Mask-Induced Displacement in Audio XAI via Logit Trajectory Decomposition

Perturbation-based XAI methods for audio classifiers often estimate feature importance by masking spectrogram regions and crediting output changes to the retained signal. Yet they typically assume the fill (the mask replacement) is negligible. We propose logit-space trajectory decomposition to examine this assumption. An on-axis component captures output along a line connecting the fully filled (occluded) spectrogram to the fully retained original; an off-axis component captures perpendicular displacement. We evaluate across three fills, three audio classifiers, and 1,100 AudioSet clips. We demonstrate that no fill is acoustically neutral under full occlusion: Zero fill activates silence and Gaussian Noise fill activates broadband noise. Under partial masking, 41-77% of output displacement is off-axis, with the direction of the residual stable across mask retention fraction and specific to each model-fill combination. Attribution methods are unevenly exposed to off-axis displacement through their sampling and weighting strategies, revealing apparatus-dependence. Where the off-axis residual is stable and low-dimensional, its structure affords mitigation.

EMORSION: Examining the Impact of Audio Parameters on Emotional Responses and Immersion in Film

EMORSION is an exploratory proof-of-concept study examining how film audio design shapes audience emotion and immersion in acinema setting. Four film scenes were selected across the horror (2) and drama (2) genres, balanced between mainstream and independent productions. For each scene, multiple alternative audio mixes were created by systematically manipulating three core aspects of audio design, frequency (pitch), dynamics (loudness), and directionality (spatial placement). Three audience groups viewed the scenes, with each group exposed to one manipulated mix alongside a control mix for each scene. Audience responses were assessed through a triangulated multimodal framework combining self-reported emotion and immersion via a questionnaire, physiological measures including heart rate monitoring, and video-based motion tracking. The protocol successfully captured measurable, interpretable differences across audio conditions, indicating that even subtle changes in audio design can shape emotional perception and immersion. Unconventional mixes tended to produce greater variability in audience interpretation, while conventional immersive mixes were associated with stronger cross-audience agreement. These findings establish the feasibility of the EMORSION protocol and motivate larger-scale studies to characterise the role of specific audio parameters in shaping audience experience.

Comparing Decision Support Approaches for Cyber Security Investment

When investing in cyber security resources, information security managers have to follow effective decision-making strategies. We refer to this as the cyber security investment challenge. In this paper, we consider three possible decision-support methodologies for security managers to tackle this challenge. We consider methods based on game theory, combinatorial optimisation and a hybrid of the two. Our modelling starts by building a framework where we can investigate the effectiveness of a cyber security control regarding the protection of different assets seen as targets in presence of commodity threats. In terms of game theory we consider a 2-person control game between the security manager who has to choose among different implementation levels of a cyber security control, and a commodity attacker who chooses among different targets to attack. The pure game theoretical methodology consists of a large game including all controls and all threats. In the hybrid methodology the game solutions of individual control-games along with their direct costs (e.g. financial) are combined with a knapsack algorithm to derive an optimal investment strategy. The combinatorial optimisation technique consists of a multi-objective multiple choice knapsack based strategy. We compare these approaches on a case study that was built on SANS top critical controls. The main achievements of this work is to highlight the weaknesses and strengths of different investment methodologies for cyber security, the benefit of their interaction, and the impact that indirect costs have on cyber security investment.

A Generalization of Deutsch's Example

Quantum parallelism is the main feature of quantum computation. In 1985 D. Deutsch showed that a single quantum computation may be sufficient to state whether a two-valued function of a two-valued variable is constant or not. Though the generalized problem with unconstrained domain and range size admits no deterministic quantum solution, a fully probabilistic quantum algorithm is presented in which quantum parallelism is harnessed to achieve a quicker exploration of the domain with respect to the classical ``sampling'' strategy.
