Exact vector Akhmediev breathers dominated by a linearly stable frequency

In the scalar nonlinear Schrodinger equation, an Akhmediev breather (AB) is dominated by a frequency that lies inside the modulation instability gain band. This exactly correspondence between instability and breathers is challenged in vector systems such as the Manakov system, where the gain spectrum splits into disconnected lobes separated by stable gaps. We analytically and numerically construct an AB that is generated by unstable modes but is spectrally dominated by a stable harmonic at its peak. Numerical simulations starting from a simple continuous wave background perturbed only by the unstable harmonics confirm that the stable component emerges spontaneously and becomes dominant without any initial seed. We identify the precise parameter window in which this phenomenon occurs and show that this passive amplification of the linearly stable component is driven by four-wave mixing, which accounts for 96% of the nonlinear forcing. Given the universality of the Manakov system across nonlinear physics, from nonlinear optics to ultracold quantum gases, these results open an experimentally accessible new perspective on breather dynamics, one in which linearly stable frequencies can dominate.

Recurrent nonlinear modulational instability via down-conversion in quadratic media

We investigate the induced modulation instability in second-harmonic generation beyond the early stage of the linearized growth of the modulation. We find a regime of recurrence (quasi-periodic conversion and back-conversion between the pump and the modulation) which is genuine of the parametric conversion process in quadratic media. Such recurrence is mainly driven by a process of non-degenerate downconversion, showing no analogy to the cascading regime which mimics the cubic (Kerr) nonlinearities. We consider two different steady states, i.e., a pure second-harmonic and a mixed fundamental/second-harmonic state. Both exhibit this dynamics, which we show to be amenable to a description in terms of reduced frequency-truncated models. The comparison with full numerical simulations of the starting model prove the validity and robustness of the reduced models in characterizing in a simple and elegant way a wide range of modulationally-unstable steady states.

Peregrine solitons and resonant radiation in cubic and quadratic media

We present the fascinating phenomena of resonant radiation emitted by transient rogue waves in cubic and quadratic nonlinear media, particularly those shed from Peregrine solitons, one of the main wavepackets used today to model real-world rogue waves. In cubic media, it turns out that the emission of radiation from a Peregrine soliton can be attributed to the presence of higher-order dispersion, but is affected by the intrinsic local longitudinal variation of the soliton wavenumber. In quadratic media, we reveal that a two-color Peregrine rogue wave can resonantly radiate dispersive waves even in the absence of higher-order dispersion, subjected to a phase-matching mechanism that involves the second harmonic wave, and to a concomitant difference-frequency generation process. In both cubic and quadratic media, we provide simple analytic criteria for calculating the radiated frequencies in terms of material parameters, showing excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Twin Spotlight Beam Generation in Quadratic Crystals

Optical rogue waves have been extensively studied in the past two decades. However, observations of multidimensional extreme wave events remain surprisingly scarce. In this work we present the experimental demonstration of the spontaneous generation of spatially localized two-dimensional beams in a quadratic nonlinear crystal, which are composed by twin components at the fundamental and the second-harmonic frequencies. These localized spots of light emerge from a wide background beam, and eventually disappear as the laser beam intensity is progressively increased.

Optical Kerr spatiotemporal dark extreme waves

We study the existence and propagation of multidimensional dark non-diffractive and non-dispersive spatiotemporal optical wave-packets in nonlinear Kerr media. We report analytically and confirm numerically the properties of spatiotemporal dark lines, X solitary waves and lump solutions of the (2 + 1)D nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLSE). Dark lines, X waves and lumps represent holes of light on a continuous wave background. These solitary waves are derived by exploiting the connection between the (2 + 1)D NLSE and a well-known equation of hydrodynamics, namely the (2+1)D Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. This finding opens a novel path for the excitation and control of spatiotemporal optical solitary and rogue waves, of hydrodynamic nature.

Akhmediev Breathers and Peregrine Solitary Waves in a Quadratic Medium

We investigate the formation of optical localized nonlinear structures, evolving upon a non-zero background plane wave, in a dispersive quadratic medium. We show the existence of quadratic Akhmediev breathers and Peregrine solitary waves, in the regime of cascading second-harmonic generation. This finding opens a novel path for the excitation of extreme rogue waves and for the description of modulation instability in quadratic nonlinear optics.

Baseband Modulation Instability as the Origin of Rogue Waves

We study the existence and properties of rogue wave solutions in different nonlinear wave evolution models that are commonly used in optics and hydrodynamics. In particular, we consider Fokas-Lenells equation, the defocusing vector nolinear Schrödinger equation, and the long-wave-short-wave resonance equation. We show that rogue wave solutions in all of these models exist in the subset of parameters where modulation instability is present, if and only if the unstable sideband spectrum also contains cw or zero-frequency perturbations as a limiting case (baseband instability). We numerically confirm that rogue waves may only be excited from a weakly perturbed cw whenever the baseband instability is present. Conversely, modulation instability leads to nonlinear periodic oscillations.

Vector Rogue Waves and Baseband Modulation Instability in the Defocusing Regime

We report and discuss analytical solutions of the vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describe rogue waves in the defocusing regime. This family of solutions includes bright-dark and dark-dark rogue waves. The link between modulational instability (MI) and rogue waves is displayed by showing that only a peculiar kind of MI, namely baseband MI, can sustain rogue wave formation. The existence of vector rogue waves in the defocusing regime is expected to be a crucial progress in explaining extreme waves in a variety of physical scenarios described by multi-component systems, from oceanography to optics and plasma physics.

Resonant radiation shed by dispersive shock waves

We show that dispersive shock waves resulting from the nonlinearity overbalancing a weak leading-order dispersion can emit resonant radiation owing to higher-order dispersive contributions. We analyze such phenomenon for the defocusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation, giving criteria for calculating the radiated frequency based on the estimate of the shock velocity, revealing also a diversity of possible scenarios depending on the order and magnitude of the dispersive corrections.

Negative-frequency dispersive wave generation in quadratic media

We show that the extremely blue-shifted dispersive wave emitted in Kerr media owing to the coupling with the negative-frequency branch [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 253901 (2012)] can be observed in quadratic media via second-harmonic generation. Not only such phenomenon is thus independent on the specific nonlinear mechanism, but it is shown to occur regardless of the fact that the process is pumped by a pulse which exhibits soliton-like features or, viceversa, undergoes wave-breaking. A simple unified formula gives the frequencies of the emitted dispersive waves in both cases.

Rogue waves emerging from the resonant interaction of three waves

We introduce a novel family of analytic solutions of the three-wave resonant interaction equations to the purpose of modeling unique events, i.e. "amplitude peaks" which are isolated in space and time. The description of these solutions is likely to be a crucial step in the understanding and forecasting of rogue-waves in a variety of multi-component wave dynamics, from oceanography to optics, from plasma physics to acoustics.

Deterministic Vector Freak Waves

We construct and discuss a semi-rational, multi-parametric vector solution of coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (Manakov system). This family of solutions includes known vector Peregrine solutions, bright-dark-rogue solutions, and novel vector unusual freak waves. The vector freak (or rogue) waves could be of great interest in a variety of complex systems, from optics to Bose-Einstein condensates and finance.

Velocity-locked solitary waves in quadratic media

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of three-wave resonant interaction solitary triplets in quadratic media. Stable velocity-locked bright-dark-bright spatial solitary triplets, determined by the balance between the energy exchange rates and the velocity mismatch between the interacting waves, are excited in a KTP crystal.

Nonlinear envelope equation for broadband optical pulses in quadratic media

We derive a nonlinear envelope equation to describe the propagation of broadband optical pulses in second order nonlinear materials. The equation is first order in the propagation coordinate and is valid for arbitrarily wide pulse bandwidth. Our approach goes beyond the usual coupled wave description of $χ^{(2)}$ phenomena and provides an accurate modelling of the evolution of ultra-broadband pulses also when the separation into different coupled frequency components is not possible or not profitable.

Parametric Frequency Conversion of Short Optical Pulses Controlled by a CW Background

We predict that parametric sum-frequency generation of an ultra-short pulse may result from the mixing of an ultra-short optical pulse with a quasi-continuous wave control. We analytically show that the intensity, time duration and group velocity of the generated idler pulse may be controlled in a stable manner by adjusting the intensity level of the background pump.

Inelastic Scattering and Interactions of Three-Wave Parametric Solitons

We study the excitation, decay and interactions of novel, velocity locked three-wave parametric solitons in a medium with quadratic nonlinearity and dispersion. We analytically describe the particle-like scattering between stable or unstable soliton triplets with linear waves in terms of explicit solutions featuring accelerated or decelerated solitons.

Stable Control of Pulse Speed in Parametric Three-Wave Solitons

We analyze the control of the propagation speed of three wave packets interacting in a medium with quadratic nonlinearity and dispersion. We found analytical expressions for mutually trapped pulses with a common velocity in the form of a three-parameter family of solutions of the three-wave resonant interaction. The stability of these novel parametric solitons is simply related to the value of their common group velocity.
