Delay Performance Optimization for Multiuser Diversity Systems with Bursty-Traffic and Heterogeneous Wireless Links

This paper presents a cross-layer approach for optimizing the delay performance of a multiuser diversity system with heterogeneous block-fading channels and a delay-sensitive bursty-traffic. We consider the downlink of a time-slotted multiuser system employing opportunistic scheduling with fair performance at the medium access (MAC) layer and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) with power control at the physical layer. Assuming individual user buffers which temporarily store the arrival traffic of users at the MAC layer, we first present a large deviations based statistical model to evaluate the delay-bound violation of packets in the user buffers. Aiming at minimizing the delay probability of the individual users, we then optimize the AMC and power control module subject to a target packet-error rate constraint. In the case of a quantized feedback channel, we also present a constant-power AMC based opportunistic scheduling scheme. Numerical and simulation results are provided to evaluate the delay performance of the proposed adaptation schemes in a multiuser setup.

Joint Adaptive Modulation Coding and Cooperative ARQ over Relay Channels-Applications to Land Mobile Satellite Communications

In a cooperative relay network, a relay node (R) facilitates data transmission to the destination node (D), when the latter is unable to decode the source node (S) data correctly. This paper considers such a system model and presents a cross-layer approach to jointly design adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer and cooperative truncated automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the data link layer. We first derive a closed form expression for the spectral efficiency of the joint cooperative ARQ-AMC scheme. Aiming at maximizing this performance measure, we then optimize two AMC schemes for S-D and R-D links, which directly satisfy a prescribed packet loss rate constraint. As an interesting application, we also consider the problem of joint link adaptation and blockage mitigation in land mobile satellite communications (LMSC). We also present a new relay-assisted transmission protocol for LMSC, which delivers the source data to the destination via the relaying link, when the S-D channel is in outage. Numerical results indicate that the proposed schemes noticeably enhances the spectral efficiency compared to a system, which uses a conventional ARQ-AMC scheme at the S-D link, or a system which employs an optimized fixed rate cooperative-ARQ protocol.

Joint Adaptive Modulation-Coding and Cooperative ARQ for Wireless Relay Networks

This paper presents a cross-layer approach to jointly design adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) at the physical layer and cooperative truncated automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol at the data link layer. We first derive an exact closed form expression for the spectral efficiency of the proposed joint AMC-cooperative ARQ scheme. Aiming at maximizing this system performance measure, we then optimize an AMC scheme which directly satisfies a prescribed packet loss rate constraint at the data-link layer. The results indicate that utilizing cooperative ARQ as a retransmission strategy, noticeably enhances the spectral efficiency compared with the system that employs AMC alone at the physical layer. Moreover, the proposed adaptive rate cooperative ARQ scheme outperforms the fixed rate counterpart when the transmission modes at the source and relay are chosen based on the channel statistics. This in turn quantifies the possible gain achieved by joint design of AMC and ARQ in wireless relay networks.

Block Network Error Control Codes and Syndrome-based Complete Maximum Likelihood Decoding

In this paper, network error control coding is studied for robust and efficient multicast in a directed acyclic network with imperfect links. The block network error control coding framework, BNEC, is presented and the capability of the scheme to correct a mixture of symbol errors and packet erasures and to detect symbol errors is studied. The idea of syndrome-based decoding and error detection is introduced for BNEC, which removes the effect of input data and hence decreases the complexity. Next, an efficient three-stage syndrome-based BNEC decoding scheme for network error correction is proposed, in which prior to finding the error values, the position of the edge errors are identified based on the error spaces at the receivers. In addition to bounded-distance decoding schemes for error correction up to the refined Singleton bound, a complete decoding scheme for BNEC is also introduced. Specifically, it is shown that using the proposed syndrome-based complete decoding, a network error correcting code with redundancy order d for receiver t, can correct d-1 random additive errors with a probability sufficiently close to 1, if the field size is sufficiently large. Also, a complete maximum likelihood decoding scheme for BNEC is proposed. As the probability of error in different network edges is not equal in general, and given the equivalency of certain edge errors within the network at a particular receiver, the number of edge errors, assessed in the refined Singleton bound, is not a sufficient statistic for ML decoding.
