Demonstration of a Monolithic and Fully Telecom-Fiber-Compatible Tunable Source of Polarization Entangled Photon Pairs Based on a van der Waals Material

We present a tunable, single-mode-optical-fiber-based source of polarization entangled photon pairs for the near-infrared telecommunication band that is deployable in standard infrastructure. The photon pairs are generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a submicron-scale thin film of the inversion-broken rhombohedral polytype of the transition metal dichalcogenide molybdenum disulfide (3R-MoS$_2$), located between two fiber connectors. By exploiting the intrinsic symmetries of the second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor of 3R-MoS$_2$, this hybrid approach offers control over the generated two-photon polarization state through the incident pump polarization. Most notably, two of the four maximally entangled Bell states, as well as fully co-polarized pairs can be produced. This represents a substantial improvement in terms of tunability and simplicity over established fiber-integrated sources, which require additional optical elements, precise alignment, or careful engineering of design parameters. Additionally, a nonlinear drop in the background photoluminescence signal of 3R-MoS$_2$ is observed at low pump powers, allowing us to reach a coincidences-to-accidentals ratio (CAR) of $(8.3\pm1.8)\times10^{3}$, the highest value recorded for SPDC in van der Waals materials to date.

Sparse Spectral Imaging for Thickness Mapping of 3R-MoS$_2$ on PDMS

We present a non-destructive, spatially resolved thickness characterization method for rhombohedral (3R) molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates. Unlike broadband spectroscopic approaches, the proposed method reduces the measurement to a small number of discrete intensity images, enabling direct thickness mapping with a conventional microscope architecture and commercially available bandpass filters. Our approach combines a systematic framework for selecting optimal discrete wavelength samples of the material's reflectance with a robust thickness retrieval algorithm based on a multivariate Gaussian probability model. By sampling the reflectance with just five strategically chosen near-infrared bandpass filters, we demonstrate thickness characterization up to 691 nm with a mean 95% confidence-interval width of 8.3 nm. The method is adaptable to other van der Waals materials and conventional optical thin-film systems. It therefore provides a foundation for scalable, real-time thickness characterization in, e.g., dry-transfer fabrication workflows, where thickness screening remains a critical bottleneck for the production of van der Waals heterostructure devices.

Stabilizing van der Waals NbOI2 by SiO2 encapsulation for Photonic Applications

Niobium oxide diiodide (NbOI2) is an emerging material for photonics and electronics, distinguished by its exceptional second-order nonlinearity and pronounced in-plane ferroelectricity, both originating from its highly anisotropic ABC-stacked crystal structure. Its broken inversion symmetry enables its optical nonlinear efficiency to scale with thickness, making multilayer NbOI2 highly promising for nonlinear frequency conversion like second harmonic generation or and spontaneous parametric down-conversion in bulk or waveguides. However, under ambient conditions NbOI2 degrades into an amorphous oxide within weeks, severely diminishing its nonlinear response. To overcome this, we investigate SiO2 encapsulation via physical vapor deposition to protect NbOI2 multilayers from environmental degradation. Our systematic study reveals that encapsulation preserves structural integrity and nonlinear optical performance, establishing NbOI2 as a stable candidate for heterogeneous integration in foundry-compatible photonic platforms and quantum technologies.

Thickness-dependence of Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Multilayer 3R-MoS2

3R-MoS2, a MoS2 polytype with broken inversion symmetry, enables unique light-matter interactions and is promising for linear and nonlinear integrated photonics beyond the monolayer limit. Yet, systematic studies of its thickness-dependent reflectivity and its impact on harmonic generation are still lacking. . Yet, systematic studies of its thickness-dependent reflectivity and its impact on harmonic generation are still lacking. Here, we introduce a non-destructive optical method to determine the thickness of 3r-MoS2 flakes from reflectivity measurements, offering AFM-like precision with a mean bias of less than 2 nm range, while being much faster and applicable to non-solid substrates such as PDMS, in the 3-200 nm range. Nonlinear characterization further reveals distinct thickness-dependent maxima in second- and third-harmonic generation (SHG/THG), with the first clear peak at ~200 nm. These maxima arise from Fabry-Pérot-type phase matching conditions mediated by the film thickness and can further be shaped by absorption. This work thus provides both a practical thickness metrology and new insights for exploiting thickness-dependent 3R-MoS2 nonlinearities in scalable photonic technologies.

Structural and Optical Properties of Crystal Ion Sliced BaTiO$_3$ Thin Films

Barium titanate (BaTiO$_3$) is a compelling material for integrated photonics due to its strong electro-optic and second-order nonlinear properties. Crystal Ion Slicing (CIS) presents a scalable and CMOS-compatible route for fabricating thin BaTiO$_3$ films; however, ion implantation during CIS introduces lattice damage that can degrade structural and optical performance. In this study, we demonstrate that post-slicing thermal annealing effectively restores the structural integrity and optical quality of CIS-processed BaTiO$_3$ flakes. Raman spectroscopy confirms the recovery of crystallinity, while second-harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy reveals systematic reorientation of ferroelectric domains and restoration of the associated second-order nonlinear susceptibility tensor $X^{(2)}$. Notably, SHG signals persist even in regions with weak Raman signatures, indicating that long-range ferroelectric order can survive despite partial lattice disruption. Optical measurements show that the linear dispersion of annealed CIS flakes closely matches that of bulk BaTiO$_3$, validating their suitability for photonic integration. Together, these results qualify CIS - combined with thermal annealing - as a viable and scalable manufacturing strategy for high-quality BaTiO$_3$-on-insulator (BTOI) platforms, enabling advanced integrated photonic devices for modulation, frequency conversion, and quantum optics.

A Tunable Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Entangled Photon-Pair Source

Entangled photon-pair sources are at the core of quantum applications like quantum key distribution, sensing, and imaging. Operation in space-limited and adverse environments such as in satellite-based and mobile communication requires robust entanglement sources with minimal size and weight requirements. Here, we meet this challenge by realizing a cubic micrometer scale entangled photon-pair source in a 3R-stacked transition metal dichalcogenide crystal. Its crystal symmetry enables the generation of polarization-entangled Bell states without additional components and provides tunability by simple control of the pump polarization. Remarkably, generation rate and state tuning are decoupled, leading to equal generation efficiency and no loss of entanglement. Combining transition metal dichalcogenides with monolithic cavities and integrated photonic circuitry or using quasi-phasematching opens the gate towards ultrasmall and scalable quantum devices.

Enhanced Surface Second Harmonic Generation in Nanolaminates

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a second-order nonlinear optical process that is not allowed in media with inversion sym-metry. However, due to the broken symmetry at the surface, surface SHG still occurs, but is generally small. We experimentally investi-gate the surface SHG in periodic stacks of alternating, subwave-length dielectric layers, which have a large number of surfaces, thus enhancing surface SHG considerably. To this end, multilayer stacks of SiO2/TiO2 were grown by Plasma Enhanced Atomic Layer Deposition (PEALD) on fused silica substrates. With this technique individual layers of a thickness of less than 2 nm can be fabricated. We experimentally show that under large angles of incidence (> 20 degrees) there is substantial SHG, well beyond the level, which can be observed from simple interfaces. We perform this experiment for samples with different periods and thickness of SiO2/TiO2 and our results are in agreement with theoretical calculations.

The BSE-property for vector-valued $L^p-$algebras

Let $\mathcal A$ be a separable Banach algebra, $G$ be a locally compact Hausdorff group and $1< p<\infty$. In this paper, we first provide a necessary and sufficient condition, for which $L^p(G,\mathcal A)$ is a Banach algebra, under convolution product. Then we characterize the character space of $L^p(G,\mathcal A)$, in the case where $\mathcal A$ is commutative and $G$ is abelian. Moreover, we investigate the BSE-property for $L^p(G,\mathcal A)$ and prove that $L^p(G,\mathcal A)$ is a BSE-algebra if and only if $\mathcal A$ is a BSE-algebra and $G$ is finite. Finally, we study the BSE-norm property for $L^p(G,\mathcal A)$ and show that if $L^p(G,\mathcal A)$ is a BSE-norm algebra then $\mathcal A$ is so. We prove the converse of this statement for the case where $G$ is finite and $\mathcal A$ is unital.

Direct Growth of Monolayer MoS$_2$ on Nanostructured Silicon Waveguides

We report for the first time the direct growth of Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) monolayers on nanostructured silicon-on-insulator waveguides. Our results indicate the possibility of utilizing the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) on nanostructured photonic devices in a scalable process. Direct growth of 2D material on nanostructures rectifies many drawbacks of the transfer-based approaches. We show that the van der Waals materials grow conformally across the curves, edges, and the silicon-SiO$_2$ interface of the waveguide structure. Here, the waveguide structure used as a growth substrate is complex not just in terms of its geometry but also due to the two materials (Si and SiO$_2$) involved. A transfer-free method like this yields a novel approach for functionalizing nanostructured, integrated optical architectures with an optically active direct semiconductor.
