Dynamic charge correlations near the Peierls transition

The quantum phase transition between a repulsive Luttinger liquid and an insulating Peierls state is studied in the framework of the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model. We focus on the adiabatic regime but include the full quantum dynamics of the phonons. Using continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we track in particular the dynamic charge structure factor and the single-particle spectrum across the transition. With increasing electron-phonon coupling, the dynamic charge structure factor reveals the emergence of a charge gap, and a clear signature of phonon softening at the zone boundary. The single-particle spectral function evolves continuously across the transition. Hybridization of the charge and phonon modes of the Luttinger liquid description leads to two modes, one of which corresponds to the coherent polaron band. This band acquires a gap upon entering the Peierls phase, whereas the other mode constitutes the incoherent, high-energy spectrum with backfolded shadow bands. Coherent polaronic motion is a direct consequence of quantum lattice fluctuations. In the strong-coupling regime, the spectrum is described by the static, mean-field limit. Importantly, whereas finite electron density in general leads to screening of polaron effects, the latter reappear at half filling due to charge ordering and lattice dimerization.

Melting of stripe phases and its signature in the single-particle spectral function

Motivated by the recent experimental data [Phys. Rev. B 79, 100502 (2009)] indicating the existence of a pure stripe charge order over unprecedently wide temperature range in La_{1.8-x}Eu_{0.2}Sr_xCuO_4, we investigate the temperature-induced melting of the metallic stripe phase. In spite of taking into account local dynamic correlations within a real-space dynamical mean-field theory of the Hubbard model, we observe a mean-field like melting of the stripe order irrespective of the choice of the next-nearest neighbor hopping. The temperature dependence of the single-particle spectral function shows the stripe induced formation of a flat band around the antinodal points accompanied by the opening a gap in the nodal direction.

A weak coupling CTQMC study of the single impurity and periodic Anderson models with s-wave superconducting baths

We apply the unbiased weak-coupling continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) method to review the physics of a single magnetic impurity coupled to s-wave superconducting leads described by the BCS reduced Hamiltonian. As a function of the superconducting gap $Δ$, we study the signature of the first order transition between the singlet and doublet (local moment) states on various quantities. In particular we concentrate on the Josephson current with 0 to $π$ phase shift, the crossing of the Andreev bound states in the single particle spectral function, as well as the local dynamical spin structure factor. Within DMFT, this impurity problem provides a link to the periodic Anderson model with superconducting conduction electrons (BCS-PAM). The first order transition observed in the impurity model is reproduced in the BCS-PAM and is signalized by the crossing of the low energy excitations in the local density of states. The momentum resolved single particle spectral function in the singlet state reveals the coherent, Bloch-like, superposition of Andreev bound states. In the doublet or local moment phase the single particle spectral function is characterized by incoherent quasiparticle excitations.

Single hole dynamics in the t-J model on two- and three-leg ladders

The dynamics of a single hole in the t-J model on two- (2LL) and three- (3LL) leg ladders is studied using a recently developed quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. For the 2LL it is shown that in addition to the most pronounced features of the spectral function, well described by the limit of strong coupling along the rungs, a clear shadow band appears in the antibonding channel. Moreover, both the bonding band and its shadow have a finite quasiparticle (QP) weight in the thermodynamic limit. For strong coupling along the rungs of the 3LL, the low-energy spectrum in the antisymmetric channel is similar to a one-dimensional chain, whereas in the two symmetric channels it resembles the 2LL. The QP weight vanishes in the antisymmetric channel, but is finite in the symmetric one.

t-U-W Model of a d_{x^2-y^2} Superconductor in the Proximity of an AF Mott Insulator: Diagrammatic Studies vs. QMC Simulations

We examine the competition and relationship between an antiferromagnetic (AF) Mott insulating state and a d_{x^2-y^2} superconducting (SC) state in two dimensions using semi-analytical, i. e. diagrammatic calculations of the t-U-W model. The AF Mott insulator is described by the ground state of the half-filled Hubbard model on a square lattice with on-site Coulomb repulsion U and nearest neighbor single-particle hopping t. To this model, an extra term W is added, which depends upon the square of the single-particle nearest-neighbor hopping. Staying at half-band filling and a constant value of U, it was previously shown with Quantum-Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations that one can generate a quantum transition as a function of the coupling strength, W, between an AF Mott insulating state and a d_{x^2-y^2} SC state. Here we complement these earlier QMC simulations with physically more transparent diagrammatic calculations. We start with a standard Hartree-Fock (HF) calculation to capture the "high-energy" physics of the t-U-W model. Then, we derive and solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation, i. e. we account for fluctuation effects within the time-dependent HF or generalized RPA scheme. Spin- and charge-susceptibility as well as the effective interaction vertex are calculated and systematically compared with QMC data. Finally, the corresponding BCS gap equation obtained for this effective interaction is solved.

Single hole dynamics in the t-J model on a square lattice

We present quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations for a single hole in a t-J model from J=0.4t to J=4t on square lattices with up to 24 x 24 sites. The lower edge of the spectrum is directly extracted from the imaginary time Green's function. In agreement with earlier calculations, we find flat bands around $(0,\pmπ)$, $(\pmπ,0)$ and the minimum of the dispersion at $(\pmπ/2,\pmπ/2)$. For small J both self-consistent Born approximation and series expansions give a bandwidth for the lower edge of the spectrum in agreement with the simulations, whereas for J/t > 1, only series expansions agree quantitatively with our QMC results. This band corresponds to a coherent quasiparticle. This is shown by a finite size scaling of the quasiparticle weight $Z(\vec k)$ that leads to a finite result in the thermodynamic limit for the considered values of $J/t$. The spectral function $A(\vec k, ω)$ is obtained from the imaginary time Green's function via the maximum entropy method. Resonances above the lowest edge of the spectrum are identified, whose J-dependence is quantitatively described by string excitations up to J/t=2.

Single hole dynamics in the one dimensional t-J model

We present a new finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to compute imaginary-time Green functions for a single hole in the t-J model on non-frustrated lattices. Spectral functions are then obtained with the Maximum Entropy method. Simulations of the one-dimensional case show that a simple charge-spin separation Ansatz is able to describe the overall features of the spectral function over the whole energy range for values of J/t from 1/3 to 4. This includes the bandwidth W \sim 4t + J and the compact support of the spectral function. The quasiparticle weight Z_k is computed on lattices up to L=96 sites, and scales as Z_k\propto L^{-1/2}.

Metal-Insulator and Superconductor-Insulator Transitions in Correlated Electron Systems

Quantum transitions between the Mott insulator and metals by controlling filling in two-dimensional square lattice are characterized by a large dynamical exponent $z=4$ where the origin of unusual metallic properties near the Mott insulator are ascribed to the proximity of the transition. The scaling near the transition indicates the formation of flat dispersion area due to singular momentum dependence of the single-particle renormalization. The flat dispersion controls critical properties of the Mott transition. An instability of the flat dispersion to the d-wave superconducting order is discussed. We also discuss a case of the Mott transition for a model of Mn perovskite compounds with orbital degeneracy where orbital correlation length shows critical divergence toward the metal-insulator transition.

Critical Exponents of the Metal-Insulator Transition in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model

We study the filling-controlled metal-insulator transition in the two-dimensional Hubbard model near half-filling with the use of zero temperature quantum Monte Carlo methods. In the metallic phase, the compressibility behaves as $κ\propto |μ- μ_c|^{-0.58\pm0.08}$ where $μ_c$ is the critical chemical potential. In the insulating phase, the localization length follows $ξ_l \propto |μ- μ_c|^{-ν_l}$ with $ν_l = 0.26 \pm 0.05$. Under the assumption of hyperscaling, the compressibility data leads to a correlation length exponent $ν_κ= 0.21 \pm 0.04$. Our results show that the exponents $ν_κ$ and $ν_l$ agree within statistical uncertainty. This confirms the assumption of hyperscaling with correlation length exponent $ν= 1/4$ and dynamical exponent $z = 4$. In contrast the metal-insulator transition in the generic band insulators in all dimensions as well as in the one-dimensional Hubbard model satisfy the hyperscaling assumption with exponents $ν= 1/2$ and $z = 2$.
