Schwinger's picture of quantum mechanics: 2-groupoids and symmetries

Starting from the groupoid approach to Schwinger's picture of Quantum Mechanics, a proposal for the description of symmetries in this framework is advanced. It is shown that, given a groupoid $G\rightrightarrows Ω$ associated with a (quantum) system, there are two possible descriptions of its symmetries, one "microscopic", the other one "global".The microscopic point of view leads to the introduction of an additional layer over the grupoid $G$, giving rise to a suitable algebraic structure of 2-groupoid.On the other hand, taking advantage of the notion of group of bisections of a given groupoid, the global perspective allows to construct a group of symmetries out of a 2-groupoid.The latter notion allows to introduce an analog of the Wigner's theorem for quantum symmetries in the groupoid approach to Quantum Mechanics.

Schrödinger's problem with cats: measurements and states in the Groupoid Picture of Quantum Mechanics

Schrödinger's famous Gedankenexperiment involving a cat is used as a motivation to discuss the evolution of states of the composition of classical and quantum systems in the groupoid formalism for physical theories introduced recently. It is shown that the notion of classical system, in the sense of Birkhoff and von Neumann, is equivalent, in the case of systems with a countable number of outputs, to a totally disconnected groupoid with Abelian von Neumann algebra. In accordance with Raggio's theorem, the impossibility of evolving the product state of a composite system made up of a classical and a quantum one into an entangled state by means of a unitary evolution which is internal to the composite system itself is proved in the groupoid formalism.

Covariant reduction of classical Hamiltonian Field Theories: From D'Alembert to Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger

A novel reduction procedure for covariant classical field theories, reflecting the generalized symplectic reduction theory of Hamiltonian systems, is presented. The departure point of this reduction procedure consists in the choice of a submanifold of the manifold of solutions of the equations describing a field theory. Then, the covariance of the geometrical objects involved, will allow to define equations of motion on a reduced space. The computation of the canonical geometrical structure is performed neatly by using the geometrical framework provided by the multisymplectic description of covariant field theories. The procedure is illustrated by reducing the D'Alembert theory on a five-dimensional Minkowski space-time to a massive Klein-Gordon theory in four dimensions and, more interestingly, to the Schrödinger equation in 3+1 dimensions.

Covariant Variational Evolution and Jacobi Brackets: Fields

The analysis of the covariant brackets on the space of functions on the solutions to a variational problem in the framework of contact geometry initiated in the companion letter Ref.19 is extended to the case of the multisymplectic formulation of the free Klein-Gordon theory and of the free Schrödinger equation.

Covariant Variational Evolution and Jacobi Brackets: Particles

The formulation of covariant brackets on the space of solutions to a variational problem is analyzed in the framework of contact geometry. It is argued that the Poisson algebra on the space of functionals on fields should be read as a Poisson subalgebra within an algebra of functions equipped with a Jacobi bracket on a suitable contact manifold.

Schwinger's Picture of Quantum Mechanics IV: Composition and independence

The groupoids description of Schwinger's picture of quantum mechanics is continued by discussing the closely related notions of composition of systems, subsystems, and their independence. Physical subsystems have a neat algebraic description as subgroupoids of the Schwinger's groupoid of the system. The groupoids picture offers two natural notions of composition of systems: Direct and free products of groupoids, that will be analyzed in depth as well as their universal character. Finally, the notion of independence of subsystems will be reviewed, finding that the usual notion of independence, as well as the notion of free independence, find a natural realm in the groupoids formalism. The ideas described in this paper will be illustrated by using the EPRB experiment. It will be observed that, in addition to the notion of the non-separability provided by the entangled state of the system, there is an intrinsic `non-separability' associated to the impossibility of identifying the entangled particles as subsystems of the total system.

Schwinger's picture of Quantum Mechanics

In this paper we will present tha main features of what can be called Schwinger's foundational approach to Quantum Mechanics. The basic ingredients of this formulation are the \textit{selective measurements}, whose algebraic composition rules define a mathematical structure called groupoid, which is associated with any physical system. After the introduction of the basic axioms of a groupoid, the concepts of observables and states, statistical interpretation and evolution are derived. An example is finally introduced to support the theoretical description of this approach.

Geometry from divergence functions and complex structures

Motivated by the geometrical structures of quantum mechanics, we introduce an almost-complex structure $J$ on the product $M\times M$ of any parallelizable statistical manifold $M$. Then, we use $J$ to extract a pre-symplectic form and a metric-like tensor on $M\times M$ from a divergence function. These tensors may be pulled back to $M$, and we compute them in the case of an N-dimensional symplex with respect to the Kullback-Leibler relative entropy, and in the case of (a suitable unfolding space of) the manifold of faithful density operators with respect to the von Neumann-Umegaki relative entropy.

Groupoids and Coherent states

Schwinger's algebra of selective measurements has a natural interpretation in terms of groupoids. This approach is pushed forward in this paper to show that the theory of coherent states has a natural setting in the framework of groupoids. Thus given a quantum mechanical system with associated Hilbert space determined by a representation of a groupoid, it is shown that any invariant subset of the group of invertible elements in the groupoid algebra determines a family of generalized coherent states provided that a completeness condition is satisfied. The standard coherent states for the harmonic oscillator as well as generalized coherent states for f-oscillators are exemplified in this picture.

Evolutionary equations and constraints: Maxwell equations

By fixing a reference frame in spacetime, it is possible to split the Euler-Lagrange equations associated with a degenerate Lagrangian into purely evolutionary equations and constraints on the allowed Cauchy data with respect to the notion of Space and Time associated with the given reference frame. In the context of Classical Electrodynamics, we introduce a "covariantization procedure" that allows to invert the perspective and to recover a full-fledged covariant formulation of Maxwell's equations starting only with constraint equations (i.e., Gauss' law and the local version of the law of conservation of magnetic flux) as perceived in a sufficient number of (inertial) reference frames on Minkowski spacetime.

Descriptions of Relativistic Dynamics with World Line Condition

In this paper a generalized form of relativistic dynamics is presented: A realization of the Poincaré algebra is provided in terms of vector fields on the tangent bundle of a simultaneity surface in $\mathbb{R}^4$. The construction of this realization is explicitly shown to clarify the role of the commutation relations of the Poincaré algebra versus their description in terms of Poisson brackets in the no-interaction theorem. Moreover, a geometrical analysis of the ``eleventh generator'' formalism introduced by Sudarshan and Mukunda is outlined, this formalism being at the basis of many proposals which evaded the no-interaction theorem.

Nonlinear Dynamics from Linear Quantum Evolutions

Linear dynamics restricted to invariant submanifolds generally gives rise to nonlinear dynamics. Submanifolds in the quantum framework may emerge for several reasons: one could be interested in specific properties possessed by a given family of states, either as a consequence of experimental constraints or inside an approximation scheme. In this work we investigate such issues in connection with a one parameter group $ϕ_t$ of transformations on a Hilbert space, $\mathcal{H}$, defining the unitary evolutions of a chosen quantum system. Two procedures will be presented: the first one consists in the restriction of the vector field associated with the Schrödinger equation to a submanifold invariant under the flow $ϕ_t$. The second one makes use of the Lagrangian formalism and can be extended also to non-invariant submanifolds, even if in such a case the resulting dynamics is only an approximation of the flow $ϕ_t$. Such a result, therefore, should be conceived as a generalization of the variational method already employed for stationary problems.

A Pedagogical Intrinsic Approach to Relative Entropies as Potential Functions of Quantum Metrics: the $q$-$z$ Family

The so-called $q$-z-\textit{Rényi Relative Entropies} provide a huge two-parameter family of relative entropies which includes almost all well-known examples of quantum relative entropies for suitable values of the parameters. In this paper we consider a log-regularized version of this family and use it as a family of potential functions to generate covariant $(0,2)$ symmetric tensors on the space of invertible quantum states in finite dimensions. The geometric formalism developed here allows us to obtain the explicit expressions of such tensor fields in terms of a basis of globally defined differential forms on a suitable unfolding space without the need to introduce a specific set of coordinates. To make the reader acquainted with the intrinsic formalism introduced, we first perform the computation for the qubit case, and then, we extend the computation of the metric-like tensors to a generic $n$-level system. By suitably varying the parameters $q$ and $z$, we are able to recover well-known examples of quantum metric tensors that, in our treatment, appear written in terms of globally defined geometrical objects that do not depend on the coordinates system used. In particular, we obtain a coordinate-free expression for the von Neumann-Umegaki metric, for the Bures metric and for the Wigner-Yanase metric in the arbitrary $n$-level case.

Hamilton-Jacobi Theory and Information Geometry

Recently, a method to dynamically define a divergence function $D$ for a given statistical manifold $(\mathcal{M}\,,g\,,T)$ by means of the Hamilton-Jacobi theory associated with a suitable Lagrangian function $\mathfrak{L}$ on $T\mathcal{M}$ has been proposed. Here we will review this construction and lay the basis for an inverse problem where we assume the divergence function $D$ to be known and we look for a Lagrangian function $\mathfrak{L}$ for which $D$ is a complete solution of the associated Hamilton-Jacobi theory. To apply these ideas to quantum systems, we have to replace probability distributions with probability amplitudes.

Dynamical aspects in the Quantizer-Dequantizer formalism

The use of the quantizer-dequantizer formalism to describe the evolution of a quantum system is reconsidered. We show that it is possible to embed a manifold in the space of quantum states of a given auxiliary system by means of an appropriate quantizer-dequantizer system. If this manifold of states is invariant with respect to some unitary evolution, the quantizer-dequantizer system provides a classical-like realization of such dynamics, which in general is non linear. Integrability properties are also discussed. Weyl systems and generalized coherente states are used as a simple illustration of these ideas.

Dynamical Vector Fields on the Manifold of Quantum States

In this paper we shall consider the stratified manifold of quantum states and the vector fields which act on it. In particular, we show that the infinitesimal generator of the GKLS evolution is composed of a generator of unitary transformations plus a gradient vector field along with a Kraus vector field transversal to the strata defined by the involutive distribution generated by the former ones.

Covariant Jacobi Brackets for Test Particles

We show that the space of observables of test particles carries a natural Jacobi structure which is manifestly invariant under the action of the Poincaré group. Poisson algebras may be obtained by imposing further requirements. A generalization of Peierls procedure is used to extend this Jacobi bracket on the space of time-like geodesics on Minkowski space-time.
