The E(11) origin of all maximal supergravities - the hierarchy of field-strengths

Starting from $E_{11}$ and the space-time translations we construct an algebra that promotes the global $E_{11}$ symmetries to local ones, and consider all its possible massive deformations. The Jacobi identities imply that such deformations are uniquely determined by a single tensor that belongs to the same representation of the internal symmetry group as the $D-1$ forms specified by $E_{11}$. The non-linear realisation of the deformed algebra gives the field strengths of the theory which are those of any possible gauged maximal supergravity theory in any dimension. All the possible deformed algebras are in one to one correspondence with all the possible massive maximal supergravity theories. The hierarchy of fields inherent in the $E_{11}$ formulation plays an important role in the derivation. The tensor that determines the deformation can be identified with the embedding tensor used previously to parameterise gauged supergravities. Thus we provide a very efficient, simple and unified derivation of the bosonic sector, and in the absence of gravity, of all maximal gauged supergravities from $E_{11}$.

Local E(11)

We give a method of deriving the field-strengths of all massless and massive maximal supergravity theories in any dimension starting from the Kac-Moody algebra $E_{11}$. Considering the subalgebra of $E_{11}$ that acts on the fields in the non-linear realisation as a global symmetry, we show how this is promoted to a gauge symmetry enlarging the algebra by the inclusion of additional generators. We show how this works in eleven dimensions, and we call the resulting enlarged algebra $E_{11}^{local}$. Torus reduction to $D$ dimensions corresponds to taking a subalgebra of $E_{11}^{local}$, called $E_{11,D}^{local}$, that encodes the full gauge algebra of the corresponding $D$-dimensional massless supergravity. We show that each massive maximal supergravity in $D$ dimensions is a non-linear realisation of an algebra $\tilde{E}_{11,D}^{local}$. We show how this works in detail for the case of Scherk-Schwarz reduction of IIB to nine dimensions, and in particular we show how $\tilde{E}_{11,9}^{local}$ arises as a subalgebra of the algebra $E_{11,10B}^{local}$ associated to the ten-dimensional IIB theory. This subalgebra corresponds to taking a combination of generators which is different to the massless case. We then show that $\tilde{E}_{11,D}^{local}$ appears as a deformation of the massless algebra $E_{11,D}^{local}$ in which the commutation relations between the $E_{11}$ and the additional generators are modified. We explicitly illustrate how the deformed algebra is constructed in the case of massive IIA and of gauged five-dimensional supergravity. These results prove the naturalness and power of the method.

Dual Gravity and Matter

We consider the problem of finding a dual formulation of gravity in the presence of non-trivial matter couplings. In the absence of matter a dual graviton can be introduced only for linearised gravitational interactions. We show that the coupling of linearised gravity to matter poses obstructions to the usual construction and comment on possible resolutions of this difficulty.

Duality Symmetries and G^{+++} Theories

We show that the non-linear realisations of all the very extended algebras G^{+++}, except the B and C series which we do not consider, contain fields corresponding to all possible duality symmetries of the on-shell degrees of freedom of these theories. This result also holds for G_2^{+++} and we argue that the non-linear realisation of this algebra accounts precisely for the form fields present in the corresponding supersymmetric theory. We also find a simple necessary condition for the roots to belong to a G^{+++} algebra.

E(11)-extended spacetime and gauged supergravities

We formulate all the five dimensional gauged maximal supergravity theories as non-linear realisations of the semi-direct product of E_{11} and a set of generators which transform according to the first fundamental representation l of E_{11}. The latter introduces a generalised space-time which plays a crucial role for these theories. We derive the E_{11} and l transformations of all the form fields and their dynamics. We also formulate the five dimensional gauged supergravity theories using the closure of the supersymmetry algebra. We show that this closes on the bosonic field content predicted by E_{11} and we derive the field transformations and the dynamics of this theory. The results are in precise agreement with those found from the E_{11} formulation. This provides a very detailed check of E_{11} and also the first substantial evidence for the generalised space-time. The results can be generalised to all gauged maximal supergravities, thus providing a unified framework of all these theories as part of E_{11}.

Real forms of very extended Kac-Moody algebras and theories with eight supersymmetries

We consider all theories with eight supersymmetries whose reduction to three dimensions gives rise to scalars that parametrise symmetric manifolds. We conjecture that these theories are non-linear realisations of very-extended Kac-Moody algebras for suitable choices of real forms. We show for the most interesting cases that the bosonic sector of the supersymmetric theory is precisely reproduced by the corresponding non-linear realisation.

The E_{11} origin of all maximal supergravities

Starting from the eleven dimensional E_{11} non-linear realisation of M-theory we compute all possible forms, that is objects with totally antisymmetrised indices, that occur in four dimensions and above as well as all the 1-forms and 2-forms in three dimensions. In any dimension D, the D-1-forms lead to maximal supergravity theories with cosmological constants and they are in precise agreement with the patterns of gauging found in any dimension using supersymmetry. The D-forms correspond to the presence of space-filling branes which are crucial for the consistency of orientifold models and have not been derived from an alternative approach, with the exception of the 10-dimensional case. It follows that the gaugings of supergravities and the spacetime-filling branes possess an eleven dimensional origin within the E_{11} formulation of M-theory. This and previous results very strongly suggest that all the fields in the adjoint representation of E_{11} have a physical interpretation.

SL(2,R)-invariant IIB Brane Actions

We give a universal SL(2,R)-invariant expression for all IIB p-brane actions with p=-1,1,3,5,7,9. The Wess-Zumino terms in the brane actions are determined by requiring (i) target space gauge invariance and (ii) the presence of a single Born-Infeld vector. We find that for p=7 (p=9) brane actions with these properties only exist for orbits that contain the standard D7-brane (D9-brane). We comment about the actions for the other orbits.

Dual fields and E_{11}

We show that the adjoint representation of E_{11} contains generators corresponding to the infinite possible dual descriptions of the bosonic on-shell degrees of freedom of eleven dimensional supergravity. We also give an interpretation for the fields corresponding to many of the other generators in the adjoint representation.

IIB Nine-branes

We calculate the tensions of all half-supersymmetric nine-branes in IIB string theory. In particular, we point out the existence of a solitonic IIB nine-brane. We find that the D9-brane and its duality transformations parametrize a two-dimensional surface in a four-dimensional space.

IIA Ten-forms and the Gauge Algebras of Maximal Supergravity Theories

We show that IIA supergravity can be extended with two independent 10-form potentials. These give rise to a single BPS IIA 9-brane. We investigate the bosonic gauge algebra of both IIA and IIB supergravity in the presence of 10-form potentials and point out an intriguing relation with the symmetry algebra $E_{11}$, which has been conjectured to be the underlying symmetry of string theory/M-theory.

IIB Supergravity Revisited

We show in the SU(1,1)-covariant formulation that IIB supergravity allows the introduction of a doublet and a quadruplet of ten-form potentials. The Ramond-Ramond ten-form potential which is associated with the SO(32) Type I superstring is in the quadruplet. Our results are consistent with a recently proposed $E_{11}$ symmetry underlying string theory. For the reader's convenience we present the full supersymmetry and gauge transformations of {\it all} fields both in the manifestly SU(1,1) covariant Einstein frame and in the real U(1) gauge fixed string frame.

Massive higher spins and holography

We review recent progress towards the understanding of higher spin gauge symmetry breaking in AdS space from a holographic vantage point. According to the AdS/CFT correspondence, N=4 SYM theory at vanishing coupling constant should be dual to a theory in AdS which exhibits higher spin gauge symmetry enhancement. When the SYM coupling is non-zero, all but a handful of HS currents are violated by anomalies, and correspondingly local higher spin symmetry in the bulk gets spontaneously broken. In agreement with previous results and holographic expectations, we find that, barring one notable exception (spin 1 eating spin 0), the Goldstone modes responsible for HS symmetry breaking in AdS have non-vanishing mass even in the limit in which the gauge symmetry is restored. We show that spontaneous breaking a' la Stueckelberg implies that the mass of the relevant spin s'=s-1 Goldstone field is exactly the one predicted by the correspondence.

On the fermionic Grande Bouffe: more on higher spin symmetry breaking in AdS/CFT

We discuss fermionic higher spin gauge symmetry breaking in AdS space from a holographic perspective. Analogously to the recently discussed bosonic case, the higher spin Goldstino mode responsible for the symmetry breaking has a non-vanishing mass in the limit in which the gauge symmetry is restored. This result is precisely in agreement with the AdS/CFT correspondence, which implies that N=4 SYM at vanishing coupling constant is dual to a theory in AdS which exhibits higher spin gauge symmetry enhancement. When the SYM coupling is non-zero, the current conservation condition becomes anomalous, and correspondingly the local higher spin symmetry in the bulk gets spontaneously broken. We also show that the mass of the Goldstino mode is exactly the one predicted by the correspondence. Finally, we obtain the form of a class of fermionic higher spin currents in the SYM side.

Truncations of the D9-brane action and type-I strings

The low-energy effective action of type-I superstring theory in ten dimensions is obtained performing a truncation of type-IIB supergravity in a background where D9-branes are present. The open sector corresponds to the first order in the low-energy expansion of the D9-brane action in a type-I background. In hep-th/9901055 it was shown that there are two ways of performing a type-I truncation of the D9-brane action, and the resulting truncated action was obtained in a flat background. We extend this result to a generic type-I background, and argue that the two different truncations are in correspondence with the open sector of the low-energy effective action of the two different consistent ten-dimensional type-I string theories, namely the SO(32) superstring and the $USp(32)$ non-supersymmetric string.

Low-energy structure of six-dimensional open-string vacua

This dissertation reviews some properties of the low-energy effective actions for six dimensional open-string models. The first chapter is a pedagogical introduction about supergravity theories. In the second chapter closed strings are analyzed, with particular emphasis on type IIB, whose orientifold projection, in order to build type-I models, is the subject of the third chapter. Original results are reported in chapters 4 and 5. In chapter 4 we describe the complete coupling of (1,0) six-dimensional supergravity to tensor, vector and hypermultiplets. The generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism implies that the resulting theory embodies factorized gauge and supersymmetry anomalies, to be disposed of by fermion loops. Consequently, the low-energy theory is determined by the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, rather than by the requirement of supersymmetry, and this procedure does not fix a quartic coupling for the gauginos. In chapter 5 we describe the low-energy effective actions for type-I models with brane supersymmetry breaking, resulting form the simultaneous presence of supersymmetric bulks, with one or more gravitinos, and non-supersymmetric combinations of BPS branes.The consistency of the resulting gravitino couplings implies that local supersymmetry is non-linearly realized on some branes. We analyze in detail the ten-dimensional $USp(32)$ model and the six-dimensional (1,0) models.

Geometric Couplings and Brane Supersymmetry Breaking

Orientifold vacua allow the simultaneous presence of supersymmetric bulks, with one or more gravitinos, and non-supersymmetric combinations of BPS branes. This ``brane supersymmetry breaking'' raises the issue of consistency for the resulting gravitino couplings, and Dudas and Mourad recently provided convincing arguments to this effect for the ten-dimensional $USp(32)$ model. These rely on a non-linear realization of local supersymmetry {\it à la} Volkov-Akulov, although no gravitino mass term is present, and the couplings have a nice geometrical interpretation in terms of ``dressed'' bulk fields, aside from a Wess-Zumino-like term, resulting from the supersymmetrization of the Chern-Simons couplings. Here we show that {\it all} couplings can be given a geometrical interpretation, albeit in the dual 6-form model, whose bulk includes a Wess-Zumino term, so that the non-geometric ones are in fact demanded by the geometrization of their duals. We also determine the low-energy couplings for six-dimensional (1,0) models with brane supersymmetry breaking. Since these include both Chern-Simons and Wess-Zumino terms, only the resulting field equations are geometrical, aside from contributions due to vectors of supersymmetric sectors.

All Couplings of Minimal Six-dimensional Supergravity

We describe the complete coupling of $(1,0)$ six-dimensional supergravity to tensor, vector and hypermultiplets. The generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism implies that the resulting theory embodies factorized gauge and supersymmetry anomalies, to be disposed of by fermion loops. Consequently, the low-energy theory is determined by the Wess-Zumino consistency conditions, rather than by the requirement of supersymmetry. As already shown for the case without hypermultiplets, this procedure does not fix a quartic coupling for the gauginos. With respect to these previous results, the inclusion of charged hypermultiplets gives additional terms in the supersymmetry anomaly. We also consider the case in which abelian vectors are present. As in the absence of hypermultiplets, abelian vectors allow additional couplings. Finally, we apply the Pasti-Sorokin-Tonin prescription to this model.
