An Icosahedral Quasicrystal as a Golden Modification of the Icosagrid and its Connection to the E8 Lattice

We present an icosahedral quasicrystal as a modification of the icosagrid, a multigrid with 10 plane sets that are arranged with icosahedral symmetry. We use the Fibonacci chain to space the planes, thereby obtaining a quasicrystal with icosahedral symmetry. It has a surprising correlation to the Elser-Sloane quasicrystal, a 4D cut-and-project of the E8 lattice. We call this quasicrystal the Fibonacci modified icosagrid quasicrystal. We found that this structure totally embeds another quasicrystal that is a compound of 20 3D slices of the Elser-Sloane quasicrystal. The slices, which contain only regular tetrahedra, are put together by a certain golden ratio based rotation. Interesting 20-tetrahedron clusters arranged with the golden ratio based rotation appear repetitively in the structure. They are arranged with icosahedral symmetry. It turns out that this rotation is the dihedral angle of the 600-cell (the super-cell of the Elser-Sloane quasicrystal) and the angle between the tetrahedral facets in the E8 polytope known as the Gosset polytope.

Golden, Quasicrystalline, Chiral Packings of Tetrahedra

Since antiquity, the packing of convex shapes has been of great interest to many scientists and mathematicians. Recently, particular interest has been given to packings of three-dimensional tetrahedra. Dense packings of both crystalline and semi-quasicrystalline have been reported. It is interesting that a semiquasicrystalline packing of tetrahedra can emerge naturally within a thermodynamic simulation approach. However, this packing is not perfectly quasicrystalline and the packing density, while dense, is not maximal. Here we suggest that a "golden rotation" between tetrahedral facial junctions can arrange tetrahedra into a perfect quasicrystalline packing.

Calibration of the DAMPE Plastic Scintillator Detector and its on-orbit performance

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne apparatus for detecting the high-energy cosmic-rays like electrons, $γ$-rays, protons and heavy-ions. Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is the top-most sub-detector of the DAMPE. The PSD is designed to measure the charge of incident high-energy particles and it also serves as a veto detector for discriminating $γ$-rays from charged particles. In this paper, PSD on-orbit calibration procedure is described, which includes five steps of pedestal, dynode correlation, response to minimum-ionizing particles (MIPs), light attenuation function and energy reconstruction. A method for reconstructing the charge of incident high energy cosmic-ray particles is introduced. The detection efficiency of each PSD strip is verified to be above 99.5%, the total efficiency of the PSD for charged particles is above 99.99%.

The Novel Symmetry Constraint and Binary Nonlinearization of the Super Generalized Broer-Kaup Hierarchy with Self-consistent Sources and Conservation Laws

The super generalized Broer-Kaup(gBK) hierarchy and its super Hamiltonian structure are established based on a loop super Lie algebra and super-trace identity. Then the self-consistent sources, the conservation laws, the novel symmetry constraint and the binary nonlinearization of the super gBK hierarchy are generated, respectively. In addition, the integrals of motion required for Liouville integrability are explicitly given.

Riemann-Hilbert approach for a mixed coupled nonlinear Schrödinger system and its soliton solutions

In this work, we examine the integrable mixed coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (mCNLS) system, which describe the propagation of an optical pulse in a birefringent optical fiber. By the Riemann-Hilbert(RH) approach, the N-soliton solutions of the mCNLS system can be expressed explicitly when the jump matrix of a specific RH problem is a $3\times3$ unit matrix. As a special example, the expression of one- and two-soliton are displayed explicitly. More generally, as a promotion, an integrable generalized multi-component NLS system with its linear spectral problem be discussed. It is hoped that our results can help enrich the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of the mCNLS.

Riemann-Hilbert method and soliton solutions in the system of two-component Hirota equations

In this letter we examine the two-component Hirota (TH) equations which describes the pulse propagation in a coupled fiber with higher-order dispersion and self-steepening. As the TH equations is a complete integrable system, which admits a $3\times 3$ Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segu(AKNS)-type Lax pair, we obtain the general N-soliton solutions of the TH equations via the Riemann-Hilbert(RH) method when the jump matrix of a specific RH problem is a $3\times3$ unit matrix. As an example, the expression of one- and two-soliton are displayed explicitly.

Starobinsky Inflation and Dark Energy and Dark Matter Effects from Quasicrystal Like Spacetime Structures

The goal of this work on mathematical cosmology and geometric methods in modified gravity theories, MGTs, is to investigate Starobinsky-like inflation scenarios determined by gravitational and scalar field configurations mimicking quasicrystal, QC, like structures. Such spacetime aperiodic QCs are different from those discovered and studied in solid state physics but described by similar geometric methods. We prove that an inhomogeneous and locally anisotropic gravitational and matter field effective QC mixed continuous and discrete "aether" can be modeled by exact cosmological solutions in MGTs and Einstein gravity. The coefficients of corresponding generic off-diagonal metrics and generalized connections depend (in general) on all spacetime coordinates via generating and integration functions and certain smooth and discrete parameters. Imposing additional nonholonomic constraints, prescribing symmetries for generating functions and solving the boundary conditions for integration functions and constants, we can model various nontrivial torsion QC structures or extract cosmological Levi--Civita configurations with diagonal metrics reproducing de Sitter (inflationary) like and other types homogeneous inflation and acceleration phases. Finally, we speculate how various dark energy and dark matter effects can be modeled by off-diagonal interactions and deformations of a nontrivial QC like gravitational vacuum structure and analogous scalar matter fields.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in NOMA Heterogeneous Networks

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has attracted much recent attention owing to its capability for improving the system spectral efficiency in wireless communications. Deploying NOMA in heterogeneous network can satisfy users' explosive data traffic requirements, and NOMA will likely play an important role in the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication networks. However, NOMA brings new technical challenges on resource allocation due to the mutual cross-tier interference in heterogeneous networks. In this article, to study the tradeoff between data rate performance and energy consumption in NOMA, we examine the problem of energy-efficient user scheduling and power optimization in 5G NOMA heterogeneous networks. The energy-efficient user scheduling and power allocation schemes are introduced for the downlink 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for perfect and imperfect channel state information (CSI) respectively. Simulation results show that the resource allocation schemes can significantly increase the energy efficiency of 5G NOMA heterogeneous network for both cases of perfect CSI and imperfect CSI.

The Plastic Scintillator Detector at DAMPE

he DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a general purposed satellite-borne high energy $γ-$ray and cosmic ray detector, and among the scientific objectives of DAMPE are the searches for the origin of cosmic rays and an understanding of Dark Matter particles. As one of the four detectors in DAMPE, the Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) plays an important role in the particle charge measurement and the photons/electrons separation. The PSD has 82 modules, each consists of a long organic plastic scintillator bar and two PMTs at both ends for readout, in two layers and covers an overall active area larger than 82 cm $\times$ 82 cm. It can identify the charge states for relativistic ions from H to Fe, and the detector efficiency for Z=1 particles can reach 0.9999. The PSD has been successfully launched with DAMPE on Dec. 17, 2015. In this paper, the design, the assembly, the qualification tests of the PSD and some of the performance measured on the ground have been described in detail.

Temperature dependence of the plastic scintillator detector for DAMPE

The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is one of the main sub-detectors in the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) project. It will be operated over a large temperature range from -$10$ to $30^{\circ}$C, so the temperature effect of the whole detection system should be studied in detail. The temperature dependence of the PSD system is mainly contributed by the three parts: the plastic scintillator bar, the photomultiplier tube (PMT), and the Front End Electronics (FEE). These three parts have been studied in detail and the contribution of each part has been obtained and discussed. The temperature coefficient of the PMT is $-0.320(\pm0.033)\%/^{\circ}$C, and the coefficient of the plastic scintillator bar is $-0.036(\pm0.038)\%/^{\circ}$C. This result means that after subtracting the FEE pedestal, the variation of the signal amplitude of the PMT-scintillator system due to temperature mainly comes from the PMT, and the plastic scintillator bar is not sensitive to temperature over the operating range. Since the temperature effect cannot be ignored, the temperature dependence of the whole PSD has been also studied and a correction has been made to minimize this effect. The correction result shows that the effect of temperature on the signal amplitude of the PSD system can be suppressed.

The Unexpected Fractal Signatures in Fibonacci chains

Quasicrystals are fractal due to their self similar property. In this paper, a new cycloidal fractal signature possessing the cardioid shape in the Mandelbrot set is presented in the Fourier space of a Fibonacci chain with two lengths, L and S, where L/S = \{phi}. The corresponding pointwise dimension is 0.7. Various modifications, such as truncation from the head or tail, scrambling the orders of the sequence, and changing the ratio of the L and S, are done on the Fibonacci chain. The resulting patterns in the Fourier space show that that the fractal signature is very sensitive to changes in the Fibonacci order but not to the L/S ratio.

On the Observation and Simulation of Solar Coronal Twin Jets

We present the first observation, analysis and modeling of solar coronal twin jets, which occurred after a preceding jet. Detailed analysis on the kinetics of the preceding jet reveals its blowout-jet nature, which resembles the one studied in Liu et al. 2014. However the erupting process and kinetics of the twin jets appear to be different from the preceding one. In lack of the detailed information on the magnetic fields in the twin jet region, we instead use a numerical simulation using a three-dimensional (3D) MHD model as described in Fang et al. 2014, and find that in the simulation a pair of twin jets form due to reconnection between the ambient open fields and a highly twisted sigmoidal magnetic flux which is the outcome of the further evolution of the magnetic fields following the preceding blowout jet. Based on the similarity between the synthesized and observed emission we propose this mechanism as a possible explanation for the observed twin jets. Combining our observation and simulation, we suggest that with continuous energy transport from the subsurface convection zone into the corona, solar coronal twin jets could be generated in the same fashion addressed above.

A Novel Method to Study Bottom-up Visual Saliency and its Neural Mechanism

In this study, we propose a novel method to measure bottom-up saliency maps of natural images. In order to eliminate the influence of top-down signals, backward masking is used to make stimuli (natural images) subjectively invisible to subjects, however, the bottom-up saliency can still orient the subjects attention. To measure this orientation/attention effect, we adopt the cueing effect paradigm by deploying discrimination tasks at each location of an image, and measure the discrimination performance variation across the image as the attentional effect of the bottom-up saliency. Such attentional effects are combined to construct a final bottomup saliency map. Based on the proposed method, we introduce a new bottom-up saliency map dataset of natural images to benchmark computational models. We compare several state-of-the-art saliency models on the dataset. Moreover, the proposed paradigm is applied to investigate the neural basis of the bottom-up visual saliency map by analyzing psychophysical and fMRI experimental results. Our findings suggest that the bottom-up saliency maps of natural images are constructed in V1. It provides a strong scientific evidence to resolve the long standing dispute in neuroscience about where the bottom-up saliency map is constructed in human brain.

Design of a large dynamic range readout unit for the PSD detector of DAMPE

A large dynamic range is required by the Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) of DArk Matter Paricle Explorer (DAMPE), and a double-dynode readout has been developed. To verify this design, a prototype detector module has been constructed and tested with cosmic rays and heavy ion beams. The results match with the estimation and the readout unit could easily cover the required dynamic range.

Differential Rotation in Solar Convective Dynamo Simulations

We carry out a magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of convective dynamo in the rotating solar convective envelope driven by the solar radiative diffusive heat flux. The simulation is similar to that reported in Fan & Fang (2014) but with further reduced viscosity and magnetic diffusion. The resulting convective dynamo produces a large scale mean field that exhibits similar irregular cyclic behavior and polarity reversals, and self-consistently maintains a solar-like differential rotation. The main driver for the solar-like differential rotation (with faster rotating equator) is a net outward transport of angular momentum away from the rotation axis by the Reynolds stress, and we found that this transport is enhanced with reduced viscosity and magnetic diffusion.

Condensing magnons in a degenerate ferromagnetic spinor Bose gas

We observe the condensation of magnon excitations within an $F=1$ $^{87}$Rb spinor Bose-Einstein condensed gas. Magnons are pumped into a longitudinally spin-polarized gas, allowed to equilibrate to a non-degenerate distribution, and then cooled evaporatively at near-constant net longitudinal magnetization whereupon they condense. We find magnon condensation to be described quantitatively as the condensation of free particles in an effective potential that is uniform within the ferromagnetic condensate volume, evidenced by the number and distribution of magnons at the condensation transition. Transverse magnetization images reveal directly the spontaneous, inhomogeneous symmetry breaking by the magnon quasi-condensate, including signatures of Mermin-Ho spin textures that appear as phase singularities in the magnon condensate wavefunction.

A large area plastic scintillation detector with 4-corner-readout

A 760 $\times$ 760 $\times$ 30 mm$^3$ plastic scintillation detector viewed by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) from four corners has been developed, and the detector has been tested with cosmic rays and $γ$ rays. A position-independent effective time T$_{eff}$ has been found, indicating this detector can be used as a TOF detector. The hit position can also be reconstructed by the time from four corners. A TOF resolution of 236 ps and a position resolution of 48 mm have been achieved, and the detection efficiency has also been investigated.
