Quark fracture function at small $x$ from the Color Glass Condensate

The target-fragmentation region in deeply inelastic electron-nucleus scattering provides insight into the partonic structure of the target, as hadrons measured in the final state retain information about the nonperturbative dynamics of spectator partons inside the nucleus. In QCD factorization theorems, this nonperturbative dynamics is encoded in objects known as fracture functions. In this paper, we study the extended quark fracture function in the limit where the struck (anti)quark carries a very small longitudinal momentum fraction, $x$. We first present an elementary derivation within the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory of the quark fracture function in terms of the dipole operator at small $x$. At the parton level, the quark extended fracture function is sensitive to gluon saturation when the transverse momentum $P_\perp$ of the outgoing parton produced in the target-fragmentation region is smaller than the nuclear saturation scale $Q_s$, in which regime the $P_\perp$ distribution becomes approximately flat. We then show, through a numerical study that incorporates the convolution of this parton-level result with a collinear fragmentation function, that hadronization largely washes out these saturation effects, as the convolution predominantly probes partonic transverse momenta that are typically larger than $Q_s$.

Simultaneous Color Glass Condensate fit to deep inelastic scattering and forward hadron production at HERA, RHIC, and the LHC

We present the first simultaneous fit to deep inelastic scattering (DIS) reduced cross sections from HERA and forward single inclusive hadron production (SIHP) from RHIC and the LHC in which the dipole amplitude is obtained from Balitsky--Kovchegov (BK) evolution within the Color Glass Condensate effective theory. We demonstrate that, using the LO BK equation with running coupling (with or without kinematical constraint) and a constant per-collider $K$-factor accounting for higher-order corrections, a global $χ^2/\mathrm{d.o.f.}$ close to unity is achieved in both schemes. The required $K$-factors are about a factor of two larger at RHIC than at the LHC, remarkably in agreement with threshold-resummed one-loop studies of forward production. In our setup and with the data available, we find the two observables to be complementary: the SIHP data tighten the constraint on the evolution speed of the dipole amplitude without introducing tension with the DIS description. We further quantify the dependence of the $K$-factors on the fragmentation-function set and the factorization scale, identifying these as the dominant systematic uncertainties to be addressed in future precision analyses of forward hadron production. We perform a full uncertainty analysis using the Hessian method, validated against a Monte Carlo Bayesian inference study.

Forward trijet production in proton-nucleus collisions: gluon initiated channel

In this paper, we present results for the forward three-parton production differential cross section in the gluon-initiated channel in proton-nucleus collisions. This result is the leading-order contribution to forward trijet production and provides the real-emission building block required for the NLO dijet/dihadron cross section. The calculations are carried out within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective theory, and in the dilute-dense approximation, using effective vertices for the quark and gluon propagators interacting with the small-$x$ background gluon field. We employ the covariant perturbation theory approach and disentangle the amplitudes into regular and instantaneous contributions. Our results are expressed as convolutions of multiparton color correlators of light-like Wilson lines and perturbative impact factors, organized in compact expressions in terms of the ``bare" topologies of the contributing diagrams. The gluon-initiated channel receives contributions from a $q\bar{q}g$ and a $ggg$ final state. Interestingly, when considering the $ggg$ final state, we observe, for the first time, that the four-gluon vertex topology follows a structure similar to the instantaneous contributions. This observation suggests a simplification in the organization of multigluon CGC amplitudes and may prove useful for future one-loop calculations. Furthermore, when integrating (one of) the real gluon(s) in the final state, we identify that the rapidity divergence is absorbed into the real part of the JIMWLK evolution of the leading-order Wilson-line correlator. In addition, we isolate the divergences arising when the unobserved parton becomes collinear to one of the observed hadrons in the final state. These divergences are absorbed by renormalizing the initial-state parton distribution functions and final-state fragmentation functions, which are shown to obey DGLAP evolution.

TMD factorization in diffractive heavy-quark production in photon-nucleus collisions

Using the Colour Glass Condensate effective theory, we study the diffractive production of a massive quark-antiquark pair accompanied by a gluon in coherent photon-nucleus collisions at high energy. This partonic configuration provides the leading twist contribution to the cross section in the correlation limit where two of the partons are hard and nearly back to back in the transverse plane, while the third one is semi-hard, with a transverse momentum of the order of the nuclear saturation momentum. We consider two scenarios: (i) a hard quark-antiquark pair together with a semi-hard gluon; in this case we demonstrate transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization with a mass-dependent ''hard'' factor and the standard expression for the gluon diffractive TMD, and (ii) a hard antiquark-gluon pair and a semi-hard quark; in this case we find TMD factorization with a mass-independent ''hard'' factor and a mass-dependent quark diffractive TMD, which represents a new result. We show that increasing the quark mass reduces (or even washes out) the effects of gluon saturation on the quark diffractive TMD. In particular, it leads to the suppression of the Cronin peak that we observe in the massless limit. Our results are the basis for future phenomenological studies of quarkonium and open charm production in the saturation regime in ultraperipheral collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, and in deep inelastic scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider.

Unveiling the sea: universality of the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions at small $x$

Within the Colour Glass Condensate effective theory, we demonstrate that back-to-back dijet correlations in dilute-dense collisions involving a small-$x$ quark from the nuclear target can be factorised in terms of universal transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) for the sea quarks. Two building blocks are needed to construct all these TMDs at the operator level: the sea quark TMD operator which appears in semi-inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) or in the Drell-Yan process and the elastic $S$-matrix for a quark-antiquark dipole. Compared to SIDIS, the saturation effects are stronger for dijet production in forward proton-nucleus collisions, due to additional scattering in the initial and final state, effectively resulting in a larger value for the nuclear saturation momentum.

Small-$x$ factorisation in the target fragmentation region

We consider the differential cross-section for single-inclusive jet production with transverse momentum $P_\perp$ in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) at small Bjorken $x_{\rm Bj}$, mediated by a virtual photon with virtuality $Q^2$. Unlike most studies at small $x$, which focus on particle production in the current fragmentation region, we investigate the kinematic regime where the jet is produced in the target fragmentation hemisphere of the Breit frame, and with $P_\perp \ll Q$. For a longitudinally polarised photon, we demonstrate that this cross-section is not power suppressed in $P_\perp/Q$ and we derive a factorised expression in terms of extended quark and gluon jet fracture functions. Our formula, valid at next-to-leading order in $α_s$ at small $x$, is akin to the Altarelli-Martinelli identity for the longitudinal DIS structure function. Numerical estimates show that the extended quark jet fracture function is the most sensitive to saturation effects in large nuclei.

Global Bayesian Analysis of $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ Photoproduction on Proton and Lead Targets

We perform a global Bayesian analysis of diffractive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production in $γ+p$ and $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions using a color glass condensate (CGC) based calculation framework. As past calculations have shown that CGC-based models typically overpredict the $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production in $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at high center of mass energy, we address the question of whether it is possible to describe coherent and incoherent diffractive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ data from $γ+p$ collisions at HERA and the LHC, and from $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions at the LHC simultaneously. Our results indicate that a simultaneous description of $γ+p$ and $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ data is challenging, with results improving when an overall $K$-factor -- scaling $γ+p$ and $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ cross sections to absorb model uncertainties -- is introduced.

Probing gluon saturation with forward di-hadron correlations in proton-nucleus collisions

We present a detailed numerical investigation of semi-inclusive forward di-hadron production in proton-nucleus collisions employing the Color Glass Condensate effective theory. We focus on the regime where di-hadrons are produced nearly back-to-back in the transverse plane, thereby justifying a transverse-momentum-dependent factorization approach in terms of small-$x$ gluon distributions. Our computation integrates several key elements: i) non-linear rapidity evolution via the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation with running coupling, ii) both perturbative and non-perturbative Sudakov resummation, and iii) a phenomenologically constrained model for the initial conditions for small-$x$ gluon distributions. We compare this phenomenological framework to experimental data from the STAR Collaboration on azimuthal correlations in forward di-pion production in both proton-proton and proton-gold collisions. We analyze the systematic theoretical uncertainties associated with the saturation scales of nuclei at the initial scale for rapidity evolution and with those associated with the hadronization process. Finally, we make predictions for the kinematics anticipated to be covered by the ALICE Forward Calorimeter (FoCal) upgrade at the Large Hadron Collider.

Gluon splitting at small $x$: a unified derivation for the JIMWLK, DGLAP and CSS equations

We revisit the calculation of the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to dijet production in electron-ion collisions at small $x$. We focus on the back-to-back configuration where the relative transverse momentum $P_\perp$ of the measured jets is much larger than both their momentum imbalance $K_\perp$ and the target saturation momentum $Q_s(x,A)$. In this regime, we present for the first time a complete calculation of the real NLO corrections at leading power in $1/P_\perp$. Our result exhibits TMD factorisation, with the same hard factor as at tree-level and a NLO correction to the Weiszäcker-Williams (WW) gluon transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution which involves four Wilson-line operators. By studying different kinematical regimes for $K_\perp$ and for the radiated gluon, we recover all the quantum evolutions that were previously identified for this process at NLO: the B-JIMWLK high-energy evolution and the CSS evolution of the gluon WW TMD, and the DGLAP evolution of the gluon PDF. When both $K_\perp$ and the transverse momentum transferred by the target are large compared to $Q_s$, all the Wilson-line operators boil down to the unintegrated gluon distribution and our NLO result for the gluon TMD can be used to isolate the transverse-momentum dependent gluon splitting function.

Nuclear Suppression in Diffractive Vector Meson Production within the Color Glass Condensate Framework

We extend a recent global Bayesian analysis of diffractive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production in $γ+p$ and $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions within the color glass condensate (CGC) framework to investigate potential modifications of the nucleon structure inside nuclei. To this end, we perform fits that allow the effective nucleon structure parameters in Pb nuclei to differ from those of free protons. This approach directly addresses the question of whether the proton's spatial gluon distribution at intermediate to large $x$ is modified in the nuclear environment. We compare results obtained with shared and independent nucleon structure parameters and assess the impact on the simultaneous description of $γ+p$ data from HERA and the LHC, as well as $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ data from the LHC. Our findings show that there is no hint of difference in the nucleon structure beyond those already present in the CGC when embedding nucleons inside a nuclear environment.

Nuclear suppression in diffractive vector meson production within the color glass condensate framework

We perform a global Bayesian analysis of diffractive $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ production in $γ+p$ and $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ collisions within a Color Glass Condensate based framework. Using data from HERA and the LHC, we find that a simultaneous description of $γ+p$ and $γ+\mathrm{Pb}$ observables is challenging. Introducing a global $K$-factor to account for theoretical uncertainties improves the agreement with data and enhances the framework's predictive power. We present predictions for integrated $\mathrm{J}/ψ$ cross sections at different photon-nucleus energies and study their $A$-dependence relative to a no-saturation baseline, quantifying nuclear suppression and providing insights into the onset of saturation effects.

Color Glass Condensate meets High Twist Expansion

We establish the correspondence between two well-known frameworks for QCD multiple scattering in nuclear media: the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) and the High-Twist (HT) expansion formalism. We argue that a consistent matching between both frameworks, in their common domain of validity, is achieved by incorporating the sub-eikonal longitudinal momentum phase in the CGC formalism, which mediates the transition between coherent and incoherent scattering. We perform a detailed calculation and analysis of direct photon production in proton-nucleus scattering as a concrete example to establish the matching between HT and CGC up to twist-4, including initial- and final-state interactions, as well as their interferences. The techniques developed in this work can be adapted to other processes in electron-nucleus and proton-nucleus collisions, and they provide a potential avenue for a unified picture of dilute-dense dynamics in nuclear media.

Finite-size effects on small-$x$ evolution and saturation in proton and nuclear targets

Within the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory, we assess the importance of including a finite size for the target on observables sensitive to small-$x$ evolution. To this end, we study the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation with impact-parameter dependence in the initial condition. We demonstrate that neglecting the dependence on the impact parameter can result in overestimated saturation effects for protons, while it has little effect for heavy nuclei at the energies available at current experiments. When fixing the nonperturbative parameters to the energy dependence of the exclusive $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross section with proton targets, predictions for lead targets are not sensitive to the applied running-coupling prescription, the scheme chosen to resum large transverse logarithms in the BK equation, or the infrared regulator in the evolution.

Direct quarkonium production in DIS from a joint CGC and NRQCD framework

We compute the differential cross section for direct quarkonium production in high-energy electron-nucleus collisions at small $x$. Our computation is performed within the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism that separates the calculation into short distance coefficients and long distance matrix elements that depend on the color and spin of the state. We obtain the short distance coefficients of the production of the heavy quark pair within the framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory, which resums coherent multiple interactions of the heavy quark pair with the nucleus to all orders. Our results are expressed as the convolution of perturbatively calculable perturbative functions with multi-point light-like Wilson line correlators. In the correlation limit, we establish the correspondence between our CGC formulation with calculations employing the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) framework. We extend this correspondence by resumming kinematic power corrections within the improved TMD framework, which interpolates between the TMD formalism and $k_\perp$ factorization formalism. We present a detailed numerical analysis, focusing on $J/ψ$ production in the kinematics accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider, highlighting the importance of genuine higher-order saturation contributions when the electron collides with a large nucleus.

Spatial imaging of polarized deuterons at the Electron-Ion Collider

We study diffractive vector meson production at small-$x$ in the collision of electrons and polarized deuterons $e+d^{\uparrow}$. We consider the polarization dependence of the nuclear wave function of the deuteron, which results in an azimuthal angular dependence of the produced vector meson when the deuteron is transversely polarized. The Fourier coefficients extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the vector meson differential cross-section exhibit notable differences between longitudinally and transversely polarized deuterons. The angular dependence of the extracted effective deuteron radius provides direct insight into the structure of the polarized deuteron wave function. Furthermore, we observe slightly increased gluon saturation effects when the deuteron is longitudinally polarized compared to the transversely polarized case. The small-$x$ observables studied in this work will be accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Probing gluon saturation and nuclear structure in photon-nucleus collisions

We calculate exclusive vector meson photoproduction within the Color Glass Condensate framework in high-energy photon-nucleus scattering probed experimentally in ultra peripheral heavy ion collisions at RHIC and at the LHC. When the free parameters are constrained by the $γ+p$ data from HERA, we predict significant nuclear suppression for both the coherent and incoherent photoproduction cross section in the TeV range. Our results indicate that the LHC data prefers even stronger saturation effects at the highest collision energies. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the linear polarization of photons in ulra peripheral collisions generates azimuthal modulations in the decay products of the exclusively produced vector meson. We show how these measurements can probe details of the nuclear geometry, specifically the deformed structure of the uranium nuclei.

Dihadron correlations in small-$x$ DIS at NLO: transverse momentum dependent fragmentation

We compute inclusive dihadron cross-section in Deep Inelastic Scattering at next-to-leading order (NLO) and small $x$ in the Color Glass Condensate. We focus on the kinematic limit where the hadrons are produced at forward rapidities (in the direction of the virtual photon) and back-to-back in the transverse plane. Our calculation demonstrates that the coefficient of the Sudakov double logarithm for this process is $-\frac{α_s}{2π}\left[C_F+\frac{N_c}{2}\right]$ instead of $-\frac{α_s N_c}{4π}$ when back-to-back jets are measured in the final state. To preserve the universality of the Sudakov soft factor associated with the Weizsäcker-Williams transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon distribution, we promote the collinear fragmentation functions into TMD fragmentation functions. We then perform the resummation of the Sudakov logarithms through Collins-Soper-Sterman evolution of the TMD fragmentation functions and the Weizsäcker-Williams TMD gluon distribution. Finally, analytic expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient functions in the $\overline{\rm MS}$-scheme. These results pave the way towards numerically calculating dihadron correlations at small $x$ at the future Electron-Ion Collider with full NLO accuracy.

Gluon imaging using azimuthal correlations in diffractive scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider

We study coherent diffractive photon and vector meson production in electron-proton and electron-nucleus collisions within the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory. We show that electron-photon and electron-vector meson azimuthal angle correlations are sensitive to non-trivial spatial correlations in the gluon distribution of the target, and perform explicit calculations using spatially dependent McLerran-Venugopalan initial color charge configurations coupled to the numerical solution of small $x$ JIMWLK evolution equations. We compute the cross-section differentially in $Q^2$ and $|t|$ and find sizeable anisotropies in the electron-photon and electron-$\mathrm{J}/ψ$ azimuthal correlations ($v_{1,2} \approx 2 - 10 \%$) in electron-proton collisions for the kinematics of the future Electron-Ion Collider. In electron-gold collisions these modulations are found to be significantly smaller ($v_{1,2} <0.1 \%$). We also compute incoherent diffractive production where we find that the azimuthal correlations are sensitive to fluctuations of the gluon distribution in the target.
