Out-of-plane Enhanced Magnetic Anisotropy Energy in Ni$_{3}$Bz$_{3}$ molecule

Organometallic complexes formed by transition metals clusters and benzene molecules have already been synthesized, and in selected cases display magnetic properties controlled by external magnetic fields. We have studied Ni$_n$Bz$_n$ complexes made of nickel atoms surrounded by benzene molecules and here we focus specifically on the magnetic molecule Ni$_{3}$Bz$_{3}$. By means of calculations including relativistic spin-orbit terms, we show that this molecule reveals a large magnetic anisotropy energy of approximately 8 meV, found with the easy axis perpendicular to the metal atoms plane. Note that the matching bare Ni$_{3}$ cluster have similar magnetic anisotropy, however the easy axis is in-plane. Covering with benzene molecules is thus switching the easy axis from in-plane for Ni$_3$ to out-of-plane for Ni$_{3}$Bz$_{3}$. The large out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy of Ni$_{3}$Bz$_{3}$ suggests that this molecule could indeed be used as part in the design of molecular magnetic memories.

Carbon Monosulfide Nanostructures: Chains Arrays, Monolayers, and Thin Films

Theoretical predictions have lead to the experimental synthesis of new low dimensional layered structures. Herein we show for the very first time that compounds of carbon monosulfide exhibit a great variety of layered nanostructures, such as chains arrays, monolayers, and thin films. We find that the chains arrays are the most stable because they are mainly dimensionality-driven by the $sp^2$ hybridization of sulfur and carbon orbitals. Furthermore, the chains arrays are direct gap semiconductors. In contrast to thin films, the monolayers are stable at room temperature with a semiconductor phase followed in energy by a metallic phase. Then, we achieve a semiconductor-to-metal phase transition in carbon sulfur monolayers, which can be driven by strain engineering controlling conductivity and carrier mobility.

An Array of Layers in Silicon Sulfides: Chain-like and Ground State Structures

While much is known about isoelectronic materials related to carbon nanostructures, such as boron nitride layers and nanotubes, rather less is known about equivalent silicon based materials. Following the recent discovery of phosphorene, we herein discuss isoelectronic silicon monosulfide monolayers. We describe a set of anisotropic ground state structures that clearly have a high stability with respect to the near isotropic silicon monosulfide monolayers. The source of the layer anisotropy is related to the presence of Si-S double chains linked by some Si-Si covalent bonds, which lye at the core of the increased stability, together with a remarkable spd hybridization on Si. The involvement of d orbitals brings more variety to silicon-sulfide based nanostructures that are isoelectronic to phosphorene, which could be relevant for future applications, adding extra degrees of freedom.

Substitutional 4d and 5d Impurities in Graphene

We describe the structural and electronic properties of graphene doped with substitutional impurities of 4d and 5d transition metals. The binding energy and distances for 4d and 5d metals in graphene show similar trends for the later groups in the periodic table, which is also well-known characteristic of 3d elements. However, along earlier groups the 4d impurities in graphene show very similar binding energies, distances and magnetic moments to 5d ones, which can be related to the influence of the 4d and 5d lanthanide contraction. Surprisingly, within the manganese group, the total magnetic moment of 3$μ_{B}$ for manganese is reduced to 1$μ_{B}$ for technetium and rhenium. We find that with compared with 3d elements, the larger size of the 4d and 5d elements causes a high degree hybridization with the neighbouring carbon atoms, reducing spin splitting in the d levels. It seems that the magnetic adjustment of graphene could be significantly different is 4d or 5d impurities are used instead of 3d impurities.

Chemical Bonding of Transition-metal Co$_{13}$ Clusters with Graphene

We carried out density functional calculation to study Co$_{13}$ clusters on graphene. We deposit several free isomers in different disposition respect to hexagonal lattice nodes, studying even the $hcp$ $2d$ isomer recently obtained as the most stable one. Surprisingly, Co$_{13}$ clusters bonded to graphene prefer $icosahedron-like$ structures where the low lying isomer is much distorted, because it is linked with more bonds than in previous works. For any isomer the most stable position binds to graphene by the Co atoms that can lose electrons. We find that the charge transfers between graphene and clusters are small enough to conclude that the Co-graphene binding is not ionic-like but chemical. Besides, the same order of stability among the different isomers on doped graphene is well kept. These findings could also be of interest for magnetic clusters on graphenic nanostructures such as ribbons and nanotubes.
