New bounds on the high Sobolev norms of the 1d NLS solutions

We introduce modified energies that are suitable to get upper bounds on the high Sobolev norms for solutions to the $1$D periodic NLS. Our strategy is rather flexible and allows us to get a new and simpler proof of the bounds obtained by Bourgain in the case of the quintic nonlinearity, as well as its extension to the case of higher order nonlinearities. Our main ingredients are a combination of integration by parts and classical dispersive estimates.

Dispersion for the wave equation inside strictly convex domains II: the general case

We consider the wave equation on a manifold $(Ω,g)$ of dimension $d\geq 2$ with smooth strictly convex boundary $\partialΩ\neq\emptyset$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We construct a sharp local in time parametrix and then proceed to obtain dispersion estimates: our fixed time decay rate for the Green function exhibits a $t^{1/4}$ loss with respect to the boundary less case. We precisely describe where and when these losses occur and relate them to swallowtail type singularities in the wave front set, proving that our decay is optimal. Moreover, we derive better than expected Strichartz estimates, balancing lossy long time estimates at a given incidence with short time ones with no loss: for $d=3$, it heuristically means that, on average the decay loss is only $t^{1/6}$.

Strichartz estimates for the wave equation on a 2d model convex domain

We prove better Strichartz type estimates than expected from the (optimal) dispersion we obtained in our earlier work on a 2d convex model. This follows from taking full advantage of the space-time localization of caustics in the parametrix we obtain, despite their number increasing like the inverse square root of the distance from the source to the boundary. As a consequence, we improve known Strichartz estimates for the wave equation. Several improvements on our previous parametrix construction are obtained along the way and are of independent interest for further applications.

On the growth of Sobolev norms for NLS on $2d$ and $3d$ manifolds

Using suitable modified energies we study higher order Sobolev norms' growth in time for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on a generic $2d$ or $3d$ compact manifold. In $2d$ we extend earlier results that dealt only with cubic nonlinearities, and get polynomial in time bounds for any higher order nonlinearities. In $3d$, we prove that solutions to the cubic NLS grow at most exponentially, while for sub-cubic NLS we get polynomial bounds on the growth of the $H^2$-norm.

Blow-up of critical Besov norms at a potential Navier-Stokes singularity

We prove that if an initial datum to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in any critical Besov space $\dot B^{-1+\frac 3p}_{p,q}(\mathbb{R}^3)$, with $3 0$, then the norm of the solution in that Besov space becomes unbounded at time $T$. This result, which treats all critical Besov spaces where local existence is known, generalizes the result of Escauriaza, Seregin and Sverak (Uspekhi Mat. Nauk 58(2(350)):3-44, 2003) concerning suitable weak solutions blowing up in $L^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$. Our proof uses profile decompositions and is based on our previous work (Math. Ann. 355(4):1527--1559, 2013) which provided an alternative proof of the $L^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$ result. For very large values of $p$, an iterative method, which may be of independent interest, enables us to use some techniques from the $L^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$ setting. Dispersion for the wave equation inside strictly convex domains I: the Friedlander model case

We consider a model case for a strictly convex domain of dimension $d\geq 2$ with smooth boundary and we describe dispersion for the wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. More specifically, we obtain the optimal fixed time decay rate for the smoothed out Green function: a $t^{1/4}$ loss occurs with respect to the boundary less case, due to repeated occurrences of swallowtail type singularities in the wave front set.

Self-improving bounds for the Navier-Stokes equations

We consider regular solutions to the Navier-Stokes equation and provide an extension to the Escauriaza-Seregin-Sverak blow-up criterion in the negative regularity Besov scale, with regularity arbitrarly close to -1. Our results rely on turning a priori bounds for the solution in negative Besov spaces into bounds in the positive regularity scale.

On the cubic NLS on 3D compact domains

We prove bilinear estimates for the Schrödinger equation on 3D domains, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. On non-trapping domains, they match the $\mathbb{R}^3$ case, while on bounded domains they match the generic boundary less manifold case. As an application, we obtain global well-posedness for the defocusing cubic NLS for data in $H^s_0(Ω)$, $1<s\leq 3$, with $Ω$ any bounded domain with smooth boundary.

A profile decomposition approach to the $L^\infty_t(L^3_x)$ Navier-Stokes regularity criterion

In this paper we continue to develop an alternative viewpoint on recent studies of Navier-Stokes regularity in critical spaces, a program which was started in the recent work by C. Kenig and the second author (Ann Inst H Poincaré Anal Non Linéaire 28(2):159-187, 2011). Specifically, we prove that strong solutions which remain bounded in the space $L^3(R^3)$ do not become singular in finite time, a known result established by Escauriaza, Seregin and Sverak (Uspekhi Mat Nauk 58(2(350)):3-44, 2003) in the context of suitable weak solutions. Here, we use the method of "critical elements" which was recently developed by Kenig and Merle to treat critical dispersive equations. Our main tool is a "profile decomposition" for the Navier-Stokes equations in critical Besov spaces which we develop here. As a byproduct of this tool, assuming a singularity-producing initial datum for Navier-Stokes exists in a critical Lebesgue or Besov space, we show there is one with minimal norm, generalizing a result of Rusin and Sverak (J Funct Anal 260(3):879-891, 2011).

Unconditional well-posedness for wave maps

We prove uniqueness of solutions to the wave map equation in the natural class, namely $ (u, \partial_t u) \in C([0,T); \dot{H}^{d/2})\times C^1([0,T); \dot{H}^{d/2-1})$ in dimensions $d\geq 4$. This is achieved through estimating the difference of two solutions at a lower regularity level. In order to reduce to the Coulomb gauge, one has to localize the gauge change in suitable cones as well as estimate the difference between the frames and connections associated to each solutions and take advantage of the assumption that the target manifold has bounded curvature.

On the energy critical Schrodinger equation in 3D non-trapping domains

We prove that the quintic Schrodinger equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions is locally well posed for H^{1}_{0} data on any smooth, non-trapping domain of R^3. The key ingredient is a smoothing effect in L^{5}_{x}L^{2}_{t} for the linear equation. We also derive scattering results for the whole range of defocusing sub-quintic Schrodinger equations outside star-shaped domains.

Square function and heat flow estimates on domains

The first purpose of this note is to provide a proof of the usual square function estimate on Lp (?). It turns out to follow directly from a generic Mikhlin multiplier theorem obtained by Alexopoulos, which mostly relies on Gaussian bounds on the heat kernel. We also provide a simple proof of a weaker version of the square function estimate, which is enough in most instances involving dispersive PDEs. Moreover, we obtain, by a relatively simple integration by parts, several useful Lp (?; H) bounds for the derivatives of the heat ?ow with values in a given Hilbert space H.

Bilinear virial identities and applications

We prove bilinear virial identities for the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, which are extensions of the Morawetz interaction inequalities. We recover and extend known bilinear improvements to Strichartz inequalities and provide applications to various nonlinear problems, most notably on domains with boundaries.

Global existence for energy critical waves in 3-D domains

We prove that the defocusing quintic wave equation, with Dirichlet boundary conditions, is globally well posed on $H^1_0(Ω) \times L^2(Ω)$ for any smooth (compact) domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$. The main ingredient in the proof is an $L^5$ spectral projector estimate, obtained recently by Smith and Sogge, combined with a precise study of the boundary value problem.
