Almost multiplicity-one property of spherical varieties over finite fields

Let $H$ be a connected algebraic subgroup of a connected reductive group $G$ over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$ such that $G/H$ is a $G$-spherical variety, i.e., $G/H$ has an open dense $B$-orbit for each Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$. We formulate, for the pair $(G,H)$, an almost multiplicity-one property. Then we establish a criterion for this property in terms of the $B$-stabilizers on $G/H$. In particular, we will see that this property is analogous to the strongly tempered condition in characteristic $0$.

Shalika Models for Finite General Linear and Unitary Groups

We completely and explicitly classify the irreducible representations of finite general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}_{2\frak{n}}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and finite unitary groups ${\rm{U}}_{2\frak{n}}(\mathbb{F}_q)$ that admit a Shalika model. Using Lusztig's Jordan decomposition of irreducible representations, we establish a multiplicity formula for Shalika multiplicities in terms of the Weyl group of the centralizer of a semisimple element in the dual group. We also derive connections to symplectic models, linear models, and relative Langlands duality.

Early Architecture Concepts for the Habitable Worlds Observatory -- System Design, Modeling, and Analysis

The Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO), NASA's next flagship science mission, follows in the tradition of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope and other preceding great observatories. HWO will directly image and characterize Earth-like exoplanet and their atmospheres, with the capability to detect biosignatures and potentially answer the question of whether we are we alone. HWO will also serve as a powerful general astrophysics observatory, enabling breakthroughs in galaxy evolution, stellar astrophysics, and dark matter studies. Currently in pre-formulation, the project has established Exploratory Analytic Cases (EACs), a series of architectural concept designs used to assess the mission's demanding science objectives while exploring challenging engineering parameters. This paper describes the first three EACs, starting with observing strategies and error budget formulation and then progressing to design formulations, trade studies and lessons learned; this paper also discusses the integrated modeling pipeline, a key multidisciplinary system-level analysis capability, and analysis findings as applied to the first EAC. These activities set the stage for the follow on EACs 4 and 5, which will further explore the trade space and prepare for the baseline design that will support the Mission Concept Review (MCR).

MedDialogRubrics: A Comprehensive Benchmark and Evaluation Framework for Multi-turn Medical Consultations in Large Language Models

Medical conversational AI (AI) plays a pivotal role in the development of safer and more effective medical dialogue systems. However, existing benchmarks and evaluation frameworks for assessing the information-gathering and diagnostic reasoning abilities of medical large language models (LLMs) have not been rigorously evaluated. To address these gaps, we present MedDialogRubrics, a novel benchmark comprising 5,200 synthetically constructed patient cases and over 60,000 fine-grained evaluation rubrics generated by LLMs and subsequently refined by clinical experts, specifically designed to assess the multi-turn diagnostic capabilities of LLM. Our framework employs a multi-agent system to synthesize realistic patient records and chief complaints from underlying disease knowledge without accessing real-world electronic health records, thereby mitigating privacy and data-governance concerns. We design a robust Patient Agent that is limited to a set of atomic medical facts and augmented with a dynamic guidance mechanism that continuously detects and corrects hallucinations throughout the dialogue, ensuring internal coherence and clinical plausibility of the simulated cases. Furthermore, we propose a structured LLM-based and expert-annotated rubric-generation pipeline that retrieves Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) guidelines and utilizes the reject sampling to derive a prioritized set of rubric items ("must-ask" items) for each case. We perform a comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art models and demonstrate that, across multiple assessment dimensions, current models face substantial challenges. Our results indicate that improving medical dialogue will require advances in dialogue management architectures, not just incremental tuning of the base-model.

Flight masks of the Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument

Over the past two decades, thousands of confirmed exoplanets have been detected. The next major challenge is to characterize these other worlds and their stellar systems. Much information on the composition and formation of exoplanets and circumstellar debris disks can only be achieved via direct imaging. Direct imaging is challenging because of the small angular separations (< 1 arcsec) and high star-to-planet flux ratios such as ~1e9 for a Jupiter analog or ~1e10 for an Earth analog in the visible. Atmospheric turbulence prohibits reaching such high flux ratios on the ground, so observations must be made above the Earth's atmosphere. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman), planned to launch in late 2026, will be the first space-based observatory to demonstrate high-contrast imaging with active wavefront control using its Coronagraph Instrument. The instrument's main purpose is to mature the various technologies needed for a future flagship mission to image and characterize Earth-like exoplanets. These technologies include two high-actuator-count deformable mirrors, photon-counting detectors, two complementary wavefront sensing and control loops, and two different coronagraph types. In this paper, we describe the complete set of flight masks in the Roman Coronagraph Instrument, their intended combinations, and how they were laid out, fabricated, and measured.

High-order wavefront sensing and control for the Roman Coronagraph Instrument (CGI): architecture and measured performance

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (``Roman'') is a 2.4m space telescope scheduled for a 2026 launch. The Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) on Roman is a technology-demonstration instrument with a coronagraph and, for the first time in space, deformable mirrors and active wavefront control. This paper walks through the algorithmic and system-level architecture of the HOWFSC implementation for CGI, including the use of ground-in-the-loop (GITL) operations to support computationally-expensive operations, and reports on instrument performance measured during thermal vacuum testing in instrument integration and test. CGI achieved better than $5\times10^{-8}$ total raw contrast with two independent coronagraph architectures covering 3-9 and 6-20 $\lambda/D$ between them and a $360^{\circ}$ dark hole on each. The contrast limits appear to be driven by time available for testing, and do not appear to represent a floor in the achievable performance of CGI in flight.

Periods of Deligne-Lusztig Characters associated to Spherical Varieties

In this paper, we calculate the periods of Deligne-Lusztig characters $R_{T,\chi}^G$ associated to $X^F$, where $X=G/H$ for a connected spherical subgroup $H$ of $G$. As an application, we deduce a formula that partially generalizes Lusztig's work on symmetric spaces and extends Reeder's formula in the complexity $0$ case.

Fourier-Jacobi models of Deligne-Lusztig characters and depth zero local descent for unitary groups

In this paper, we deduce explicit multiplicity formulas of the Fourier-Jacobi model for Deligne-Lusztig characters of finite symplectic groups, unitary groups, and general linear groups. We then apply these results to deduce the explicit depth zero local descent (\`a la Soudry and Tanay) for $p$-adic unitary groups. The result is a concrete example in the context of non-tempered Gan-Gross-Prasad program.

Nonlinearity Characteristic of High Impedance Fault at Resonant Distribution Networks: Theoretical Basis to Identify the Faulty Feeder

Feeder identification is indispensable for distribution networks to locate faults at a specific feeder, especially when measuring de-vices are insufficient for precise locations. For the high imped-ance fault (HIF), the feeder identification is much more compli-cated and related approaches are still in the early stage. This paper thoroughly and theoretically reveals the features of dif-ferent feeders when a HIF happens at the resonant grounded neutral (RGN) network, which is the most challenging condition for feeder identification. Firstly, the diversity of nonlinearity existing in HIFs is explained from the aspect of energy. Then, the differences of nonlinearities of zero-sequence currents between healthy and faulty feeders are deduced theoretically. Variations of the detuning index and damping ratio that exist in industries are both considered. Afterward, these theoretical conclusions are verified by the HIF cases experimented in a real 10kV system. Finally, based on the theories, we discuss about why the existing approaches are not reliable enough, and suggest some improve-ments.

Detection and Feeder Identification of the High Impedance Fault at Distribution Networks Based on Synchronous Waveform Distortions

Diagnosis of high impedance fault (HIF) is a challenge for nowadays distribution network protections. The fault current of a HIF is much lower than that of a normal load, and fault feature is significantly affected by fault scenarios. A detection and feeder identification algorithm for HIFs is proposed in this paper, based on the high-resolution and synchronous waveform data. In the algorithm, an interval slope is defined to describe the waveform distortions, which guarantees a uniform feature description under various HIF nonlinearities and noise interferences. For three typical types of network neutrals, i.e.,isolated neutral, resonant neutral, and low-resistor-earthed neutral, differences of the distorted components between the zero-sequence currents of healthy and faulty feeders are mathematically deduced, respectively. As a result, the proposed criterion, which is based on the distortion relationships between zero-sequence currents of feeders and the zero-sequence voltage at the substation, is theoretically supported. 28 HIFs grounded to various materials are tested in a 10kV distribution networkwith three neutral types, and are utilized to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Distortion-Based Detection of High Impedance Fault in Distribution Systems

Detecting the High impedance fault (HIF) in distribution systems plays an important role in power utilization safety. However, many HIFs are challenging to be identified due to their low currents and diverse characteristics. In particular, the slight nonlinearity during weak arcing processes, the distortion offset caused by the lag of heat dissipations, and the interference of background noises could lead to invalid of traditional detection algorithms. This paper proposes a distortion-based algorithm to improve the reliability of HIF detection. Firstly, the challenges brought by the diversity of HIF characteristics are illustrated with the experiments in a 10kV distribution system. Then, HIFs are classified into five types according to their characteristics. Secondly, an interval slope is defined to describe the waveform distortions of HIFs, and is extracted with the methods of the linear least square filtering (LLSF) and the Grubbs-criterion-based robust local regression smoothing (Grubbs-RLRS), so that feature descriptions under different fault conditions can be unified. Thirdly, an algorithm, as well as the criteria, is proposed to identify the fault features described by the interval slopes. Finally, the detection reliability of the algorithm is thoroughly verified with field HIF data, and the results show the improvements by comparing it to other ad-vanced algorithms.

PandaX-II Constraints on Spin-Dependent WIMP-Nucleon Effective Interactions

We present PandaX-II constraints on candidate WIMP-nucleon effective interactions involving the nucleon or WIMP spin, including, in addition to standard axial spin-dependent (SD) scattering, various couplings among vector and axial currents, magnetic and electric dipole moments, and tensor interactions. The data set corresponding to a total exposure of 54-ton-days is reanalyzed to determine constraints as a function of the WIMP mass and isospin coupling. We obtain WIMP-nucleon cross section bounds of $\rm 1.6 \times 10^{-41} cm^2$ and $\rm 9.0 \times 10^{-42} cm^2$ ($90\%$ c.l.) for neutron-only SD and tensor coupling, respectively, for a mass $M_\mathrm{WIMP} \sim {\rm 40~GeV}/c^2$. The SD limits are the best currently available for $M_\mathrm{WIMP} > {\rm 40~GeV}/c^2$. We show that PandaX-II has reached a sensitivity sufficient to probe a variety of other candidate spin-dependent interactions at the weak scale.

Key Technologies for the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope Coronagraph Instrument

The Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) is a high-contrast imager and integral field spectrograph that will enable the study of exoplanets and circumstellar disks at visible wavelengths. Ground-based high-contrast instrumentation has fundamentally limited performance at small working angles, even under optimistic assumptions for 30m-class telescopes. There is a strong scientific driver for better performance, particularly at visible wavelengths. Future flagship mission concepts aim to image Earth analogues with visible light flux ratios of more than 10^10. CGI is a critical intermediate step toward that goal, with a predicted 10^8-9 flux ratio capability in the visible. CGI achieves this through improvements over current ground and space systems in several areas: (i) Hardware: space-qualified (TRL9) deformable mirrors, detectors, and coronagraphs, (ii) Algorithms: wavefront sensing and control; post-processing of integral field spectrograph, polarimetric, and extended object data, and (iii) Validation of telescope and instrument models at high accuracy and precision. This white paper, submitted to the 2018 NAS Exoplanet Science Strategy call, describes the status of key CGI technologies and presents ways in which performance is likely to evolve as the CGI design matures.

Dark matter direct search sensitivity of the PandaX-4T experiment

The PandaX-4T experiment, a four-ton scale dark matter direct detection experiment, is being planned at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In this paper we present a simulation study of the expected background in this experiment. In a 2.8-ton fiducial mass and the signal region between 1 to 10 keV electron equivalent energy, the total electron recoil background is found to be 4.9x10^{-5} /(kg day keV). The nuclear recoil background in the same region is 2.8x10^{-7}/(kg day keV). With an exposure of 5.6 ton-years, the sensitivity of PandaX-4T could reach a minimum spin-independent dark matter-nucleon cross section of 6x10^{-48} cm^{2} at a dark matter mass of 40 GeV/c^{2}.

Exploring the dark matter inelastic frontier with 79.6 days of PandaX-II data

We report here the results of searching for inelastic scattering of dark matter (initial and final state dark matter particles differ by a small mass splitting) with nucleon with the first 79.6-day of PandaX-II data (Run 9). We set the upper limits for the spin independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section up to a mass splitting of 300 keV/c$^2$ at two benchmark dark matter masses of 1 and 10 TeV/c$^2$.

Dark Matter Results From 54-Ton-Day Exposure of PandaX-II Experiment

We report a new search of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) using the combined low background data sets in 2016 and 2017 from the PandaX-II experiment in China. The latest data set contains a new exposure of 77.1 live day, with the background reduced to a level of 0.8$\times10^{-3}$ evt/kg/day, improved by a factor of 2.5 in comparison to the previous run in 2016. No excess events were found above the expected background. With a total exposure of 5.4$\times10^4$ kg day, the most stringent upper limit on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section was set for a WIMP with mass larger than 100 GeV/c$^2$, with the lowest exclusion at 8.6$\times10^{-47}$ cm$^2$ at 40 GeV/c$^2$.

Dark Matter Results from First 98.7-day Data of PandaX-II Experiment

We report the WIMP dark matter search results using the first physics-run data of the PandaX-II 500 kg liquid xenon dual-phase time-projection chamber, operating at the China JinPing Underground Laboratory. No dark matter candidate is identified above background. In combination with the data set during the commissioning run, with a total exposure of 3.3$\times10^4$ kg-day,the most stringent limit to the spin-independent interaction between the ordinary and WIMP dark matter is set for a range of dark matter mass between 3.5 and 1000 GeV/c$^2$. The best upper limit on the scattering cross section is found $2.5\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for the WIMP mass 40 GeV/c$^2$ at 90% confidence level.
