Joint Beamforming Design for Dual-Functional MIMO Radar and Communication Systems Guaranteeing Physical Layer Security

The dual-functional radar and communication (DFRC) technique constitutes a promising next-generation wireless solution, due to its benefits in terms of power consumption, physical hardware, and spectrum exploitation. In this paper, we propose sophisticated beamforming designs for multi-user DFRC systems by additionally taking the physical layer security (PLS) into account. We show that appropriately designed radar waveforms can also act as the traditional artificial noise conceived for drowning out the eavesdropping channel and for attaining increased design degrees of freedom (DoF). The joint beamforming design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem for striking a compelling trade-off amongst the conflicting design objectives of radar transmit beampattern, communication quality of service (QoS), and the PLS level. Then, we propose a semidefinite relaxation (SDR)-based algorithm and a reduced-complexity version to tackle the non-convexity, where the globally optimal solutions are found. Moreover, a robust beamforming method is also developed for considering realistic imperfect channel state information (CSI) knowledge. Finally, simulation results are provided for corroborating our theoretical results and show the proposed methods' superiority.

Multi-queue Momentum Contrast for Microvideo-Product Retrieval

The booming development and huge market of micro-videos bring new e-commerce channels for merchants. Currently, more micro-video publishers prefer to embed relevant ads into their micro-videos, which not only provides them with business income but helps the audiences to discover their interesting products. However, due to the micro-video recording by unprofessional equipment, involving various topics and including multiple modalities, it is challenging to locate the products related to micro-videos efficiently, appropriately, and accurately. We formulate the microvideo-product retrieval task, which is the first attempt to explore the retrieval between the multi-modal and multi-modal instances. A novel approach named Multi-Queue Momentum Contrast (MQMC) network is proposed for bidirectional retrieval, consisting of the uni-modal feature and multi-modal instance representation learning. Moreover, a discriminative selection strategy with a multi-queue is used to distinguish the importance of different negatives based on their categories. We collect two large-scale microvideo-product datasets (MVS and MVS-large) for evaluation and manually construct the hierarchical category ontology, which covers sundry products in daily life. Extensive experiments show that MQMC outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines. Our replication package (including code, dataset, etc.) is publicly available at https://github.com/duyali2000/MQMC.

A limit on variations in the fine-structure constant from spectra of nearby Sun-like stars

The fine structure constant, $α$, sets the strength of the electromagnetic force. The Standard Model of particle physics provides no explanation for its value, which could potentially vary. The wavelengths of stellar absorption lines depend on $α$, but are subject to systematic effects owing to astrophysical processes in stellar atmospheres. We measured precise line wavelengths using 17 stars, selected to have almost identical atmospheric properties to those of the Sun (solar twins), which reduces those systematic effects. We found that $α$ varies by $\lesssim$50 parts-per-billion (ppb) within 50 parsecs from Earth. Combining the results from all 17 stars provides an empirical, local reference for stellar measurements of $α$ with an ensemble precision of 12 ppb.

Sensing as a Service in 6G Perceptive Networks: A Unified Framework for ISAC Resource Allocation

In the upcoming next-generation (5G-Advanced and 6G) wireless networks, sensing as a service will play a more important role than ever before. Recently, the concept of perceptive network is proposed as a paradigm shift that provides sensing and communication (S&C) services simultaneously. This type of technology is typically referred to as Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC). In this paper, we propose the concept of sensing quality of service (QoS) in terms of diverse applications. Specifically, the probability of detection, the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for parameter estimation and the posterior CRB for moving target indication are employed to measure the sensing QoS for detection, localization, and tracking, respectively. Then, we establish a unified framework for ISAC resource allocation, where the fairness and the comprehensiveness optimization criteria are considered for the aforementioned sensing services. The proposed schemes can flexibly allocate the limited power and bandwidth resources according to both S&C QoSs. Finally, we study the performance trade-off between S&C services in different resource allocation schemes by numerical simulations.

On the Performance Gain of Integrated Sensing and Communications: A Subspace Correlation Perspective

In this paper, we shed light on the performance gain of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) from the perspective of channel correlations between radar sensing and communication (S&C), namely ISAC subspace correlation. To begin with, we consider a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) ISAC system and reveal that the optimal ISAC signal is in the subspace spanned by the transmitted steering vectors of the sensing channel and the right singular matrix of the communication channel. By leveraging this result, we study a basic ISAC scenario with a single target and a single-antenna communication user, and derive the optimal waveform covariance matrix for minimizing the estimation error under a given communication rate constraint. To quantify the integration gain of ISAC systems, we define the subspace "correlation coefficient" to characterize the coupling effect between S&C channels. Finally, numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Integrated Sensing and Communications with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) are envisioned to be an integral part of future wireless networks, especially when operating at the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) frequency bands. However, establishing wireless connections at these high frequencies is quite challenging, mainly due to the penetrating pathloss that prevents reliable communication and sensing. Another emerging technology for next-generation wireless systems is reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which are capable of modifying harsh propagation environments. RISs are the focus of growing research and industrial attention, bringing forth the vision of smart and programmable signal propagation environments. In this article, we provide a tutorial-style overview of the applications and benefits of RISs for sensing functionalities in general, and for ISAC systems in particular. We highlight the potential advantages when fusing these two emerging technologies, and identify for the first time that: i) joint sensing and communications designs are most beneficial when the channels referring to these operations are coupled, and that ii) RISs offer means for controlling this beneficial coupling. The usefulness of RIS-aided ISAC goes beyond the individual obvious gains of each of these technologies in both performance and power efficiency. We also discuss the main signal processing challenges and future research directions which arise from the fusion of these two emerging technologies.

Enabling Programmable Mechanical Functions Using Mechanical Property And Geometry Tuning Approaches

The rapidly developing robotics industry demands structures with novel mechanical functions. Traditional approaches, developing new materials and designing new structures, face two challenges. Highly complex force-displacement functions can hardly be realized and one fabricated structure only has one or limited function. We perform theoretical calculations and FE simulations to demonstrate that the two challenges can be solved by making the mechanical property or geometry of the structure tunable. The mechanical property/geometry tuning approaches are further validated by experimental tests and the results show that multiple different and highly complex objective functions can be achieved accurately. We expect that the proposed tuning approaches will facilitate the development of advanced forms of mechanical metamaterials and a new generation of robotic hands.

Developing Reprogrammable Metasurfaces with Compressed Pre-curved Beams: Theory and Applications

This paper presents a mechanically bistable mechanism of the compressed pre-curved beam. A governing equation is proposed which can be used to predict and explain the bistability of the compressed pre-curved beam. FE simulations and experimental tests are performed to validate the analytical solution. The beams unique tunable and asymmetrical potential energy landscape is demonstrated which enables the compressed pre-curved beam to switch its stable position without the need of applying an external force to it. Based on that, a coupled beam element is designed and used as a building block to develop reprogrammable metasurfaces that can be programmed to exhibit different configurations.

Machine Learning Enabled Force Sensing of a Smart Skin for Robotics

Artificial skin with the sense of touch can support robots to interact with the surrounding environment efficiently and accomplish complex tasks. Traditional multi-layered artificial skins require complex manufacturing processes which can result in high cost as well as limitations on the material and size of the skin. In this paper, we demonstrate a machine learning based approach to predict positions of point loads using the most direct response as input signal: strain distribution. Starting with the simplest problem, predicting the position of a single point load acting on a flat surface, an ML model is developed, trained, and tested. Accurate predictions are obtained from the ML model, parameters that affect the accuracy are discussed, and validation tests are performed. After that, the ML model is modified to solve multi-objective prediction problems: predicting positions and magnitudes of multiple point loads. In the end, the ML model is upgraded to a 2-step model to predict the position of a point load acting on a deformable surface. The demonstrated approach enables a normal untreated surface to feel a touch no matter what the surface is made of or how large or small the size of the surface is. Therefore, we believe this ML-based load position prediction approach could be a promising tool for applications such as flexible touch screens, smart skin for robots, and micro touch sensors.

Mechanical Design Principles of Avian Eggshells for Survivability

Biological materials exhibit complex structure-property relationships which are only beginning to be elucidated. Understanding the underlying physical mechanisms of the structure-property relationships is the key to designing bioinspired materials. The eggshell is an excellent example because many design trade-offs are well balanced by its seemingly simple but highly evolved structures. The first design trade-off: to break an eggshell, the internal breaking load needed is much lower than the external breaking load. The reason is that the dome-shaped structure leads to a special stress distribution which inhibits the propagation of the first crack. The second design trade-off: the eggshell is tough during the incubation but weakened at the time of hatching. The membrane of the eggshell significantly improves the toughness by bridging the primary crack and creating more secondary cracks. Moreover, the moisture content-controlled property of the membrane makes the toughness of the eggshell tunable. The third design trade-off: the eggshell must be thick enough to withstand the external forces, but the supply of the building material calcium is limited. The proposed three-index model indicates that the driving force in the evolution of eggshell thickness could be the balance between the protection and nutrient consumption to maximize survivability. The general methodologies presented here hold great potential for the development of eggshell-inspired structural materials that can be used in sports safety applications and the packaging industry.

Disentangled Multimodal Representation Learning for Recommendation

Many multimodal recommender systems have been proposed to exploit the rich side information associated with users or items (e.g., user reviews and item images) for learning better user and item representations to improve the recommendation performance. Studies from psychology show that users have individual differences in the utilization of various modalities for organizing information. Therefore, for a certain factor of an item (such as appearance or quality), the features of different modalities are of varying importance to a user. However, existing methods ignore the fact that different modalities contribute differently towards a user's preference on various factors of an item. In light of this, in this paper, we propose a novel Disentangled Multimodal Representation Learning (DMRL) recommendation model, which can capture users' attention to different modalities on each factor in user preference modeling. In particular, we employ a disentangled representation technique to ensure the features of different factors in each modality are independent of each other. A multimodal attention mechanism is then designed to capture users' modality preference for each factor. Based on the estimated weights obtained by the attention mechanism, we make recommendations by combining the preference scores of a user's preferences to each factor of the target item over different modalities. Extensive evaluation on five real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method compared with existing methods.

RIS-assisted Integrated Sensing and Communications: A Subspace Rotation Approach

In this paper, we propose a novel joint active and passive beamforming approach for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmission with assistance of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to simultaneously detect a target and communicate with a communication user. We first show that the sensing and communication (S&C) performance can be jointly improved due to the capability of the RISs to control the ISAC channel. In particular, we show that RISs can favourably enhance both the channel gain and the coupling degree of S&C channels by modifying the underlying subspaces. In light of this, we develop a heuristic algorithm that expands and rotates the S&C subspaces that is able to attain significantly improved ISAC performance. To verify the effectiveness of the subspace rotation scheme, we further provide a benchmark scheme which maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the sensing receiver while guaranteeing the SNR at the communication user. Finally, numerical simulations are provided to validate the proposed approaches.

Survey for Distant Solar Twins (SDST) -- II. Design, observations and data

Studies of solar twins have key impacts on the astronomical community, but only $\sim$100--200 nearby solar twins ($<$ 1 kpc) have been reliably identified over the last few decades. The aim of our survey (SDST) is to identify $\sim$150--200 distant solar twins and analogues (up to $\lesssim$ 4 kpc) closer to the Galactic Centre. We took advantage of the precise Gaia and Skymapper surveys to select Sun-like candidates in a 2-degree field, which were observed with the HERMES spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We successfully built up the required signal-to-noise ratio (25-per-pixel in the HERMES red band) for most targets as faint as Gaia G of 17.4 mag. The stellar photometric/astrometric parameters (e.g., \teff, \logg, mass) of our candidates are derived in this paper, while the spectroscopic parameters will be presented in the third paper in this SDST series. The selection success rate - the fraction of targets which belong to solar twins or analogues - was estimated from simulated survey data and the Besançon stellar population model, and compared with the actual success rate of the survey. We find that expected and actual success rates agree well, indicating that the numbers of solar twins and analogues we discover in SDST are consistent with expectations, affirming the survey approach. These distant solar analogues are prime targets for testing for any variation in the strength of electromagnetism in regions of higher dark matter density, and can make additional contributions to our understanding of, e.g., Galactic chemical evolution in the inner Milky Way.

Sensing-Assisted Eavesdropper Estimation: An ISAC Breakthrough in Physical Layer Security

In this paper, we investigate the sensing-aided physical layer security (PLS) towards Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems. A well-known limitation of PLS is the need to have information about potential eavesdroppers (Eves). The sensing functionality of ISAC offers an enabling role here, by estimating the directions of potential Eves to inform PLS. In our approach, the ISAC base station (BS) firstly emits an omni-directional waveform to search for potential Eves' directions by employing the combined Capon and approximate maximum likelihood (CAML) technique. Using the resulting information about potential Eves, we formulate secrecy rate expressions, that are a function of the Eves' estimation accuracy. We then formulate a weighted optimization problem to simultaneously maximize the secrecy rate and minimize the CRB with the aid of the artificial noise (AN), and minimize the CRB of targets'/Eves' estimation. By taking the possible estimation errors into account, we enforce a beampattern constraint with a wide main beam covering all possible directions of Eves. This implicates that security needs to be enforced in all these directions. By improving estimation accuracy, the sensing and security functionalities provide mutual benefits, resulting in improvement of the mutual performances with every iteration of the optimization, until convergence. Our results avail of these mutual benefits and reveal the usefulness of sensing as an enabler for practical PLS.

Probing Galactic variations in the fine-structure constant using solar twin stars: systematic errors

Sun-like stars are a new probe of variations in the fine-structure constant, $α$, via the solar twins approach: velocity separations of close pairs of absorption lines are compared between stars with very similar stellar parameters, i.e. effective temperature, metallicity and surface gravity within 100K, 0.1 dex and 0.2 dex of the Sun's values. Here we assess possible systematic errors in this approach by analysing $\gtrsim$10,000 archival exposures from the High-Accuracy Radial velocity Planetary Searcher (HARPS) of 130 stars covering a much broader range of stellar parameters. We find that each transition pair's separation shows broad, low-order variations with stellar parameters which can be accurately modelled, leaving only a small residual, intrinsic star-to-star scatter of 0-33 m/s (average $\approx$7 m/s, $\approx$10$^{-4}$Å at 5000Å). This limits the precision available from a single pair in one star. We consider potential systematic errors from a range of instrumental and astrophysical sources (e.g. wavelength calibration, charge transfer inefficiency, stellar magnetic activity, line blending) and conclude that variations in elemental abundances, isotope ratios and stellar rotational velocities may explain this star-to-star scatter. Finally, we find that the solar twins approach can be extended to solar analogues - within 300K, 0.3 dex and 0.4 dex of the Sun's parameters - without significant additional systematic errors, allowing a much larger number of stars to be used as probes of variation in $α$, including at much larger distances.

Probing Galactic variations in the fine-structure constant using solar twin stars: methodology and results

The rich absorption spectra of Sun-like stars are enticing probes for variations in the fine-structure constant, $α$, which gauges the strength of electromagnetism. While individual line wavelengths are sensitive to $α$, they are also sensitive to physical processes in the stellar atmospheres, which has precluded their use so far. Here we demonstrate a new, differential approach using solar twins: velocity separations between close pairs of transitions are compared across stars with very similar physical properties, strongly suppressing astrophysical and instrumental systematic errors. We utilise 423 archival exposures of 18 solar twins from the High-Accuracy Radial velocity Planetary Searcher (HARPS), in which calibration errors can be reduced to $\lesssim$3 m/s. For stars with $\approx$10 high signal-to-noise ratio spectra ($\ge$200 per pixel), velocity separations between pairs are measured with $\approx$10 m/s statistical precision. A companion paper assesses a range of systematic error sources using 130 stars, with a greater range of stellar parameters, providing accurate corrections for astrophysical effects and a residual, intrinsic star-to-star scatter of 0-13 m/s. Within these uncertainties, we find no evidence for velocity separation differences in 17 transition pairs between solar twins. In a second companion paper, this is found to limit local ($\lesssim$50 pc) variations in $α$ to $\approx$50 parts per billion, $\sim$2 orders of magnitude less than other Galactic constraints.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enabled Sensing: Cramér-Rao Lower Bound Optimization

This paper investigates intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) enabled non-line-of-sight (NLoS) wireless sensing, in which an IRS is deployed to assist an access point (AP) to sense a target in its NLoS region. It is assumed that the AP is equipped with multiple antennas and the IRS is equipped with a uniform linear array. The AP aims to estimate the target's direction-of-arrival (DoA) with respect to the IRS, based on the echo signals from the AP-IRS-target-IRS-AP link. Under this setup, we jointly design the transmit beamforming at the AP and the reflective beamforming at the IRS to minimize the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) on estimation error. Towards this end, we first obtain the CRLB expression for estimating the DoA in closed form. Next, we optimize the joint beamforming design to minimize the CRLB, via alternating optimization, semi-definite relaxation, and successive convex approximation. Numerical results show that the proposed design based on CRLB minimization achieves improved sensing performance in terms of mean squared error, as compared to the traditional schemes with signal-to-noise ratio maximization and separate beamforming.

Practical Adversarial Attacks on Spatiotemporal Traffic Forecasting Models

Machine learning based traffic forecasting models leverage sophisticated spatiotemporal auto-correlations to provide accurate predictions of city-wide traffic states. However, existing methods assume a reliable and unbiased forecasting environment, which is not always available in the wild. In this work, we investigate the vulnerability of spatiotemporal traffic forecasting models and propose a practical adversarial spatiotemporal attack framework. Specifically, instead of simultaneously attacking all geo-distributed data sources, an iterative gradient-guided node saliency method is proposed to identify the time-dependent set of victim nodes. Furthermore, we devise a spatiotemporal gradient descent based scheme to generate real-valued adversarial traffic states under a perturbation constraint. Meanwhile, we theoretically demonstrate the worst performance bound of adversarial traffic forecasting attacks. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets show that the proposed two-step framework achieves up to $67.8\%$ performance degradation on various advanced spatiotemporal forecasting models. Remarkably, we also show that adversarial training with our proposed attacks can significantly improve the robustness of spatiotemporal traffic forecasting models. Our code is available in \url{https://github.com/luckyfan-cs/ASTFA}.
