Temperature-resonant cyclotron spectra in confined geometries

We consider a two-dimensional gas of colliding charged particles confined to finite size containers of various geometries and subjected to a uniform orthogonal magnetic field. The gas spectral densities are characterized by a broad peak at the cyclotron frequency. Unlike for infinitely extended gases, where the amplitude of the cyclotron peak grows linearly with temperature, here confinement causes such a peak to go through a maximum for an optimal temperature. In view of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the reported resonance effect has a direct counterpart in the electric susceptibility of the confined magnetized gas.

Rectification of spatial disorder

We demonstrate that a large ensemble of noiseless globally coupled-pinned oscillators is capable of rectifying spatial disorder with spontaneous current activated through a dynamical phase transition mechanism, either of first or second order, depending on the profile of the pinning potential. In the presence of an external weak drive, the same collective mechanism can result in an absolute negative mobility, which, though not immediately related to symmetry breaking, is most prominent at the phase transition.

Ratcheting of driven attracting colloidal particles: Temporal density oscillations and current multiplicity

We consider the unidirectional particle transport in a suspension of colloidal particles which interact with each other via a pair potential having a hard-core repulsion plus an attractive tail. The colloids are confined within a long narrow channel and are driven along by a DC or an AC external potential. In addition, the walls of the channel interact with the particles via a ratchet-like periodic potential. We use dynamical density functional theory to compute the average particle current. In the case of DC drive, we show that as the attraction strength between the colloids is increased beyond a critical value, the stationary density distribution of the particles loses its stability leading to depinning and a time dependent density profile. Attraction induced symmetry breaking gives rise to the coexistence of stable stationary density profiles with different spatial periods and time-periodic density profiles, each characterized by different values for the particle current.

Asymmetry in shape causing absolute negative mobility

We propose a simple classical concept of nanodevices working in an absolute negative mobility (ANM) regime: The minimal spatial asymmetry required for ANM to occur is embedded in the geometry of the transported particle, rather than in the channel design. This allows for a tremendous simplification of device engineering, thus paving the way towards practical implementations of ANM. Operating conditions and performance of our model device are investigated, both numerically and analytically.

Collective shuttling of attracting particles in asymmetric narrow channels

The rectification of a single file of attracting particles subjected to a low frequency ac drive is proposed as a working mechanism for particle shuttling in an asymmetric narrow channel. Increasing the particle attraction results in the file condensing, as signalled by the dramatic enhancement of the net particle current. Magnitude and direction of the current become extremely sensitive to the actual size of the condensate, which can then be made to shuttle between two docking stations, transporting particles in one direction, with an efficiency much larger than conventional diffusive models predict.

Stochastic resonance in bistable confining potentials. On the role of confinement

We study the effects of the confining conditions on the occurrence of stochastic resonance (SR) in continuous bistable systems. We model such systems by means of double-well potentials that diverge like the q-th power of |x| when |x| goes to infinite. For super-harmonic (hard) potentials with q > 2 the SR peak sharpens with increasing q, whereas for sub-harmonic (soft) potentials, q < 2, it gets suppressed.

Artificial Brownian motors: Controlling transport on the nanoscale

In systems possessing spatial or dynamical symmetry breaking, Brownian motion combined with symmetric external input signals, deterministic or random, alike, can assist directed motion of particles at the submicron scales. In such cases, one speaks of "Brownian motors". In this review the constructive role of Brownian motion is exemplified for various one-dimensional setups, mostly inspired by the cell molecular machinery: working principles and characteristics of stylized devices are discussed to show how fluctuations, either thermal or extrinsic, can be used to control diffusive particle transport. Recent experimental demonstrations of this concept are reviewed with particular attention to transport in artificial nanopores and optical traps, where single particle currents have been first measured. Much emphasis is given to two- and three-dimensional devices containing many interacting particles of one or more species; for this class of artificial motors, noise rectification results also from the interplay of particle Brownian motion and geometric constraints. Recently, selective control and optimization of the transport of interacting colloidal particles and magnetic vortices have been successfully achieved, thus leading to the new generation of microfluidic and superconducting devices presented hereby. Another area with promising potential for realization of artificial Brownian motors are microfluidic or granular set-ups.....

Diffusion in confined geometries

Diffusive transport of particles or, more generally, small objects is a ubiquitous feature of physical and chemical reaction systems. In configurations containing confining walls or constrictions transport is controlled both by the fluctuation statistics of the jittering objects and the phase space available to their dynamics. Consequently, the study of transport at the macro- and nanoscales must address both Brownian motion and entropic effects. With this survey we report on recent advances in the theoretical and numerical investigation of stochastic transport occurring either in micro-sized geometries of varying cross section or in narrow channels wherein the diffusing particles are hindered from passing each other (single file diffusion). For particles undergoing biased diffusion in static suspension media enclosed by confining geometries, transport exhibits intriguing features such as (i) a decrease of nonlinear mobility with increasing temperature or, also, (ii) a broad excess peak of the effective diffusion above the free diffusion limit. These paradoxical aspects can be understood in terms of entropic contributions resulting from the restricted dynamics in phase space. If, in addition, the suspension medium is subjected to external, time-dependent forcing, rectification or segregation of the diffusing Brownian particles becomes possible. Likewise, the diffusion in very narrow, spatially modulated channels gets modified via contact particle-particle interactions, which induce anomalous sub-diffusion. The effective sub-diffusion constant for a driven single file also develops a resonance-like structure as a function of the confining coupling constant.

Optimal strategy for controlling transport in inertial Brownian motors

In order to optimize the directed motion of an inertial Brownian motor, we identify the operating conditions that both maximize the motor current and minimize its dispersion. Extensive numerical simulation of an inertial rocked ratchet displays that two quantifiers, namely the energetic efficiency and the Péclet number (or equivalently the Fano factor), suffice to determine the regimes of optimal transport. The effective diffusion of this rocked inertial Brownian motor can be expressed as a generalized fluctuation theorem of the Green -- Kubo type. Addendum and Erratum The expression for the effective diffusion of an inertial, periodically driven Brownian particle in an asymmetric, periodic potential is compared with the step number diffusion which is extracted from the corresponding coarse grained hopping process specifying the number of covered spatial periods within each temporal period. The two expressions are typically different and involve the correlations between the number of hops.

100 Years of Brownian motion

In the year 1905 Albert Einstein published four papers that raised him to a giant in the history of science of all times. These works encompass the photon hypothesis (for which he obtained the Nobel prize in 1921), his first two papers on (special) relativity theory and, of course, his first paper on Brownian motion, entitled "Über die von der molekularkinetischen Theorie der Wärme geforderte Bewegung von in ruhenden Flüssigkeiten suspendierten Teilchen'' (submitted on May 11, 1905). Thanks to Einstein intuition, the phenomenon observed by the Scottish botanist Rober Brown in 1827 - a little more than a naturalist's curiosity - becomes the keystone of a fully probabilistic formulation of statistical mechanics and a well-established subject of physical investigation which we celebrate in this Focus issue entitled - for this reason - : ``100 Years of Brownian Motion''.
