PanoNormal: Monocular Indoor 360° Surface Normal Estimation

The presence of spherical distortion in equirectangular projection (ERP) images presents a persistent challenge in dense regression tasks such as surface normal estimation. Although it may appear straightforward to repurpose architectures developed for 360° depth estimation, our empirical findings indicate that such models yield suboptimal performance when applied to surface normal prediction. This is largely attributed to their architectural bias toward capturing global scene layout, which comes at the expense of the fine-grained local geometric cues that are critical for accurate surface orientation estimation. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been employed to mitigate spherical distortion, their fixed receptive fields limit their ability to capture holistic scene structure. Conversely, vision transformers (ViTs) are capable of modeling long-range dependencies via global self-attention, but often fail to preserve high-frequency local detail. To address these limitations, we propose \textit{PanoNormal}, a monocular surface normal estimation architecture for 360° images that integrates the complementary strengths of CNNs and ViTs. In particular, we design a multi-level global self-attention mechanism that explicitly accounts for the spherical feature distribution, enabling our model to recover both global contextual structure and local geometric details. Experimental results demonstrate that our method not only achieves state-of-the-art performance on several benchmark 360° datasets, but also significantly outperforms adapted depth estimation models on the task of surface normal prediction. 360° Stereo Image Composition with Depth Adaption

360° images and videos have become an economic and popular way to provide VR experiences using real-world content. However, the manipulation of the stereo panoramic content remains less explored. In this paper, we focus on the 360° image composition problem, and develop a solution that can take an object from a stereo image pair and insert it at a given 3D position in a target stereo panorama, with well-preserved geometry information. Our method uses recovered 3D point clouds to guide the composited image generation. More specifically, we observe that using only a one-off operation to insert objects into equirectangular images will never produce satisfactory depth perception and generate ghost artifacts when users are watching the result from different view directions. Therefore, we propose a novel per-view projection method that segments the object in 3D spherical space with the stereo camera pair facing in that direction. A deep depth densification network is proposed to generate depth guidance for the stereo image generation of each view segment according to the desired position and pose of the inserted object. We finally combine the synthesized view segments and blend the objects into the target stereo 360° scene. A user study demonstrates that our method can provide good depth perception and removes ghost artifacts. The per-view solution is a potential paradigm for other content manipulation methods for 360° images and videos.

Reconstructing Recognizable 3D Face Shapes based on 3D Morphable Models

Many recent works have reconstructed distinctive 3D face shapes by aggregating shape parameters of the same identity and separating those of different people based on parametric models (e.g., 3D morphable models (3DMMs)). However, despite the high accuracy in the face recognition task using these shape parameters, the visual discrimination of face shapes reconstructed from those parameters is unsatisfactory. The following research question has not been answered in previous works: Do discriminative shape parameters guarantee visual discrimination in represented 3D face shapes? This paper analyzes the relationship between shape parameters and reconstructed shape geometry and proposes a novel shape identity-aware regularization(SIR) loss for shape parameters, aiming at increasing discriminability in both the shape parameter and shape geometry domains. Moreover, to cope with the lack of training data containing both landmark and identity annotations, we propose a network structure and an associated training strategy to leverage mixed data containing either identity or landmark labels. We compare our method with existing methods in terms of the reconstruction error, visual distinguishability, and face recognition accuracy of the shape parameters. Experimental results show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Sphere Face Model:A 3D Morphable Model with Hypersphere Manifold Latent Space

3D Morphable Models (3DMMs) are generative models for face shape and appearance. However, the shape parameters of traditional 3DMMs satisfy the multivariate Gaussian distribution while the identity embeddings satisfy the hypersphere distribution, and this conflict makes it challenging for face reconstruction models to preserve the faithfulness and the shape consistency simultaneously. To address this issue, we propose the Sphere Face Model(SFM), a novel 3DMM for monocular face reconstruction, which can preserve both shape fidelity and identity consistency. The core of our SFM is the basis matrix which can be used to reconstruct 3D face shapes, and the basic matrix is learned by adopting a two-stage training approach where 3D and 2D training data are used in the first and second stages, respectively. To resolve the distribution mismatch, we design a novel loss to make the shape parameters have a hyperspherical latent space. Extensive experiments show that SFM has high representation ability and shape parameter space's clustering performance. Moreover, it produces fidelity face shapes, and the shapes are consistent in challenging conditions in monocular face reconstruction.
