Gapped 1/9 Magnetization Plateau in the Anisotropic Kagome Antiferromagnet Y-kapellasite

Fractional magnetization plateaus provide a sensitive probe of many-body spin states in frustrated quantum magnets, yet their microscopic origin in kagome antiferromagnets remains unresolved. This is particularly true of the mysterious $1/9$ plateau, which is predicted by theory but infrequently observed in experiment. Here, we investigate this problem in the $S = 1/2$ anisotropic kagome antiferromagnet Y-kapellasite, Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$, using pulsed-field magnetization measurements on single crystals and high-field $^{35}$Cl NMR. We identify a hierarchy of field-induced fractional features, including $1/3$ and $1/9$ plateaus, as well as a weaker low-field feature. Analysis of the NMR spectra and the magnetic susceptibility across the $1/9$ plateau demonstrate that it is accompanied by an ordered local spin configuration, a strong suppression of low-energy spin fluctuations and activated behavior, consistent with a gapped fractional state. These features differ from those in the only other material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_{1-y}$(OH)$_y$] in which this plateau is observed, implying a surprising robustness of the $1/9$ state to the details of the underlying magnetism.

Emergence of a Fluctuating Ground State in Y-kapellasite under Pressure

Y-kapellasite (Y$_3$Cu$_9$(OH)$_{19}$Cl$_8$), which hosts an original anisotropic kagome sublattice, is a promising candidate for studying elusive and complex correlated physics. It exhibits a theoretically predicted in-plane $(1/3, 1/3)$ magnetic order [1] but its magnetic interaction values place it close to a phase boundary to a spin liquid state [2]. Our $\mu$SR measurements under hydrostatic pressure demonstrate the complete suppression of static magnetism in favor of a fully dynamical ground state at $2.3$~GPa. Complementary high-pressure x-ray and optical phonon measurements reveal a gradual reduction of the kagome anisotropy, enhancing magnetic frustration without structural transitions. Our results establish Y-kapellasite as a rare clean kagome model in which long-range order is suppressed by pressure-tuned frustration, the first fingerprint for the realization of a quantum spin liquid without strong disorder.

NMR study of the local magnetic order in the kagome Weyl semimetal Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

A magnetic Weyl semimetal presents the intriguing possibility of controlling topological properties through magnetic order. The kagome compound \CoSnS~has emerged as one of the most thoroughly characterized magnetic Weyl semimetals, yet the potential coexistence of a ferromagnetic state below $T_c$ = 172~K with a non-collinear antiferromagnetic phase or a glassy state remains unresolved. We employ $^{59}$Co NMR to gain a local perspective on the magnetic order. The magnetic and electric field gradient tensors at room temperature are determined by fitting the NMR spectra using evolutionary algorithms. Zero-field NMR measurements reveal that all Co sites are equivalent in the magnetic phase at low temperatures and up to 90~K. The local magnetic field follows in intensity the macroscopic magnetization as a function of temperature and is tilted from the c-axis by a few degrees toward the nearest triangle center. Above 90~K, a shoulder appears on the low-field side, which we attribute to a preferential tilting of the local field in one direction, breaking the equivalence between the three Co sites of the kagome structure. We rule out any coexistence with an in-plane antiferromagnetic phase and suggest instead that in-plane ferromagnetic-like moments appear above 90~K and play an increasing role in the magnetic order up to the magnetic transition.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in a mixed valent metallic pyrochlore iridate Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in some fermionic systems have attracted significant interest in last few decades. Certain pyrochlore iridates with stronger spin-orbit coupling strength have recently been added to the list. Here, we provide evidence of such a non-Fermi liquid ground state in another mixed valent metallic pyrochlore iridate Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$, through the combined investigation of electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic properties as a function of temperature ($T$) and applied magnetic field ($H$). Resistivity measurement showed a linear temperature dependence down to 15~K below which it shows $ρ\sim T^{3/2}$ dependence while magnetic susceptibility diverges as $χ$(T) $\sim$ $T^{-α}$ ($α< 1$) below 10~K. While a strong negative $Θ_{CW}$ has been observed from Curie-Weiss fitting, absence of any long range order down to 80~mK only indicates presence of strong inherent geometric frustration in the system. Heat capacity data showed $C_p$ $\sim$ $T\ln(T_0/T)$ + $βT^3$ dependence below 15~K down to 1.8~K. More importantly spin-orbit coupling strength by x-ray absorption spectroscopy was found to be weaker in Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ compared to other pyrochlore iridates. In absence of any large moment rare earth magnetic ion, Pb$_2$Ir$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ presents a rare example of an irirdate system showing non-Fermi liquid behaviour due to disordered distribution of Ir$^{4+}$ and Ir$^{5+}$ having markedly different strengths of spin-orbit coupling which might offer a prescription for achieving new non-Fermi liquid systems.

ARPES study of orbital characters, symmetry breakings and pseudogaps in doped and pure Sr2IrO4

Sr2IrO4 is characterized by a large spin-orbit coupling, which gives rise to bands with strongly entangled spin and orbital characters, called J=1/2 and J=3/2. We use light-polarization dependent ARPES to study directly the orbital character of these bands and fully map out their dispersion. We observe bands in very good agreement with our cluster dynamical mean-field theory calculations. We show that the J=1/2 band, the closest to the Fermi level Ef, is dominated by dxz character along kx and dyz along ky. This is actually in agreement with an isotropic J=1/2 character on average, but this large orbital dependence in k-space was mostly overlooked before. It gives rise to strong modulations of the ARPES intensity that we explain and carefully take into account to compare dispersions in equivalent directions of the Brillouin zone. Although the latter dispersions look different at first, suggesting possible symmetry breakings, they are found essentially similar, once corrected for these intensity variations. In particular, the pseudogap-like features close to the $X$ point appearing in the nearly metallic 15% Rh-doped Sr2IrO4 strongly depend on experimental conditions. We reveal that there is nevertheless an energy scale of 30meV below which spectral weight is suppressed, independent of the experimental conditions, which gives a reliable basis to analyze this behavior. We suggest it is caused by disorder.

Local study of the insulating quantum kagome antiferromagnets YCu3(OH)6OxCl3-x (x=0,1/3)

The quantum kagome antiferromagnets YCu3(OH)6OxCl3-x (x=0,1/3) are produced using a unified solid state synthesis route for polycrystalline samples. From structural refinements based on neutron diffraction data, we clarify the structure of the Y3Cu9(OH)18OCl8 (x=1/3) compound and provide a revised chemical formula. We use muon spin relaxation, as a local probe of magnetism, to investigate the exotic low temperature properties in the two compounds. In agreement with the low temperature neutron diffraction data, we find no evidence for long range ordering in both materials but they exhibit distinct ground states: while disordered static magnetism develops in the x=0 compound, we conclude on the stabilization of a quantum spin liquid in the x=1/3 one, since the local fields remain fully dynamical. Our findings are in contrast to previous reports based on thermodynamical measurements only. We then discuss their origin on the basis of structural details and specific heat measurements. In particular, the x=1/3 compound appears to realize an original spatially anisotropic kagome model.

Formation of an incoherent metallic state in Rh-doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is the archetype of the spin-orbit Mott insulator, but the nature of the metallic states that may emerge from this type of insulator is still not very well known. We study with angle-resolved photoemission the insulator-to-metal transition observed in Sr$_2$Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$O$_4$ when Ir is substituted by Rh (0.02 < $x$ < 0.35). The originality of the Rh doping is that Ir and Rh, which are formally isovalent, adopt different charge states, a rather unusual and inhomogeneous situation. We show that the evolution to the metallic state can be essentially understood as a shift of the Fermi level into the lower Hubbard band of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The Mott gap appears quite insensitive to the introduction of up to $\sim$20\% holes in this band. The metallic phase, which forms for $x$ > 0.07, is not a Fermi liquid. It is characterized by the absence of quasiparticles, unrenormalized band dispersion compared to calculations and an $\sim$30-meV pseudo-gap on the entire Fermi surface.

Possible quadrupolar nematic phase in the frustrated spin chain LiCuSbO$_4$: an NMR investigation

The frustrated one-dimensional (1D) quantum magnet LiCuSbO$_4$ is one rare realization of the $J_1-J_2$ spin chain model with an easily accessible saturation field, formerly estimated to 12~T. Exotic multipolar nematic phases were theoretically predicted in such compounds just below the saturation field, but without unambiguous experimental observation so far. In this paper we present extensive experimental research of the compound in the wide temperature (30mK$-$300K) and field (0$-$13.3T) range by muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), $^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic susceptibility (SQUID). $μ$SR experiments in zero magnetic field demonstrate the absence of long range 3D ordering down to 30mK. Together with former heat capacity data [S.E. Dutton \emph{et al}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 187206 (2012)], magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest short range correlated vector chiral phase in the field range $0-4$T. In the intermediate field values (5$-$12T), the system enters in a 3D ordered spin density wave phase with 0.75$μ_B$ per copper site at lowest temperatures (125mK), estimated by NMR. At still higher field, the magnetization is found to be saturated above 13T where the spin lattice $T_1^{-1}$ relaxation reveals a spin gap estimated to 3.2(2)K. We narrow down the possibility of observing a multipolar nematic phase to the range 12.5$-$13T.

Spin dynamics in the S =1/2 kagome compound vesignieite, Cu3Ba(VO5H)2

We report the study of high quality samples of the frustrated S = 1/2 kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite, Cu3Ba(VO5H)2. Neutron powder diffraction measurements evidence the high quality of the kagome lattice and show no sign of a transition to long-range order. A kink in the susceptibility below T = 9 K is matched to a reduction in paramagnetic-like correlations in the diffraction data and a slowing of the spin dynamics observed by MuSR. Our results point to an exotic quantum state below 9 K with coexistance of both dynamical and small frozen moments \sim 0.1 \muB. We propose that Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction is large enough in this system to stabilize this novel quantum ground state.

Quantum Kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2

The frustration of antiferromagnetic interactions on the loosely connected kagome lattice associated to the enhancement of quantum fluctuations for S=1/2 spins was acknowledged long ago as a keypoint to stabilize novel ground states of magnetic matter. Only very recently, the model compound Herbersmithite, ZnCu3(OH)6Cl2, a structurally perfect kagome antiferromagnet, could be synthesized and enables a close comparison to theories. We review and classify various experimental results obtained over the past years and underline some of the pending issues.
