procedure to calculate the wavefunctions and the energy spectrum. In such a procedure, it arises a geometry induced potential, which depends on both the mean and the Gaussian curvatures. Nevertheless, since we consider a ring with a mesoscopic size, the effects of the Gaussian curvature on the energy spectrum are negligible. The magnetization and the persistent current are analyzed. In the former, we observed the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) types oscillations. In the latter, it is observed only the AB type oscillations. In both cases, the curvature increases the amplitude of the oscillations.

Quantum motion of a spinless particle in curved space: A viewpoint of scattering theory

In this work, we study the scattering of a spinless charged particle constrained to move on a curved surface in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm potential. We begin with the equations of motion for the surface and transverse dynamics previously obtained in the literature (Ferrari G. and Cuoghi G., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{100}, 230403 (2008)) and describe the surface with non-trivial curvature in terms of linear defects such as dislocations and disclinations. Expressions for the modified phase shift, S--matrix and scattering amplitude are determined by applying a suitable boundary condition at the origin, which comes from the self-adjoint extension theory. We also discuss the presence of a bound state obtained from the pole of the S--matrix. Finally, we claim that the bound state, the additional scattering and the dependence of the scattering amplitude with energy are solely due to the curvature effects.

Effects of curvature on the electronic states of a two-dimensional mesoscopic ring

The effects of surface curvature on the motion of electrons in a mesoscopic two-dimensional ring on a cone in the presence of external magnetic fields are examined. The approach follows the thin-layer quantization procedure, which gives rise to a geometry induced potential. Due to the annular geometric shape of the sample, only the mean curvature has relevant effects to the model. Nevertheless, the most significant contribution of the mean curvature occurs in the state $m=0$, which tends to decrease the energies when the magnetic field is null. The effects of curvature are also manifested in the cyclotron frequency as well as in the effective angular momentum through the $α$ parameter, which can be controlled in such a way that the magnitude of these effects becomes explicit. This is verified in the energies and wave functions of the system. A decrease in the number of occupied states in the Fermi energy is observed. As a consequence, there is an alteration in the radial range of the conducting region of the sample. This fact is confirmed by studying the variations in the radii of the states.

On the 2D Dirac oscillator in the presence of vector and scalar potentials in the cosmic string spacetime in the context of spin and pseudospin symmetries

The Dirac equation with both scalar and vector couplings describing the dynamics of a two-dimensional Dirac oscillator in the cosmic string spacetime is considered. We derive the Dirac-Pauli equation and solve it in the limit of the spin and the pseudo-spin symmetries. We analyze the presence of cylindrical symmetric scalar potentials which allows us to provide analytic solutions for the resultant field equation. By using an appropriate ansatz, we find that the radial equation is a biconfluent Heun-like differential equation. The solution of this equation provides us with more than one expression for the energy eigenvalues of the oscillator. We investigate these energies and find that there is a quantum condition between them. We study this condition in detail and find that it requires the fixation of one of the physical parameters involved in the problem. Expressions for the energy of the oscillator are obtained for some values of the quantum number $n$. Some particular cases which lead to known physical systems are also addressed.

Modifications of electron states, magnetization and persistent current in a quantum dot by controlled curvature

In this work, we use the thin-layer quantization procedure to study the physical implications due to curvature effects on a quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field. Among the various physical implications due to the curvature of the system, we can mention the absence of the $m=0$ state is the most relevant one. The absence of it affects the Fermi energy and consequently the thermodynamic properties of the system. In the absence of magnetic fields, we verify that the rotational symmetry in the lateral confinement is preserved in the electronic states of the system and its degeneracy with respect to the harmonicity of the confining potential is broken. In the presence of a magnetic field, however, the energies of the electronic states in a quantum dot with a curvature are greater than those obtained for a quantum dot in a flat space, and the profile of degeneracy changes when the field is varied. We show that the curvature of the surface modifies the number of subbands occupied in the Fermi energy. In the study of both magnetization and persistent currents, we observe that Aharonov-Bohm-type (AB-type) oscillations are present, whereas de Haas-van Alphen-type (dHvA) oscillations are not well defined.

Unitary equivalence between the Green's function and Schrödinger approaches for quantum graphs

In a previous work [Andrade \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rep. \textbf{647}, 1 (2016)], it was shown that the exact Green's function (GF) for an arbitrarily large (although finite) quantum graph is given as a sum over scattering paths, where local quantum effects are taken into account through the reflection and transmission scattering amplitudes. To deal with general graphs, two simplifying procedures were developed: regrouping of paths into families of paths and the separation of a large graph into subgraphs. However, for less symmetrical graphs with complicated topologies as, for instance, random graphs, it can become cumbersome to choose the subgraphs and the families of paths. In this work, an even more general procedure to construct the energy domain GF for a quantum graph based on its adjacency matrix is presented. This new construction allows us to obtain the secular determinant, unraveling a unitary equivalence between the scattering Schrödinger approach and the Green's function approach. It also enables us to write a trace formula based on the Green's function approach. The present construction has the advantage that it can be applied directly for any graph, going from regular to random topologies.

The DKP oscillator with a linear interaction in the cosmic string space-time

We study the relativistic quantum dynamics of a DKP oscillator field subject to a linear interaction in cosmic string space-time in order to better understand the effects of gravitational fields produced by topological defects on the scalar field. We obtain the solution of DKP oscillator in the cosmic string background. Also, we solve it with an ansatz in presence of linear interaction. We obtain the eigenfunctions and the energy levels of the relativistic field in that background.

Scattering and bound states of Dirac Equation in presence of cosmic string for Hulthén potential

In this work we study the Dirac equation with vector and scalar potentials in the spacetime generated by a cosmic string. Using an approximation for the centrifugal term, a solution for the radial differential equation is obtained. We consider the scattering states under the Hulthén potential and obtain the phase shifts. From the poles of the scattering $S$-matrix the states energies are determined as well.

Scattering and bound states of a spin--1/2 neutral particle in the cosmic string spacetime

In this paper the relativistic quantum dynamics of a spin-1/2 neutral particle with a magnetic moment $μ$ in the cosmic string spacetime is reexamined by applying the von Neumann theory of self--adjoint extensions. Contrary to previous studies where the interaction between the spin and the line of charge is neglected, here we consider its effects. This interaction gives rise to a point interaction: $\boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot \mathbf{E}= (2λ/α)δ(r)/r$. Due to the presence of the Dirac delta function, by applying an appropriated boundary condition provided by the theory of self--adjoint extensions, irregular solutions for the Hamiltonian are allowed. We address the scattering problem obtaining the phase shift, S-matrix and the scattering amplitude. The scattering amplitude obtained shows a dependency with energy which stems from the fact that the helicity is not conserved in this system. Examining the poles of the S-matrix we obtain an expression for the bound states. The presence of bound states for this system has not been discussed before in the literature.

Effects of quantum deformation on the integer quantum Hall effect

In this work an application of the $κ$--deformed algebra in condensed matter physics is presented. Starting by the $κ$--deformed Dirac equation we study the relativistic generalization of the $κ$--deformed Landau levels as well as the consequences of the deformation on the Hall conductivity. By comparing the $κ$--deformed Landau levels in the nonrelativistic regime with the energy levels of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the presence of a normal magnetic field, upper bounds for the deformation parameter in different materials are established. An expression for the $κ$--deformed Hall conductivity of a 2DEG is obtained as well. The expression recovers the well-known result for the usual Hall conductivity in the limit $\varepsilon=κ^{-1}\to 0$. The deformation parameter breaks the Landau levels degeneracy and due to this, it is observed that deformation gives rise to new plateaus of conductivity in a such way that the plateaus widths of the $κ$--deformed Hall conductivity are less than the usual one. By studying the temperature dependence of the $κ$--deformed Hall conductivity, we show that an increase of the temperature causes the smearing of the plateaus and a diminution of the effect of the deformation, whilst an increase in the magnetic field enhances the effect of the deformation.

Green's function approach for quantum graphs: an overview

Here we review the many aspects and distinct phenomena associated to quantum dynamics on general graph structures. For so, we discuss such class of systems under the energy domain Green's function ($G$) framework. This approach is particularly interesting because $G$ can be written as a sum over classical-like paths, where local quantum effects are taking into account through the scattering matrix amplitudes (basically, transmission and reflection amplitudes) defined on each one of the graph vertices. Hence, the {\em exact} $G$ has the functional form of a generalized semiclassical formula, which through different calculation techniques (addressed in details here) always can be cast into a closed analytic expression. It allows to solve exactly arbitrary large (although finite) graphs in a recursive and fast way. Using the Green's function method, we survey many properties for open and closed quantum graphs as scattering solutions for the former and eigenspectrum and eigenstates for the latter, also considering quasi-bound states. Concrete examples, like cube, binary trees and Sierpiński-like topologies are presented. Along the work, possible distinct applications using the Green's function methods for quantum graphs are outlined.
