Multipole nonlinearity of metamaterials

We report on the linear and nonlinear optical response of metamaterials evoked by first and second order multipoles. The analytical ground on which our approach bases permits for new insights into the functionality of metamaterials. For the sake of clarity we focus here on a key geometry, namely the split-ring resonator, although the introduced formalism can be applied to arbitrary structures. We derive the equations that describe linear and nonlinear light propagation where special emphasis is put on second harmonic generation. This contribution basically aims at stretching versatile and existing concepts to describe light propagation in nonlinear media towards the realm of metamaterials.

Analogue of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Terahertz Metamaterial

We experimentally demonstrate at terahertz frequencies that a planar metamaterial exhibits a spectral response resembling electromagnetically induced transparency. The metamaterial unit cell consists of a split ring surrounded by another closed ring where their dimensions are such that their excitable lowest order modes have identical resonance frequencies but very different life times. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy verifies that the interference of these two resonances results in a narrow transparency window located within a broad opaque region. In contrast to previous studies this enhanced transmission is achieved by independently exciting two resonances in which their coupling to the radiation field, and thus their linewidth, differs strongly. Rigorous numerical simulations prove that the transparency window is associated with a large group index and low losses, making the design potentially useful for slow light applications. This experiment opens an avenue to explore quantum mechanical phenomena using localized resonances in metallic structures,

Discrete Family of Dissipative Soliton Pairs in Mode-Locked Fiber Lasers

We numerically investigate the formation of soliton pairs (bound states) in mode-locked fiber ring lasers. In the distributed model (complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation) we observe a discrete family of soliton pairs with equidistantly increasing peak separation. This family was identified by two alternative numerical schemes and the bound state instability was disclosed by a linear stability analysis. Moreover, similar families of unstable bound state solutions have been found in a more realistic lumped laser model with an idealized saturable absorber (instantaneous response). We show that a stabilization of these bound states can be achieved when the finite relaxation time of the saturable absorber is taken into account. The domain of stability can be controlled by varying this relaxation time.

Coupling between a dark and a bright eigenmode in a terahertz metamaterial

Terahertz time domain spectroscopy and rigorous simulations are used to probe the coupling between a dark and a bright plasmonic eigenmode in a metamaterial with broken symmetry. The metamaterial consists of two closely spaced split ring resonators that have their gaps in non-identical positions within the ring. For normal incidence and a fixed polarization both lowest order eigenmodes of the split ring resonators can be excited; although one of them has to be regarded as dark since coupling is prohibited because of symmetry constraints. Emphasis in this work is put on a systematic evaluation of the coupling effects depending on a spectral tuning of both resonances.

Suppression of light propagation in a medium made of randomly arranged dielectric spheres

Light propagation in a medium made of densely packed dielectric spheres is investigated by using a rigorous diffraction theory. It is shown that a substantial suppression of the local density of states occurs in spectral domains where the single constituents exhibit Mie resonances. The local density of states decreases exponentially at the pertinent frequencies with a linearly increasing spatial extension of the aggregated spheres. It is shown that a self-sustaining random arrangement of core-shell spheres shows the same fundamental characteristics. Such approach offers a path towards easy to fabricate photonic materials with omnidirectional gaps that may find use in various applications.

Three-dimensional chiral meta-atoms

We show that the chirality of artificial media, made of a planar periodic arrangement of three-dimensional metallic meta-atoms, can be tailored. The meta-atoms support localized plasmon polaritons and exhibit a chirality exceeding that of pseudo-planar chiral metamaterials by an order of magnitude. Two design approaches are investigated in detail. The first is the referential example for a chiral structure, namely a Moebius strip. The second example is a cut wire - split-ring resonator geometry that can be manufactured with state-of-the-art nanofabrication technologies. Driven into resonance these meta-atoms evoke a polarization rotation of $30^\circ$ per unit cell.

Vortex stability in nearly two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with attraction

We perform accurate investigation of stability of localized vortices in an effectively two-dimensional ("pancake-shaped") trapped BEC with negative scattering length. The analysis combines computation of the stability eigenvalues and direct simulations. The states with vorticity S=1 are stable in a third of their existence region, $0 $ $\allowbreak 0.43N_{\max}^{(S=1)}$, the fragments do not recombine, as each one collapses by itself. The results are compared with those in the full 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In a moderately anisotropic 3D configuration, with the aspect ratio $\sqrt{10}$, the stability interval of the S=1 vortices occupies $\approx 40%$ of their existence region, hence the 2D limit provides for a reasonable approximation in this case. For the isotropic 3D configuration, the stability interval expands to 65% of the existence domain. Overall, the vorticity heightens the actual collapse threshold by a factor of up to 2. All vortices with $S\geq 2$ are unstable.

Photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional optical lattices

We report on the first experimental observation of photonic Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling in two-dimensional periodic systems. We study the propagation of an optical beam in a square photonic lattice superimposed on a refractive index ramp, and demonstrate the tunneling of light from the first to the higher-order transmission bands of the lattice bandgap spectrum, associated with the spectral dynamics inside the first Brillouin zone and corresponding oscillations of the primary beam.
