How to Use Deep Learning to Identify Sufficient Conditions: A Case Study on Stanley's $e$-Positivity

In a study, published in Nature, researchers from DeepMind and mathematicians demonstrated a general framework using machine learning to make conjectures in pure mathematics. Here, we build upon this framework to develop a method for identifying sufficient conditions that imply a given mathematical statement. As a demonstration, we apply this process to Stanley's problem of $e$-positivity of graphs, one of the problems that has been at the center of algebraic combinatorics for the past three decades. Guided by AI, we rediscover that one sufficient condition for a graph to be $e$-positive is that it is co-triangle-free. Based on Saliency Map analysis, we suggest that the classification of $e$-positive graphs is more related to continuous graph invariants rather than the discrete ones, which we support it with three conjectures. Furthermore, we show that the claw-free and claw-contractible-free graphs with 10 and 11 vertices are $e$-positive, resolving a conjecture by Dahlberg, Foley, and van Willigenburg.

Extending the descent-to-peak map and its applications

The descent-to-peak map serves as a bridge between algebra and combinatorics. We use it as a tool for proving the equidistribution of peak and valley sets of standard Young tableaux with a very short argument. We also introduce a new shuffle basis of quasisymmetric functions whose elements are eigenvectors of the descent-to-peak map. Using this basis, we then extend the notion of the peak algebra and of the descent-to-peak map to shuffle, tensor, and symmetric algebras.

The peak algebra in noncommuting variables

The well-known descent-to-peak map $Θ_{\mathrm{QSym}}$ for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions, $\mathrm{QSym}$, and the peak algebra $Π$ were originally defined by Stembridge in 1997. We introduce their noncommutative analogues, the labelled descent-to-peak map $Θ_{\mathrm{NCQSym}}$ for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, $\mathrm{NCQSym}$, and the peak algebra in noncommuting variables $\mathrm{NC}Π$. Then, we define the Hopf algebra of Schur $Q$-functions in noncommuting variables. We show that our generalizations possess many properties analogous to their classical counterparts. Furthermore, we show that the coefficients in the expansion of certain elements of $\mathrm{NC}Π$ in the monomial basis of $\mathrm{NCQSym}$ satisfy the generalized Dehn-Sommerville equation of Bayer and Billera. In the end, we give representation-theoretic interpretations of the descent-to-peak map for the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions and noncommutative symmetric functions.

Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of the path graph

We show that the chromatic quasisymmetric function (CQF) of a labeled path graph on $n$ vertices is not symmetric unless the labeling is the natural labeling $1, 2, ..., n$ or its reverse $n, ..., 2, 1$. We also show that the star graph $K_{1, n-1}$ with $n\geq 3$ has a nonsymmetric CQF for all labelings.

The chromatic symmetric function of a graph centred at a vertex

We discover new linear relations between the chromatic symmetric functions of certain sequences of graphs and apply these relations to find new families of e-positive unit interval graphs. Motivated by the results of Gebhard and Sagan, we revisit their ideas and reinterpret their equivalence relation in terms of a new quotient algebra of NCSym. We investigate the projection of the chromatic symmetric function $Y_G$ in noncommuting variables in this quotient algebra, which defines $y_{G : v}$, the chromatic symmetric function of a graph G centred at a vertex v. We then apply our methods to $y_{G :v}$ and find new families of unit interval graphs that are (e)-positive, a stronger condition than classical e-positivity, thus confirming new cases of the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. In our study of $y_{G : v}$, we also describe methods of constructing new e-positive graphs from given $(e)$-positive graphs and classify the (e)-positivity of trees and cut vertices. We moreover construct a related quotient algebra of NCQSym to prove theorems relating the coefficients of $y_{G : v}$ to acyclic orientations of graphs, including a noncommutative refinement of Stanley's sink theorem.

The extra basis in noncommuting variables

We answer a question of Bergeron, Hohlweg, Rosas, and Zabrocki from 2006 to give a combinatorial description for the coproduct of the x-basis in the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, which arises in the theory of Grothendieck bialgebras. We achieve this using the theory of Hopf monoids and the Fock functor. We also determine combinatorial expansions of this basis in terms of the monomial and power sum symmetric functions in NCSym, and by taking the commutative image of the x-basis we discover a new multiplicative basis for the algebra of symmetric functions.

Generalized chromatic functions

We define vertex-colourings for edge-partitioned digraphs, which unify the theory of P-partitions and proper vertex-colourings of graphs. We use our vertex-colourings to define generalized chromatic functions, which merge the chromatic symmetric and quasisymmetric functions of graphs and generating functions of P-partitions. Moreover, numerous classical bases of symmetric and quasisymmetric functions, both in commuting and noncommuting variables, can be realized as special cases of our generalized chromatic functions. We also establish product and coproduct formulas for our functions. Additionally, we construct the new Hopf algebra of r-quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables, and apply our functions to confirm its Hopf structure, and establish natural bases for it.

P-partition power sums

We develop the theory of weighted P-partitions, which generalises the theory of P-partitions from labelled posets to weighted labelled posets. We define the related generating functions in the natural way and compute their product, coproduct and other properties. As an application we introduce the basis of combinatorial power sums for the Hopf algebra of quasisymmetric functions and the reverse basis, both of which refine the power sum symmetric functions. These bases share many properties with the type 1 and type 2 quasisymmetric power sums introduced by Ballantine, Daugherty, Hicks, Mason and Niese, and moreover expand into the monomial basis of quasisymmetric functions with nonnegative integer coefficients. We prove formulas for products, coproducts and classical quasisymmetric involutions via the combinatorics of P-partitions, and give combinatorial interpretations for the coefficients when expanded into the monomial and fundamental bases.

Schur functions in noncommuting variables

In 2004 Rosas and Sagan asked whether there was a way to define a basis in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables, NCSym, having properties analogous to the classical Schur functions. This was because they had constructed a partial such set that was not a basis. We answer their question by defining Schur functions in noncommuting variables using a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant. Our Schur functions in NCSym map to classical Schur functions under commutation, and a subset of them indexed by set partitions forms a basis for NCSym. Amongst other properties, Schur functions in NCSym also satisfy a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for classical Schur functions in terms of skew Schur functions. We also show how Schur functions in NCSym are related to Specht modules, and naturally refine the Rosas-Sagan Schur functions. Moreover, by generalizing Rosas-Sagan Schur functions to skew Schur functions in the natural way, we prove noncommutative analogues of the Littlewood-Richardson rule and coproduct rule for them. Finally, we relate our functions to noncommutative symmetric functions by proving a subset of our functions are natural extensions of noncommutative ribbon Schur functions, and immaculate functions indexed by integer partitions.

A categorification of the Malvenuto--Reutenauer algebra via a tower of groups

There is a long tradition of categorifying combinatorial Hopf algebras by the modules of a tower of algebras (or even better via the representation theory of a tower of groups). From the point of view of combinatorics, such a categorification supplies canonical bases, inner products, and a natural avenue to prove positivity results. Recent ideas in supercharacter theory have made fashioning the representation theory of a tower of groups into a Hopf structure more tractable. This paper applies such a program to the Malvenuto--Reutenauer Hopf algebra. In particular, we design functors on the representation theory of a tower of $p$-groups that realize the Hopf structure of the Malvenuto--Reutenauer algebra in such a way that its well-known fundamental basis corresponds to a supercharacter basis.

Hopf structures in the representation theory of direct products

Combinatorial Hopf algebras give a linear algebraic structure to infinite families of combinatorial objects, a technique further enriched by the categorification of these structure via the representation theory of families of algebras. This paper examines a fundamental construction in group theory, the direct product, and how it can be used to build representation theoretic Hopf algebras out of towers of groups. A key special case gives us the noncommutative symmetric functions NSym, but there are many things that we can say for the general Hopf algebras, including the structure of their character groups and a formula for the antipode.

Stable set polytopes and their 1-skeleta

We characterize the edges of two classes of $0/1$-polytopes. The first class corresponds to the stable set polytope of a graph $G$ and includes chain polytopes of posets, some instances of matroid independence polytopes, as well as newly-defined polytopes whose vertices correspond to noncrossing set partitions. In analogy with matroid basis polytopes, the second class is obtained by considering the stable sets of maximal cardinality. We investigate how the class of $0/1$-polytopes whose edges satisfy our characterization is situated within the hierarchy of $0/1$-polytopes. This includes the class of matroid polytopes. We also study the diameter of these classes of polytopes and improve slightly on the Hirsch bound.

Deletion-contraction for a unified Laplacian and applications

We define a graph Laplacian with vertex weights in addition to the more classical edge weights, which unifies the combinatorial Laplacian and the normalised Laplacian. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the weighted Laplacian characteristic polynomial in terms of weighted spanning forests and use this to prove a deletion-contraction relation. We prove various interlacing theorems relating to deletion and contraction, as well as to rectangular tilings, drawing on the work of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte on square tilings. Additionally, we show that the weighted Laplacian also satisfies a vertex analogue of deletion-contraction. We give applications of weighted Laplacian eigenvalues to sparse cuts, independent sets and graph colouring, and establish new cases of a conjecture of Stanley on distinguishing nonisomorphic trees.

Theta maps for combinatorial Hopf algebras

There is a very natural and well-behaved Hopf algebra morphism from quasisymmetric functions to peak algebra, which we call it Theta map. This paper focuses on generalizing the peak algebra by constructing generalized Theta maps for an arbitrary combinatorial Hopf algebra. The image of Theta maps lies in the odd Hopf subalgebras, so we present a strategy to find odd Hopf subalgebra of any combinatorial Hopf algebra. We also give a combinatorial description of a family of Theta maps for Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations $\operatorname{\mathsf{\mathfrak{S}Sym}}$ whose images are generalizations of the peak algebra. We also indicate a criterion to check whether a map is a Theta map. Moreover, precise descriptions of the Theta maps for the following Hopf algebras will be presented, Hopf subalgebras of quasisymmetric functions, commutative and co-commutative Hopf algebras, and theta maps for a Hopf algebra $\mathcal{V}$ on permutations.

Extended chromatic symmetric functions and equality of ribbon Schur functions

We prove a general inclusion-exclusion relation for the extended chromatic symmetric function of a weighted graph, which specializes to (extended) $k$-deletion, and we give two methods to obtain numerous new bases from weighted graphs for the algebra of symmetric functions. Moreover, we classify when two weighted paths have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions by proving this is equivalent to the classification of equal ribbon Schur functions. This latter classification is dependent on the operation composition of compositions, which we generalize to composition of graphs. We then apply our generalization to obtain infinitely many families of weighted graphs whose members have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions.

Positive Self-Dual Hopf Algebras of Galois Characters

By using the action of certain Galois groups on complex irreducible characters and conjugacy classes, we define the Galois characters and Galois classes. We will introduce a set of Galois characters, called Galois irreducible characters, and we show that each Galois character is a non-negative linear combination of the Galois irreducible characters. It is shown that whenever the complex characters of the groups of a tower produce a positive self-dual Hopf algebra (PSH), Galois characters of the groups of the tower also produce a PSH. Then we will classify the Galois characters and Galois classes of the general linear groups over finite fields. In the end, we will precisely indicate the isomorphism between the PSH of Galois characters and a certain tensor product of positive self-dual Hopf algebras.

Pattern groups and a poset based Hopf monoid

The supercharacter theory of algebra groups gave us a representation theoretic realization of the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. The underlying representation theoretic framework comes equipped with two canonical bases, one of which was completely new in terms of symmetric functions. This paper simultaneously generalizes this Hopf structure by considering a larger class of groups while also restricting the representation theory to a more combinatorially tractable one. Using the normal lattice supercharacter theory of pattern groups, we not only gain a third canonical basis, but also are able to compute numerous structure constants in the corresponding Hopf monoid, including coproducts and antipodes for the new bases.

The structure of normal lattice supercharacter theories

The character theory of finite groups has numerous basic questions that are often already quite involved: enumerating of irreducible characters, their character formulas, point-wise product decompositions, and restriction/induction between groups. A supercharacter theory is a framework for simplifying the character theory of a finite group, while ideally not losing all important information. This paper studies one such theory that straddles the gap between retaining valuable group information while reducing the above fundamental questions to more combinatorial lattice constructions.
