Qualitative Aspects of Periodic Traveling Waves for the Sinh-Gordon equation

This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of several aspects of the sinh-Gordon equation within a periodic setting. Our investigation proceeds in three main stages. First we establish the existence of periodic solutions for a fixed wave speed and varying periods by applying the mountain pass theorem. Subsequently, for a fixed period, we construct a family of periodic solutions that depend smoothly on the wave speed; this is achieved via the implicit function theorem. The spectral stability of these waves is then rigorously addressed. We perform a detailed spectral analysis of the linearized operator around the wave of fixed period. A key element in this analysis is the monotonicity of the period map, which, when combined with Morse index theory, enables us to fully characterize the non-positive spectrum of the projected operator in the space of zero-mean periodic functions. Finally, by employing the Hamiltonian-Krein index analysis, we determine the spectral stability and instability of the constructed waves. We additionally discuss qualitative aspects of the Cauchy problem associated with the sinh-Gordon equation, including local well-posedness and blow-up phenomena. The former supports a new linearization of the problem, while the latter predicts the spectral instability of the wave.

Existence and spectral stability of small-amplitude periodic waves for the 2D nonlinear focusing Schrodinger equation

The purpose of this paper is to establish the existence and spectral stability, with respect to perturbations of the same period, of double-periodic standing waves for the nonlinear focusing Schr\"odinger equation posed on the bi-dimensional torus. We first show that such double-periodic solutions can be constructed via local and global bifurcation theory, under the assumption that the kernel of the linearized operator around the equilibrium solution is one-dimensional. In addition, we prove that these local and global solutions minimize an appropriate variational problem, which enables us to derive spectral properties of the linearized operator about the periodic wave. Finally, we establish the spectral stability of small-amplitude periodic waves by applying the techniques developed in \cite{KapitulaKevrekidisSandstedeII} and \cite{KapitulaKevrekidisSandstedeI}.

Periodic Waves for the Regularized Camassa-Holm Equation: Existence and Spectral Stability

In this paper, we investigate the existence and spectral stability of periodic traveling wave solutions for the regularized Camassa-Holm equation. To establish the existence of periodic waves, we employ tools from bifurcation theory to construct solutions with the zero-mean property. We also prove that such waves may not exist for the well-known Camassa-Holm equation. Regarding spectral stability, we analyze the difference between the number of negative eigenvalues of the second variation of the Lyapunov functional at the wave, restricted to the space of zero-mean periodic functions, and the number of negative eigenvalues of the matrix formed from the tangent space associated with the low-order conserved quantities of the evolution model. Finally, we address the problem of orbital stability as a consequence of the spectral stability.

Transverse instability of periodic standing waves for the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation

In this paper, we determine the transverse instability of periodic standing wave solutions for the generalized Schrödinger equation with fractional power nonlinearity. The existence of periodic waves is determined by using a constrained minimization problem in the complex setting, and it is shown that the corresponding real solution, depending on the power nonlinearity, is always positive or changes its sign. The transverse instability results are then determined by applying the main result given in \cite{RoussetTzvetkov} for the periodic case.

Transversal spectral instability of periodic traveling waves for the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

In this paper, we determine the transversal instability of periodic traveling wave solutions of the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in two space dimensions. Using an adaptation of the arguments in \cite{nikolay} in the periodic context, it is possible to prove that all positive and one-dimensional $L-$periodic waves are spectrally (transversally) unstable. In addition, when periodic sign-changing waves exist, we also obtain the same property when the associated projection operator defined in the zero mean Sobolev space has only one negative eigenvalue.

Periodic waves for the cubic-quintic non-linear Schrödinger equation: existence and orbital stability

In this paper, we prove existence and orbital stability results of periodic standing waves for the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We use the implicit function theorem to construct a smooth curve of explicit periodic waves with \textit{dnoidal} profile and such construction can be used to prove that the associated period map is strictly increasing in terms of the energy levels. The monotonicity is also useful to obtain the behaviour of the non-positive spectrum for the associated linearized operator around the wave. Concerning the stability, we prove that the dnoidal waves are orbitally stable in the energy space restricted to the even functions.

Orbital stability of periodic standing waves for the cubic fractional nonlinear Schrodinger equation

In this paper, the existence and orbital stability of the periodic standing waves solutions for the nonlinear fractional Schrodinger (fNLS) equation with cubic nonlinearity is studied. The existence is determined by using a minimizing constrained problem in the complex setting and we it is showed that the corresponding real solution is always positive. The orbital stability is proved by combining some tools regarding positive operators, the oscillation theorem for fractional Hill operators and a Vakhitov-Kolokolov condition, well known for Schrodinger equations. We then perform a numerical approach to generate periodic standing wave solutions of the fNLS equation by using the Petviashvili's iteration method. We also investigate the Vakhitov-Kolokolov condition numerically which cannot be obtained analytically for some values of the order of the fractional derivative.

On the existence, uniqueness and stability of Periodic Waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation

The existence, uniqueness and stability of periodic traveling waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation is considered. In our approach, we give sufficient conditions to prove a uniqueness result for the single-lobe solution obtained by a constrained minimization problem. The spectral stability is then shown by determining that the associated linearized operator around the wave restricted to the orthogonal of the tangent space related to the momentum and mass at the periodic wave has no negative eigenvalues. We propose the Petviashvili's method to investigate the spectral stability of the periodic waves for the fractional Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equation, numerically. Some remarks concerning the orbital stability of periodic traveling waves are also presented.

New variational characterization of periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation

Periodic waves in the fractional Korteweg-de Vries equation have been previously characterized as constrained minimizers of energy subject to fixed momentum and mass. Here we characterize these periodic waves as constrained minimizers of the quadratic form of energy subject to fixed cubic part of energy and the zero mean. This new variational characterization allows us to unfold the existence region of travelling periodic waves and to give a sharp criterion for spectral stability of periodic waves with respect to perturbations of the same period. The sharp stability criterion is given by the monotonicity of the map from the wave speed to the wave momentum similarly to the stability criterion for solitary waves.

Instability of $H^1$-stable peakons in the Camassa-Holm equation

It is well-known that peakons in the Camassa-Holm equation are $H^1$-orbitally stable thanks to the presence of conserved quantities and properties of peakons as constrained energy minimizers. By using the method of characteristics, we prove that piecewise $C^1$ perturbations to peakons grow in time in spite of their stability in the $H^1$-norm. We also show that the linearized stability analysis near peakons contradicts the $H^1$-orbital stability result, hence passage from linear to nonlinear theory is false in $H^1$.
