Hybrid Symbolic-Numeric Framework for Power System Modeling and Analysis

With the recent proliferation of open-source packages for computing, power system differential-algebraic equation (DAE) modeling and simulation are being revisited to reduce the programming efforts. Existing open-source tools require manual efforts to develop code for numerical equations, sparse Jacobians, and discontinuous components. This paper proposes a hybrid symbolic-numeric framework, exemplified by an open-source Python-based library ANDES, which consists of a symbolic layer for descriptive modeling and a numeric layer for vector-based numerical computation. This method enables the implementation of DAE models by mixing and matching modeling components, through which models are described. In the framework, a rich set of discontinuous components and standard transfer function blocks are provided besides essential modeling elements for rapid modeling. ANDES can automatically generate robust and fast numerical simulation code, as well as and high-quality documentation. Case studies present a) two implementations of turbine governor model TGOV1, b) power flow computation time break down for MATPOWER systems, c) validation of time-domain simulation with commercial software using three test systems with a variety of models, and d) the full eigenvalue analysis for Kundur's system. Validation shows that ANDES closely matches the commercial tool DSATools for power flow, time-domain simulation, and eigenvalue analysis.

Mass-Matrix Differential-Algebraic Equation Formulation for Transient Stability Simulation

This letter proposes a mass-matrix differential-algebraic equation (DAE) formulation for transient stability simulation. This formulation has two prominent advantages: compatible with a multitude of implicit DAE solvers and can be conveniently implemented based on the traditional formulation, for example, by separating the parameters in denominators into the diagonals of the mass matrix. It also allows reducing the dynamics using null time constants. Benchmark studies are presented on the time and accuracy of 17 implicit solvers for the proposed formulation using the Kundur's two-area system and a 2,000 bus system.

On the Modeling and Simulation of Anti-Windup Proportional-Integral Controller

This paper investigates the chattering and deadlock behaviors of the proportional-integral (PI) controller with an anti-windup (AW) limiter recommended by the IEEE Standard 421.5-2016. Depending on the simulation method, the controller may enter a chattering or deadlock state in some combinations of parameters and inputs. Chattering and deadlock are analyzed in the context of three numerical integration approaches: explicit partitioned method (EPM), execution-list based method (ELM), and implicit trapezoidal method (ITM). This paper derives the chattering stop condition for EPM and ELP, and analyzes the impacts of step size and convergence tolerance for simultaneous method. The deduced chattering stop conditions and deadlock behavior is verified with numerical simulations.

A Graph Computation based Sequential Power Flow Calculation for Large-Scale ACDC Systems

This paper proposes a graph computation based sequential power flow calculation method for Line Commutated Converter (LCC) based large-scale AC/DC systems to achieve a high computing performance. Based on the graph theory, the complex AC/DC system is first converted to a graph model and stored in a graph database. Then, the hybrid system is divided into several isolated areas with graph partition algorithm by decoupling AC and DC networks. Thus, the power flow analysis can be executed in parallel for each independent area with the new selected slack buses. Furthermore, for each area, the node-based parallel computing (NPC) and hierarchical parallel computing (HPC) used in graph computation are employed to speed up fast decoupled power flow (FDPF). Comprehensive case studies on the IEEE 300-bus, polished South Carolina 12,000-bus system and a China 11,119-bus system are performed to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method

Cyber-Physical Testbed for Power System Wide-Area Measurement-Based Control Using Open-Source Software

The electric power system is a cyber-physical system with power flow in the physical system and information flow in the cyber. Simulation is crucial to understanding the dynamics and control of electric power systems yet the underlying communication system has historically been ignored in these studies. This paper aims at meeting the increasing needs to simulate the operations of a real power system including the physical system, the energy management system, the communication system, and the emerging wide-area measurement-based controls. This paper proposes a cyber-physical testbed design and implementation for verifying and demonstrating wide-area control methods based on streaming telemetry and phasor measurement unit data. The proposed decoupled architecture is composed of a differential algebraic equation based physical system simulator, a software-defined network, a scripting language environment for prototyping an EMS system and a control system, all of which are integrated over industry-standard communication protocols. The proposed testbed is implemented using open-source software packages managed by a Python dispatcher. Finally, demonstrations are presented to show two wide-area measurement-based controls - system separation control and hierarchical voltage control, in the implemented testbed.

Control and Limit Enforcements for VSC Multi-Terminal HVDC in Newton Power Flow

This paper proposes a novel method to automatically enforce controls and limits for Voltage Source Converter (VSC) based multi-terminal HVDC in the Newton power flow iteration process. A general VSC MT-HVDC model with primary PQ or PV control and secondary voltage control is formulated. Both the dependent and independent variables are included in the propose formulation so that the algebraic variables of the VSC MT-HVDC are adjusted simultaneously. The proposed method also maintains the number of equations and the dimension of the Jacobian matrix unchanged so that, when a limit is reached and a control is released, the Jacobian needs no re-factorization. Simulations on the IEEE 14-bus and Polish 9241-bus systems are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

An Optimal Framework for Residential Load Aggregator

Due to the development of intelligent demand-side management with automatic control, distributed populations of large residential loads, such as air conditioners (ACs) and electrical water heaters (EWHs), have the opportunities to provide effective demand-side ancillary services for load serving entities (LSEs) to reduce the emissions and network operating costs. Most present approaches are restricted to 1) the scenarios involving with efficiently scheduling the large number of appliances in real time, 2) the issues about evaluating the contributions of individual residents towards participating demand response (DR) program, and fairly distributing the rewards, and 3) the concerns on performing cost-effective demand reduction request (DRR) for LSEs with minimal rewards costs while not affecting their living comfortableness. Therefore, this paper presents an optimal framework for residential load aggregators (RLAs) which helps solve the problems mentioned above. Under this framework, RLAs are able to realize the DRR for LSEs to generate optimal control strategies over residential appliances quickly and efficiently. To residents, the framework is designed with probabilistic model of comfortableness, which minimizes the impact of DR program to their daily life. To LSEs, the framework helps minimize the total reward costs of performing DRRs. Moreover, the framework fairly and strategically distributes the financial rewards to residents, which may stimulate the potential capability of loads optimized and controlled by RLAs in demand side management. The proposed framework has been validated on several numerical case studies.
