Drying Pathways of an Evaporating Soft Matter Droplet

Micro-droplets of soft matter solutions have different morphologies upon drying, and can finally become wrinkled, buckled or cavitated particles. We investigate the morphology evolution of a drying soft matter droplet in this work: at the early stage of drying, wrinkling or cavitation instability can occur in the droplet, depending on the comparison between the critical wrinkling and cavitation pressure; at a later stage of drying, no wrinkle will appear if cavitation happens first, while there can still be cavitation if wrinkling happens first. A three-dimensional phase diagram in the space of elastic length, gel layer thickness and weight loss is provided for illustrating these drying pathways of a soft matter droplet, which can guide future fabrications of micro-particles with desired morphologies.

Degenerate states, emergent dynamics and fluid mixing by magnetic rotors

We investigate the collective motion of magnetic rotors suspended in a viscous fluid under an uniform rotating magnetic field. The rotors are positioned on a square lattice, and low Reynolds hydrodynamics is assumed. For a $3 \times 3$ array of magnets, we observe three characteristic dynamical patterns as the external field strength is varied: a synchronized pattern, an oscillating pattern, and a chessboard pattern. The relative stability of these depends on the competition between the energy due to the external magnetic field and the energy of the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions among the rotors. We argue that the chessboard pattern can be understood as an alternation in the stability of two degenerate states, characterized by striped and spin-ice configurations, as the applied magnetic field rotates. For larger arrays, we observe propagation of slip waves that are similar to metachronal waves. The rotor arrays have potential as microfluidic devices that can mix fluids and create vortices of different sizes.

Clustering of Magnetic Swimmers in a Poiseuille Flow

We investigate the collective behavior of magnetic swimmers, which are suspended in a Poiseuille flow and placed under an external magnetic field, using analytical techniques and Brownian dynamics simulations. We find that the interplay between intrinsic activity, external alignment, and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions leads to longitudinal structure formation. Our work sheds light on a recent experimental observation of a clustering instability in this system.

Focusing and sorting of ellipsoidal magnetic particles in microchannels

We present a simple method to control the position of ellipsoidal magnetic particles in microchannel Poiseuille flow using a static uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field is utilized to pin the particle orientation, and the hydrodynamic interactions between ellipsoids and channel walls allow control of the transverse position of the particles. We employ a far-field hydrodynamic theory and simulations using the boundary element method and Brownian dynamics to show how magnetic particles can be focussed and segregated by size and shape. This is of importance for particle manipulation in lab-on-a-chip devices.

Far-field theory for trajectories of magnetic ellipsoids in rectangular and circular channels

We report a method to control the positions of ellipsoidal magnets in flowing channels of rectangular or circular cross section at low Reynolds number.A static uniform magnetic field is used to pin the particle orientation, and the particles move with translational drift velocities resulting from hydrodynamic interactions with the channel walls which can be described using Blake's image tensor.Building on his insights, we are able to present a far-field theory predicting the particle motion in rectangular channels, and validate the accuracy of the theory by comparing to numerical solutions using the boundary element method. We find that, by changing the direction of the applied magnetic field, the motion can be controlled so that particles move either to a curved focusing region or to the channel walls. We also use simulations to show that the particles are focused to a single line in a circular channel. Our results suggest ways to focus and segregate magnetic particles in lab-on-a-chip devices.

Nonlinear elasticity of semiflexible filament networks

We develop a continuum theory for equilibrium elasticity of a network of crosslinked semiflexible filaments, spanning the full range between flexible entropy-driven chains to stiff athermal rods. We choose the 3-chain constitutive model over several plausible candidates, and derive analytical expressions for the elastic energy at arbitrary strain, with the corresponding stress-strain relationship. The theory fits well to a wide range of experimental data on simple shear in different filament networks, quantitatively matching the differential shear modulus variation with stress, with only two adjustable parameters (which represent the filament stiffness and pre-tension in the network, respectively). The general theory accurately describes the crossover between the positive and negative Poynting effect (normal stress on imposed shear) on increasing the stiffness of filaments forming the network.

Stress relaxation, dynamics and plasticity of transient polymer networks

We propose a theoretical framework for dealing with a transient polymer network undergoing small deformations, based on the rate of breaking and re-forming of network crosslinks and the evolving elastic reference state. In this framework, the characteristics of the deformed transient network at microscopic and macroscopic scales are naturally unified. Microscopically, the breakage rate of the crosslinks is affected by the local force acting on the chain. Macroscopically, we use the classical continuum model for rubber elasticity to describe the structure of the deformation energy, whose reference state is defined dynamically according to when crosslinks are broken and formed. With this, the constitutive relation can be obtained. We study three applications of the theory in uniaxial stretching geometry: for the stress relaxation after an instantaneous step strain is imposed, for the stress overshoot and subsequent decay in the plastic regime when a strain ramp is applied, and for the cycle of stretching and release. We compare the model predictions with experimental data on stress relaxation and stress overshoot in physically bonded thermoplastic elastomers and in vitrimer networks.

The "coin-through-the-rubber" trick: an elastically stabilized invagination

A spectacular trick of close-up magicians involves the apparent passing of a coin through a rubber sheet. The magic is based on the unusual elastic response of a thin rubber sheet: the formation of an invagination, stabilized by friction and elasticity, which holds the coin. By pressing on the coin, the invagination becomes unstable, and the coin is released. We describe the deformation analytically using a simple Hookean description, and examine the stability of the invagination. We finally compare the prediction of the Hookean analysis with numerical solutions of the neo-Hookean model, and provide a brief commentary on the origins of the trick.

Phase diagrams in inflating balloon

Volume transition of an inflating cylindrical balloon made of rubber under external force $F$ is studied based on the non-linear elastic theory for rubber. The pressure difference $ΔP$ between inside and outside of the balloon is calculated as a function of the volume $V$ of the fluid inside the balloon. It is shown that if $F$ is smaller than a critical value $F_c$, the inflation of the balloon takes place with coexistence of strongly inflated region and weakly inflated region, while if $F$ is larger than $F_c$, the inflation takes place uniformly. It is shown that the critical force $F_c$ depends on the material parameter of the rubber, and that the discontinuous transition for finite stretching force can take place only when the rubber has enough stretchability
