Probing Landau levels of strongly interacting massive Dirac electrons in layer-polarized MoS$_2$

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are recently emerged 2D electronic systems with various novel properties, such as spin-valley locking, circular dichroism, valley Hall effects, Ising superconductivity. The reduced dimensionality and large effective masses further produce unconventional many-body interaction effects. Although recent hole transport measurements in WSe$_2$ indicate strong interactions in the valence bands, many-body interaction effects, particularly in the conduction bands, remain elusive to date. Here, for the first time, we perform transport measurements up to a magnetic field of $29$T to study the massive Dirac electron Landau levels (LL) in layer-polarized MoS$_2$ samples with mobilities of $22000$cm$^2$/(V$\cdot$s) at $1.5$K and densities of $\sim10^{12}$cm$^{-2}$. With decreasing the density, we observe LL crossing induced valley ferrimagnet-to-ferromagnet transitions, as a result of the interaction enhancement of the g-factor from $5.64$ to $21.82$. Near integer ratios of Zeeman-to-cyclotron energies, we discover LL anticrossings due to the formation of quantum Hall Ising ferromagnets, the valley polarizations of which appear to be reversible by tuning the density or an in-plane magnetic field. Our results provide compelling evidence for many-body interaction effects in the conduction bands of monolayer MoS$_2$ and establish a fertile ground for exploring strongly correlated phenomena of massive Dirac electrons.

Neutrinos propagating in curved spacetimes

In the Dirac-Weyl equation that describes massless neutrino propagation in the minimal Standard Model, the ($2\times 2$ equivalence of the) gamma matrices convert Weyl spinors into spacetime tensors, and vice versa. They can thus be regarded as amalgamations of three different types of mappings, one that connects particle spinors directly forming representations to internal gauge symmetries to their spacetime counterparts that are embodied by null flags, another that translates the spacetime spinors into their corresponding tensors expressed in an orthonormal tetrad, and finally a purely tensorial transformation into the coordinate tetrad. The splitting of spinors into particle and spacetime varieties is not usually practised, but we advocate its adoption for better physical clarity, in terms of distinguishing internal and spacetime transformations, and also for understanding the scattering of neutrinos by spacetime curvature. We construct the basic infrastructure required for this task, and provide a worked example for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our investigation also uncovers a possible under-determinacy in the flavoured Dirac-Weyl equation, which could serve as a new incision point for introducing flavour oscillation mechanisms.

Pulsar current sheet Cerenkov radiation

Plasma-filled pulsar magnetospheres contain thin current sheets wherein the charged particles are accelerated by magnetic reconnections to travel at ultra-relativistic speeds. On the other hand, the plasma frequency of the more regular force-free regions of the magnetosphere rests almost precisely on the upper limit of radio frequencies, with the cyclotron frequency being far higher due to the strong magnetic field. This combination produces a peculiar situation, whereby radio-frequency waves can travel at subluminal speeds without becoming evanescent. The conditions are thus conducive to Cerenkov radiation originating from current sheets, which could plausibly serve as a coherent radio emission mechanism. In this paper we aim to provide a portrait of the relevant processes involved, and show that this mechanism can possibly account for some of the most salient features of the observed radio signals.

Valley Topological Phases in Bilayer Sonic Crystals

Recently, the topological physics in artificial crystals for classical waves has become an emerging research area. In this Letter, we propose a unique bilayer design of sonic crystals that are constructed by two layers of coupled hexagonal array of triangular scatterers. Assisted by the additional layer degree of freedom, a rich topological phase diagram is achieved by simply rotating scatterers in both layers. Under a unified theoretical framework, two kinds of valley-projected topological acoustic insulators are distinguished analytically, i.e., the layer-mixed and layer-polarized topological valley Hall phases, respectively. The theory is evidently confirmed by our numerical and experimental observations of the nontrivial edge states that propagate along the interfaces separating different topological phases. Various applications such as sound communications in integrated devices, can be anticipated by the intriguing acoustic edge states enriched by the layer information.

Equation of State Dependence of Nonlinear Mode-tide Coupling in Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars

Recently, an instability due to the nonlinear coupling of p-modes to g-modes in tidally deformed neutron stars in coalescing binaries has been studied in some detail. The result is significant because it could influence the inspiral and leave an imprint on the gravitational wave signal that depends on the neutron star equation of state (EOS). Because of its potential importance, the details of the instability should be further elucidated and its sensitivity to the EOS should be investigated. To this end, we carry out a numerical analysis with six representative EOSs for both static and non-static tides. We confirm that the absence of the p-g instability under static tides, as well as its return under non-static tides, is generic across EOSs, and further reveal a new contribution to it that becomes important for moderately high-order p-g pairs (previous studies concentrated on very high order modes), whose associated coupling strength can vary by factors of ~10-100 depending on the EOS. We find that, for stars with stiffer EOSs and smaller buoyancy frequencies, the instability onsets earlier in the inspiral and the unstable modes grow faster. These results suggest that the instability's impact on the gravitational wave signal might be sensitive to the neutron star EOS. To fully assess this prospect, future studies will need to investigate its saturation as a function of the EOS and the binary parameters.

π and 4π Josephson Effects Mediated by a Dirac Semimetal

Cd3As2 is a three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal with connected Fermi-arc surface states. It has been suggested that topological superconductivity can be achieved in the nontrivial surface states of topological materials by utilizing the superconductor proximity effect. Here we report observations of both π and 4π periodic supercurrents in aluminum-Cd3As2-aluminum Josephson junctions. The π period is manifested by both the magnetic-field dependence of the critical supercurrent and the appearance of half-integer Shapiro steps in the a.c. Josephson effect. Our macroscopic theory suggests that the π period arises from interference between the induced bulk superconductivity and the induced Fermi arc surface superconductivity. The 4π period is manifested by the missing first Shapiro steps and is expected for topological superconductivity.

$L_2$-Box Optimization for Green Cloud-RAN via Network Adaptation

In this paper, we propose a reformulation for the Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) problem into an exact and continuous model through using the $\ell_2$-box technique to recast the binary constraints into a box with an $\ell_2$ sphere constraint. The reformulated problem can be tackled by a dual ascent algorithm combined with a Majorization-Minimization (MM) method for the subproblems to solve the network power consumption problem of the Cloud Radio Access Network (Cloud-RAN), and which leads to solving a sequence of Difference of Convex (DC) subproblems handled by an inexact MM algorithm. After obtaining the final solution, we use it as the initial result of the bi-section Group Sparse Beamforming (GSBF) algorithm to promote the group-sparsity of beamformers, rather than using the weighted $\ell_1 / \ell_2$-norm. Simulation results indicate that the new method outperforms the bi-section GSBF algorithm by achieving smaller network power consumption, especially in sparser cases, i.e., Cloud-RANs with a lot of Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) but fewer users.

Valley-Selective Topological Ordered States in Irradiated Bilayer Graphene

Gapless bilayer graphene is susceptible to a variety of spontaneously gapped states. As predicted by theory and observed by experiment, the ground state is however topologically trivial, because a valley-independent gap is energetically favorable. Here, we show that under the application of interlayer electric field and circularly polarized light, one valley can be selected to exhibit the original interaction instability while the other is frozen out. Tuning this Floquet system stabilizes multiple competing topological ordered states, distinguishable by edge transport and circular dichroism. Notably, quantized charge, spin, and valley Hall conductivities coexist in one stabilized state.

Topological Majorana Two-Channel Kondo Effect

A one-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor hosts a Majorana Kramers pair at each end, where time-reversal symmetry acts as a supersymmetry that flips local fermion parity. We examine the transport anomaly of such a superconductor, floating and tunnel-coupled to normal leads at its two ends. We demonstrate the realization of a topologically-protected, channel-symmetric, two-channel Kondo effect without fine-tuning. Whereas the nonlocal teleportation vanishes, a lead present at one end telecontrols the universal transport through the other end.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

Modified multi-dimensional limiting process with enhanced shock stability on unstructured grids

The basic concept of multi-dimensional limiting process (MLP) on unstructured grids is inherited and modified for improving shock stabilities and reducing numerical dissipation on smooth regions. A relaxed version of MLP condition, simply named as weak-MLP, is proposed for reducing dissipation. Moreover, a stricter condition, that is the strict-MLP condition, is proposed to enhance the numerical stability. The maximum/minimum principle is fulfilled by both the strict- and weak-MLP condition. A differentiable pressure weight function is applied for the combination of two novel conditions, and thus the modified limiter is named as MLP-pw(pressure-weighted). A series of numerical test cases show that MLP-pw limiter has improved stability and convergence, especially in hypersonic simulations. Furthermore, the limiter also shows lower dissipation in regions without significant pressure transition. Therefore, MLP-pw limiter can capture contact discontinuity and expansion accurately.

Probing strong interactions in p-type few-layer WSe$_2$ by density-dependent Landau level crossing

Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) such as MoS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ are emerging as a new platform for exploring many-body effects. Coulomb interactions are markedly enhanced in these materials because of the reduced screening and the large Wigner-Seitz radii. Although many-body excitonic effects in TMDCs have been extensively studied by optical means, not until recently did probing their strongly correlated electronic effects become possible in transport. Here, in p-type few-layer WSe$_2$ we observe highly density-dependent quantum Hall states of Γ valley holes below 12 T, whose predominant sequences alternate between odd- and even-integers. By tilting the magnetic field to induce Landau level crossings, we show that the strong Coulomb interaction enhances the Zeeman-to-cyclotron energy ratio from 2.67 to 3.55 as the density is reduced from 5.7 to 4.0$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, giving rise to the even-odd alternation. Unprecedentedly, this indicates a 4.8 times enhancement of the g-factor over its band theory value at a density as high as 4.0$\times$10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$. Our findings unambiguously demonstrate that p-type few-layer WSe$_2$ is a superior platform for exploring strongly correlated electronic phenomena, opening a new perspective for realizing the elusive Wigner crystallization at a moderate density.

Scalar, Vector and Tensor Harmonics on the Three-Sphere

Scalar, vector and tensor harmonics on the three-sphere were introduced originally to facilitate the study of various problems in gravitational physics. These harmonics are defined as eigenfunctions of the covariant Laplace operator which satisfy certain divergence and trace identities, and ortho-normality conditions. This paper provides a summary of these properties, along with a new notation that simplifies and clarifies some of the key expressions. Practical methods are described for accurately and efficiently computing these harmonics numerically, and test results are given that illustrate how well the analytical identities are satisfied by the harmonics computed numerically in this way.

DeepUNet: A Deep Fully Convolutional Network for Pixel-level Sea-Land Segmentation

Semantic segmentation is a fundamental research in remote sensing image processing. Because of the complex maritime environment, the sea-land segmentation is a challenging task. Although the neural network has achieved excellent performance in semantic segmentation in the last years, there are a few of works using CNN for sea-land segmentation and the results could be further improved. This paper proposes a novel deep convolution neural network named DeepUNet. Like the U-Net, its structure has a contracting path and an expansive path to get high resolution output. But differently, the DeepUNet uses DownBlocks instead of convolution layers in the contracting path and uses UpBlock in the expansive path. The two novel blocks bring two new connections that are U-connection and Plus connection. They are promoted to get more precise segmentation results. To verify our network architecture, we made a new challenging sea-land dataset and compare the DeepUNet on it with the SegNet and the U-Net. Experimental results show that DeepUNet achieved good performance compared with other architectures, especially in high-resolution remote sensing imagery.

Quantum Hall Charge Kondo Criticality

The long-thought charge Kondo effects have recently been experimentally realized in the quantum Hall regime. This experiment, supported by numerics, exemplifies the realization of two-channel Kondo state, a non-Fermi Liquid, and its crossover to the one-channel counterpart, a Fermi liquid. Scaling up such a platform, we find a hierarchy of non-Fermi Liquids and their tunable crossovers based on a renormalization group analysis. Utilizing results from a conformal field theory, we further examine the universal conductances of this strongly correlated system and their finite temperature scaling, which elucidate the sharp distinctions between charge and spin Kondo physics.

AccurateML: Information-aggregation-based Approximate Processing for Fast and Accurate Machine Learning on MapReduce

The growing demands of processing massive datasets have promoted irresistible trends of running machine learning applications on MapReduce. When processing large input data, it is often of greater values to produce fast and accurate enough approximate results than slow exact results. Existing techniques produce approximate results by processing parts of the input data, thus incurring large accuracy losses when using short job execution times, because all the skipped input data potentially contributes to result accuracy. We address this limitation by proposing AccurateML that aggregates information of input data in each map task to create small aggregated data points. These aggregated points enable all map tasks producing initial outputs quickly to save computation times and decrease the outputs' size to reduce communication times. Our approach further identifies the parts of input data most related to result accuracy, thus first using these parts to improve the produced outputs to minimize accuracy losses. We evaluated AccurateML using real machine learning applications and datasets. The results show: (i) it reduces execution times by 30 times with small accuracy losses compared to exact results; (ii) when using the same execution times, it achieves 2.71 times reductions in accuracy losses compared to existing approximate processing techniques.

SAR Target Recognition Using the Multi-aspect-aware Bidirectional LSTM Recurrent Neural Networks

The outstanding pattern recognition performance of deep learning brings new vitality to the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) automatic target recognition (ATR). However, there is a limitation in current deep learning based ATR solution that each learning process only handle one SAR image, namely learning the static scattering information, while missing the space-varying information. It is obvious that multi-aspect joint recognition introduced space-varying scattering information should improve the classification accuracy and robustness. In this paper, a novel multi-aspect-aware method is proposed to achieve this idea through the bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks based space-varying scattering information learning. Specifically, we first select different aspect images to generate the multi-aspect space-varying image sequences. Then, the Gabor filter and three-patch local binary pattern (TPLBP) are progressively implemented to extract a comprehensive spatial features, followed by dimensionality reduction with the Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) network. Finally, we design a bidirectional LSTM recurrent neural network to learn the multi-aspect features with further integrating the softmax classifier to achieve target recognition. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve 99.9% accuracy for 10-class recognition. Besides, its anti-noise and anti-confusion performance are also better than the conventional deep learning based methods.

A GPU Based Memory Optimized Parallel Method For FFT Implementation

FFT (fast Fourier transform) plays a very important role in many fields, such as digital signal processing, digital image processing and so on. However, in application, FFT becomes a factor of affecting the processing efficiency, especially in remote sensing, which large amounts of data need to be processed with FFT. So shortening the FFT computation time is particularly important. GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) has been used in many common areas and its acceleration effect is very obvious compared with CPU (Central Processing Unit) platform. In this paper, we present a new parallel method to execute FFT on GPU. Based on GPU storage system and hardware processing pipeline, we improve the way of data storage. We divided the data into parts reasonably according the size of data to make full use of the characteristics of the GPU. We propose the memory optimized method based on share memory and texture memory to reduce the number of global memory access to achieve better efficiency. The results show that the GPU-based memory optimized FFT implementation not only can increase over 100% than FFTW library in CPU platform, but also can improve over 30% than CUFFT library in GPU platform.
