CSS: Overcoming Pose and Scene Challenges in Crowd-Sourced 3D Gaussian Splatting

We introduce Crowd-Sourced Splatting (CSS), a novel 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) pipeline designed to overcome the challenges of pose-free scene reconstruction using crowd-sourced imagery. The dream of reconstructing historically significant but inaccessible scenes from collections of photographs has long captivated researchers. However, traditional 3D techniques struggle with missing camera poses, limited viewpoints, and inconsistent lighting. CSS addresses these challenges through robust geometric priors and advanced illumination modeling, enabling high-quality novel view synthesis under complex, real-world conditions. Our method demonstrates clear improvements over existing approaches, paving the way for more accurate and flexible applications in AR, VR, and large-scale 3D reconstruction.

A Light-weight Deep Human Activity Recognition Algorithm Using Multi-knowledge Distillation

Inertial sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR) is the base of many human-centered mobile applications. Deep learning-based fine-grained HAR models enable accurate classification in various complex application scenarios. Nevertheless, the large storage and computational overhead of the existing fine-grained deep HAR models hinder their widespread deployment on resource-limited platforms. Inspired by the knowledge distillation's reasonable model compression and potential performance improvement capability, we design a multi-level HAR modeling pipeline called Stage-Logits-Memory Distillation (SMLDist) based on the widely-used MobileNet. By paying more attention to the frequency-related features during the distillation process, the SMLDist improves the HAR classification robustness of the students. We also propose an auto-search mechanism in the heterogeneous classifiers to improve classification performance. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that SMLDist outperforms various state-of-the-art HAR frameworks in accuracy and F1 macro score. The practical evaluation of the Jetson Xavier AGX platform shows that the SMLDist model is both energy-efficient and computation-efficient. These experiments validate the reasonable balance between the robustness and efficiency of the proposed model. The comparative experiments of knowledge distillation on six public datasets also demonstrate that the SMLDist outperforms other advanced knowledge distillation methods of students' performance, which verifies the good generalization of the SMLDist on other classification tasks, including but not limited to HAR.

OccupancyDETR: Using DETR for Mixed Dense-sparse 3D Occupancy Prediction

Visual-based 3D semantic occupancy perception is a key technology for robotics, including autonomous vehicles, offering an enhanced understanding of the environment by 3D. This approach, however, typically requires more computational resources than BEV or 2D methods. We propose a novel 3D semantic occupancy perception method, OccupancyDETR, which utilizes a DETR-like object detection, a mixed dense-sparse 3D occupancy decoder. Our approach distinguishes between foreground and background within a scene. Initially, foreground objects are detected using the DETR-like object detection. Subsequently, queries for both foreground and background objects are fed into the mixed dense-sparse 3D occupancy decoder, performing upsampling in dense and sparse methods, respectively. Finally, a MaskFormer is utilized to infer the semantics of the background voxels. Our approach strikes a balance between efficiency and accuracy, achieving faster inference times, lower resource consumption, and improved performance for small object detection. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method on the SemanticKITTI dataset, showcasing an mIoU of 14 and a processing speed of 10 FPS, thereby presenting a promising solution for real-time 3D semantic occupancy perception.

Improved Coherence in Optically-Defined Niobium Trilayer Junction Qubits

Niobium offers the benefit of increased operating temperatures and frequencies for Josephson junctions, which are the core component of superconducting devices. However existing niobium processes are limited by more complicated fabrication methods and higher losses than now-standard aluminum junctions. Combining recent trilayer fabrication advancements, methods to remove lossy dielectrics and modern superconducting qubit design, we revisit niobium trilayer junctions and fabricate all-niobium transmons using only optical lithography. We characterize devices in the microwave domain, measuring coherence times up to $62~μ$s and an average qubit quality factor above $10^5$: much closer to state-of-the-art aluminum-junction devices. We find the higher superconducting gap energy also results in reduced quasiparticle sensitivity above $0.16~$K, where aluminum junction performance deteriorates. Our junction process is readily applied to standard optical-based foundry processes, opening new avenues for direct integration and scalability, and paves the way for higher-temperature and higher-frequency quantum devices.

Biphasic Face Photo-Sketch Synthesis via Semantic-Driven Generative Adversarial Network with Graph Representation Learning

Biphasic face photo-sketch synthesis has significant practical value in wide-ranging fields such as digital entertainment and law enforcement. Previous approaches directly generate the photo-sketch in a global view, they always suffer from the low quality of sketches and complex photo variations, leading to unnatural and low-fidelity results. In this paper, we propose a novel Semantic-Driven Generative Adversarial Network to address the above issues, cooperating with Graph Representation Learning. Considering that human faces have distinct spatial structures, we first inject class-wise semantic layouts into the generator to provide style-based spatial information for synthesized face photos and sketches. Additionally, to enhance the authenticity of details in generated faces, we construct two types of representational graphs via semantic parsing maps upon input faces, dubbed the IntrA-class Semantic Graph (IASG) and the InteR-class Structure Graph (IRSG). Specifically, the IASG effectively models the intra-class semantic correlations of each facial semantic component, thus producing realistic facial details. To preserve the generated faces being more structure-coordinated, the IRSG models inter-class structural relations among every facial component by graph representation learning. To further enhance the perceptual quality of synthesized images, we present a biphasic interactive cycle training strategy by fully taking advantage of the multi-level feature consistency between the photo and sketch. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art competitors on the CUFS and CUFSF datasets.

Optical tuning of the diamond Fermi level measured by correlated scanning probe microscopy and quantum defect spectroscopy

Quantum technologies based on quantum point defects in crystals require control over the defect charge state. Here we tune the charge state of shallow nitrogen-vacancy and silicon-vacancy centers by locally oxidizing a hydrogenated surface with moderate optical excitation and simultaneous spectral monitoring. The loss of conductivity and change in work function due to oxidation are measured in atmosphere using conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). We correlate these scanning probe measurements with optical spectroscopy of the nitrogen-vacancy and silicon-vacancy centers created via implantation and annealing 15-25 nm beneath the diamond surface. The observed charge state of the defects as a function of optical exposure demonstrates that laser oxidation provides a way to precisely tune the Fermi level over a range of at least 2.00 eV. We also observe a significantly larger oxidation rate for implanted surfaces compared to unimplanted surfaces under ambient conditions. Combined with knowledge of the electron affinity of a surface, these results suggest KPFM is a powerful, high-spatial resolution technique to advance surface Fermi level engineering for charge stabilization of quantum defects.

Learning Anchor Transformations for 3D Garment Animation

This paper proposes an anchor-based deformation model, namely AnchorDEF, to predict 3D garment animation from a body motion sequence. It deforms a garment mesh template by a mixture of rigid transformations with extra nonlinear displacements. A set of anchors around the mesh surface is introduced to guide the learning of rigid transformation matrices. Once the anchor transformations are found, per-vertex nonlinear displacements of the garment template can be regressed in a canonical space, which reduces the complexity of deformation space learning. By explicitly constraining the transformed anchors to satisfy the consistencies of position, normal and direction, the physical meaning of learned anchor transformations in space is guaranteed for better generalization. Furthermore, an adaptive anchor updating is proposed to optimize the anchor position by being aware of local mesh topology for learning representative anchor transformations. Qualitative and quantitative experiments on different types of garments demonstrate that AnchorDEF achieves the state-of-the-art performance on 3D garment deformation prediction in motion, especially for loose-fitting garments.

HMC: Hierarchical Mesh Coarsening for Skeleton-free Motion Retargeting

We present a simple yet effective method for skeleton-free motion retargeting. Previous methods transfer motion between high-resolution meshes, failing to preserve the inherent local-part motions in the mesh. Addressing this issue, our proposed method learns the correspondence in a coarse-to-fine fashion by integrating the retargeting process with a mesh-coarsening pipeline. First, we propose a mesh-coarsening module that coarsens the mesh representations for better motion transfer. This module improves the ability to handle small-part motion and preserves the local motion interdependence between neighboring mesh vertices. Furthermore, we leverage a hierarchical refinement procedure to complement missing mesh details by gradually improving the low-resolution mesh output with a higher-resolution one. We evaluate our method on several well-known 3D character datasets, and it yields an average improvement of 25% on point-wise mesh euclidean distance (PMD) against the start-of-art method. Moreover, our qualitative results show that our method is significantly helpful in preserving the moving consistency of different body parts on the target character due to disentangling body-part structures and mesh details in a hierarchical way.

Skinned Motion Retargeting with Residual Perception of Motion Semantics & Geometry

A good motion retargeting cannot be reached without reasonable consideration of source-target differences on both the skeleton and shape geometry levels. In this work, we propose a novel Residual RETargeting network (R2ET) structure, which relies on two neural modification modules, to adjust the source motions to fit the target skeletons and shapes progressively. In particular, a skeleton-aware module is introduced to preserve the source motion semantics. A shape-aware module is designed to perceive the geometries of target characters to reduce interpenetration and contact-missing. Driven by our explored distance-based losses that explicitly model the motion semantics and geometry, these two modules can learn residual motion modifications on the source motion to generate plausible retargeted motion in a single inference without post-processing. To balance these two modifications, we further present a balancing gate to conduct linear interpolation between them. Extensive experiments on the public dataset Mixamo demonstrate that our R2ET achieves the state-of-the-art performance, and provides a good balance between the preservation of motion semantics as well as the attenuation of interpenetration and contact-missing. Code is available at https://github.com/Kebii/R2ET.

Efficient measurement of the time-dependent cavity field through compressed sensing

We propose a method based on compressed sensing (CS) to measure the evolution processes of the states of a driven cavity quantum electrodynamics system. In precisely reconstructing the coherent cavity field amplitudes, we have to prepare the same states repetitively and each time perform one measurement with short sampling intervals considering the quantum nature of measurement and the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem. However, with the help of CS, the number of measurements can be exponentially reduced without loss of the recovery accuracy. We use largely detuned atoms and control their interactions with the cavity field to modulate coherent state amplitudes according to the scheme encoded in the sensing matrix. The simulation results show that the CS method efficiently recovers the amplitudes of the coherent cavity field even in the presence of noise.

Regional Semantic Contrast and Aggregation for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

Learning semantic segmentation from weakly-labeled (e.g., image tags only) data is challenging since it is hard to infer dense object regions from sparse semantic tags. Despite being broadly studied, most current efforts directly learn from limited semantic annotations carried by individual image or image pairs, and struggle to obtain integral localization maps. Our work alleviates this from a novel perspective, by exploring rich semantic contexts synergistically among abundant weakly-labeled training data for network learning and inference. In particular, we propose regional semantic contrast and aggregation (RCA) . RCA is equipped with a regional memory bank to store massive, diverse object patterns appearing in training data, which acts as strong support for exploration of dataset-level semantic structure. Particularly, we propose i) semantic contrast to drive network learning by contrasting massive categorical object regions, leading to a more holistic object pattern understanding, and ii) semantic aggregation to gather diverse relational contexts in the memory to enrich semantic representations. In this manner, RCA earns a strong capability of fine-grained semantic understanding, and eventually establishes new state-of-the-art results on two popular benchmarks, i.e., PASCAL VOC 2012 and COCO 2014.

The Charging Performance of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Quantum Battery

The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has recently received considerable attention in condensed matter because it describes a typical one-dimensional system with topological edge states. Here, we investigate SSH-based charging protocols of quantum batteries (QB) with N quantum cells. This SSH QB hopping interaction induced ground state splitting makes the different effects of the dimerize parameter to the QB in the different quantum phase region. In the non-splitting region, the dimerize parameter has little influence on the QB. Whereas the fully-splitting region, the dimerize parameter has a significantly quantum advantage to the energy and ergotropy in the ground state fully splitting region, which leads the dimerize spin couples will have larger occupations than other spins. Although we have enhanced energy and ergotropy by the dimerize parameter, QB's capacity will decrease.

Fine-Grained Trajectory-based Travel Time Estimation for Multi-city Scenarios Based on Deep Meta-Learning

Travel Time Estimation (TTE) is indispensable in intelligent transportation system (ITS). It is significant to achieve the fine-grained Trajectory-based Travel Time Estimation (TTTE) for multi-city scenarios, namely to accurately estimate travel time of the given trajectory for multiple city scenarios. However, it faces great challenges due to complex factors including dynamic temporal dependencies and fine-grained spatial dependencies. To tackle these challenges, we propose a meta learning based framework, MetaTTE, to continuously provide accurate travel time estimation over time by leveraging well-designed deep neural network model called DED, which consists of Data preprocessing module and Encoder-Decoder network module. By introducing meta learning techniques, the generalization ability of MetaTTE is enhanced using small amount of examples, which opens up new opportunities to increase the potential of achieving consistent performance on TTTE when traffic conditions and road networks change over time in the future. The DED model adopts an encoder-decoder network to capture fine-grained spatial and temporal representations. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets are conducted to confirm that our MetaTTE outperforms six state-of-art baselines, and improve 29.35% and 25.93% accuracy than the best baseline on Chengdu and Porto datasets, respectively.

Spatio-Temporal meets Wavelet: Disentangled Traffic Flow Forecasting via Efficient Spectral Graph Attention Network

Traffic forecasting is crucial for public safety and resource optimization, yet is very challenging due to three aspects: i) current existing works mostly exploit intricate temporal patterns (e.g., the short-term thunderstorm and long-term daily trends) within a single method, which fail to accurately capture spatio-temporal dependencies under different schemas; ii) the under-exploration of the graph positional encoding limit the extraction of spatial information in the commonly used full graph attention network; iii) the quadratic complexity of the full graph attention introduces heavy computational needs. To achieve the effective traffic flow forecasting, we propose an efficient spectral graph attention network with disentangled traffic sequences. Specifically, the discrete wavelet transform is leveraged to obtain the low- and high-frequency components of traffic sequences, and a dual-channel encoder is elaborately designed to accurately capture the spatio-temporal dependencies under long- and short-term schemas of the low- and high-frequency components. Moreover, a novel wavelet-based graph positional encoding and a query sampling strategy are introduced in our spectral graph attention to effectively guide message passing and efficiently calculate the attention. Extensive experiments on four real-world datasets show the superiority of our model, i.e., the higher traffic forecasting precision with lower computational cost.

Attentive WaveBlock: Complementarity-enhanced Mutual Networks for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation in Person Re-identification and Beyond

Unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) for person re-identification is challenging because of the huge gap between the source and target domain. A typical self-training method is to use pseudo-labels generated by clustering algorithms to iteratively optimize the model on the target domain. However, a drawback to this is that noisy pseudo-labels generally cause trouble in learning. To address this problem, a mutual learning method by dual networks has been developed to produce reliable soft labels. However, as the two neural networks gradually converge, their complementarity is weakened and they likely become biased towards the same kind of noise. This paper proposes a novel light-weight module, the Attentive WaveBlock (AWB), which can be integrated into the dual networks of mutual learning to enhance the complementarity and further depress noise in the pseudo-labels. Specifically, we first introduce a parameter-free module, the WaveBlock, which creates a difference between features learned by two networks by waving blocks of feature maps differently. Then, an attention mechanism is leveraged to enlarge the difference created and discover more complementary features. Furthermore, two kinds of combination strategies, i.e. pre-attention and post-attention, are explored. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance with significant improvements on multiple UDA person re-identification tasks. We also prove the generality of the proposed method by applying it to vehicle re-identification and image classification tasks. CDGNet: A Cross-Time Dynamic Graph-based Deep Learning Model for Traffic Forecasting

Traffic forecasting is important in intelligent transportation systems of webs and beneficial to traffic safety, yet is very challenging because of the complex and dynamic spatio-temporal dependencies in real-world traffic systems. Prior methods use the pre-defined or learnable static graph to extract spatial correlations. However, the static graph-based methods fail to mine the evolution of the traffic network. Researchers subsequently generate the dynamic graph for each time slice to reflect the changes of spatial correlations, but they follow the paradigm of independently modeling spatio-temporal dependencies, ignoring the cross-time spatial influence. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-time dynamic graph-based deep learning model, named CDGNet, for traffic forecasting. The model is able to effectively capture the cross-time spatial dependence between each time slice and its historical time slices by utilizing the cross-time dynamic graph. Meanwhile, we design a gating mechanism to sparse the cross-time dynamic graph, which conforms to the sparse spatial correlations in the real world. Besides, we propose a novel encoder-decoder architecture to incorporate the cross-time dynamic graph-based GCN for multi-step traffic forecasting. Experimental results on three real-world public traffic datasets demonstrate that CDGNet outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines. We additionally provide a qualitative study to analyze the effectiveness of our architecture.

STJLA: A Multi-Context Aware Spatio-Temporal Joint Linear Attention Network for Traffic Forecasting

Traffic prediction has gradually attracted the attention of researchers because of the increase in traffic big data. Therefore, how to mine the complex spatio-temporal correlations in traffic data to predict traffic conditions more accurately become a difficult problem. Previous works combined graph convolution networks (GCNs) and self-attention mechanism with deep time series models (e.g. recurrent neural networks) to capture the spatio-temporal correlations separately, ignoring the relationships across time and space. Besides, GCNs are limited by over-smoothing issue and self-attention is limited by quadratic problem, result in GCNs lack global representation capabilities, and self-attention inefficiently capture the global spatial dependence. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning model for traffic forecasting, named Multi-Context Aware Spatio-Temporal Joint Linear Attention (STJLA), which applies linear attention to the spatio-temporal joint graph to capture global dependence between all spatio-temporal nodes efficiently. More specifically, STJLA utilizes static structural context and dynamic semantic context to improve model performance. The static structure context based on node2vec and one-hot encoding enriches the spatio-temporal position information. Furthermore, the multi-head diffusion convolution network based dynamic spatial context enhances the local spatial perception ability, and the GRU based dynamic temporal context stabilizes sequence position information of the linear attention, respectively. Experiments on two real-world traffic datasets, England and PEMSD7, demonstrate that our STJLA can achieve up to 9.83% and 3.08% accuracy improvement in MAE measure over state-of-the-art baselines.

DMGCRN: Dynamic Multi-Graph Convolution Recurrent Network for Traffic Forecasting

Traffic forecasting is a problem of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and crucial for individuals and public agencies. Therefore, researches pay great attention to deal with the complex spatio-temporal dependencies of traffic system for accurate forecasting. However, there are two challenges: 1) Most traffic forecasting studies mainly focus on modeling correlations of neighboring sensors and ignore correlations of remote sensors, e.g., business districts with similar spatio-temporal patterns; 2) Prior methods which use static adjacency matrix in graph convolutional networks (GCNs) are not enough to reflect the dynamic spatial dependence in traffic system. Moreover, fine-grained methods which use self-attention to model dynamic correlations of all sensors ignore hierarchical information in road networks and have quadratic computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic multi-graph convolution recurrent network (DMGCRN) to tackle above issues, which can model the spatial correlations of distance, the spatial correlations of structure, and the temporal correlations simultaneously. We not only use the distance-based graph to capture spatial information from nodes are close in distance but also construct a novel latent graph which encoded the structure correlations among roads to capture spatial information from nodes are similar in structure. Furthermore, we divide the neighbors of each sensor into coarse-grained regions, and dynamically assign different weights to each region at different times. Meanwhile, we integrate the dynamic multi-graph convolution network into the gated recurrent unit (GRU) to capture temporal dependence. Extensive experiments on three real-world traffic datasets demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art baselines.
