Joint Secrecy Rate Achieving and Authentication Enhancement via Tag-based Encoding in Chaotic UAV Communication Environment

Secure communication is crucial in many emerging systems enabled by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks. To protect legitimate communication in a chaotic UAV environment, where both eavesdropping and jamming become straightforward from multiple adversaries with line-of-sight signal propagation, a new reliable and integrated physical layer security mechanism is proposed in this paper for a massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) UAV system. Particularly, a physical layer fingerprint, also called a tag, is first embedded into each message for authentication purpose. We then propose to reuse the tag additionally as a reference to encode each message to ensure secrecy for confidentiality enhancement at a low cost. Specifically, we create a new dual-reference symmetric tag generation mechanism by inputting an encoding-insensitive feature of plaintext along with the key into a hash function. At a legitimate receiver, an expected tag, reliable for decoding, can be symmetrically regenerated based on the received ciphertext, and authentication can be performed by comparing the regenerated reference tag to the received tag. However, an illegitimate receiver can only receive the fuzzy tag which can not be used to decode the received message. Additionally, we introduce artificial noise (AN) to degrade eavesdropping to further decrease message leakage. To verify the efficiency of our proposed tag-based encoding (TBE) scheme, we formulate two optimization problems including ergodic sum secrecy rate maximization and authentication fail probability minimization. The power allocation solutions are derived by difference-of-convex (DC) programming and the Lagrange method, respectively. The simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed TBE approach compared to the prior AN-aided tag embedding scheme.

Stackelberg Game Based Performance Optimization in Digital Twin Assisted Federated Learning over NOMA Networks

Despite the advantage of preserving data privacy, federated learning (FL) still suffers from the straggler issue due to the limited computing resources of distributed clients and the unreliable wireless communication environment. By effectively imitating the distributed resources, digital twin (DT) shows great potential in alleviating this issue. In this paper, we leverage DT in the FL framework over non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network to assist FL training process, considering malicious attacks on model updates from clients. A reputationbased client selection scheme is proposed, which accounts for client heterogeneity in multiple aspects and effectively mitigates the risks of poisoning attacks in FL systems. To minimize the total latency and energy consumption in the proposed system, we then formulate a Stackelberg game by considering clients and the server as the leader and the follower, respectively. Specifically, the leader aims to minimize the energy consumption while the objective of the follower is to minimize the total latency during FL training. The Stackelberg equilibrium is achieved to obtain the optimal solutions. We first derive the strategies for the followerlevel problem and include them in the leader-level problem which is then solved via problem decomposition. Simulation results verify the superior performance of the proposed scheme.

Knowledge Sharing-enabled Semantic Rate Maximization for Multi-cell Task-oriented Hybrid Semantic-Bit Communication Networks

In task-oriented semantic communications, the transmitters are designed to deliver task-related semantic information rather than every signal bit to receivers, which alleviates the spectrum pressure by reducing network traffic loads. Effective semantic communications depend on the perfect alignment of shared knowledge between transmitters and receivers, however, the alignment of knowledge cannot always be guaranteed in practice. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel knowledge sharing-enabled task-oriented hybrid semantic and bit communications mechanism, where a mobile device (MD) can proactively share and upload the task-related mismatched knowledge to associated small base station (SBS). The traditional bit communications can be adopted as an aid to transmit the rest data related to unshared mismatched knowledge to guarantee the effective execution of target tasks. Considering the heterogeneous transceivers in multi-cell networks, target task demands, and channel conditions, an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the generalized effective semantic transmission rate of all MDs by jointly optimizing knowledge sharing, semantic extraction ratio, and SBS association, while satisfying the semantic accuracy requirements and delay tolerances of MD target tasks. The formulated mixed integer nonlinear programming problem is decomposed into multiple subproblems equivalently. An optimum algorithm is proposed and another efficient algorithm is further developed using hierarchical class partitioning and monotonic optimization. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and superior performance of proposed solutions.

Collaborative Knowledge Sharing-empowered Effective Semantic Rate Maximization for Two-tier Semantic-Bit Communication Networks

Effective task-oriented semantic communications relies on perfect knowledge alignment between transmitters and receivers for accurate recovery of task-related semantic information, which can be susceptible to knowledge misalignment and performance degradation in practice. To tackle this issue, continual knowledge updating and sharing are crucial to adapt to evolving task and user related demands, despite the incurred resource overhead and increased latency. In this paper, we propose a novel collaborative knowledge sharing-empowered semantic transmission mechanism in a two-tier edge network, exploiting edge cooperations and bit communications to address KB mismatch. By deriving a generalized effective semantic transmission rate (GESTR) that considers both semantic accuracy and overhead, we formulate a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem to maximize GESTR of all mobile devices by optimizing knowledge sharing decisions, extraction ratios, and BS/subchannel allocations, subject to task accuracy and delay requirements. The joint optimum solution can be obtained by proposed fractional programming based branch and bound algorithm and modified Kuhn-Munkres algorithm efficiently. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of proposed solution, especially in low signal-to-noise conditions.

Experimental Demonstration of Logical Magic State Distillation

Realizing universal fault-tolerant quantum computation is a key goal in quantum information science. By encoding quantum information into logical qubits utilizing quantum error correcting codes, physical errors can be detected and corrected, enabling substantial reduction in logical error rates. However, the set of logical operations that can be easily implemented on such encoded qubits is often constrained, necessitating the use of special resource states known as 'magic states' to implement universal, classically hard circuits. A key method to prepare high-fidelity magic states is to perform 'distillation', creating them from multiple lower fidelity inputs. Here we present the experimental realization of magic state distillation with logical qubits on a neutral-atom quantum computer. Our approach makes use of a dynamically reconfigurable architecture to encode and perform quantum operations on many logical qubits in parallel. We demonstrate the distillation of magic states encoded in d=3 and d=5 color codes, observing improvements of the logical fidelity of the output magic states compared to the input logical magic states. These experiments demonstrate a key building block of universal fault-tolerant quantum computation, and represent an important step towards large-scale logical quantum processors.

Uncertainty Evaluation of the Caesium Fountain Primary Frequency Standard NIM6

A new caesium (Cs) fountain clock NIM6 has been developed at the National Institute of Metrology (NIM) in China, for which a comprehensive uncertainty evaluation is presented. A three-dimensional magneto-optical trap (3D MOT) loading optical molasses is employed to obtain more cold atoms rapidly and efficiently with a tunable, uniform density distribution. A heat pipe surrounding the flight tube maintains a consistent and stable temperature within the interrogation region. Additionally, a Ramsey cavity with four azimuthally distribution feeds is utilized to mitigate distributed cavity phase shifts. The Cs fountain clock NIM6 achieves a short-term stability of 1.0x10-13 τ-1/2 at high atomic density, and a typical overall fractional type-B uncertainty is estimated to be 2.3x10-16. Comparisons of frequency between the Cs fountain NIM6 and other Cs fountain Primary Frequency Standards (PFSs) through Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) have demonstrated an agreement within the stated uncertainties.

Admittance Visuomotor Policy Learning for General-Purpose Contact-Rich Manipulations

Contact force in contact-rich environments is an essential modality for robots to perform general-purpose manipulation tasks, as it provides information to compensate for the deficiencies of visual and proprioceptive data in collision perception, high-precision grasping, and efficient manipulation. In this paper, we propose an admittance visuomotor policy framework for continuous, general-purpose, contact-rich manipulations. During demonstrations, we designed a low-cost, user-friendly teleoperation system with contact interaction, aiming to gather compliant robot demonstrations and accelerate the data collection process. During training and inference, we propose a diffusion-based model to plan action trajectories and desired contact forces from multimodal observation that includes contact force, vision and proprioception. We utilize an admittance controller for compliance action execution. A comparative evaluation with two state-of-the-art methods was conducted on five challenging tasks, each focusing on different action primitives, to demonstrate our framework's generalization capabilities. Results show our framework achieves the highest success rate and exhibits smoother and more efficient contact compared to other methods, the contact force required to complete each tasks was reduced on average by 48.8%, and the success rate was increased on average by 15.3%. The Fourier Cosine Method for Discrete Probability Distributions

We provide a rigorous convergence proof demonstrating that the well-known semi-analytical Fourier cosine (COS) formula for the inverse Fourier transform of continuous probability distributions can be extended to discrete probability distributions, with the help of spectral filters. We establish general convergence rates for these filters and further show that several classical spectral filters achieve convergence rates one order faster than previously recognized in the literature on the Gibbs phenomenon. Our numerical experiments corroborate the theoretical convergence results. Additionally, we illustrate the computational speed and accuracy of the discrete COS method with applications in computational statistics and quantitative finance. The theoretical and numerical results highlight the method's potential for solving problems involving discrete distributions, particularly when the characteristic function is known, allowing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) to be bypassed.

Improving Channel Resilience for Task-Oriented Semantic Communications: A Unified Information Bottleneck Approach

Task-oriented semantic communications (TSC) enhance radio resource efficiency by transmitting task-relevant semantic information. However, current research often overlooks the inherent semantic distinctions among encoded features. Due to unavoidable channel variations from time and frequency-selective fading, semantically sensitive feature units could be more susceptible to erroneous inference if corrupted by dynamic channels. Therefore, this letter introduces a unified channel-resilient TSC framework via information bottleneck. This framework complements existing TSC approaches by controlling information flow to capture fine-grained feature-level semantic robustness. Experiments on a case study for real-time subchannel allocation validate the framework's effectiveness.

Active Admittance Control with Iterative Learning for General-Purpose Contact-Rich Manipulation

Force interaction is inevitable when robots face multiple operation scenarios. How to make the robot competent in force control for generalized operations such as multi-tasks still remains a challenging problem. Aiming at the reproducibility of interaction tasks and the lack of a generalized force control framework for multi-task scenarios, this paper proposes a novel hybrid control framework based on active admittance control with iterative learning parameters-tunning mechanism. The method adopts admittance control as the underlying algorithm to ensure flexibility, and iterative learning as the high-level algorithm to regulate the parameters of the admittance model. The whole algorithm has flexibility and learning ability, which is capable of achieving the goal of excellent versatility. Four representative interactive robot manipulation tasks are chosen to investigate the consistency and generalisability of the proposed method. Experiments are designed to verify the effectiveness of the whole framework, and an average of 98.21% and 91.52% improvement of RMSE is obtained relative to the traditional admittance control as well as the model-free adaptive control, respectively.

Semantic Extraction Model Selection for IoT Devices in Edge-assisted Semantic Communications

Semantic communications offer the potential to alleviate communication loads by exchanging meaningful information. However, semantic extraction (SE) is computationally intensive, posing challenges for resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To address this, leveraging computing resources at the edge servers (ESs) is essential. ESs can support multiple SE models for various tasks, making it crucial to select appropriate SE models based on diverse requirements of IoT devices and limited ES computing resources. In this letter, we study an SE model selection problem, where the ES co-located at the access point can provide multiple SE models to execute the uploaded SE tasks of associated IoT devices. We aim to maximize the total semantic rate of all SE tasks by selecting appropriate SE models, while considering SE delay and ES capacity constraints, and SE accuracy requirements. The formulated NP-complete integer programming problem is transformed into a modified Knapsack problem. The proposed efficient approximation algorithm using dynamic programming can yield a guaranteed near-optimum solution. Simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of proposed solution.

Client Orchestration and Cost-Efficient Joint Optimization for NOMA-Enabled Hierarchical Federated Learning

Hierarchical federated learning (HFL) shows great advantages over conventional two-layer federated learning (FL) in reducing network overhead and interaction latency while still retaining the data privacy of distributed FL clients. However, the communication and energy overhead still pose a bottleneck for HFL performance, especially as the number of clients raises dramatically. To tackle this issue, we propose a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled HFL system under semi-synchronous cloud model aggregation in this paper, aiming to minimize the total cost of time and energy at each HFL global round. Specifically, we first propose a novel fuzzy logic based client orchestration policy considering client heterogenerity in multiple aspects, including channel quality, data quantity and model staleness. Subsequently, given the fuzzy based client-edge association, a joint edge server scheduling and resource allocation problem is formulated. Utilizing problem decomposition, we firstly derive the closed-form solution for the edge server scheduling subproblem via the penalty dual decomposition (PDD) method. Next, a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) based algorithm is proposed to tackle the resource allocation subproblem considering time-varying environments. Finally, extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the considered benchmarks regarding HFL performance improvement and total cost reduction.

MIM-GAN-based Anomaly Detection for Multivariate Time Series Data

The loss function of Generative adversarial network(GAN) is an important factor that affects the quality and diversity of the generated samples for anomaly detection. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised multiple time series anomaly detection algorithm based on the GAN with message importance measure(MIM-GAN). In particular, the time series data is divided into subsequences using a sliding window. Then a generator and a discriminator designed based on the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) are employed to capture the temporal correlations of the time series data. To avoid the local optimal solution of loss function and the model collapse, we introduce an exponential information measure into the loss function of GAN. Additionally, a discriminant reconstruction score consisting on discrimination and reconstruction loss is taken into account. The global optimal solution for the loss function is derived and the model collapse is proved to be avoided in our proposed MIM-GAN-based anomaly detection algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed MIM-GAN-based anomaly detection algorithm has superior performance in terms of precision, recall, and F1 score.

Joint Age-based Client Selection and Resource Allocation for Communication-Efficient Federated Learning over NOMA Networks

In federated learning (FL), distributed clients can collaboratively train a shared global model while retaining their own training data locally. Nevertheless, the performance of FL is often limited by the slow convergence due to poor communications links when FL is deployed over wireless networks. Due to the scarceness of radio resources, it is crucial to select clients precisely and allocate communication resource accurately for enhancing FL performance. To address these challenges, in this paper, a joint optimization problem of client selection and resource allocation is formulated, aiming to minimize the total time consumption of each round in FL over a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) enabled wireless network. Specifically, considering the staleness of the local FL models, we propose an age of update (AoU) based novel client selection scheme. Subsequently, the closed-form expressions for resource allocation are derived by monotonicity analysis and dual decomposition method. In addition, a server-side artificial neural network (ANN) is proposed to predict the FL models of clients who are not selected at each round to further improve FL performance. Finally, extensive simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed schemes over FL performance, average AoU and total time consumption.

Which Invariance Should We Transfer? A Causal Minimax Learning Approach

A major barrier to deploying current machine learning models lies in their non-reliability to dataset shifts. To resolve this problem, most existing studies attempted to transfer stable information to unseen environments. Particularly, independent causal mechanisms-based methods proposed to remove mutable causal mechanisms via the do-operator. Compared to previous methods, the obtained stable predictors are more effective in identifying stable information. However, a key question remains: which subset of this whole stable information should the model transfer, in order to achieve optimal generalization ability? To answer this question, we present a comprehensive minimax analysis from a causal perspective. Specifically, we first provide a graphical condition for the whole stable set to be optimal. When this condition fails, we surprisingly find with an example that this whole stable set, although can fully exploit stable information, is not the optimal one to transfer. To identify the optimal subset under this case, we propose to estimate the worst-case risk with a novel optimization scheme over the intervention functions on mutable causal mechanisms. We then propose an efficient algorithm to search for the subset with minimal worst-case risk, based on a newly defined equivalence relation between stable subsets. Compared to the exponential cost of exhaustively searching over all subsets, our searching strategy enjoys a polynomial complexity. The effectiveness and efficiency of our methods are demonstrated on synthetic data and the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Towards Better Entity Linking with Multi-View Enhanced Distillation

Dense retrieval is widely used for entity linking to retrieve entities from large-scale knowledge bases. Mainstream techniques are based on a dual-encoder framework, which encodes mentions and entities independently and calculates their relevances via rough interaction metrics, resulting in difficulty in explicitly modeling multiple mention-relevant parts within entities to match divergent mentions. Aiming at learning entity representations that can match divergent mentions, this paper proposes a Multi-View Enhanced Distillation (MVD) framework, which can effectively transfer knowledge of multiple fine-grained and mention-relevant parts within entities from cross-encoders to dual-encoders. Each entity is split into multiple views to avoid irrelevant information being over-squashed into the mention-relevant view. We further design cross-alignment and self-alignment mechanisms for this framework to facilitate fine-grained knowledge distillation from the teacher model to the student model. Meanwhile, we reserve a global-view that embeds the entity as a whole to prevent dispersal of uniform information. Experiments show our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on several entity linking benchmarks.

Time-aware Multiway Adaptive Fusion Network for Temporal Knowledge Graph Question Answering

Knowledge graphs (KGs) have received increasing attention due to its wide applications on natural language processing. However, its use case on temporal question answering (QA) has not been well-explored. Most of existing methods are developed based on pre-trained language models, which might not be capable to learn \emph{temporal-specific} presentations of entities in terms of temporal KGQA task. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel \textbf{T}ime-aware \textbf{M}ultiway \textbf{A}daptive (\textbf{TMA}) fusion network. Inspired by the step-by-step reasoning behavior of humans. For each given question, TMA first extracts the relevant concepts from the KG, and then feeds them into a multiway adaptive module to produce a \emph{temporal-specific} representation of the question. This representation can be incorporated with the pre-trained KG embedding to generate the final prediction. Empirical results verify that the proposed model achieves better performance than the state-of-the-art models in the benchmark dataset. Notably, the Hits@1 and Hits@10 results of TMA on the CronQuestions dataset's complex questions are absolutely improved by 24\% and 10\% compared to the best-performing baseline. Furthermore, we also show that TMA employing an adaptive fusion mechanism can provide interpretability by analyzing the proportion of information in question representations.
