Before You Scroll Again: Predicting Regretful Social Media Sessions from In-the-Wild Contextual and Wearable Sensing

Users often feel regret after using social media, making regret a more ecologically valid target than screen time for understanding when phone use becomes problematic. Existing self-monitoring tools cannot anticipate regret before it occurs, and prior physiological work on social media use has been confined to the lab with research-grade sensors and curated content, leaving the question of in-the-wild prediction open. We deployed a 7-day in-the-wild experience sampling study with 21 participants, combining passive smartphone logging, a low-cost consumer smartwatch (Bangle.js 2, \$80), session-level surveys (1,445 sessions), and exit interviews to investigate when and why social media sessions become regretful, and whether regret can be anticipated before a session begins. Three findings stand out: (i) the gap between intended and actual use predicts regret far more strongly than session duration, with duration's apparent effect collapsing once intention is modeled; (ii) regret is amplified when sessions displace a valued alternative, particularly at night and following productivity-app use; and (iii) pre-session contextual features generalize across participants while physiological signals add person-specific lift, pointing toward a two-layer architecture for just-in-time adaptive interventions. Interview themes of scrolling-as-avoidance and time blindness contextualize these patterns and surface design opportunities beyond timer-based interventions.

Designing a Collaborative Platform for Advancing Supply Chain Transparency

Enabling supply chain transparency (SCT) is essential for regulatory compliance and meeting sustainability standards. Multi-tier SCT plays a pivotal role in identifying and mitigating an organization's operational, environmental, and social (ESG) risks. While research observes increasing efforts towards SCT, a minority of companies are currently publishing supply chain information. Using the Design Science Research approach, we develop a collaborative platform for supply chain transparency. We derive design requirements, formulate design principles, and evaluate the artefact with industry experts. Our artefact is initialized with publicly available supply chain data through an automated pipeline designed to onboard future participants to our platform. This work contributes to SCT research by providing insights into the challenges and opportunities of implementing multi-tier SCT and offers a practical solution that encourages organizations to participate in a transparent ecosystem.

A Sociotechnical Framework For Addressing Stigma and Designing Personalized Digital Health Products

Stigma, a recognized global barrier to effective disease management, impacts social interactions, resource access, and psychological well-being. In this study, we developed a patient-centered framework for deriving design requirements and interventions for health conditions subject to social stigma. This study introduces a patient-centered framework, grounded in sociotechnical systems theory, to create tailored interventions and design requirements for health conditions influenced by social stigma. We tested this framework through a mixed-method study on chronic pelvic pain patients. Our approach led to the identification of ten design requirements that encompass behavioral and psychological support and strategies for day-to-day living. The findings reveal a preference among CPP patients for priming and social support interventions. This study underscores the value of a systems-based perspective in healthcare, advocating for a nuanced, patient-centered approach that addresses the complex nature of health conditions affected by social stigma. It contributes to the ongoing discourse on integrating STS theory into healthcare frameworks, highlighting the need for targeted strategies to combat the complexities of stigma in patient care.

Understanding emotions in the context of IT-based self-monitoring

This study explores the intersection of information technology-based self-monitoring (ITSM) and emotional responses in chronic care. It critiques the lack of theoretical depth in current ITSM research and proposes a dynamic emotion process theory to understand ITSM's impact on users' emotions. Utilizing computational grounded theory and machine learning analysis of hypertension app reviews, the research seeks to extend emotion theory by examining ITSM stimuli and their influence on emotional episodes, moving beyond discrete emotion models towards a continuous, nuanced understanding of emotional responses.

On Integrating Design Thinking for a Human-centered Requirements Engineering

In this position paper, we elaborate on the possibilities and needs to integrate Design Thinking into Requirements Engineering. We draw from our research and project experiences to compare what is understood as Design Thinking and Requirements Engineering considering their involved artifacts. We suggest three approaches for tailoring and integrating Design Thinking and Requirements Engineering with complementary synergies and point at open challenges for research and practice.
