Dissipative Entanglement of Quantum Spin Fluctuations

We consider two non-interacting infinite quantum spin chains immersed in a common thermal environment and undergoing a local dissipative dynamics of Lindblad type. We study the time evolution of collective mesoscopic quantum spin fluctuations that, unlike macroscopic mean-field observables, retain a quantum character in the thermodynamical limit. We show that the microscopic dissipative dynamics is able to entangle these mesoscopic degrees of freedom, through a purely mixing mechanism. Further, the behaviour of the dissipatively generated quantum correlations between the two chains is studied as a function of temperature and dissipation strength.

Photon number statistics uncover the fluctuations in non-equilibrium lattice dynamics

Fluctuations of the atomic positions are at the core of a large class of unusual material properties ranging from quantum para-electricity to high temperature superconductivity. Their measurement in solids is the subject of an intense scientific debate focused on seeking a methodology capable of establishing a direct link between the variance of the atomic displacements and experimentally measurable observables. Here we address this issue by means of non-equilibrium optical experiments performed in shot-noise limited regime. The variance of the time dependent atomic positions and momenta is directly mapped into the quantum fluctuations of the photon number of the scattered probing light. A fully quantum description of the non-linear interaction between photonic and phononic fields is benchmarked by unveiling the squeezing of thermal phonons in $α$-quartz.

Semi-Classical Localisation Properties of Quantum Oscillators on a Noncommutative Configuration Space

When dealing with the classical limit of two quantum mechanical oscillators on a noncommutative configuration space, the limits corresponding to the removal of configuration-space noncommutativity and position-momentum noncommutativity do not commute. We address this behaviour from the point of view of the phase-space localisation properties of the Wigner functions of coherent states under the two limits.

Pulsed homodyne Gaussian quantum tomography with low detection efficiency

Pulsed homodyne quantum tomography usually requires a high detection efficiency limiting its applicability in quantum optics. Here, it is shown that the presence of low detection efficiency ($<50\%$) does not prevent the tomographic reconstruction of quantum states of light, specifically, of Gaussian type. This result is obtained by applying the so-called "minimax" adaptive reconstruction of the Wigner function to pulsed homodyne detection. In particular, we prove, by both numerical and real experiments, that an effective discrimination of different Gaussian quantum states can be achieved. Our finding paves the way to a more extensive use of quantum tomographic methods, even in physical situations in which high detection efficiency is unattainable.

Properties of subentropy

Subentropy is an entropy-like quantity that arises in quantum information theory; for example, it provides a tight lower bound on the accessible information for pure state ensembles, dual to the von Neumann entropy upper bound in Holevo's theorem. Here we establish a series of properties of subentropy, paralleling the well-developed analogous theory for von Neumann entropy. Further, we show that subentropy is a lower bound for min-entropy. We introduce a notion of conditional subentropy and show that it can be used to provide an upper bound for the guessing probability of any classical-quantum state of two qubits; we conjecture that the bound applies also in higher dimensions. Finally we give an operational interpretation of subentropy within classical information theory.

Classical limits of quantum mechanics on a non-commutative configuration space

We consider a model of non-commutative Quantum Mechanics given by two harmonic oscillators over a non-commutative two dimensional configuration space. We study possible ways of removing the non-commutativity based on the classical limit context known as anti-Wick quantization. We show that removal of non-commutativity from the configuration space and from the canonical operators are not commuting operations.

Entanglement witnesses for a class of bipartite states of n x n qubits

We characterize the positive maps detecting the entangled bipartite states of n x n qubits that are diagonal with respect to the orthonormal basis constructed by tensor products of Pauli matrices acting on the totally symmetric state. We then discuss the case n=2 for a class of states completely determined by the geometric patterns of subsets of a 16 point lattice.

Noise effects in perfect transmission of quantum states

A recent scheme for perfect transmission of quantum states through quasi-one dimensional chains requires application of global control at regular intervals of time. We study the effect of stochastic noise in this control and find that the scheme is robust for reasonable values of disorder. Both un-correlated and correlated noise in the external control are studied and it is remarkably found that the efficiency of the protocol is much higher in presence of correlated noise.

Non-divisiblity and non-Markovianity in a Gaussian dissipative dynamics

We study a stochastic Schroedinger equation that generates a family of Gaussian dynamical maps in one dimension permitting a detailed exam of two different definitions of non-Markovianity: one related to the explicit dependence of the generator on the starting time, the other to the non-divisibility of the time-evolution maps. The model shows instances where one has non-Markovianity in both senses and cases when one has Markovianity in the second sense but not in the first one.

Sub-shot noise sensitivities without entanglement

It is commonly maintained that entanglement is necessary to beat the shot noise limit in the sensitivity with which certain parameters can be measured in interferometric experiments. Here we show that, with a fluctuating number of two-mode bosons, the shot-noise limit can be beaten by non-entangled bosonic states with all bosons in one mode. For a given finite maximum number of bosons, we calculate the optimal one- and two-mode bosonic states, and show that in the absence of losses, NOON states are the optimal two-mode bosonic states.

Entangled identical particles and noise

For systems of identical Bosons, it is necessary to reformulate the notions of separability and entanglement in algebraic terms shifting the emphasis from the particle aspect of first quantization to the mode description typical of second quantization. Within this new framework, we show that, unlike for systems consisting of distinguishable qubits, negativity is an exhaustive bipartite entanglement witness for systems with fixed number of Bosons; further, we investigate the impact of dephasing noise in relation to the use of such many-body Bosonic systems in metrological applications.

Asymptotic Entanglement and Lindblad Dynamics: a Perturbative Approach

We consider an open bipartite quantum system with dissipative Lindblad type dynamics. In order to study the entanglement of the stationary states, we develop a perturbative approach and apply it to the physically significant case when a purely dissipative perturbation is added to the unperturbed generator which by itself would produce reversible unitary dynamics.

Three qubits in a symmetric environment: dissipatively generated asymptotic entanglement

We study the asymptotic entanglement of three identical qubits under the action of a Markovian open system dynamics that does not distinguish them. We show that by adding a completely depolarized qubit to a special class of two qubit states, by letting them reach the asymptotic state and by finally eliminating the added qubit, can provide more entanglement than by direct immersion of the two qubits within the same environment.

Entanglement and entropy rates in open quantum systems

We study a recent conjecture about the behavior of the quantum relative entropy compared to the relative entropy of entanglement in open bipartite systems. The conjecture states that, under a dissipative time-evolution, the positive rate of change of the relative entropy will always be larger than that of the relative entropy of entanglement. After explicitly solving a two-qubit master equation of Lindblad type with separable and entangled stationary states, we show that the conjecture can be violated for initial states with an entangled asymptotic state, while it appears to be confirmed when the asymptotic states are separable.

Environment Induced Bipartite Entanglement

Recently, a sufficient condition on the structure of the Kossakowski-Lindblad master equation has been given such that the generated reduced dynamics of two qubits results entangling for at least one among their initial separable pure states. In this paper we study to which extent this condition is also necessary. Further, we find sufficient conditions for bath-mediated entanglement generation in higher dimensional bipartite open quantum systems.

We study a particular class of states of a bipartite system consisting of two 4-level parties. By means of an adapted extended reduction criterion we associate their entanglement properties to the geometric patterns of a planar lattice consisting of 16 points.

Charge Oscillations in Superconducting Nanodevices Coupled to External Environments

Charge oscillations in certain nanodevices, more specifically the so-called Superconducting Cooper Pair Boxes (SCB), are usually interpreted as an effect of macroscopic quantum coherence; an alternative explanation is however possible in terms of the Gross-Pitaewski equation for the classical order parameter. These two explanations are based on different quantum states assigned to the SCB, occupation number states in the first case, coherent-like states in the second one. We show that, when the SCB is weakly coupled to an external source of noise and dissipation, occupation number states are much more unstable than coherent ones.
