A Block Least Mean Square Method for Fiber Longitudinal Power Profile Monitoring

We propose a block least mean square (LMS) algorithm to monitor the longitudinal power profile of a fiber-optic link through receiver-based digital data from a coherent detector. Compared to the benchmark least squares (LS) method, the proposed algorithm does not require large matrix inversions or batch processing, thus allowing the received data to be processed in blocks of minimum size by an overlap-save algorithm, reducing complexity and latency. We propose an efficient implementation of the method with a stochastic gradient update leveraging a key computation in the frequency domain, offering computational savings over state-of-the-art monitoring techniques. We test the proposal in different scenarios by means of numerical simulations.

Power-Aware Digital Twin of Coherent Optical Receiver

We propose a digital twin of coherent receivers based on an extended physical model for predicting quality of transmission under receiver power variations. We experimentally validate it, demonstrating an accuracy improved by up to 1.5dB.

Experimental quantum triangle network nonlocality with an AlGaAs multiplexed entangled photon source

The exploration of the concept of nonlocality beyond standard Bell scenarios in quantum network architectures unveils fundamentally new forms of correlations that hold a strong potential for future applications of quantum communication networks. To materialize this potential, it is necessary to adapt theoretical advances to realistic configurations. Here we consider a quantum triangle network, for which is was shown in theory that, remarkably, quantum nonlocality without inputs can be demonstrated for sources with an arbitrarily small level of independence. We realize experimentally such correlated sources by carefully engineering the output state of a single AlGaAs multiplexed entangled-photon source, exploiting energy-matched channels cut in its broad spectrum. This simulated triangle network is then used to violate experimentally for the first time a Bell-like inequality that we derive to capture the effect of noise in the correlations present in our system. We also rigorously validate our findings by analysing the mutual information between the generated states. Our results allow us to deepen our understanding of network nonlocality while also pushing its practical relevance for quantum communication networks.

An electrically injected photon-pair source at room temperature

One of the main challenges for future quantum information technologies is miniaturization and integration of high performance components in a single chip. In this context, electrically driven sources of non-classical states of light have a clear advantage over optically driven ones. Here we demonstrate the first electrically driven semiconductor source of photon pairs working at room temperature and telecom wavelength. The device is based on type-II intracavity Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion in an AlGaAs laser diode and generates pairs at 1.57 $μ$m. Time-correlation measurements of the emitted pairs give an internal generation efficiency of $7 \times 10^{-11}$ pairs/injected electron. The capability of our platform to support generation, manipulation and detection of photons opens the way to the demonstration of massively parallel systems for complex quantum operations.
