Anomalous tensile strength and thermal expansion, and low thermal conductivity in wide band gap boron monoxide monolayer

Most recently the formation of boron monoxide (BO) in the two-dimensional (2D) form has been confirmed experimentally (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2023, 145, 14660). Motivated by the aforementioned finding, herein we theoretically explore the key physical properties of the single-layer and suspended BO. Density functional theory (DFT) results reveal that BO monolayer yields a large indirect band gap of 3.78 (2.18) eV on the basis of HSE06(PBE) functional. Ab-initio molecular dynamics results reveal the remarkable thermal stability of the BO monolayer at 1000 K. The thermal and mechanical properties at room temperature are furthermore investigated using a machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP). The developed MLIP-based model close to the ground state could very precisely reproduce the DFT predictions for the mechanical properties of the BO monolayer. The elastic modulus, tensile strength and lattice thermal conductivity of the BO monolayer at room temperature are predicted to be 107 GPa, 25 GPa and 5.6 W/mK, respectively. At the room temperature the BO monolayer is noticeably predicted to yield an ultrahigh negative thermal expansion coefficient, by almost 17 folds larger than that of the single-layer graphene. The presented results reveal the large indirect electronic band gap, decent thermal and dynamical stability, anomalously low elastic modulus to tensile strength ratio, ultrahigh negative thermal expansion coefficients and low lattice thermal conductivity of the BO monolayer.

Comment on 'Erratum: 'Two-dimensional porous graphitic carbon nitride C6N7 monolayer: First-principles calculations' [Appl. Phys. Lett. 119, 142102 (2021)]'

Recently, Bafekry et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 120, 189901 (2022)] reported their density functional theory (DFT) results on the elastic constants of C6N7 monolayer. They predicted non-zero elastic constants along the out-of-plane direction for a single-layered material, which contradicts with basic physics of the stiffness tensor for plane stress condition. Moreover, in their work Young's modulus is erroneously calculated. On the basis of DFT calculations, herein we predicted the C11, C12 and C66 of the C6N7 monolayer to be 286, 73 and 107 GPa, respectively, equivalent with an in-plane Youngs modulus of 267 GPa. Using DFT calculations and a machine learning interatomic potential, we also show that C6N7 monolayer shows isotropic elasticity.

Comment on Two-dimensional porous graphitic carbon nitride C6N7 monolayer: First-principles calculations [Appl. Phys. Lett. 2021, 119, 142102]

Recently, Bafekry et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 119, 142102 (2021)] reported their density functional theory (DFT) results on the elastic constants of a novel C6N7 monolayer. They predicted a very soft elastic modulus of 36.29 GPa for the C6N7 monolayer, which is remarkably low for carbon-nitride 2D lattices. Using DFT calculations, we predict a remarkably higher elastic modulus of 267 GPa for this monolayer. The maximum tensile strength is also predicted to be 20.5 GPa, revealing the outstanding mechanical properties of the C6N7 monolayer.

Silicon diphosphide (SiP2) and silicon diarsenide (SiAs2): Novel stable 2D semiconductors with high carrier mobilities, promising for water splitting photocatalysts

Two dimensional (2D) semiconducting light absorbers, have recently considered as promising components to improve the efficiency in the photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting. In this work, by employing density functional theory computations, we introduced novel SiX2 (X = P, As) nanosheets in tetragonal (penta-) and orthorhombic (rec-) phases, as promising light absorber semiconductors for overall water splitting. The predicted nanomembranes exhibit good mechanical, dynamical and thermal stabilities. They also show small cleavage energies in the range of 0.31 J/m2 to 0.39 J/m2, comparable to that of the graphene and thus suggesting the feasibility of their experimental exfoliation. Notably, predicted monolayers are semiconductors with indirect band gaps of 2.65 eV for penta-SiP2, 2.35 eV for penta-SiAs2, 1.89 eV for rec-SiAs2, and a direct band gap of 2.21 eV for rec-SiP2. These nanomaterials however show relatively large interlayer quantum confinement effects, resulting in smaller band gap values for bilayer lattices. We observed a huge difference between the electron and hole mobilities for penta-SiP2 and rec-SiAs2 monolayers and highly directional dependent electron and hole mobilities in rec-SiP2, yielding an effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Remarkably, these novel nanomembranes show strong absorption in the visible region of light as well as suitable band edge positions for photocatalytic water splitting reaction, specifically under neutral conditions.

Experimental realization of single-layer MoSi2N4 is among the latest groundbreaking advances in the field of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Inspired by this accomplishment, herein we conduct first-principles calculations to explore the stability of MC2N4 (M= Cr, Mo, W, V, Nb, Ta, Ti, Zr, Hf) monolayers. Acquired results confirm the desirable thermal, dynamical and mechanical stability of MC2N4 (M= Cr, Mo, W, V) nanosheets. Interestingly, CrC2N4, MoC2N4 and WC2N4 monolayers are found to be semiconductors with band gaps of 2.32, 2.76 and 2.86 eV, respectively, using the HSE06 functional, whereas VC2N4 lattice shows a metallic nature. The direct gap semiconducting nature of CrC2N4 monolayer results in excellent absorption of visible light. The elastic modulus and tensile strength of CrC2N4 nanosheet are predicted to be remarkably high, 676 and 54.8 GPa, respectively. On the basis of iterative solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation, the room temperature lattice thermal conductivity of CrC2N4 monolayer is predicted to be 350 W/mK, among the highest in 2D semiconductors. CrC2N4 and WC2N4 lattices are also found to exhibit outstandingly high piezoelectric coefficients. This study introduces CrC2N4 nanosheet as a novel 2D semiconductor with outstandingly high mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, carrier mobility and piezoelectric coefficient.

High tensile strength and thermal conductivity in BeO monolayer: A first-principles study

In a latest experimental advance, graphene-like and insulating BeO monolayer was successfully grown over silver surface by molecular beam epitaxy (ACS Nano 15(2021), 2497). Inspired by this accomplishment, in this work we conduct first-principles based simulations to explore the electronic, mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of graphene-like BeO, MgO and CaO monolayers. The considered nanosheets are found to show desirable thermal and dynamical stability. BeO monolayer is found to show remarkably high elastic modulus and tensile strength of 408 and 53.3 GPa, respectively. The electronic band gap of BeO, MgO and CaO monolayers are predicted to be 6.72, 4.79, and 3.80 eV, respectively, using the HSE06 functional. On the basis of iterative solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation, the room temperature lattice thermal conductivity of BeO, MgO and CaO monolayers are predicted to be 385, 64 and 15 W/mK, respectively. Our results reveal substantial decline in the electronic band gap, mechanical strength and thermal conductivity by increasing the weight of metal atoms. This work highlights outstandingly high thermal conductivity, carrier mobility and mechanical strength of insulating BeO nanosheets and suggest them as promising candidates to design strong and insulating components with high thermal conductivities.

Beryllium polynitrides, BeN4 is a novel layered material, which has been most recently fabricated under high pressure (Phys. Rev. Lett. 126(2021), 175501). As a new class of 2D materials, in this work we conduct first-principles calculations to examine the stability and explore the electronic nature of MN4 (M= Be, Mg, Ir, Rh, Ni, Cu, Au, Pd, Pt) monolayers. Acquired results confirm the dynamical and thermal stability of BeN4, MgN4, IrN4, PtN4 and RhN4 monolayers. Interestingly, BeN4 and MgN4 monolayers are found to show anisotropic Dirac cones in their electronic structure. While PtN4 monolayer is predicted to be a narrow band-gap semiconductor, IrN4 and RhN4 monolayers are found to be metallic systems. We also elaborately explore the effects of number of atomic layers on the electronic features of BeN4 nanosheets, which reveal highly appealing physics. Our results highlight that BeN4 nanosheet yield ultrahigh elastic modulus and mechanical strength, outperforming all other carbon-free 2D materials. Notably, RhN4 nanosheet is predicted to yield high capacities of 562, 450 and 900 mAh/g, for Li, Na and Ca ions storages, respectively. This study provides a comprehensive understanding on the intrinsic properties of MN4 nanosheets and highlight their outstanding physics.

Graphdiyne nanomaterials are low density and highly porous carbon-based two-dimensional (2D) materials, with outstanding application prospects for electronic and energy storage/conversion systems. In two latest scientific advances, large-area pyrenyl graphdiyne (Pyr-GDY) and pyrazinoquinoxaline graphdiyne (PQ-GDY) nanosheets have been successfully fabricated. As the first theoretical study, herein we conduct first-principles simulations to explore the stability and electronic, optical and mechanical properties of Pyr-GDY, N-Pyr-GDY, PQ-GDY and N-Pyr-GYN monolayers. We particularly examine the intrinsic properties of PQ-graphyne (PQ-GYN) and Pyr-graphyne (Pyr-GYN) monolayers. Acquired results confirm desirable dynamical and thermal stability and high mechanical strength of these novel nanosheets, owing to their strong covalent networks. We show that Pyr-based lattices can show high stretchability. Analysis of optical results also confirm the suitability of Pyr- and PQ-GDY/GYN nanosheets to adsorb in the near-IR, visible, and UV range of light. Notably, PQ-GDY is found to exhibit distorted Dirac cone and highly anisotropic fermi velocities. First-principles results reveal ultrahigh carrier mobilities along the considered nanoporous nanomembranes, particularly PQ-GYN monolayer is predicted to outperform phosphorene and MoS2. Acquired results introduce pyrenyl and pyrazinoquinoxaline graphyne/graphyne as promising candidates to design novel nanoelectronics and energy storage/conversion systems.

Exceptional piezoelectricity, high thermal conductivity and stiffness and promising photocatalysis in two-dimensional MoSi2N4 family confirmed by first-principles

Chemical vapor deposition has been most recently employed to fabricate centimeter-scale high-quality single-layer MoSi2N4 (Science; 2020;369; 670). Motivated by this exciting experimental advance, herein we conduct extensive first-principles based simulations to explore the stability, mechanical properties, lattice thermal conductivity, piezoelectric and flexoelectric response, and photocatalytic and electronic features of MA2Z4 (M = Cr, Mo, W; A = Si, Ge; Z = N, P) monolayers. The considered nanosheets are found to exhibit dynamical stability and remarkably high mechanical properties. Moreover, they show diverse electronic properties from antiferromagnetic metal to half metal and to semiconductors with band gaps ranging from 0.31 to 2.57 eV. Among the studied nanosheets, the MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 monolayers yield appropriate band edge positions, high electron and hole mobilities, and strong visible light absorption, highly promising for applications in optoelectronics and photocatalytic water splitting. The MoSi2N4 and WSi2N4 monolayers are also predicted to show outstandingly high lattice thermal conductivity of 440 and 500 W/mK, respectively. For the first time we show that machine learning interatomic potentials trained over small supercells can be employed to examine the flexoelectric and piezoelectric properties of complex structures. As the most exciting finding, WSi2N4, CrSi2N4 and MoSi2N4 are found to exhibit the highest piezoelectric coefficients, outperforming all other-known 2D materials. Our results highlight that MA2Z4 nanosheets not only undoubtedly outperform the transition metal dichalcogenides family but also can compete with graphene for applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronic, energy storage/conversion and thermal management systems.

High thermal conductivity in semiconducting Janus and non-Janus diamanes

Most recently, F-diamane monolayer was experimentally realized by the fluorination of bilayer graphene. In this work we elaborately explore the electronic and thermal conductivity responses of diamane lattices with homo or hetero functional groups, including: non-Janus C2H, C2F and C2Cl diamane and Janus counterparts of C4HF, C4HCl and C4FCl. Noticeably, C2H, C2F, C2Cl, C4HF, C4HCl and C4FCl diamanes are found to show electronic diverse band gaps of, 3.86, 5.68, 2.42, 4.17, 0.86, and 2.05 eV, on the basis of HSE06 method estimations. The thermal conductivity of diamane nanosheets was acquired using the full iterative solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation, with substantially accelerated calculations by employing machine-learning interatomic potentials in obtaining the anharmonic force constants. According to our results, the room temperature lattice thermal conductivity of graphene and C2H, C2F, C2Cl, C4HF, C4HCl and C4FCl diamane monolayers are estimated to be 3636, 1145, 377, 146, 454, 244 and 196 W/mK, respectively. The underlying mechanisms resulting in significant effects of functional groups on the thermal conductivity of diamane nanosheets were thoroughly explored. Our results highlight the substantial role of functional groups on the electronic and thermal conduction responses of diamane nanosheets.

Nanoporous C3N4, C3N5 and C3N6 nanosheets; Novel strong semiconductors with low thermal conductivities and appealing optical/electronic properties

Carbon nitride two-dimensional (2D) materials are among the most attractive class of nanomaterials, with wide range of application prospects. As a continuous progress, most recently, two novel carbon nitride 2D lattices of C3N5 and C3N4 have been successfully experimentally realized. Motivated by these latest accomplishments and also by taking into account the well-known C3N4 triazine-based graphitic carbon nitride structures, we predicted two novel C3N6 and C3N4 counterparts. We then conducted extensive density functional theory simulations to explore the thermal stability, mechanical, electronic and optical properties of these novel nanoporous carbon-nitride nanosheets. According to our results all studied nanosheets were found to exhibit desirable thermal stability and mechanical properties. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations on the basis of machine learning interatomic potentials predict ultralow thermal conductivities for these novel nanosheets. Electronic structure analyses confirm direct band gap semiconducting electronic character and optical calculations reveal the ability of these novel 2D systems to adsorb visible range of light. Extensive first-principles based results by this study provide a comprehensive vision on the stability, mechanical, electronic and optical responses of C3N4, C3N5 and C3N6 as novel 2D semiconductors and suggest them as promising candidates for the design of advanced nanoelectronics and energy storage/conversion systems.

As2S3, As2Se3 and As2Te3 nanosheets: Superstretchable semiconductors with anisotropic carrier mobilities and optical properties

In this work, density functional theory calculations were carried out to explore the mechanical response, dynamical/thermal stability, electronic/optical properties and photocatalytic features of monoclinic As2X3 (X=S, Se and Te) nanosheets. Acquired phonon dispersions and ab-initio molecular dynamics results confirm the stability of studied nanomembranes. Observation of relatively weak interlayer interactions suggests that the exfoliation techniques can be potentially employed to fabricate nanomembranes from their bulk counterparts. The studied nanosheets were found to show highly anisotropic mechanical properties. Notably, new As2Te3 2D lattice predicted by this study is found to exhibit unique superstretchability, which outperforms other 2D materials. In addition, our results on the basis of HSE06 functional reveal the indirect semiconducting electronic nature for the monolayer to few-layer and bulk structures of As2X3, in which a moderate decreasing trend in the band-gap by increasing the thickness can be established. The studied nanomaterials were found to show remarkably high and anisotropic carrier mobilities. Moreover, optical results show that these nanosheets can absorb the visible light. In particular, the valence and conduction band edge positions, high carrier mobilities and optical responses of As2Se3 nanosheets were found to be highly desirable for the solar water splitting. The comprehensive vision provided by this study not only confirm the stability and highly attractive electronic and optical characteristics of As2S3, As2Se3 and As2Te3 nanosheets, but also offer new possibilities to design superstretchable nanodevices.

Stability Trend of Tilted Perovskites

Halide perovskites, with prototype cubic phase ABX3, undergo various phase transitions accompanied by rigid rotations of corner-sharing BX6 octahedra. Using first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have performed a comprehensive investigation of all the possible octahedral tilting in eighteen halide perovskites ABX3 (A = Cs, Rb, K; B= Pb, Sn; X= I, Br, Cl) and found that the stabilization energies i.e. energy differences between cubic and the most stable tilted phases, are linearly correlated with tolerance factor t. Moreover, the tilt energies i.e. energy differences between cubic and various tilted phases, are linearly correlated with the change of atomic packing fractions (Δη), confirming the importance of atomic packing fraction as part of stability descriptor (t+μ)η, proposed in our previous work [JACS 139, 14905 (2017)]. We further demonstrate that (t+μ)ηremains the best stability descriptor for tilted perovskites among descriptor candidates of η, μ, t, and t+μ,extending previously proposed stability trend from cubic phases to tilted phases in general perovskites.
