A Reconstructed Discontinuous Approximation to Monge-Ampere Equation in Least Square Formation

We propose a numerical method to solve the Monge-Ampere equation which admits a classical convex solution. The Monge-Ampere equation is reformulated into an equivalent first-order system. We adopt a novel reconstructed discontinuous approximation space which consists of piecewise irrotational polynomials. This space allows us to solve the first order system in two sequential steps. In the first step, we solve a nonlinear system to obtain the approximation to the gradient. A Newton iteration is adopted to handle the nonlinearity in the system. The approximation to the primitive variable is obtained from the approximate gradient by a trivial least squares finite element method in the second step. Numerical examples in both two dimensions and three dimensions are presented to show an optimal convergence rate in accuracy. It is interesting to observe that the approximate solution is piecewise convex in each element. Particularly, with the reconstructed approximation space, the proposed method demonstrates a remarkable robustness. The convergence of the Newton iteration does not rely on the initial values, which shows a very different behaviour from references. The dependence of the convergence on the penalty parameter in the discretization is also negligible, in comparison to the classical discontinuous approximation space.

Solving Eigenvalue Problems in a Discontinuous Approximation Space by Patch Reconstruction

We adapt a symmetric interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin method using a patch reconstructed approximation space to solve elliptic eigenvalue problems, including both second and fourth order problems in 2D and 3D. It is a direct extension of the method recently proposed to solve corresponding boundary value problems, and the optimal error estimates of the approximation to eigenfunctions and eigenvalues are instant consequences from existing results. The method enjoys the advantage that it uses only one degree of freedom on each element to achieve very high order accuracy, which is highly preferred for eigenvalue problems as implied by Zhang's recent study [J. Sci. Comput. 65(2), 2015]. By numerical results, we illustrate that higher order methods can provide much more reliable eigenvalues. To justify that our method is the right one for eigenvalue problems, we show that the patch reconstructed approximation space attains the same accuracy with fewer degrees of freedom than classical discontinuous Galerkin methods. With the increasing of the polynomial order, our method can even achieve a better performance than conforming finite element methods, such methods are traditionally the methods of choice to solve problems with high regularities.

A Least Squares Method for Linear Elasticity using A Patch Reconstructed Space

We propose a discontinuous least squares finite element method for solving the linear elasticity. The approximation space is obtained by patch reconstruction with only one unknown per element. We apply the L 2 norm least squares principle to the stress-displacement formulation based on discontinuous approximation with normal continuity across the interior faces. The optimal convergence order under the energy norm is attained. Numerical results of linear elasticity are presented to verify the error estimates. In addition to enjoying the advantages of discontinuous Galerkin method, we illustrate the great simplicity in implementation, the robustness and the improved efficiency of our method.

A Sequential Least Squares Method for Poisson Equation using A Patch Reconstructed Space

We propose a new least squares finite element method to solve the Poisson equation. By using a piecewisely irrotational space to approximate the flux, we split the classical method into two sequential steps. The first step gives the approximation of flux in the new approximation space and the second step can use flexible approaches to give the pressure. The new approximation space for flux is constructed by patch reconstruction with one unknown per element consisting of piecewisely irrotational polynomials. The error estimates in the energy norm and $L^2$ norm are derived for the flux and the pressure. Numerical results verify the convergence order in error estimates, and demonstrate the flexibility and particularly the great efficiency of our method.

A finite element method by patch reconstruction for the Stokes problem using mixed formulations

In this paper, we develop a patch reconstruction finite element method for the Stokes problem. The weak formulation of the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin is employed. The proposed method has a great flexibility in velocity-pressure space pairs whose stability properties are confirmed by the inf-sup tests. Numerical examples show the applicability and efficiency of the proposed method.

A Discontinuous Galerkin Method by Patch Reconstruction for Biharmonic Problem

We propose a new discontinuous Galerkin method based on the least-squares patch reconstruction for the biharmonic problem. We prove the optimal error estimate of the proposed method. The two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical examples are presented to confirm the accuracy and efficiency of the method with several boundary conditions and several types of polygon meshes and polyhedral meshes.
