Spectral Dataset of Stripped-Envelope Supernovae from the Tsinghua Supernova Group

The extent of envelope stripping in the progenitor stars is directly reflected in the diversity of spectral features observed in stripped-envelope supernovae (SESNe). Through extensive spectral observation and analysis, we aim to clarify the statistical differences between the subclasses of SESNe. The Tsinghua Supernova group obtained 249 optical spectra of 62 SESNe during the years from 2010 to 2020, covering phases from $-$16 to over 190 days relative to maximum light. Most spectra were obtained during the photospheric phases after the supernova explosion. For each spectrum, the pseudo-equivalent widths (pEWs) and blueshift velocities of principal lines were measured. We further investigated the common spectral features by analysing their velocity and strength correlations across all subtypes. We identify the feature near 6200~\AA\ in SNe Ib as H$\mathrm{\alpha}$ through comparison with SNe IIb and Ic, which resolves inconsistent literature interpretations. Our finding reveals prevalent residual hydrogen in SNe Ib, further supporting a continuous stripping sequence from SNe IIb to Ib. We observe a trend in increasing velocity among different subtypes of stripped-envelope SNe, with SNe IIb exhibiting the lowest line velocities, followed by Ib, Ic, and Ic-BL. Typically, the O~I lines in SNe Ic/Ic-BL are stronger than those seen in SNe IIb/Ib. In nebular phases, the [Ca II] emission dominates over [O I] in SNe IIb/Ib while [O I] is stronger in SNe Ic, including the He-rich SN 2016coi. This spectral dichotomy implies that progenitors of SNe Ic (BL) have more massive CO cores and hence higher initial masses.

YanTian: An Application Platform for AI Global Weather Forecasting Models

To promote the practical application of AI Global Weather Forecasting Models (AIGWFM), we have developed an adaptable application platform named 'YanTian'. This platform enhances existing open-source AIGWFM with a suite of capability-enhancing modules and is constructed by a "loosely coupled" plug-in architecture. The goal of 'YanTian' is to address the limitations of current open-source AIGWFM in operational application, including improving local forecast accuracy, providing spatial high-resolution forecasts, increasing density of forecast intervals, and generating diverse products with the provision of AIGC capabilities. 'YianTian' also provides a simple, visualized user interface, allowing meteorologists easily access both basic and extended capabilities of the platform by simply configuring the platform UI. Users do not need to possess the complex artificial intelligence knowledge and the coding techniques. Additionally, 'YianTian' can be deployed on a PC with GPUs. We hope 'YianTian' can facilitate the operational widespread adoption of AIGWFMs.

A spectral data release for 104 Type II Supernovae from the Tsinghua Supernova Group

We present 206 unpublished optical spectra of 104 type II supernovae obtained by the Xinglong 2.16m telescope and Lijiang 2.4m telescope during the period from 2011 to 2018, spanning the phases from about 1 to 200 days after the SN explosion. The spectral line identifications, evolution of line velocities and pseudo equivalent widths, as well as correlations between some important spectral parameters are presented. Our sample displays a large range in expansion velocities. For instance, the Fe~{\sc ii} $5169$ velocities measured from spectra at $t\sim 50$ days after the explosion vary from ${\rm 2000\ km\ s^{-1}}$ to ${\rm 5500\ km\ s^{-1}}$, with an average value of ${\rm 3872 \pm 949\ km\ s^{-1}}$. Power-law functions can be used to fit the velocity evolution, with the power-law exponent quantifying the velocity decline rate. We found an anticorrelation existing between H$\beta$ velocity at mid-plateau phase and its velocity decay exponent, SNe II with higher velocities tending to have smaller velocity decay rate. Moreover, we noticed that the velocity decay rate inferred from the Balmer lines (i.e., H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$) have moderate correlations with the ratio of absorption to emission for H$\alpha$ (a/e). In our sample, two objects show possibly flash-ionized features at early phases. Besides, we noticed that multiple high-velocity components may exist on the blue side of hydrogen lines of SN 2013ab, possibly suggesting that these features arise from complex line forming region. All our spectra can be found in WISeREP and Zenodo.

A statistical resolution measure of fluorescence microscopy with finite photons

First discovered by Ernest Abbe in 1873, the resolution limit of a far-field microscope is considered determined by the numerical aperture and wavelength of light, approximately $λ$/2NA. With the advent of modern fluorescence microscopy and nanoscopy methods over the last century, it is recognized that Abbe's resolution definition alone could not solely characterize the resolving power of the microscope system. To determine the practical resolution of a fluorescence microscope, photon noise remains one essential factor yet to be incorporated in a statistics-based theoretical framework. Techniques such as confocal allow trading photon noise in gaining its resolution limit, which may increase or worsen the resolvability towards fluorescently tagged targets. Proposed as a theoretical measure of fluorescence microscopes' resolving power with finite photons, we quantify the resolvability of periodic structures in fluorescence microscopy systems considering both the diffraction limit and photon statistics. Using the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound of a parametric target, the resulting precision lower bound establishes a practical measure of the theoretical resolving power for various modern fluorescence microscopy methods in the presence of noise.

Meteorological Satellite Images Prediction Based on Deep Multi-scales Extrapolation Fusion

Meteorological satellite imagery is critical for meteorologists. The data have played an important role in monitoring and analyzing weather and climate changes. However, satellite imagery is a kind of observation data and exists a significant time delay when transmitting the data back to Earth. It is important to make accurate predictions for meteorological satellite images, especially the nowcasting prediction up to 2 hours ahead. In recent years, there has been growing interest in the research of nowcasting prediction applications of weather radar images based on deep learning. Compared to the weather radar images prediction problem, the main challenge for meteorological satellite images prediction is the large-scale observation areas and therefore the large sizes of the observation products. Here we present a deep multi-scales extrapolation fusion method, to address the challenge of the meteorological satellite images nowcasting prediction. First, we downsample the original satellite images dataset with large size to several images datasets with smaller resolutions, then we use a deep spatiotemporal sequences prediction method to generate the multi-scales prediction images with different resolutions separately. Second, we fuse the multi-scales prediction results to the targeting prediction images with the original size by a conditional generative adversarial network. The experiments based on the FY-4A meteorological satellite data show that the proposed method can generate realistic prediction images that effectively capture the evolutions of the weather systems in detail. We believe that the general idea of this work can be potentially applied to other spatiotemporal sequence prediction tasks with a large size.

SN 2015bf: a fast declining type II supernova with flash-ionised signatures

We present optical and ultraviolet photometry, as well as optical spectra, for the type II supernova (SN) 2015bf. Our observations cover the phases from $\sim 2$ to $\sim 200$ d after explosion. The first spectrum is characterised by a blue continuum with a blackbody temperature of $\sim 24,000$K and flash-ionised emission lines. After about one week, the spectra of SN 2015bf evolve like those of a regular SN II. From the luminosity of the narrow emission component of H$α$, we deduce that the mass-loss rate is larger than $\sim 3.7\times10^{-3}\,{\rm M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}$. The disappearance of the flash features in the first week after explosion indicates that the circumstellar material is confined within $\sim 6 \times 10^{14}$ cm. Thus, we suggest that the progenitor of SN 2015bf experienced violent mass loss shortly before the supernova explosion. The multiband light curves show that SN 2015bf has a high peak luminosity with an absolute visual magnitude $M_V = -18.11 \pm 0.08$ mag and a fast post-peak decline with a $V$-band decay of $1.22 \pm 0.09$ mag within $\sim 50$ d after maximum light. Moreover, the $R$-band tail luminosity of SN 2015bf is fainter than that of SNe~II with similar peak by 1--2 mag, suggesting a small amount of ${\rm ^{56}Ni}$ ($\sim 0.009\,{\rm M_\odot}$) synthesised during the explosion. Such a low nickel mass indicates that the progenitor of SN 2015bf could be a super-asymptotic-giant-branch star that collapsed owing to electron capture.

SN 2018zd: An Unusual Stellar Explosion as Part of the Diverse Type II Supernova Landscape

We present extensive observations of SN 2018zd covering the first $\sim450$\,d after the explosion. This SN shows a possible shock-breakout signal $\sim3.6$\,hr after the explosion in the unfiltered light curve, and prominent flash-ionisation spectral features within the first week. The unusual photospheric temperature rise (rapidly from $\sim 12,000$\,K to above 18,000\,K) within the earliest few days suggests that the ejecta were continuously heated. Both the significant temperature rise and the flash spectral features can be explained with the interaction of the SN ejecta with the massive stellar wind ($0.18^{+0.05}_{-0.10}\, \rm M_{\odot}$), which accounts for the luminous peak ($L_{\rm max} = [1.36\pm 0.63] \times 10^{43}\, \rm erg\,s^{-1}$) of SN 2018zd. The luminous peak and low expansion velocity ($v \approx 3300$ km s$^{-1}$) make SN 2018zd to be like a member of the LLEV (luminous SNe II with low expansion velocities) events originated due to circumstellar interaction. The relatively fast post-peak decline allows a classification of SN 2018zd as a transition event morphologically linking SNe~IIP and SNe~IIL. In the radioactive-decay phase, SN 2018zd experienced a significant flux drop and behaved more like a low-luminosity SN~IIP both spectroscopically and photometrically. This contrast indicates that circumstellar interaction plays a vital role in modifying the observed light curves of SNe~II. Comparing nebular-phase spectra with model predictions suggests that SN 2018zd arose from a star of $\sim 12\,\rm M_{\odot}$. Given the relatively small amount of $^{56}$Ni ($0.013 - 0.035 \rm M_{\odot}$), the massive stellar wind, and the faint X-ray radiation, the progenitor of SN 2018zd could be a massive asymptotic giant branch star which collapsed owing to electron capture.

Application of Structural Similarity Analysis of Visually Salient Areas and Hierarchical Clustering in the Screening of Similar Wireless Capsule Endoscopic Images

Small intestinal capsule endoscopy is the mainstream method for inspecting small intestinal lesions, but a single small intestinal capsule endoscopy will produce 60,000 - 120,000 images, the majority of which are similar and have no diagnostic value. It takes 2 - 3 hours for doctors to identify lesions from these images. This is time-consuming and increase the probability of misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis since doctors are likely to experience visual fatigue while focusing on a large number of similar images for an extended period of time.In order to solve these problems, we proposed a similar wireless capsule endoscope (WCE) image screening method based on structural similarity analysis and the hierarchical clustering of visually salient sub-image blocks. The similarity clustering of images was automatically identified by hierarchical clustering based on the hue, saturation, value (HSV) spatial color characteristics of the images, and the keyframe images were extracted based on the structural similarity of the visually salient sub-image blocks, in order to accurately identify and screen out similar small intestinal capsule endoscopic images. Subsequently, the proposed method was applied to the capsule endoscope imaging workstation. After screening out similar images in the complete data gathered by the Type I OMOM Small Intestinal Capsule Endoscope from 52 cases covering 17 common types of small intestinal lesions, we obtained a lesion recall of 100% and an average similar image reduction ratio of 76%. With similar images screened out, the average play time of the OMOM image workstation was 18 minutes, which greatly reduced the time spent by doctors viewing the images.

Observations of Type Ia Supernova 2014J for Nearly 900 Days and Constraints on Its Progenitor System

We present extensive ground-based and $Hubble~Space~Telescope$ ($HST$) photometry of the highly reddened, very nearby type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2014J in M82, covering the phases from 9 days before to about 900 days after the $B$-band maximum. SN 2014J is similar to other normal SNe Ia near the maximum light, but it shows flux excess in the $B$ band in the early nebular phase. This excess flux emission can be due to light scattering by some structures of circumstellar materials located at a few 10$^{17}$ cm, consistent with a single degenerate progenitor system or a double degenerate progenitor system with mass outflows in the final evolution or magnetically driven winds around the binary system. At t$\sim$+300 to $\sim$+500 days past the $B$-band maximum, the light curve of SN 2014J shows a faster decline relative to the $^{56}$Ni decay. Such a feature can be attributed to the significant weakening of the emission features around [Fe III] $λ$4700 and [Fe II] $λ$5200 rather than the positron escape as previously suggested. Analysis of the $HST$ images taken at t$>$600 days confirms that the luminosity of SN 2014J maintains a flat evolution at the very late phase. Fitting the late-time pseudo-bolometric light curve with radioactive decay of $^{56}$Ni, $^{57}$Ni and $^{55}$Fe isotopes, we obtain the mass ratio $^{57}$Ni/$^{56}$Ni as $0.035 \pm 0.011$, which is consistent with the corresponding value predicted from the 2D and 3D delayed-detonation models. Combined with early-time analysis, we propose that delayed-detonation through single degenerate scenario is most likely favored for SN 2014J.

Observations of A Fast-Expanding and UV-Bright Type Ia Supernova SN 2013gs

In this paper, we present extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013gs discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. The photometric observations in the optical show that the light curves of SN 2013gs is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{B}$ = $-$19.25 $\pm$ 0.15 mag and a post-maximum decline rate $Δ$m$_{15}$(B) = 1.00 $ \pm $ 0.05 mag. \emph{Gehrels Swift} UVOT observations indicate that SN 2013gs shows unusually strong UV emission (especially in the $uvw1$ band) at around the maximum light (M$_{uvw1}$ $\sim$ $-$18.9 mag). The SN is characterized by relatively weak Fe~{\sc ii} {\sc iii} absorptions at $\sim$ 5000Å in the early spectra and a larger expansion velocity ($v_{Si}$ $\sim$ 13,000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light) than the normal-velocity SNe Ia. We discuss the relation between the $uvw1-v$ color and some observables, including Si~{\sc ii} velocity, line strength of Si~{\sc ii} $λ$6355, Fe~{\sc ii}/{\sc iii} lines and $Δm_{15}$(B). Compared to other fast-expanding SNe Ia, SN 2013gs exhibits Si and Fe absorption lines with similar strength and bluer $uvw1-v$ color. We briefly discussed the origin of the observed UV dispersion of SNe Ia.

Seeing Double: ASASSN-18bt Exhibits a Two-Component Rise in the Early-Time K2 Light Curve

On 2018 Feb. 4.41, the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) discovered ASASSN-18bt in the K2 Campaign 16 field. With a redshift of z=0.01098 and a peak apparent magnitude of B_{max}=14.31, ASASSN-18bt is the nearest and brightest SNe Ia yet observed by the Kepler spacecraft. Here we present the discovery of ASASSN-18bt, the K2 light curve, and pre-discovery data from ASAS-SN and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The K2 early-time light curve has an unprecedented 30-minute cadence and photometric precision for an SN~Ia light curve, and it unambiguously shows a ~4 day nearly linear phase followed by a steeper rise. Thus, ASASSN-18bt joins a growing list of SNe Ia whose early light curves are not well described by a single power law. We show that a double-power-law model fits the data reasonably well, hinting that two physical processes must be responsible for the observed rise. However, we find that current models of the interaction with a non-degenerate companion predict an abrupt rise and cannot adequately explain the initial, slower linear phase. Instead, we find that existing, published models with shallow 56Ni are able to span the observed behavior and, with tuning, may be able to reproduce the ASASSN-18bt light curve. Regardless, more theoretical work is needed to satisfactorily model this and other early-time SNe~Ia light curves. Finally, we use Swift X-ray non-detections to constrain the presence of circumstellar material (CSM) at much larger distances and lower densities than possible with the optical light curve. For a constant density CSM these non-detections constrain rho<4.5 * 10^5 cm^-3 at a radius of 4 *10^15 cm from the progenitor star. Assuming a wind-like environment, we place mass-loss limits of Mdot< 8 * 10^-6 M_sun yr^-1 for v_w=100 km s^-1, ruling out some symbiotic progenitor systems.

CNN-VWII: An Efficient Approach for Large-Scale Video Retrieval by Image Queries

This paper aims to solve the problem of large-scale video retrieval by a query image. Firstly, we define the problem of top-$k$ image to video query. Then, we combine the merits of convolutional neural networks(CNN for short) and Bag of Visual Word(BoVW for short) module to design a model for video frames information extraction and representation. In order to meet the requirements of large-scale video retrieval, we proposed a visual weighted inverted index(VWII for short) and related algorithm to improve the efficiency and accuracy of retrieval process. Comprehensive experiments show that our proposed technique achieves substantial improvements (up to an order of magnitude speed up) over the state-of-the-art techniques with similar accuracy.

SVS-JOIN: Efficient Spatial Visual Similarity Join over Multimedia Data

In the big data era, massive amount of multimedia data with geo-tags has been generated and collected by mobile smart devices equipped with mobile communications module and position sensor module. This trend has put forward higher request on large-scale of geo-multimedia data retrieval. Spatial similarity join is one of the important problem in the area of spatial database. Previous works focused on textual document with geo-tags, rather than geo-multimedia data such as geo-images. In this paper, we study a novel search problem named spatial visual similarity join (SVS-JOIN for short), which aims to find similar geo-image pairs in both the aspects of geo-location and visual content. We propose the definition of SVS-JOIN at the first time and present how to measure geographical similarity and visual similarity. Then we introduce a baseline inspired by the method for textual similarity join and a extension named SVS-JOIN$_G$ which applies spatial grid strategy to improve the efficiency. To further improve the performance of search, we develop a novel approach called SVS-JOIN$_Q$ which utilizes a quadtree and a global inverted index. Experimental evaluations on real geo-image datasets demonstrate that our solution has a really high performance.

This trend has put forward higher requirements and greater challenges on massive multimedia data retrieval. In this paper, we investigate the problem of image similarity measurement which is used to lots of applications. At first we propose the definition of similarity measurement of images and the related notions. Based on it we present a novel basic method of similarity measurement named SMIN. To improve the performance of calculation, we propose a novel indexing structure called SMI Temp Index (SMII for short). Besides, we establish an index of potential similar visual words off-line to solve to problem that the index cannot be reused. Experimental evaluations on two real image datasets demonstrate that our solution outperforms state-of-the-art method.

Efficient Region of Visual Interests Search for Geo-multimedia Data

With the proliferation of online social networking services and mobile smart devices equipped with mobile communications module and position sensor module, massive amount of multimedia data has been collected, stored and shared. This trend has put forward higher request on massive multimedia data retrieval. In this paper, we investigate a novel spatial query named region of visual interests query (RoVIQ), which aims to search users containing geographical information and visual words. Three baseline methods are presented to introduce how to exploit existing techniques to address this problem. Then we propose the definition of this query and related notions at the first time. To improve the performance of query, we propose a novel spatial indexing structure called quadtree based inverted visual index which is a combination of quadtree, inverted index and visual words. Based on it, we design a efficient search algorithm named region of visual interests search to support RoVIQ. Experimental evaluations on real geo-image datasets demonstrate that our solution outperforms state-of-the-art method.

SN 2014J in M82: New Insights On the Spectral Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae

We present extensive spectroscopic observations for one of the closest type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), SN 2014J discovered in M82, ranging from 10.4 days before to 473.2 days after B-band maximum light. The diffuse interstellar band (DIB) features detected in a high-resolution spectrum allow an estimate of line-of-sight extinction as Av=1.9+/-0.6 mag. Spectroscopically, SN 2014J can be put into the high-velocity (HV) subgroup in Wang's classification with a velocity of Si~II 6355 at maximum light as about 12200 km/s, but has a low velocity gradient (LVG, following Benetti's classification) as 41+/-2 km/s/day, which is inconsistent with the trend that HV SNe Ia generally have larger velocity gradients. We find that the HV SNe Ia with LVGs tend to have relatively stronger Si III (at ~4400 Angstrom) absorptions in early spectra, larger ratios of S II 5468 to S II 5640, and weaker Si II 5972 absorptions compared to their counterparts with similar velocities but high velocity gradients. This shows that the HV+LVG subgroup of SNe Ia may have intrinsically higher photospheric temperature, which indicates that their progenitors may experience more complete burning in the explosions relative to the typical HV SNe Ia.

Hierarchical One Permutation Hashing: Efficient Multimedia Near Duplicate Detection

With advances in multimedia technologies and the proliferation of smart phone, digital cameras, storage devices, there are a rapidly growing massive amount of multimedia data collected in many applications such as multimedia retrieval and management system, in which the data element is composed of text, image, video and audio. Consequently, the study of multimedia near duplicate detection has attracted significant concern from research organizations and commercial communities. Traditional solution minwish hashing (\minwise) faces two challenges: expensive preprocessing time and lower comparison speed. Thus, this work first introduce a hashing method called one permutation hashing (\oph) to shun the costly preprocessing time. Based on \oph, a more efficient strategy group based one permutation hashing (\goph) is developed to deal with the high comparison time. Based on the fact that the similarity of most multimedia data is not very high, this work design an new hashing method namely hierarchical one permutation hashing (\hoph) to further improve the performance. Comprehensive experiments on real multimedia datasets clearly show that with similar accuracy \hoph is five to seven times faster than

Hierarchical Information Quadtree: Efficient Spatial Temporal Image Search for Multimedia Stream

Massive amount of multimedia data that contain times- tamps and geographical information are being generated at an unprecedented scale in many emerging applications such as photo sharing web site and social networks applications. Due to their importance, a large body of work has focused on efficiently computing various spatial image queries. In this paper,we study the spatial temporal image query which considers three important constraints during the search including time recency, spatial proximity and visual relevance. A novel index structure, namely Hierarchical Information Quadtree(\hiq), to efficiently insert/delete spatial temporal images with high arrive rates. Base on \hiq an efficient algorithm is developed to support spatial temporal image query. We show via extensive experimentation with real spatial databases clearly demonstrate the efficiency of our methods.
