Multi-task Learning based Pre-trained Language Model for Code Completion

Code completion is one of the most useful features in the Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), which can accelerate software development by suggesting the next probable token based on the contextual code in real-time. Recent studies have shown that statistical language modeling techniques can improve the performance of code completion tools through learning from large-scale software repositories. However, these models suffer from two major drawbacks: a) Existing research uses static embeddings, which map a word to the same vector regardless of its context. The differences in the meaning of a token in varying contexts are lost when each token is associated with a single representation; b) Existing language model based code completion models perform poor on completing identifiers, and the type information of the identifiers is ignored in most of these models. To address these challenges, in this paper, we develop a multi-task learning based pre-trained language model for code understanding and code generation with a Transformer-based neural architecture. We pre-train it with hybrid objective functions that incorporate both code understanding and code generation tasks. Then we fine-tune the pre-trained model on code completion. During the completion, our model does not directly predict the next token. Instead, we adopt multi-task learning to predict the token and its type jointly and utilize the predicted type to assist the token prediction. Experiments results on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

Delay-Constrained Topology-Transparent Distributed Scheduling for MANETs

Transparent topology is common in many mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) such as vehicle ad hoc networks (VANETs), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks due to their decentralization and mobility nature. There are many existing works on distributed scheduling scheme design for topology-transparent MANETs. Most of them focus on delay-unconstrained settings. However, with the proliferation of real-time applications over wireless communications, it becomes more and more important to support delay-constrained traffic in MANETs. In such applications, each packet has a given hard deadline: if it is not delivered before its deadline, its validity will expire and it will be removed from the system. This feature is fundamentally different from the traditional delay-unconstrained one. In this paper, we for the first time investigate distributed scheduling schemes for a topology-transparent MANET to support delay-constrained traffic. We analyze and compare probabilistic ALOHA scheme and deterministic sequence schemes, including the conventional time division multiple access (TDMA), the Galois field (GF) sequence scheme proposed in \cite{chlamtac1994making}, and the combination sequence scheme that we propose for a special type of sparse network topology. We use both theoretical analysis and empirical simulations to compare all these schemes and summarize the conditions under which different individual schemes perform best.

Continuous-time Markov-switching GARCH Process with Robust and Efficient State Path and Volatility Estimation

We propose a continuous-time Markov-switching generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (COMS-GARCH) process for handling irregularly spaced time series (TS) with multiple volatilities states. We employ a Gibbs sampler in the Bayesian framework to estimate the COMS-GARCH model parameters, the latent state path and volatilities. To improve the inferential robustness and computational efficiency for obtaining the maximum a posteriori estimates for the state path and volatilities, we suggest a multi-path sampling scheme and incorporate the Bernoulli noise injection in the computational algorithm. We provide theoretical justifications for the improved stability and robustness with the Bernoulli noise injection through the concept of ensemble learning and the low sensitivity of the objective function to external perturbation in the TS. We apply the proposed COMS-GARCH process and the computational procedure to simulated TS, a real currency exchange rate TS, and a real blood volume amplitude TS. The empirical results demonstrate that the COMS-GARCH process and the computational procedure are able to predict volatility regimes and volatilities in a TS with satisfactory accuracy.

Fully connected entanglement-based quantum communication network without trusted node

Quantum communication is developed owing to the theoretically proven security of quantum mechanics, which may become the main technique in future information security. However, most studies and implementations are limited to two or several parties. Herein, we propose a fully connected quantum communication network without a trusted node for a large number of users. Using flexible wavelength demultiplex/multiplex and space multiplex technologies, 40 users are fully connected simultaneously without a trusted node by a broadband energy-time entangled photon pair source. This network architecture may be widely deployed in real scenarios such as companies, schools, and communities owing to its simplicity, scalability, and high efficiency.

Contextual Bandits with Side-Observations

We investigate contextual bandits in the presence of side-observations across arms in order to design recommendation algorithms for users connected via social networks. Users in social networks respond to their friends' activity, and hence provide information about each other's preferences. In our model, when a learning algorithm recommends an article to a user, not only does it observe his/her response (e.g. an ad click), but also the side-observations, i.e., the response of his neighbors if they were presented with the same article. We model these observation dependencies by a graph $\mathcal{G}$ in which nodes correspond to users, and edges correspond to social links. We derive a problem/instance-dependent lower-bound on the regret of any consistent algorithm. We propose an optimization (linear programming) based data-driven learning algorithm that utilizes the structure of $\mathcal{G}$ in order to make recommendations to users and show that it is asymptotically optimal, in the sense that its regret matches the lower-bound as the number of rounds $T\to\infty$. We show that this asymptotically optimal regret is upper-bounded as $O\left(|χ(\mathcal{G})|\log T\right)$, where $|χ(\mathcal{G})|$ is the domination number of $\mathcal{G}$. In contrast, a naive application of the existing learning algorithms results in $O\left(N\log T\right)$ regret, where $N$ is the number of users.

Multi-Armed Bandits with Dependent Arms

We study a variant of the classical multi-armed bandit problem (MABP) which we call as Multi-Armed Bandits with dependent arms. More specifically, multiple arms are grouped together to form a cluster, and the reward distributions of arms belonging to the same cluster are known functions of an unknown parameter that is a characteristic of the cluster. Thus, pulling an arm $i$ not only reveals information about its own reward distribution, but also about all those arms that share the same cluster with arm $i$. This "correlation" amongst the arms complicates the exploration-exploitation trade-off that is encountered in the MABP because the observation dependencies allow us to test simultaneously multiple hypotheses regarding the optimality of an arm. We develop learning algorithms based on the UCB principle which utilize these additional side observations appropriately while performing exploration-exploitation trade-off. We show that the regret of our algorithms grows as $O(K\log T)$, where $K$ is the number of clusters. In contrast, for an algorithm such as the vanilla UCB that is optimal for the classical MABP and does not utilize these dependencies, the regret scales as $O(M\log T)$ where $M$ is the number of arms.

Differentially Private Data Release via Statistical Election to Partition Sequentially

Differential Privacy (DP) formalizes privacy in mathematical terms and provides a robust concept for privacy protection. DIfferentially Private Data Synthesis (DIPS) techniques produce and release synthetic individual-level data in the DP framework. One key challenge to developing DIPS methods is preservation of the statistical utility of synthetic data, especially in high-dimensional settings. We propose a new DIPS approach, STatistical Election to Partition Sequentially (STEPS) that partitions data by attributes according to their importance ranks according to either a practical or statistical importance measure. STEPS aims to achieve better original information preservation for the attributes with higher importance ranks and produce thus more useful synthetic data overall. We present an algorithm to implement the STEPS procedure and employ the privacy budget composability to ensure the overall privacy cost is controlled at the pre-specified value. We apply the STEPS procedure to both simulated data and the 2000-2012 Current Population Survey youth voter data. The results suggest STEPS can better preserve the population-level information and the original information for some analyses compared to PrivBayes, a modified Uniform histogram approach, and the flat Laplace sanitizer.

Selective Cascade of Residual ExtraTrees

We propose a novel tree-based ensemble method named Selective Cascade of Residual ExtraTrees (SCORE). SCORE draws inspiration from representation learning, incorporates regularized regression with variable selection features, and utilizes boosting to improve prediction and reduce generalization errors. We also develop a variable importance measure to increase the explainability of SCORE. Our computer experiments show that SCORE provides comparable or superior performance in prediction against ExtraTrees, random forest, gradient boosting machine, and neural networks; and the proposed variable importance measure for SCORE is comparable to studied benchmark methods. Finally, the predictive performance of SCORE remains stable across hyper-parameter values, suggesting potential robustness to hyperparameter specification.

Giant gate-tunability of complex refractive index in semiconducting carbon nanotubes

Electrically-tunable optical properties in materials are desirable for many applications ranging from displays to lasing and optical communication. In most two-dimensional thin-films and other quantum confined materials, these constants have been measured accurately. However, the optical constants of single wall nanotubes (SWCNT) as a function of electrostatic tuning are yet to be measured due to lack of electronic purity and spatial homogeneity over large areas. Here, we measure the basic optical constants of ultrathin high-purity (>99%) semiconducting single wall carbon nanotube (s-SWCNT) films with spectroscopic ellipsometry. We extract the gate-tunable complex refractive index of s-SWCNT films and observe giant modulation of the real refractive index (~11.2% or an absolute value of >0.2) and extinction coefficient (~11.6%) in the near-infrared (IR) region (1.3-1.55 μm) induced by the applied electric field significantly higher than all existing electro-optic semiconductors in this wavelength range. We further design a multilayer IR reflection phase modulator stack by combining s-SWCNT and monolayer MoS2 heterostructures that can attain >45° reflection phase modulation at 1600 nm wavelength for < 200 nm total stack thickness. Our results highlight s-SWCNT as a promising material system for infrared photonics and electro-optics in telecommunication applications.

Schedule Sequence Design for Broadcast in Multi-channel Ad Hoc Networks

We consider a single-hop ad hoc network in which each node aims to broadcast packets to its neighboring nodes by using multiple slotted, TDD collision channels. There is no cooperation among the nodes. To ensure successful broadcast, we propose to pre-assign each node a periodic sequence to schedule transmissions and receptions at each time slot. These sequences are referred to as schedule sequences. Since each node starts its transmission schedule independently, there exist relative time offsets among the schedule sequences they use. Our objective is to design schedule sequences such that each node can transmit at least one packet to each of its neighbors successfully within a common period, no matter what the time offsets are. The sequence period should be designed as short as possible. In this paper, we analyze the lower bound on sequence period, and propose a sequence construction method by which the period can achieve the same order as the lower bound. We also consider the random scheme in which each node transmits or receives on a channel at each time slot with a pre-determined probability. The frame length and broadcast completion time under different schemes are compared by numerical studies.

Nonlinear twistoptics at symmetry-broken interfaces

Broken symmetries induce strong nonlinear optical responses in materials and at interfaces. Twist angle can give complete control over the presence or lack of inversion symmetry at a crystal interface, and is thus an appealing knob for tuning nonlinear optical systems. In contrast to conventional nonlinear crystals with rigid lattices, the weak interlayer coupling in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures allows for arbitrary selection of twist angle, making nanomechanical manipulation of fundamental interfacial symmetry possible within a single device. Here we report highly tunable second harmonic generation (SHG) from nanomechanically rotatable stacks of bulk hexagonal boron nitride (BN) crystals, and introduce the term twistoptics to describe studies of optical properties in dynamically twistable vdW systems. We observe SHG intensity modulated by a factor of more than 50, polarization patterns determined by moiré interface symmetry, and enhanced conversion efficiency for bulk crystals by stacking multiple pieces of BN joined by symmetry-broken interfaces. Our study provides a foundation for compact twistoptics architectures aimed at efficient, scalable, and tunable frequency-conversion, and demonstrates SHG as a robust probe of buried vdW interfaces.

A Partially Observable MDP Approach for Sequential Testing for Infectious Diseases such as COVID-19

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is unfolding as a major international crisis whose influence extends to every aspect of our daily lives. Effective testing allows infected individuals to be quarantined, thus reducing the spread of COVID-19, saving countless lives, and helping to restart the economy safely and securely. Developing a good testing strategy can be greatly aided by contact tracing that provides health care providers information about the whereabouts of infected patients in order to determine whom to test. Countries that have been more successful in corralling the virus typically use a ``test, treat, trace, test'' strategy that begins with testing individuals with symptoms, traces contacts of positively tested individuals via a combinations of patient memory, apps, WiFi, GPS, etc., followed by testing their contacts, and repeating this procedure. The problem is that such strategies are myopic and do not efficiently use the testing resources. This is especially the case with COVID-19, where symptoms may show up several days after the infection (or not at all, there is evidence to suggest that many COVID-19 carriers are asymptotic, but may spread the virus). Such greedy strategies, miss out population areas where the virus may be dormant and flare up in the future. In this paper, we show that the testing problem can be cast as a sequential learning-based resource allocation problem with constraints, where the input to the problem is provided by a time-varying social contact graph obtained through various contact tracing tools. We then develop efficient learning strategies that minimize the number of infected individuals. These strategies are based on policy iteration and look-ahead rules. We investigate fundamental performance bounds, and ensure that our solution is robust to errors in the input graph as well as in the tests themselves.

A modified axiomatic foundation of the analytic hierarchy process

This paper reports a modified axiomatic foundation of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), where the reciprocal property of paired comparisons is broken. The novel concept of reciprocal symmetry breaking is proposed to characterize the considered situation without reciprocal property. It is found that the uncertainty experienced by the decision maker can be naturally incorporated into the modified axioms. Some results are derived from the new axioms involving the new concept of approximate consistency and the method of eliciting priorities. The phenomenon of ranking reversal is revisited from a theoretical viewpoint under the modified axiomatic foundation. The situations without ranking reversal are addressed and called ranking equilibrium. The likelihood of ranking reversal is captured by introducing a possibility degree index based on the Kendall's coefficient of concordance. The modified axioms and the derived facts form a novel operational basis of the AHP choice model under some uncertainty. The observations reveal that a more flexible expression of decision information could be accepted as compared to the judgments with reciprocal property.

A Statistical Overview on Data Privacy

The eruption of big data with the increasing collection and processing of vast volumes and variety of data have led to breakthrough discoveries and innovation in science, engineering, medicine, commerce, criminal justice, and national security that would not have been possible in the past. While there are many benefits to the collection and usage of big data, there are also growing concerns among the general public on what personal information is collected and how it is used. In addition to legal policies and regulations, technological tools and statistical strategies also exist to promote and safeguard individual privacy, while releasing and sharing useful population-level information. In this overview, I introduce some of these approaches, as well as the existing challenges and opportunities in statistical data privacy research and applications to better meet the practical needs of privacy protection and information sharing.

Privacy Risk and Preservation For COVID-19 Contact Tracing Apps

Contact tracing in the COVID-19 pandemic is key to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. Countries and regions around the world have developed and deployed or are considering adopting contact-tracing software or mobile apps. While contact tracing apps and software play an important role in the pandemic, red flags have been raised regarding the privacy risk associated with contact tracing. In this short paper, we provide an overview on the GPS and Bluetooth based contact-tracing apps in the framework of both centralized and decentralized models, examine the associated privacy risk and the effectiveness of the privacy-preserving measures adopted in different apps.

A Self-Attentional Neural Architecture for Code Completion with Multi-Task Learning

Code completion, one of the most useful features in the Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), can accelerate software development by suggesting the libraries, APIs, and method names in real-time. Recent studies have shown that statistical language models can improve the performance of code completion tools through learning from large-scale software repositories. However, these models suffer from three major drawbacks: a) The hierarchical structural information of the programs is not fully utilized in the program's representation; b) In programs, the semantic relationships can be very long. Existing recurrent neural networks based language models are not sufficient to model the long-term dependency. c) Existing approaches perform a specific task in one model, which leads to the underuse of the information from related tasks. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose a self-attentional neural architecture for code completion with multi-task learning. To utilize the hierarchical structural information of the programs, we present a novel method that considers the path from the predicting node to the root node. To capture the long-term dependency in the input programs, we adopt a self-attentional architecture based network as the base language model. To enable the knowledge sharing between related tasks, we creatively propose a Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework to learn two related tasks in code completion jointly. Experiments on three real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model when compared with state-of-the-art methods.

MultiResolution Attention Extractor for Small Object Detection

Small objects are difficult to detect because of their low resolution and small size. The existing small object detection methods mainly focus on data preprocessing or narrowing the differences between large and small objects. Inspired by human vision "attention" mechanism, we exploit two feature extraction methods to mine the most useful information of small objects. Both methods are based on multiresolution feature extraction. We initially design and explore the soft attention method, but we find that its convergence speed is slow. Then we present the second method, an attention-based feature interaction method, called a MultiResolution Attention Extractor (MRAE), showing significant improvement as a generic feature extractor in small object detection. After each building block in the vanilla feature extractor, we append a small network to generate attention weights followed by a weighted-sum operation to get the final attention maps. Our attention-based feature extractor is 2.0 times the AP of the "hard" attention counterpart (plain architecture) on the COCO small object detection benchmark, proving that MRAE can capture useful location and contextual information through adaptive learning.

Deep Learning and Bayesian Deep Learning Based Gender Prediction in Multi-Scale Brain Functional Connectivity

Brain gender differences have been known for a long time and are the possible reason for many psychological, psychiatric and behavioral differences between males and females. Predicting genders from brain functional connectivity (FC) can build the relationship between brain activities and gender, and extracting important gender related FC features from the prediction model offers a way to investigate the brain gender difference. Current predictive models applied to gender prediction demonstrate good accuracies, but usually extract individual functional connections instead of connectivity patterns in the whole connectivity matrix as features. In addition, current models often omit the effect of the input brain FC scale on prediction and cannot give any model uncertainty information. Hence, in this study we propose to predict gender from multiple scales of brain FC with deep learning, which can extract full FC patterns as features. We further develop the understanding of the feature extraction mechanism in deep neural network (DNN) and propose a DNN feature ranking method to extract the highly important features based on their contributions to the prediction. Moreover, we apply Bayesian deep learning to the brain FC gender prediction, which as a probabilistic model can not only make accurate predictions but also generate model uncertainty for each prediction. Experiments were done on the high-quality Human Connectome Project S1200 release dataset comprising the resting state functional MRI data of 1003 healthy adults. First, DNN reaches 83.0%, 87.6%, 92.0%, 93.5% and 94.1% accuracies respectively with the FC input derived from 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 independent component analysis (ICA) components. DNN outperforms the conventional machine learning methods on the 25-ICA-component scale FC, but the linear machine learning method catches up as the number of ICA components increases...
