Canonical metric connections with constant holomorphic sectional curvature

We consider the conjecture of Chen and Nie concerning the space forms for canonical metric connections of compact Hermitian manifolds. We verify the conjecture for two special types of Hermitian manifolds: complex nilmanifolds with nilpotent $J$, and non-balanced Bismut torsion-parallel manifolds.

A note on almost abelian groups with constant holomorphic sectional curvature

A long-standing conjecture in non-Kähler geometry states that if the Chern (or Levi-Civita) holomorphic sectional curvature of a compact Hermitian manifold is a constant $c$, then the metric must be Kähler when $c\neq 0$ and must be Chern (or Levi-Civita) flat when $c=0$. The conjecture is known to be true in dimension 2 by the work of Balas-Gauduchon, Sato-Sekigawa, and Apostolov-Davidov-Muskarov in the 1980s and 1990s. In dimension 3 or higher, the conjecture is still open except in some special cases, such as for all twistor spaces by Davidov-Grantcharov-Muskarov, for locally conformally Kähler manifolds (when $c\leq 0$) by Chen-Chen-Nie, etc. In this short note, we consider compact quotients $G/Γ$ where $G$ is a Lie group equipped with a left-invariant complex structure and a compatible left-invariant metric, and $Γ$ is a discrete subgroup. We confirm the conjecture when the Lie algebra ${\mathfrak g}$ of $G$ either is almost abelian, or contains a $J$-invariant abelian ideal of codimension 2.

On solvmanifolds with complex commutator and constant holomorphic sectional curvature

An old open question in non-Kähler geometry predicts that any compact Hermitian manifold with constant holomorphic sectional curvature must be Kähler or Chern flat. The conjecture is known to be true in dimension $2$ due to the work by Balas-Gauduchon and Apostolov-Davidov-Muskarov in the 1980s and 1990s, but is still open in dimensions $3$ or higher, except in several special cases. The difficulty in this quest for `Hermitian space forms' is largely due to the algebraic complicity or lack of symmetry for the curvature tensor of a general Hermitian metric. In this article, we confirm the conjecture for all solvmanifolds with complex commutator, extending earlier result on nilmanifolds by Li and the second named author.

Chern flat manifolds that are torsion-critical

In our previous work, we introduced a special type of Hermitian metrics called {\em torsion-critical,} which are non-Kähler critical points of the $L^2$-norm of Chern torsion over the space of all Hermitian metrics with unit volume on a compact complex manifold. In this short note, we restrict our attention to the class of compact Chern flat manifolds, which are compact quotients of complex Lie groups equipped with compatible left-invariant metrics. Our main result states that, if a Chern flat metric is torsion-critical, then the complex Lie group must be semi-simple, and conversely, any semi-simple complex Lie group admits a compatible left-invariant metric that is torsion-critical.

Streets-Tian Conjecture holds for 2-step solvmanifolds

A Hermitian-symplectic metric is a Hermitian metric whose Kähler form is given by the $(1,1)$-part of a closed $2$-form. Streets-Tian Conjecture states that a compact complex manifold admitting a Hermitian-symplectic metric must be Kählerian (i.e., admitting a Kähler metric). The conjecture is known to be true in dimension $2$ but is still open in dimensions $3$ or higher. In this article, we confirm the conjecture for all 2-step solvmanifolds, namely, compact quotients of 2-step solvable Lie groups by discrete subgroups. In the proofs, we adopted a method of using special {\em non-unitary} frames, which enabled us to squeeze out some hidden symmetries to make the proof go through. Hopefully the technique could be further applied.

Streets-Tian Conjecture on Lie algebras with codimension $2$ abelian ideals

A Hermitian-symplectic metric is a Hermitian metric whose Kähler form is given by the $(1,1)$-part of a closed $2$-form. Streets-Tian Conjecture states that a compact complex manifold admitting a Hermitian-symplectic metric must be Kählerian (i.e., admitting a Kähler metric). The conjecture is known to be true in dimension $2$ but is open in dimensions $3$ or higher in general, except in a number of special situations, such as twistor spaces (Verbitsky), Fujiki ${\mathcal C}$ spaces (Chiose), Vaisman manifolds (Angella-Otiman), etc. For Lie-complex manifolds (namely, compact quotients $G/Γ$ of Lie groups by discrete subgroups with left-invariant complex structures), the conjecture has also been confirmed in a number of special cases, including when $G$ is nilpotent (Enrietti-Fino-Vezzoni), when $G$ is completely solvable (Fino-Kasuya), or when $J$ is abelian (Fino-Kasuya-Vezzoni), or $G$ is almost abelian (Fino-Kasuya-Vezzoni, Fino-Paradiso), etc. In this article, we conduct a detailed case analysis and confirm Streets-Tian Conjecture for $G$ whose Lie algebra contains an abelian ideal of codimension $2$. Such Lie algebras are always solvable of step at most $3$, but are not $2$-step solvable and not completely solvable in general. Our approach is explicit in nature by describing both the Hermitian-symplectic metrics on such Lie algebras and the pathways of deforming them into Kähler ones, in hope of advancing our understanding of the subtlety and intricacy of this interesting conjecture in non-Kähler geometry.

A classification of locally Chern homogeneous Hermitian manifolds

We apply the algebraic consideration of holonomy systems to study Hermitian manifolds whose Chern connection is Ambrose-Singer and prove structure theorems for such manifolds. The main result (Theorem 1.2) asserts that the universal cover of such a Hermitian manifold must be the product of a complex Lie group and Hermitian symmetric spaces, which was previously proved up to complex dimension four by the authors. This in some sense is the Hermitian version of Cartan's classification of Hermitian symmetric spaces. We also obtain results on Hermitian manifolds whose Bismut connection is Ambrose-Singer when the complex dimension $n\le 4$. Furthermore we discuss a project of classifying such manifolds via Alekseevskiĭ and Kimel\!\'{}\!fel\!\'{}\!d type theorems, which we establish for the family of the Gauduchon connections on a compact Hermitian manifold except for the Bismut connection.

Fino-Vezzoni conjecture on Lie algebras with abelian ideals of codimension two

In this paper, we confirm the Fino-Vezzoni Conjecture for unimodular Lie algebras which contain abelian ideals of codimension two, a natural generalization to the class of almost abelian Lie algebras. This provides new evidence towards the validity of the conjecture on a very special type of $3$-step solvmanifolds.

A note on compact homogeneous manifolds with Bismut parallel torsion

In this article, we investigate the class of Hermitian manifolds whose Bismut connection has parallel torsion ({\rm BTP} for brevity). In particular, we focus on the case where the manifold is (locally) homogeneous with respect to a group of holomorphic isometries and we fully characterize the compact Chern flat {\rm BTP} manifolds. Moreover we show that certain compact flag manifolds are {\rm BTP} if and only if the metric is Kähler or induced by the Cartan-Killing form and we then characterize {\rm BTP} invariant metrics on compact semisimple Lie groups which are Hermitian w.r.t. a Samelson structure and are projectable along the Tits fibration. We state a conjecture concerning the question when the Bismut connection of a BTP compact Hermitian locally homogeneous manifold has parallel curvature, giving examples and providing evidence in some special cases.

Bismut Kähler-like manifolds of dimension 4 and 5

This paper is a sequel to our studies \cite{ZZ} and \cite{YZZ} on Bismut Kähler-like manifolds, or {\em BKL} manifolds for short. We will study the structural theorems for {\em BKL} manifolds, prove a conjecture raised in \cite{YZZ} which states that any {\em BKL} manifold that is Bismut Ricci flat must be Bismut flat, and give complete classifications of {\em BKL} manifolds in dimension $4$ and $5$.

Positively curved Kähler metrics on tube domains and their applications to optimal transport

In this article, we study a class of Kähler manifolds defined on tube domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, and in particular those which have $O(n) \times \mathbb{R}^n$ symmetry. For these, we prove a uniqueness result showing that any such manifold which is complete and has non-negative orthogonal bisectional curvature ($n \geq 3$) or non-negative bisectional curvature ($n \geq 2$) is biholomorphically isometric to $\mathbb{C}^n$. We also consider another curvature tensor called the \emph{orthogonal anti-bisectional curvature}. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a complete $O(n)$-symmetric tube domain to have non-negative orthogonal anti-bisectional curvature and provide several examples of complete metrics which satisfy this condition. Finally, we discuss some applications of these spaces within optimal transport. In particular, we study "synthetic" curvature bounds for non-smooth geometries and how they can be applied to the rough geometry induced by the Monge cost $c(x,y)=\|x-y\|$.

Strominger connection and pluriclosed metrics

In this paper, we prove a conjecture raised by Angella, Otal, Ugarte, and Villacampa recently, which states that if the Strominger connection (also known as Bismut connection) of a compact Hermitian manifold is Kähler-like, in the sense that its curvature tensor obeys all the symmetries of the curvature of a Kähler manifold, then the metric must be pluriclosed. What we actually showed is a bit more: for any given Hermitian manifold, the Strominger Kähler-like condition is equivalent to the pluriclosedness of the metric plus the parallelness of the torsion.

On Hermitian manifolds with Bismut-Strominger parallel torsion

In this article, we study Hermitian manifolds whose Bismut-Strominger connection has parallel torsion tensor, which will be called {\em Bismut torsion parallel manifolds,} or {\em BTP} manifolds for short. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition characterizing this class in terms of the curvature tensor. In particular, Bismut flat or Bismut Kähler-like manifolds are {\em BTP} manifolds, known by our earlier results. We also obtain structural results for non-balanced {\em BTP} manifolds, and classification theorems for non-balanced {\em BTP} threefolds and balanced {\em BTP} threefolds.

On Strominger space forms

In this article, we propose the following conjecture: if the Strominger connection of a compact Hermitian manifold has constant non-zero holomorphic sectional curvature, then the Hermitian metric must be Kähler. The main result of this article is to confirm the conjecture in dimension $2$. We also verify the conjecture in higher dimensions in a couple of special situations.

On a variational theorem of Gauduchon and torsion-critical manifolds

In 1984, Gauduchon considered the functional of $L^2$-norm of his torsion $1$-form on a compact Hermitian manifold. He obtained the Euler-Lagrange equation for this functional, and showed that in dimension $2$ the critical metrics must be balanced (namely with vanishing torsion $1$-form). In this note we extend his result to higher dimensions, and show that critical metrics are balanced in all dimensions. We also consider the $L^2$-norm of the full Chern torsion, and show by examples that there are critical points of this functional that are not Kähler.

On Strominger Kähler-like manifolds with degenerate torsion

In this paper, we study a special type of compact Hermitian manifolds that are Strominger Kähler-like, or SKL for short. This condition means that the Strominger connection (also known as Bismut connection) is Kähler-like, in the sense that its curvature tensor obeys all the symmetries of the curvature of a Kähler manifold. Previously, we have shown that any SKL manifold $(M^n,g)$ is always pluriclosed, and when the manifold is compact and $g$ is not Kähler, it can not admit any balanced or strongly Gauduchon (in the sense of Popovici) metric. Also, when $n=2$, the SKL condition is equivalent to the Vaisman condition. In this paper, we give a classification for compact non-Kähler SKL manifolds in dimension $3$ and those with degenerate torsion in higher dimensions. We also present some properties about SKL manifolds in general dimensions, for instance, given any compact non-Kähler SKL manifold, its Kähler form represents a non-trivial Aeppli cohomology class, the metric can never be locally conformal Kähler when $n\geq 3$, and the manifold does not admit any Hermitian symplectic metric.
