Quantum phase diagram of $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet in honeycomb lattice: a modified spin wave study

Using modified spin wave (MSW) method, we study the $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model with first and second neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. For symmetric $S=1/2$ model, with the same couplings for all the equivalent neighbors, we find three phase in terms of frustration parameter ${\barα=J_2/J_1}$: (1) a commensurate collinear ordering with staggered magnetization (N{é}el.I state) for $0\leq{\barα}\lesssim 0.207$ , (2) a magnetically gapped disordered state for $0.207\lesssim{\barα}\lesssim 0.369$, preserving all the symmetries of the Hamiltonian and lattice, hence by definition is a quantum spin liquid (QSL) state and (3) a commensurate collinear ordering in which two out of three nearest neighbor magnetizations are antiparallel and the remaining pair are parallel (N{é}el.II state), for $0.396\lesssim{\barα}\leq 1$. We also explore the phase diagram of distorted $J_1-J_2$ model with $S=1/2$. Distortion is introduced as an inequality of one nearest neighbor coupling with the other two. This yields a richer phase diagram by the appearance of a new gapped QSL, a gapless QSL and also a valence bond crystal (VBC) phase in addition to the previously three phases found for undistorted model.

Perfect quantum excitation energy transport via single edge perturbation in a complete network

We consider quantum excitation energy transport (EET) in a network of two-state nodes in the Markovian approximation by employing the Lindblad formulation. We find that EET from an initial site, where the excitation is inserted to the sink, is generally inefficient due to the inhibition of transport by localization of the excitation wave packet in a symmetric, fully-connected network. We demonstrate that the EET efficiency can be significantly increased up to %100 by perturbing hopping transport between the initial node and the one connected directly to the sink, while the rate of energy transport is highest at a finite value of the hopping parameter. We also show that prohibiting hopping between the other nodes which are not directly linked to the sink does not improve the efficiency. We show that external dephasing noise in the network plays a constructive role for EET in the presence of localization in the network, while in the absence of localization it reduces the efficiency of EET.

Comment on Activation of Visual Pigments by Light and Heat (Science 332, 1307-312, 2011)

It is known that the Arrhenius equation, based on the Boltzmann distribution, can model only a part (e.g. half of the activation energy) for retinal discrete dark noise observed for vertebrate rod and cone pigments. Luo et al (Science, 332, 1307-312, 2011) presented a new approach to explain this discrepancy by showing that applying the Hinshelwood distribution instead the Boltzmann distribution in the Arrhenius equation solves the problem successfully. However, a careful reanalysis of the methodology and results shows that the approach of Luo et al is questionable and the results found do not solve the problem completely.

Spin Hamiltonian, {Order Out of a Coulomb Phase} and Pseudo-Criticality in the Highly Frustrated Pyrochlore Heisenberg Antiferromagnet FeF$_{\bf 3}$}

FeF$_3$, with its half-filled Fe$^{3+}$ $3d$ orbital, hence zero orbital angular momentum and $S=5/2$, is often put forward as a prototypical highly-frustrated classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet. By employing {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT), we obtain an effective spin Hamiltonian for this material. This Hamiltonian contains nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg, bi-quadratic and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions as dominant terms and we use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the nonzero temperature properties of this minimal model. We find that upon decreasing temperature, the system passes through a Coulomb phase, composed of short-range correlated coplanar states, before transforming into an "all-in/all-out" (AIAO) state via a very weakly first order transition at a critical temperature $T_c\approx 22$ K, in good agreement with the experimental value for a reasonable set of Coulomb interaction $U$ and Hund's coupling $J_{\rm H}$ describing the material. Despite the transition being first order, the AIAO order parameter evolves below $T_c$ with a power-law behavior characterized by a pseudo "critical exponent" $β\approx 0.18$ in accord with experiment. We comment on the origin of this unusual $β$ value.

Noise Assisted Excitation Energy Transfer in a Linear Toy Model of a Selectivity Filter Backbone Strand

In this paper, we investigate the effect of noise and disorder on the efficiency of excitation energy transfer (EET) in a $N=5$ sites linear chain with "static" dipole-dipole couplings. In fact, here, the disordered chain is a toy model for one strand of the selectivity filter backbone in ion channels. It is recently discussed that the presence of quantum coherence in the selectivity filter is possible and can play a role in mediating ion-conduction and ion-selectivity in the selectivity filter. The question is "how a quantum coherence can be effective in such structures while the environment of the channel is dephasing (i.e. noisy)?" Basically, we expect that the presence of the noise should have a destructive effect in the quantum transport. In fact, we show that such expectation is valid for ordered chains. However, our results indicate that introducing the dephasing in the disordered chains leads to the weakening of the localization effects, arising from the randomness, and then increases the efficiency of quantum energy transfer. Thus, the presence of noise is crucial for the enhancement of EET efficiency in disordered chains. We also show that the contribution of both classical and quantum mechanical effects are required to improve the speed of energy transfer along the chain. Our analysis may help for better understanding of fast and efficient functioning of the selectivity filters in ion channels.

Comparing different modes of quantum state transfer in a XXZ spin chain

We study the information transferring ability of a spin-1/2 XXZ Hamiltonian for two different modes of state transfer, namely, the well studied attaching scenario and the recently proposed measurement induced transport. The latter one has been inspired by recent achievements in optical lattice experiments for local addressability of individual atoms and their time evolution when only local rotations and measurements are available and local control of the Hamiltonian is very limited. We show that while measurement induced transport gives higher fidelity for quantum state transfer around the isotropic Heisenberg point, its superiority is less pronounced in non-interacting free fermionic XX phase. Moreover, we study the quality of state transfer in the presence of thermal fluctuations and environmental interactions and show that measurement scheme gives higher fidelity for low temperatures and weak interaction with environment.

Measurement induced dynamics for spin chain quantum communication and its application for optical lattices

We present a protocol for quantum state transfer and remote state preparation across spin chains which operate in their anti-ferromagnetic mode. The proposed mechanism harnesses the inherent entanglement of the ground state of the strongly correlated many-body systems which naturally exists for free. The uniform Hamiltonian of the system does not need any engineering and, during the whole process, remains intact while a single qubit measurement followed by a single-qubit rotation are employed for both encoding and inducing dynamics in the system. This, in fact, has been inspired by recent progress in observing spin waves in optical lattice experiments, in which manipulation of the Hamiltonian is hard and instead local rotations and measurements have become viable. The attainable average fidelity stays above the classical threshold for chains up to length $~50$ and the system shows very good robustness against various sources of imperfection.

Valence Bond Phases in $S=1/2$ Kane-Mele-Heisenberg Model

The phase diagram of Kane-Mele-Heisenberg (KMH) model in classical limit~\cite{zare}, contains disordered regions in the coupling space, as the result of to competition among different terms in the Hamiltonian, leading to frustration in finding a unique ground state. In this work we explore the nature of these phase in the quantum limit, for a $S=1/2$. Employing exact diagonalization (ED) in $S_z$ and nearest neighbor valence bond (NNVB) bases, bond and plaquette valence bond mean field theories, We show that the disordered regions are divided into ordered quantum states in the form of plaquette valence bond crystal(PVBC) and staggered dimerized (SD) phases.

Zero Temperature Phase Diagram of the Classical Kane-Mele-Heisenberg Model

The classical phase diagram of the Kane-Mele-Heisenberg model is obtained by three complementary methods: Luttinger-Tisza, variational minimization, and the iterative minimization method. Six distinct phases were obtained in the space of the couplings. Three phases are commensurate with long-range ordering, planar N{é}el states in horizontal plane (phase.I), planar states in the plane vertical to the horizontal plane (phase.VI) and collinear states normal to the horizontal plane (phase.II). However the other three, are infinitely degenerate due to the frustrating competition between the couplings, and characterized by a manifold of incommensurate wave-vectors. These phases are, planar helical states in horizontal plane (phase.III), planar helical states in a vertical plane (phase.IV) and non-coplanar states (phase.V). Employing the linear spin-wave analysis, it is found that the quantum fluctuations select a set of symmetrically equivalent states in phase.III, through the quantum order-by-disorder mechanism. Based on some heuristic arguments is argued that the same scenario may also occur in the other two frustrated phases VI and V.

Noise-induced Synchronization in Small World Network of Phase Oscillators

A small-world network (SW) of similar phase oscillators, interacting according to the Kuramoto model is studied numerically. It is shown that deterministic Kuramoto dynamics on the SW networks has various stable stationary states. This can be attributed to the "defect patterns" in a SW network which is inherited to it from deformation of "helical patterns" in its parent regular one. Turning on an uncorrelated random force, causes the vanishing of the defect patterns, hence increasing the synchronization among oscillators for intermediate noise intensities. This phenomenon which is called "stochastic synchronization" generally observed in some natural networks like brain neuronal network.

Anderson Transition in Disordered Bilayer Graphene

Employing the Kernel Polynomial method (KPM), we study the electronic properties of the graphene bilayers in the presence of diagonal disorder, within the tight-binding approximation. The KPM method enables us to calculate local density of states (LDOS) without need to exactly diagonalize the Hamiltonian. We use the geometrical averaging of the LDOS's at different lattice sites as a criterion to distinguish the localized states from extended ones. We find that bilayer graphene undergoes Anderson metal-insulator transition at a critical value of disorder strength.

Variational RVB wave function for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg Model on honeycomb lattice

In this work, a long-range resonating valence bond state is proposed as a variational wave function for the ground state of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. Employing Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) method, we show that the ground state energy obtained from such RVB wave function, lies well below the energy of the Néel state and compares very well to the energies evaluated from spin-wave theory and series expansion method. We also obtain the spin-spin correlation function along zig-zag and armchair directions and find that the two correlations are different, which indicates the anisotropic nature of the system. We compare our results with the square lattice and we show that although the quantum fluctuations on honeycomb lattice are much stronger, but do not completely destroy the magnetic order.

Tricritical transition in the classical XY model on Kagomé lattice under local anisotropy

Using mean-field theory and high resolution Monte Carlo simulation technique based on multi-histogram method, we have investigated the critical properties of an antiferromagnetic XY model on the 2D Kagomé lattice, with single ion easy-axes anisotropy. The mean-field theory predicts second-order phase transition from disordered to all-in all-out state for any value of anisotropy for this model. However, Monte Carlo simulations result in first order transition for small values of anisotropy which turns to second order with increasing strength of anisotropy, indicating the existence of a tricritical point for this model. The critical exponents, obtained by finite-size scaling methods, show that the transition is in Ising universality class for large values of anisotropy, while the critical behaviour of the system deviates from 2D-$ϕ^6$ model near the tricritical point. This suggests the possibility for existence of a new tricritical universality in two-dimensions.

Phase synchronization on scale-free and random networks in the presence of noise

In this work we investigate the stability of synchronized states for the Kuramoto model on scale-free and random networks in the presence of white noise forcing. We show that for a fixed coupling constant, the robustness of the globally synchronized state against the noise is dependent on the noise intensity on both kinds of networks. At low noise intensities the random networks are more robust against losing the coherency but upon increasing the noise, at a specific noise strength the synchronization among the population vanishes suddenly. In contrast, on scale-free networks the global synchronization disappears continuously at a much larger critical noise intensity respect to the random networks.

Monte Carlo simulation of an strongly coupled XY model in three dimensions

Many experimental studies, over the past two decades, have constantly reported a novel critical behavior for the transition from Smectic-A phase of liquid crystals to Hexatic-B phase with non-XY critical exponents. However according to symmetry arguments this transition must belong to XY universality class. Using an optimized Monte Carlo simulation technique based on multi-histogram method, we have investigated phase diagram of a coupled XY model, proposed by Bruinsma and Aeppli (PRL {\bf 48}, 1625 (1982)), in three dimensions. The simulation results demonstrate the existence of a tricritical point for this model, in which two different orderings are established simultaneously. This result verifies the accepted idea the large specific heat anomaly exponent observed for SmA-HexB transition could be due to the occurrence of this transition in the vicinity of a tricritical point

Emergence of hexatic and long-range herringbone order in two-dimensional smectic liquid crystals : A Monte Carlo study

Using a high resolution Monte Carlo simulation technique based on multi-histogram method and cluster-algorithm, we have investigated critical properties of a coupled XY model, consists of a six-fold symmetric hexatic and a three-fold symmetric herringbone field, in two dimensions. The simulation results demonstrate a series of novel continues transitions, in which both long-range hexatic and herringbone orderings are established simultaneously. It is found that the specific-heat anomaly exponents for some regions in coupling constants space are in excellent agreement with the experimentally measured exponents extracted from heat-capacity data near the smecticA-hexaticB transition of two-layer free standing films
