Symmetry protected quantum many body scars through half-gauging

We study the interplay between symmetry defects insertion and the phenomena of quantum many body scarring. We exploit a class of models obtained from an embedding mechanism that defines a stochastic matrix form hamiltonian, hosting zero energy many body scarred states. Such models display an interesting playground to explore the consequences of dualities, half-gauging operations and so on. We first show that inside this class of models, what are the conditions to still have scared states after defect insertion. The main result of our work is a detailed analysis of half-gauging in such chains, which introduces a non-trivial interface in our system, leading to scarred states protected by the underlying symmetries. The conclusions for half-gauged scarred systems are general and may lead to fruitful directions for higher dimension scarred physics and their robustness.

Quantum many-body scarring from Kramers-Wannier duality

Kramers-Wannier duality, a hallmark of the Ising model, has recently gained renewed interest through its reinterpretation as a non-invertible symmetry with a state-level action. Using sequential quantum circuits (SQC), we argue that this duality governs the stability of quantum many-body scar (QMBS) states in a nonintegrable model, depending on whether the dual preserves the embedding conditions for scarring. This is supported by good agreement between first-order perturbation theory and numerics, which capture scar dynamics despite chaotic spectra. Our results establish non-invertible dualities as both a generative mechanism and a diagnostic tool for quantum many- body scarring, offering a generalized symmetry-based route to weak ergodicity breaking.

The spin-orbital Kitaev model: from kagome spin ice to classical fractons

We study an exactly solvable spin-orbital model that can be regarded as a classical analogue of the celebrated Kitaev honeycomb model and describes interactions between Rydberg atoms on the ruby lattice. We leverage its local and nonlocal symmetries to determine the exact partition function and the static structure factor. A mapping between $S=3/2$ models on the honeycomb lattice and kagome spin Hamiltonians allows us to interpret the thermodynamic properties in terms of a classical kagome spin ice. Partially lifting the symmetries associated with line operators, we obtain a model characterized by immobile excitations, called classical fractons, and a ground state degeneracy that increases exponentially with the length of the system. We formulate a continuum theory that reveals the underlying gauge structure and conserved charges. Extensions of our theory to other lattices and higher-spin systems are suggested.

Majorana Fermi surface state in a network of quantum spin chains

We use junctions of critical spin-1 chains as the basic elements to construct a honeycomb network that harbors a gapless chiral spin liquid phase. The low-energy modes are described by spin-1 Majorana fermions that form a two-dimensional Fermi surface when the interactions at the junctions are tuned to the vicinity of chiral fixed points with staggered chirality. We discuss the physical properties and the stability of this chiral spin liquid phase against perturbations from the point of view of the effective field theory for the network. We find clear connections with the excitation spectrum obtained in parton constructions on the kagome lattice.
