Some algebraic consequences of Green's hyperplane restriction theorems

We discuss a paper of M. Green from a new algebraic perspective, and provide applications of its results to level and Gorenstein algebras, concerning their Hilbert functions and the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we will determine a new infinite class of symmetric $h$-vectors that cannot be Gorenstein $h$-vectors, which was left open in a recent work of Migliore-Nagel-Zanello. This includes the smallest example previously unknown, $h=(1,10,9,10,1)$. As M. Green's results depend heavily on the characteristic of the base field, so will ours. The appendix will contain a new argument, kindly provided to us by M. Green, for Theorems 3 and 4 of his paper, since we had found a gap in the original proof of those results during the preparation of this manuscript.

Simplicial complexes and Macaulay's inverse systems

Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $V = \{x_1,...,x_n\}$, with Stanley-Reisner ideal $I_Δ\subseteq R = k[x_1,...,x_n]$. The goal of this paper is to investigate the class of artinian algebras $A=A(Δ,a_1,...,a_n)= R/(I_Δ,x_1^{a_1},...,x_n^{a_n})$, where each $a_i \geq 2$. By utilizing the technique of Macaulay's inverse systems, we can explicitly describe the socle of $A$ in terms of $Δ$. As a consequence, we determine the simplicial complexes, that we will call {\em levelable}, for which there exists a tuple $(a_1,...,a_n)$ such that $A(Δ,a_1,...,a_n)$ is a level algebra.

Bounds and asymptotic minimal growth for Gorenstein Hilbert functions

We determine new bounds on the entries of Gorenstein Hilbert functions, both in any fixed codimension and asymptotically. Our first main theorem is a lower bound for the degree $i+1$ entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector, in terms of its entry in degree $i$. This result carries interesting applications concerning unimodality: indeed, an important consequence is that, given $r$ and $i$, all Gorenstein $h$-vectors of codimension $r$ and socle degree $e\geq e_0=e_0(r,i)$ (this function being explicitly computed) are unimodal up to degree $i+1$. This immediately gives a new proof of a theorem of Stanley that all Gorenstein $h$-vectors in codimension three are unimodal. Our second main theorem is an asymptotic formula for the least value that the $i$-th entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector may assume, in terms of codimension, $r$, and socle degree, $e$. This theorem broadly generalizes a recent result of ours, where we proved a conjecture of Stanley predicting that asymptotic value in the specific case $e=4$ and $i=2$, as well as a result of Kleinschmidt which concerned the logarithmic asymptotic behavior in degree $i= \lfloor \frac{e}{2} \rfloor $.

Forcing the Strong Lefschetz and the Maximal Rank Properties

Three basic properties that standard graded artinian $k$-algebras may or may not enjoy are the Weak and Strong Lefschetz Properties and the Maximal Rank Property (respectively WLP, SLP, and MRP). In this paper we will assume that the base field $k$ has characteristic zero. It is known that SLP implies MRP, which in turn implies WLP, but that both implications are strict. However, it surprisingly turned out that the set of Hilbert functions admitting any algebras with WLP coincides with the corresponding set for SLP (and therefore with that for MRP). J. Migliore and the first author, using Green's theorem and a result of Wiebe, characterized the Hilbert functions forcing all algebras to enjoy WLP. The purpose of this note is to prove the corresponding characterizations for both SLP and MRP. Unsurprisingly (or surprisingly??), the two characterizations coincide, but they define a class of Hilbert functions strictly smaller than that determined for WLP. Our methods include the Herzog-Popescu theorem on quotients of $k$-algebras modulo a general form, a result of Wiebe, and gins and stable ideals. At the end, we will also discuss the importance of assuming that the characteristic be zero, and we will exhibit a class of codimension 2 monomial complete intersections for which SLP (but not MRP) fails in positive characteristic.

The strength of the Weak Lefschetz Property

We study a number of conditions on the Hilbert function of a level artinian algebra which imply the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Possibly the most important open case is whether a codimension 3 SI-sequence forces the WLP for level algebras. In other words, does every codimension 3 Gorenstein algebra have the WLP? We give some new partial answers to this old question: we prove an affirmative answer when the initial degree is 2, or when the Hilbert function is relatively small. Then we give a complete answer to the question of what is the largest socle degree forcing the WLP.

On the degree two entry of a Gorenstein $h$-vector and a conjecture of Stanley

In this note we establish a (non-trivial) lower bound on the degree two entry $h_2$ of a Gorenstein $h$-vector of any given socle degree $e$ and any codimension $r$. In particular, when $e=4$, that is for Gorenstein $h$-vectors of the form $h=(1,r,h_2,r,1)$, our lower bound allows us to prove a conjecture of Stanley on the order of magnitude of the minimum value, say $f(r)$, that $h_2$ may assume. In fact, we show that $$\lim_{r\to \infty} {f(r)\over r^{2/3}}= 6^{2/3}.$$ In general, we wonder whether our lower bound is sharp for all integers $e\geq 4$ and $r\geq 2$.

Interval Conjectures for level Hilbert functions

We conjecture that the set of all Hilbert functions of (artinian) level algebras enjoys a very natural form of regularity, which we call the {\em Interval Conjecture} (IC): If, for some positive integer $α$, $(1,h_1,...,h_i,...,h_e)$ and $(1,h_1,...,h_i+α,...,h_e)$ are both level $h$-vectors, then $(1,h_1,...,h_i+β,...,h_e)$ is also level for each integer $β=0,1,..., α.$ In the Gorenstein case, i.e. when $h_e=1$, we also supply the {\em Gorenstein Interval Conjecture} (GIC), which naturally generalizes the IC, and basically states that the same property simultaneously holds for any two symmetric entries, say $h_i$ and $h_{e-i}$, of a Gorenstein $h$-vector. These conjectures are inspired by the research performed in this area over the last few years. A series of recent results seems to indicate that it will be nearly impossible to characterize explicitly the sets of all Gorenstein or of all level Hilbert functions. Therefore, our conjectures would at least provide the existence of a very strong - and natural - form of order in the structure of such important and complicated sets. We are still far from proving the conjectures at this point. However, we will already solve a few interesting cases, especially when it comes to the IC, in this paper. Among them, that of Gorenstein $h$-vectors of socle degree 4, that of level $h$-vectors of socle degree 2, and that of non-unimodal level $h$-vectors of socle degree 3 and any given codimension.

A characterization of Gorenstein Hilbert functions in codimension four with small initial degree

The main goal of this paper is to characterize the Hilbert functions of all (artinian) codimension 4 Gorenstein algebras that have at least two independent relations of degree four. This includes all codimension 4 Gorenstein algebras whose initial relation is of degree at most 3. Our result shows that those Hilbert functions are exactly the so-called {\em SI-sequences} starting with (1,4,h_2,h_3,...), where $h_4 \leq 33$. In particular, these Hilbert functions are all unimodal. We also establish a more general unimodality result, which relies on the values of the Hilbert function not being too big, but is independent of the initial degree.

An improved Multiplicity Conjecture for codimension three Gorenstein algebras

The Multiplicity Conjecture is a deep problem relating the multiplicity (or degree) of a Cohen-Macaulay standard graded algebra with certain extremal graded Betti numbers in its minimal free resolution. In the case of level algebras of codimension three, Zanello has proposed a stronger conjecture. We prove this conjecture for the case of codimension three graded Gorenstein algebras.

The Hilbert functions which force the Weak Lefschetz Property

The purpose of this note is to characterize the finite Hilbert functions which force all of their artinian algebras to enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Curiously, they turn out to be exactly those (characterized by Wiebe in $[Wi]$) whose Gotzmann ideals have the WLP. This implies that, if a Gotzmann ideal has the WLP, then all algebras with the same Hilbert function (and hence lower Betti numbers) have the WLP as well. However, we will answer in the negative, even in the case of level algebras, the most natural question that one might ask after reading the previous sentence: If $A$ is an artinian algebra enjoying the WLP, do all artinian algebras with the same Hilbert function as $A$ and Betti numbers lower than those of $A$ have the WLP as well? Also, as a consequence of our result, we have another (simpler) proof of the fact that all codimension 2 algebras enjoy the WLP (this fact was first proven in $[HMNW]$, where it was shown that even the Strong Lefschetz Property holds).

A non-unimodal codimension 3 level $h$-vector

$(1,3,6,10,15,21,28,27,27,28)$ is a level $h$-vector! This example answers negatively the open question as to whether all codimension 3 level $h$-vectors are unimodal. Moreover, using the same (simple) technique, we are able to construct level algebras of codimension 3 whose $h$-vectors have exactly $N$ ` ` maxima", for any positive integer $N$. These non-unimodal $h$-vectors, in particular, provide examples of codimension 3 level algebras not enjoying the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Their existence was also an open problem before. In the second part of the paper we further investigate this fundamental property, and show that there even exist codimension 3 level algebras of type 3 without the WLP.

Level algebras with bad properties

This paper can be seen as a continuation of the works contained in the recent preprints [Za], of the second author, and [Mi], of Juan Migliore. Our results are: 1). There exist codimension three artinian level algebras of type two which do not enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). In fact, for $e\gg 0$, we will construct a codimension three, type two $h$-vector of socle degree $e$ such that {\em all} the level algebras with that $h$-vector do not have the WLP. We will also describe the family of those algebras and compute its dimension, for each $e\gg 0$. 2). There exist reduced level sets of points in ${\mathbf P}^3$ of type two whose artinian reductions all fail to have the WLP. Indeed, the examples constructed here have the same $h$-vectors we mentioned in 1). 3). For any integer $r\geq 3$, there exist non-unimodal monomial artinian level algebras of codimension $r$. As an immediate consequence of this result, we obtain another proof of the fact (first shown by Migliore in [Mi], Theorem 4.3) that, for any $r\geq 3$, there exist reduced level sets of points in ${\mathbf P}^r$ whose artinian reductions are non-unimodal.

Improving the bounds of the Multiplicity Conjecture: the codimension 3 level case

The Multiplicity Conjecture (MC) of Huneke and Srinivasan provides upper and lower bounds for the multiplicity of a Cohen-Macaulay algebra $A$ in terms of the shifts appearing in the modules of the minimal free resolution (MFR) of $A$. All the examples studied so far have lead to conjecture (see $[HZ]$ and $[MNR2]$) that, moreover, the bounds of the MC are sharp if and only if $A$ has a pure MFR. Therefore, it seems a reasonable - and useful - idea to seek better, if possibly {\it ad hoc}, bounds for particular classes of Cohen-Macaulay algebras. In this work we will only consider the codimension 3 case. In the first part we will stick to the bounds of the MC, and show that they hold for those algebras whose $h$-vector is that of a compressed algebra. In the second part, we will (mainly) focus on the level case: we will construct new conjectural upper and lower bounds for the multiplicity of a codimension 3 level algebra $A$, which can be expressed exclusively in terms of the $h$-vector of $A$, and which are better than (or equal to) those provided by the MC. Also, our bounds can be sharp even when the MFR of $A$ is not pure. Even though proving our bounds still appears too difficult a task in general, we are already able to show them for some interesting classes of codimension 3 level algebras $A$: namely, when $A$ is compressed, or when its $h$-vector $h(A)$ ends with $(...,3,2)$. Also, we will prove our lower bound when $h(A)$ begins with $(1,3,h_2,...)$, where $h_2\leq 4$, and our upper bound when $h(A)$ ends with $(...,h_{c-1},h_c)$, where $h_{c-1}\leq h_c+1$.

The $h$-vector of a relatively compressed level algebra

The purpose of this note is to supply an upper and a lower bound (which are in general sharp) for the $h$-vector of a level algebra which is relatively compressed with respect to any arbitrary level algebra $A$. The useful concept of relatively compressed algebra was recently introduced in $[MMN]$ by Migliore {\it et al.} (whose investigations mainly focused on the particular case of $A$ a complete intersection). The key idea of this note is the simple observation that the level algebras which are relatively compressed with respect to $A$ coincide (after an obvious isomorphism) with the generic level quotients of suitable truncations of $A$. Therefore, we are able to apply to relatively compressed algebras the main result of our recent work $[Za3]$.

Level algebras of type 2

In this paper we study standard graded artinian level algebras, in particular those whose socle-vector has type 2. Our main results are: the characterization of the level $h$-vectors of the form $(1,r,...,r,2)$ for $r\leq 4$; the characterization of the minimal free resolutions associated to each of the $h$-vectors above when $r=3$; a sharp upper-bound (under certain mild hypotheses) for the level $h$-vectors $(1,r,...,a,2)$ of arbitrary codimension $r$ and type 2, which depends on the next to last entry $a$.

When is there a unique socle-vector associated to a given $h$-vector?

First, we construct a bijection between the set of $h$-vectors and the set of socle-vectors of artinian algebras. As a corollary, we find the minimum codimension that an artinian algebra with a given socle-vector can have. Then, we study the main problem in the paper: determining when there is a unique socle-vector for a given $h$-vector. We solve the problem completely if the codimension is at most 3.

Partial derivatives of a generic subspace of a vector space of forms: quotients of level algebras of arbitrary type

Given a vector space $V$ of homogeneous polynomials of the same degree over an infinite field, consider a generic subspace $W$ of $V$. The main result of this paper is a lower-bound (in general sharp) for the dimensions of the spaces spanned in each degree by the partial derivatives of the forms generating $W$, in terms of the dimensions of the spaces spanned by the partial derivatives of the forms generating the original space $V$. Rephrasing our result in the language of commutative algebra (where this result finds its most important applications), we have: let $A$ be a type $t$ artinian level algebra with $h$-vector $h=(1,h_1,h_2,...,h_e)$, and let, for $c=1,2,...,t-1$, $H^{c,gen}=(1,H_1^{c,gen},H_2^{c,gen},...,H_e^{c,gen})$ be the $h$-vector of the generic type $c$ level quotient of $A$ having the same socle degree $e$. Then we supply a lower-bound (in general sharp) for the $h$-vector $H^{c,gen}$. Explicitly, we will show that, for any $u\in \lbrace 1,...,e\rbrace $, $$H_u^{c,gen}\geq {1\over t^2-1}((t-c)h_{e-u}+(ct-1)h_u).$$ This result generalizes a recent theorem of Iarrobino (which treats the case $t=2$). Finally, we begin to obtain, as a consequence, some structure theorems for level $h$-vectors of type bigger than 2, which is, at this time, a very little explored topic.

Stanley's theorem on codimension 3 Gorenstein $h$-vectors

In this note we supply an elementary proof of the following well-known theorem of R. Stanley: the $h$-vectors of Gorenstein algebras of codimension 3 are SI-sequences, i.e. are symmetric and the first difference of their first half is an $O$-sequence.
