Investigation of the Generalisation Ability of Genetic Programming-evolved Scheduling Rules in Dynamic Flexible Job Shop Scheduling

Dynamic Flexible Job Shop Scheduling (DFJSS) is a complex combinatorial optimisation problem that requires simultaneous machine assignment and operation sequencing decisions in dynamic production environments. Genetic Programming (GP) has been widely applied to automatically evolve scheduling rules for DFJSS. However, existing studies typically train and test GP-evolved rules on DFJSS instances of the same type, which differ only by random seeds rather than by structural characteristics, leaving their cross-type generalisation ability largely unexplored. To address this gap, this paper systematically investigates the generalisation ability of GP-evolved scheduling rules under diverse DFJSS conditions. A series of experiments are conducted across multiple dimensions, including problem scale (i.e., the number of machines and jobs), key job shop parameters (e.g., utilisation level), and data distributions, to analyse how these factors influence GP performance on unseen instance types. The results show that good generalisation occurs when the training instances contain more jobs than the test instances while keeping the number of machines fixed, and when both training and test instances have similar scales or job shop parameters. Further analysis reveals that the number and distribution of decision points in DFJSS instances play a crucial role in explaining these performance differences. Similar decision point distributions lead to better generalisation, whereas significant discrepancies result in a marked degradation of performance. Overall, this study provides new insights into the generalisation ability of GP in DFJSS and highlights the necessity of evolving more generalisable GP rules capable of handling heterogeneous DFJSS instances effectively.

DyRo-MCTS: A Robust Monte Carlo Tree Search Approach to Dynamic Job Shop Scheduling

Dynamic job shop scheduling, a fundamental combinatorial optimisation problem in various industrial sectors, poses substantial challenges for effective scheduling due to frequent disruptions caused by the arrival of new jobs. State-of-the-art methods employ machine learning to learn scheduling policies offline, enabling rapid responses to dynamic events. However, these offline policies are often imperfect, necessitating the use of planning techniques such as Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to improve performance at online decision time. The unpredictability of new job arrivals complicates online planning, as decisions based on incomplete problem information are vulnerable to disturbances. To address this issue, we propose the Dynamic Robust MCTS (DyRo-MCTS) approach, which integrates action robustness estimation into MCTS. DyRo-MCTS guides the production environment toward states that not only yield good scheduling outcomes but are also easily adaptable to future job arrivals. Extensive experiments show that DyRo-MCTS significantly improves the performance of offline-learned policies with negligible additional online planning time. Moreover, DyRo-MCTS consistently outperforms vanilla MCTS across various scheduling scenarios. Further analysis reveals that its ability to make robust scheduling decisions leads to long-term, sustainable performance gains under disturbances.

Bridging Fitness With Search Spaces By Fitness Supremums: A Theoretical Study on LGP

Genetic programming has undergone rapid development in recent years. However, theoretical studies of genetic programming are far behind. One of the major obstacles to theoretical studies is the challenge of developing a model to describe the relationship between fitness values and program genotypes. In this paper, we take linear genetic programming (LGP) as an example to study the fitness-to-genotype relationship. We find that the fitness expectation increases with fitness supremum over instruction editing distance, considering 1) the fitness supremum linearly increases with the instruction editing distance in LGP, 2) the fitness infimum is fixed, and 3) the fitness probabilities over different instruction editing distances are similar. We then extend these findings to explain the bloat effect and the minimum hitting time of LGP based on instruction editing distance. The bloat effect happens because it is more likely to produce better offspring by adding instructions than by removing them, given an instruction editing distance from the optimal program. The analysis of the minimum hitting time suggests that for a basic LGP genetic operator (i.e., freemut), maintaining a necessarily small program size and mutating multiple instructions each time can improve LGP performance. The reported empirical results verify our hypothesis.

Kernel-learning parameter prediction and evaluation in algebraic multigrid method for several PDEs

This paper explores the application of kernel learning methods for parameter prediction and evaluation in the Algebraic Multigrid Method (AMG), focusing on several Partial Differential Equation (PDE) problems. AMG is an efficient iterative solver for large-scale sparse linear systems, particularly those derived from elliptic and parabolic PDE discretizations. However, its performance heavily relies on numerous parameters, which are often set empirically and are highly sensitive to AMG's effectiveness. Traditional parameter optimization methods are either computationally expensive or lack theoretical support. To address this, we propose a Gaussian Process Regression (GPR)-based strategy to optimize AMG parameters and introduce evaluation metrics to assess their effectiveness. Trained on small-scale datasets, GPR predicts nearly optimal parameters, bypassing the time-consuming parameter sweeping process. We also use kernel learning techniques to build a kernel function library and determine the optimal kernel function through linear combination, enhancing prediction accuracy. In numerical experiments, we tested typical PDEs such as the constant-coefficient Poisson equation, variable-coefficient Poisson equation, diffusion equation, and Helmholtz equation. Results show that GPR-predicted parameters match grid search results in iteration counts while significantly reducing computational time. A comprehensive analysis using metrics like mean squared error, prediction interval coverage, and Bayesian information criterion confirms GPR's efficiency and reliability. These findings validate GPR's effectiveness in AMG parameter optimization and provide theoretical support for AMG's practical application.

Turán problems for suspension of a balanced tree

The Turán number $\ex(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges that an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph can have. The suspension $\widehat{H}$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a new vertex which is adjacent to all vertices of $H$ and a tree is balanced if the sizes of its two color classes differ at most $1$. In this paper, we obtain a sharp bound of $\ex(n,\widehat{T})$ when $n\ge 4(4k)^6$ based on the Erdős-Sós conjecture. We also show the bound is sharp for infinitely many $n$ and characterize all extremal graphs. In particular, if $T$ satisfies some conditions such as $T$ contains a matching covering all vertices in one color class, then the bound is sharp for all $n$. This is a new class of graphs whose decomposition family does not contain a linear forest but we still can determine its Turán number.

A full breakthrough in vacuum ultraviolet nonlinear optical performance of NH4B4O6F

The lack of suitable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals has hindered the development of compact, high-power VUV sources via second harmonic generation (SHG). Here, we report on the development of the fluorooxoborate crystal NH4B4O6F (ABF) as a promising material for VUV light generation. For the first time, devices with specific phase-matching angles were constructed, achieving a record 158.9 nm VUV light through phase-matching SHG and a maximum nanosecond pulse energy of 4.8 mJ at 177.3 nm with a conversion efficiency of 5.9 %. The enhanced NLO performance is attributed to optimized arrangements of fluorine-based units creating asymmetric sublattices. This work marks a significant milestone in the field of NLO materials, facilitating the future applications of compact, high-power VUV lasers utilizing ABF.

Novel nonlinear system family generated from coupling effect of Sin-Cosine function

The Sine-Cosine function, which is widely adopted in mathematics and physics, has attracted our attention due to its unique properties. By delving into the coupling effect of the Sine-Cosine function, we discover a previously unreported class of nonlinear systems, namely the Sine-Cosine Nonlinear System Family (SCNSF). This discovery is motivated by the need to expand the repertoire of nonlinear systems and understand the complex behaviors that can emerge from the combination of basic trigonometric functions. The SCNSF has both chaotic characteristics in the real number domain and fractal characteristics in the complex number domain. The classification and general mathematical description of SCNSF provide a solid theoretical foundation for further research. The proposal of three types of classic systems within SCNSF and the investigation of their chaotic properties and hardware implementation open up new avenues for practical applications. The large chaotic range exhibited by these systems implies their potential applications in various fields such as secure communication and chaotic circuit design. Moreover, the discovery of the chaos generation mechanism based on the coupling effect of the Sine-Cosine function deepens our understanding of the origin of chaos. In the complex number domain, the high parameter sensitivity and rich fractal patterns of SCNSF can be can be harnessed to develop more advanced encryption algorithms and more sensitive signal detection methods, thereby contributing to the advancement of information security and signal processing technologies. Overall, the chaotic and fractal properties of SCNSF make it a valuable asset in the pursuit of innovative solutions in multiple scientific and engineering disciplines.

Multi-task Geometric Estimation of Depth and Surface Normal from Monocular 360° Images

Geometric estimation is required for scene understanding and analysis in panoramic 360° images. Current methods usually predict a single feature, such as depth or surface normal. These methods can lack robustness, especially when dealing with intricate textures or complex object surfaces. We introduce a novel multi-task learning (MTL) network that simultaneously estimates depth and surface normals from 360° images. Our first innovation is our MTL architecture, which enhances predictions for both tasks by integrating geometric information from depth and surface normal estimation, enabling a deeper understanding of 3D scene structure. Another innovation is our fusion module, which bridges the two tasks, allowing the network to learn shared representations that improve accuracy and robustness. Experimental results demonstrate that our MTL architecture significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both depth and surface normal estimation, showing superior performance in complex and diverse scenes. Our model's effectiveness and generalizability, particularly in handling intricate surface textures, establish it as a new benchmark in 360° image geometric estimation. The code and model are available at \url{https://github.com/huangkun101230/360MTLGeometricEstimation}.

Multi-Representation Genetic Programming: A Case Study on Tree-based and Linear Representations

Existing genetic programming (GP) methods are typically designed based on a certain representation, such as tree-based or linear representations. These representations show various pros and cons in different domains. However, due to the complicated relationships among representation and fitness landscapes of GP, it is hard to intuitively determine which GP representation is the most suitable for solving a certain problem. Evolving programs (or models) with multiple representations simultaneously can alternatively search on different fitness landscapes since representations are highly related to the search space that essentially defines the fitness landscape. Fully using the latent synergies among different GP individual representations might be helpful for GP to search for better solutions. However, existing GP literature rarely investigates the simultaneous effective use of evolving multiple representations. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a multi-representation GP algorithm based on tree-based and linear representations, which are two commonly used GP representations. In addition, we develop a new cross-representation crossover operator to harness the interplay between tree-based and linear representations. Empirical results show that navigating the learned knowledge between basic tree-based and linear representations successfully improves the effectiveness of GP with solely tree-based or linear representation in solving symbolic regression and dynamic job shop scheduling problems.

Maximum cliques in a graph without disjoint given subgraph

The generalized Turán number $\ex(n,K_s,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $K_s$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. Let $kF$ denote $k$ disjoint copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku and Vizer [DM, 2019, 3130-3141] gave a lower bound for $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and obtained the magnitude of $\ex(n, K_s, kK_r)$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_3,2C_5)$ and described the unique extremal graph for large $n$. Moreover, we also determine the exact value of $\ex(n,K_r,(k+1)K_r)$ which generalizes some known results.

Image encryption for Offshore wind power based on 2D-LCLM and Zhou Yi Eight Trigrams

Offshore wind power is an important part of the new power system, due to the complex and changing situation at ocean, its normal operation and maintenance cannot be done without information such as images, therefore, it is especially important to transmit the correct image in the process of information transmission. In this paper, we propose a new encryption algorithm for offshore wind power based on two-dimensional lagged complex logistic mapping (2D-LCLM) and Zhou Yi Eight Trigrams. Firstly, the initial value of the 2D-LCLM is constructed by the Sha-256 to associate the 2D-LCLM with the plaintext. Secondly, a new encryption rule is proposed from the Zhou Yi Eight Trigrams to obfuscate the pixel values and generate the round key. Then, 2D-LCLM is combined with the Zigzag to form an S-box. Finally, the simulation experiment of the algorithm is accomplished. The experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm can resistant common attacks and has prefect encryption performance.

Efficient All-reduce for Distributed DNN Training in Optical Interconnect System

Communication efficiency plays an important role in accelerating the distributed training of Deep Neural Networks (DNN). All-reduce is the crucial communication primitive to reduce model parameters in distributed DNN training. Most existing all-reduce algorithms are designed for traditional electrical interconnect systems, which cannot meet the communication requirements for distributed training of large DNNs due to the low data bandwidth of the electrical interconnect systems. One of the promising alternatives for electrical interconnect is optical interconnect, which can provide high bandwidth, low transmission delay, and low power cost. We propose an efficient scheme called WRHT (Wavelength Reused Hierarchical Tree) for implementing all-reduce operation in optical interconnect systems. WRHT can take advantage of WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) to reduce the communication time of distributed data-parallel DNN training. We further derive the required number of wavelengths, the minimum number of communication steps, and the communication time for the all-reduce operation on optical interconnect. The constraint of insertion loss is also considered in our analysis. Simulation results show that the communication time of all-reduce by WRHT is reduced by 80.81%, 64.36%, and 82.12%, respectively, compared with three traditional all-reduce algorithms according to our simulation results of an optical interconnect system. Our results also show that WRHT can reduce the communication time of all-reduce operation by 92.42% and 91.31% compared to two existing all-reduce algorithms running in the electrical interconnect system.

First, the security posture system architecture is designed by analyzing the business characteristics of power information network applications. Second, combining the importance of power application business, the spatial element index system of coupled interconnection is established from three dimensions of network reliability, threat, and vulnerability. Then, the BP neural network optimized by the genetic evolutionary algorithm is incorporated into the element index calculation process, and the quantitative model of security posture of the power information network based on the evolutionary neural network is constructed. Finally, a simulation experiment environment is built according to a power sector network topology, and the effectiveness and robustness of the method proposed in the study are verified.

An algorithm of finding rules for a class of cellular automata

Cellular automata (CA) is an important modelling paradigm for complex systems. In the design of cellular automata, the most difficult task is to find the transformation rules that describe the temporal evolution or pattern of a modelled system. A CA with weights(CAW) yields transition rules algorithm is proposed in this paper, which have ample physical meanings and extend the category of CA. Firstly, the weights are increased to connect the updated cell and its neighbours, and the output of each cell depends on the states of cells in the neighbourhood and their respective weights. Secondly, the error correction algorithm is adopted to find correct transition rules by adjusting weights. When the error is zero, the required transition rules with correct weights will be found to describe the fixed configuration. The CAW with the correct rules will relax to the fixed configuration regardless of the initial states. Finally, the mathematical analysis and simulation are carried out with one-dimensional CAW, and the results show that the proposed algorithm has the ability to find correct transition rules as the error converges exponentially.

Multi-source data processing and fusion method for power distribution internet of things based on edge intelligence

With the rapid advancement of the Energy Internet strategy, the number of sensors within the Power Distribution Internet of Things (PD-IoT) has increased dramatically. In this paper, an edge intelligence-based PD-IoT multi-source data processing and fusion method is proposed to solve the problems of confusing storage and insufficient fusion computing performance of multi-source heterogeneous distribution data. First, a PD-IoT multi-source data processing and fusion architecture based on edge smart terminals is designed. Second, to realize the uniform conversion of various sensor data sources in the distribution network in terms of magnitude and order of magnitude. By introducing the Box-Cox transform to improve the data offset problem in the Zscore normalization process, a multi-source heterogeneous data processing method for distribution networks based on the Box-Cox transform Zscore is proposed. Then, the conflicting phenomena of DS inference methods in data source fusion are optimally handled based on the PCA algorithm. A multi-source data fusion model based on DS inference with conflict optimization is constructed to ensure the effective fusion of distribution data sources from different domains. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by an experimental analysis of an IEEE39 node system in a regional distribution network in China.
