Foliar Uptake of Biocides: Statistical Assessment of Compartmental and Diffusion-Based Models

The global population increase leads to a high food demand, and to reach this target products such as pesticides are needed to protect the crops. Research is focusing on the development of new products that can be less harmful to the environment, and mathematical models are tools that can help to understand the mechanism of uptake of pesticides and then guide in the product development phase. This paper applies a systematic methodology to model the foliar uptake of pesticides, to take into account the uncertainties in the experimental data and in the model structure. A comparison between different models is conducted, focusing on the identifiability of model parameters through dynamic sensitivity profiles and correlation analysis. Lastly, data augmentation studies are conducted to exploit the model for the design of experiments and to provide a practical support to future experimental campaigns, paving the way for further application of model-based design of experiments techniques in the context of foliar uptake.

Co--propagating Bose--Einstein Condensates and electromagnetic radiation: Emission of mutually localized structures

Using a semi-classical model to describe the interaction between coherent electromagnetic radiation and a Bose-Einstein condensate in the limit of zero temperature, including the back action of the atoms on the radiation, we have analyzed the phenomenon of emission of solitary-like wave packets which can accompany the formation of mutually localized atom-laser structures.

Laser acceleration of ion bunches at the front surface of overdense plasmas

The acceleration of ions in the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with overdense plasmas is investigated with particle-in-cell simulations. For circular polarization of the laser pulses, high-density ion bunches moving into the plasma are generated at the laser-plasma interaction surface. A simple analytical model accounts for the numerical observations and provides scaling laws for the ion bunch energy and generation time as a function of pulse intensity and plasma density.

Coupled-mode theory for Bose-Einstein condensates

We apply the concepts of nonlinear guided-wave optics to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an external potential. As an example, we consider a parabolic double-well potential and derive coupled-mode equations for the complex amplitudes of the BEC macroscopic collective modes. Our equations describe different regimes of the condensate dynamics, including the nonlinear Josephson effect for any separation between the wells. We demonstrate macroscopic self-trapping for both repulsive and attractive interactions, and confirm our results by numerical simulations.
