Long-lived Left-Right signals at the FCC-ee

We give an extensive discussion of the displaced signals of heavy Majorana neutrino production at future electron-positron colliders operating at various proposed energies in the context of the Left-Right symmetric model. A comprehensive collection of channels is taken into account, ranging from those featuring $W$ and $W_R$ mediation to those induced by scalar mixing and gauge/scalar boson fusion, with connections to the mechanism of neutrino mass origin. The emerging signatures feature possibly multiple displaced heavy neutrinos that are in some cases accompanied by prompt activity and forward leptons. We derive the corresponding total production rates and differential distributions, which allow us to differentiate the channels and have analytical estimates of the signal yield. We then develop realistic estimates of the selection efficiencies using a dedicated vertexing algorithm which establishes the displaced decay positions and supplies a reliable proxy for reconstructing the full four-momenta of long-lived particles. This allows to determine the realistic reaches in the parameter space of the Left-Right symmetric model across the various channels, and we show that these can strongly surpass the LHC ones, demonstrating that future lepton colliders are sensitive to left-right symmetry breaking scales in the deep multi-TeV regime.

Beautiful Majorana Higgses at Colliders

We investigate a novel collider signature within the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model, featuring a Higgs sector composed of a bi-doublet and two triplets. Our study focuses on a region of the parameter space where the $SU(2)_R$ charged gauge boson $W_R$ lies in the multi-TeV regime (3-100 TeV) and the additional Higgs states play a significant role. In this scenario, a heavy neutral Higgs boson $Δ$ with a dominant $SU(2)_R$ triplet component can be produced in association with either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a massive weak boson. The subsequent decay of the heavy Higgs into Majorana neutrinos $N$ results in displaced lepton signatures, providing a striking manifestation of lepton number violation. Additionally, we explore how the production of $b$-jets in these processes can enhance hadron-collider sensitivity to such signals. A particularly compelling channel, $pp \to b \bar b NN$, offers the exciting possibility of simultaneously probing the spontaneous mass origin of both Dirac fermions and Majorana states. Based on an optimised event selection strategy and state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations, we outline the expected reach at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Our findings demonstrate that this channel probes a region of parameter space where the neutral Higgs triplet and heavy neutrino masses are relatively light ($m_Δ\lesssim 250$ GeV, $m_N \lesssim 80$ GeV), indirectly constraining the $W_R$ boson to the deep multi-TeV domain, with sensitivity extending up to 70-80 TeV, effectively turning the LHC into a precision machine.

Hadron Collider Signatures of Lepton Number Violation in the Type II Seesaw Model

We examine the prospect of observing genuine lepton number violating (LNV) signals at hadron colliders in the context of the Type II seesaw mechanism. The model features smoking gun signals involving same-sign di-leptons and jets that may be the primary observable channel in certain regions of the parameter space. The flavour composition of final-state charged leptons in the minimal model is related to the origin of neutrino masses and is correlated with other rare processes, such as neutrinoless double beta decay. We review existing collider limits and provide sensitivity estimates from LNV signals at upcoming runs of the LHC, for zero and non-zero mass splittings between the scalar triplet components.

Axion Window on New Macroscopic Forces

Axion-mediated forces are enhanced by the presence of CP-violating axion couplings, which are however tightly constrained by electric dipole moment (EDM) searches. We discuss the underlying hypotheses behind different sources of CP violation at high energies and the interplay between axion-mediated force experiments and EDM observables. Specifically, we identify various mechanisms, based on new sources of CP violation or Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking, that can significantly relax EDM constraints, leading to a substantial redefinition of the QCD axion window for axion-mediated forces. By considerably enlarging the QCD axion parameter space, our results provide a well-motivated target for experiments probing scalar axion couplings to matter fields. These include fifth-force tests of gravity, as well as searches for spin-dependent forces via precision magnetometry, proton storage rings and ultracold molecules.

Enabling Precise Predictions for Left-Right Symmetry at Colliders

We investigate the structure of the minimal Left-Right symmetric model that enables precise predictions in the gauge, scalar and neutrino sector. We revisit the complete set of mass spectra and mixings for the charged and neutral gauge bosons, would-be-Goldstones and gauge fixing, together with the ghost Lagrangian. In the scalar sector, we analytically re-derive all the massive states with mixings and devise a non-trivial physical input scheme, expressing the model couplings in terms of masses and mixing angles. Fermion couplings are also determined in closed form, including the Dirac mixing in the neutrino sector, evaluated explicitly using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. These analytic developments are implemented in a comprehensive FeynRules model file. We calculate the one loop QCD corrections and provide a complete UFO file for NLO studies, demonstrated on relevant hadron-collider benchmarks. We provide various restricted variants of the model file with different gauges, massless states, neutrino hierarchies and parity violating $g_L \neq g_R$ gauge couplings.

Superfluid dark stars

We present a superfluid dark star model consisting of relativistic dark bosons with two-body self-interaction. The obtained masses, radii, and tidal deformability depend in a simple way on the boson mass and interaction strength. We report first results on binary mergers: the distinctive amplitude and frequency of the emitted gravitational waves are well within reach of terrestrial interferometers.

The Quest for the Nature of the Dark Matter: The Need of a New Paradigm

The phenomenon of the Dark matter baffles the researchers: the underlying dark particle has escaped so far the detection and its astrophysical role appears complex and entangled with that of the standard luminous particles. We propose that, in order to act efficiently, alongside with abandoning the current $ΛCDM$ scenario, we need also to shift the Paradigm from which it emerged.

Left-Right Symmetry at FCC-hh

We study the production of right-handed $W_R$ bosons and heavy neutrinos $N$ at a future 100 TeV high energy hadron collider in the context of Left-Right symmetry, including the effects of $W_L-W_R$ gauge-boson mixing. We estimate the collider reach for up to 3/ab integrated luminosity using a multi-binned sensitivity measure. In the Keung-Senjanović and missing energy channels, the 3$σ$ sensitivity extends up to $M_{W_R}=35$ and 37 TeV, respectively. We further clarify the interplay between the missing energy channel and the (expected) limits from neutrinoless double beta decay searches, Big Bang nucleosynthesis and dark matter.

Parity from gauge symmetry

We argue that Left-Right parity symmetry $\mathcal{P}$ can arise as a discrete remnant of a unified gauge symmetry. The high-energy unification necessarily includes the gauging of the Lorentz symmetry, bringing into the game gravitational interactions, and leading to a gravi-GUT scheme. Parity emerges unbroken below the Planck scale, and can be broken spontaneously at lower energies making contact with the Standard Model. This framework motivates the spontaneous origin of parity violation as in Left-Right symmetric theories with $\mathcal{P}$. The possible unifying gauge groups are identified as SO(1,7) for gravitational and weak interactions, or SO(7,7) for a complete unification.

Axion-mediated forces, CP violation and left-right interactions

We compute the CP-violating (CPV) scalar axion coupling to nucleons in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory and we apply the results to the case of left-right symmetry. The correlated constraints with other CPV observables show that the predicted axion nucleon coupling is within the reach of present axion-mediated force experiments for $M_{W_R}$ up to $1000$ TeV.

Kaon CP violation and neutron EDM in the minimal left-right symmetric model

Within the minimal Left-Right (LR) symmetric model we revisit the predictions for the kaon CP violating observables $\varepsilon$ and $\varepsilon'$ in correlation with the neutron electric dipole moment. We perform a complete study of the cross constraints on the model parameters, phases and the $M_{W_R}$ scale, considering the two cases of extended parity or charge conjugation as LR discrete symmetries, together with the possible presence of a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. We discuss in particular two scenarios: whether the Standard Model saturates the experimental value of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ or whether new physics is needed, still an open issue after the recent lattice results on the QCD penguin matrix elements. Within the first scenario, we find no constraints on the LR scale in the charge-conjugation case while in the parity case we show that $M_{W_R}$ can be as low as 13 TeV. On the other side, the request that new physics contributes dominantly to $\varepsilon'$ implies strong correlations among the model parameters, with an upper bound of $M_{W_R}< 8-100$ TeV depending on $\tanβ$ in the case of charge conjugation and a range of $M_{W_R}\simeq 7-45$ TeV in the parity setup. Both scenarios may be probed directly at future colliders and only indirectly at the LHC.

Keung-Senjanović process at LHC: from LNV to displaced vertices to invisible decays

In the context of Left-Right symmetry, we revisit the Keung-Senjanović production of right-handed $W_R$ bosons and heavy neutrinos $N$ at high energy colliders. We develop a multi-binned sensitivity measure and use it to estimate the sensitivity for the entire range of $N$ masses, spanning the standard and merged prompt signals, displaced vertices and the invisible $N$ region. The estimated sensitivity of the LHC with 300/fb integrated luminosity ranges from 5 to beyond 7 TeV, while the future 33(100) TeV collider's reach with 3/ab extends to 12(26) TeV.

Phase space mass bound for fermionic dark matter from dwarf spheroidal galaxies

We reconsider the lower bound on the mass of a fermionic dark matter (DM) candidate resulting from the existence of known small Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies, in the hypothesis that their DM halo is constituted by degenerate fermions, with phase-space density limited by the Pauli exclusion principle. By relaxing the common assumption that the DM halo scale radius is tied to that of the luminous stellar component and by marginalizing on the unknown stellar velocity dispersion anisotropy, we prove that observations lead to rather weak constraints on the DM mass, that could be as low as tens of eV. In this scenario, however, the DM halos would be quite large and massive, so that a bound stems from the requirement that the time of orbital decay due to dynamical friction in the hosting Milky Way DM halo is longer than their lifetime. The smallest and nearest satellites Segue I and Willman I lead to a final lower bound of $m\gtrsim100$ eV, still weaker than previous estimates but robust and independent on the model of DM formation and decoupling. We thus show that phase space constraints do not rule out the possibility of sub-keV fermionic DM.

Majorana Higgses at colliders

Collider signals of heavy Majorana neutrino mass origin are studied in the minimal Left-Right symmetric model, where their mass is generated spontaneously together with the breaking of lepton number. The right-handed triplet Higgs boson $Δ$, responsible for such breaking, can be copiously produced at the LHC through the Higgs portal in the gluon fusion and less so in gauge mediated channels. At $Δ$ masses below the opening of the $VV$ decay channel, the two observable modes are pair-production of heavy neutrinos via the triplet gluon fusion $gg \to Δ\to NN$ and pair production of triplets from the Higgs $h \to ΔΔ\to 4N$ decay. The latter features tri- and quad same-sign lepton final states that break lepton number by four units and have no significant background. In both cases up to four displaced vertices may be present and their displacement may serve as a discriminating variable. The backgrounds at the LHC, including the jet fake rate, are estimated and the resulting sensitivity to the Left-Right breaking scale extends well beyond 10 TeV. In addition, sub-dominant radiative modes are surveyed: the $γγ$, $Z γ$ and lepton flavour violating ones. Finally, prospects for $Δ$ signals at future $e^+ e^-$ colliders are presented.

New physics in ε' from chromomagnetic contributions and limits on Left-Right symmetry

New physics in the chromomagnetic flavor changing transition s->dg* can avoid the strong GIM suppression of the Standard Model and lead to large contributions to CP-violating observables, in particular to the epsilon' parameter, that we address here. We discuss the case of the Left-Right symmetric models, where this contribution implies bounds on the phases of the right-handed quark mixing matrix, or in generic models with large phases a strong bound on the Left-Right symmetry scale. To the leading order, a numeric formula for epsilon' as a function of the short-distance coefficients for a wide class of models of new physics is given.

Perturbativity and mass scales of Left-Right Higgs bosons

The scalar sector of the minimal Left-Right model at TeV scale is revisited in light of the large quartic coupling needed for a heavy flavor-changing scalar. The stability and perturbativity of the effective potential is discussed and merged with constraints from low-energy processes. Thus the perturbative level of the Left-Right scale is sharpened. Lower limits on the triplet scalars are also derived: the left-handed triplet is bounded by oblique parameters, while the doubly-charged right-handed component is limited by the $h \to γγ, Z γ$ decays. Current constraints disfavor their detection as long as $W_R$ is within the reach of the LHC.

Lepton Number Violation in Higgs Decay at LHC

We show that within the Left-Right symmetric model, lepton number violating decays of the Higgs boson can be discovered at the LHC. The process is due to the mixing of the Higgs with the triplet that breaks parity. As a result, the Higgs can act as a gateway to the origin of heavy Majorana neutrino mass. To assess the LHC reach, a detailed collider study of the same-sign di-leptons plus jets channel is provided. This process is complementary to the existing nuclear and collider searches for lepton number violation and can probe the scale of parity restoration even beyond other direct searches.

Massive gravity: a General Analysis

Massive gravity can be described by adding to the Einstein-Hilbert action a function V of metric components. By using the Hamiltonian canonical analysis, we find the most general form of V such that five degrees of freedom propagate non perturbatively. The construction is based on a set of differential equations for $V$, that remarkably can be solved in terms of two arbitrary functions. Besides recovering the known "Lorentz invariant" massive gravity theory, we find an entirely new class of solutions, with healthy features on the phenomenological side, in particular they are weakly coupled in the solar system and have a high ultraviolet cutoff Lambda_2=(m M_pl)^(1/2), where m is the graviton mass scale.
