A Bismut-Elworthy formula for BSDEs with degenerate noise

In this paper we derive a Bismut-Elworthy formula under assumptions weaker than the non degeneracy of the noise. By Bismut-Elworthy formula we mean a gradient type estimate on the transition semigroup of a stochastic differential equation in a possibly infinite dimensional Hilbert space. We also consider a nonlinear version of the Bismut formula for a backward stochastic differential equation, in analogy to what is done in \cite{futeBismut}, where a non-degenerate noise is considered. Our study is motivated by applications to stochastic wave equations and to stochastic damped wave equation.

Peng's Maximum Principle for Stochastic Delay Differential Equations of Mean-Field Type

We extend Peng's maximum principle to the case of stochastic delay differential equations of mean-field type. More precisely, the coefficients of our control problem depend on the state, on the past trajectory and on its expected value. Moreover, the control enters the noise coefficient and the control domain may be non-convex. Our approach is based on a lifting of the state equation to an infinite dimensional Hilbert space that removes the explicit delay in the state equation. The main ingredient in the proof of the maximum principle is a precise asymptotic for the expectation of the first order variational process, which allows us to neglect the corresponding second order terms in the expansion of the cost functional.

Lifting partial smoothing to solve HJB equations and stochastic control problems

We study a family of stochastic control problems arising in typical applications (such as boundary control and control of delay equations with delay in the control) with the ultimate aim of finding solutions of the associated HJB equations, regular enough to find optimal feedback controls. These problems are difficult to treat since the underlying transition semigroups do not possess good smoothing properties nor the so-called "structure condition" which typically allows to apply the backward equations approach. In the papers [14], [15], and, more recently, [16] we studied such problems developing new partial smoothing techniques which allowed us to obtain the required regularity in the case when the cost functional is independent of the state variable. This is a somehow strong restriction which is not verified in most applications. In this paper (which can be considered a continuation of the research of the above papers) we develop a new approach to overcome this restriction. We extend the partial smoothing result to a wider class of functions which depend on the whole trajectory of the underlying semigroup and we use this as a key tool to improve our regularity result for the HJB equation. The fact that such class depends on trajectories requires a nontrivial technical work as we have to lift the original transition semigroup to a space of trajectories, defining a new "high-level" environment where our problems can be solved.

Stochastic Maximum Principle for optimal advertising models with delay and non-convex control space

In this paper we study optimal advertising problems that models the introduction of a new product into the market in the presence of carryover effects of the advertisement and with memory effects in the level of goodwill. In particular, we let the dynamics of the product goodwill to depend on the past, and also on past advertising efforts. We treat the problem by means of the stochastic Pontryagin maximum principle, that here is considered for a class of problems where in the state equation either the state or the control depend on the past. Moreover the control acts on the martingale term and the space of controls can be chosen to be non-convex. The maximum principle is thus formulated using a first-order adjoint Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs), which can be explicitly computed due to the specific characteristics of the model, and a second-order adjoint relation.

An optimal advertising model with carryover effect and mean field terms

We consider a class of optimal advertising problems under uncertainty for the introduction of a new product into the market, on the line of the seminal papers of Vidale and Wolfe, 1957, and Nerlove and Arrow, 1962. The main features of our model are that, on one side, we assume a carryover effect (i.e. the advertisement spending affects the goodwill with some delay); on the other side we introduce, in the state equation and in the objective, some mean field terms which take into account the presence of other agents. We take the point of view of a planner who optimizes the average profit of all agents, hence we fall into the family of the so-called "Mean Field Control" problems. The simultaneous presence of the carryover effect makes the problem infinite dimensional hence belonging to a family of problems which are very difficult in general and whose study started only very recently, see Cosso et Al, 2023. Here we consider, as a first step, a simple version of the problem providing the solutions in a simple case through a suitable auxiliary problem.

Stochastic maximum principle for problems with delay with general dependence on the past

We prove a stochastic maximum principle for a control problem where the state equation is delayed both in the state and in the control, and also the final cost functional may depend on the past trajectories. The adjoint equations turn out to be a new form of linear anticipated backward stochastic differential equations (ABSDEs in the following), and we prove a direct formula to solve these equations.

A BSDEs approach to pathwise uniqueness for stochastic evolution equations

We prove strong well-posedness for a class of stochastic evolution equations in Hilbert spaces H when the drift term is Holder continuous. This class includes examples of semilinear stochastic damped wave equations which describe elastic systems with structural damping (for such equations even existence of solutions in the linear case is a delicate issue) and semilinear stochastic 3D heat equations. In the deterministic case, there are examples of non-uniqueness in our framework. Strong (or pathwise) uniqueness is restored by means of a suitable additive Wiener noise. The proof of uniqueness relies on the study of related systems of infinite dimensional forward-backward SDEs (FBSDEs). This is a different approach with respect to the well-known method based on the Ito formula and the associated Kolmogorov equation (the so-called Zvonkin transformation or Ito-Tanaka trick). We deal with approximating FBSDEs in which the linear part generates a group of bounded linear operators in H; such approximations depend on the type of SPDEs we are considering. We also prove Lipschitz dependence of solutions from their initial conditions.

Correction to "Well-posedness of semilinear stochastic wave equations with Hölder continuous coefficients''

We prove that semilinear stochastic abstract wave equations, including wave and plate equations, are well-posed in the strong sense with an $α$-Hölder continuous drift coefficient, if $α\in (2/3,1)$. The uniqueness may fail for the corresponding deterministic PDE and well-posedness is restored by adding an external random forcing of white noise type. This shows a kind of regularization by noise for the semilinear wave equation. To prove the result we introduce an approach based on backward stochastic differential equations, differentiability along subspaces and control theoretic results. We stress that the well-posedness holds despite the Markov semigroup associated to the linear stochastic wave equation is not strong Feller.

Stochastic Control Problems with Unbounded Control Operators: solutions through generalized derivatives

This paper deals with a family of stochastic control problems in Hilbert spaces which arises in typical applications (such as boundary control and control of delay equations with delay in the control) and for which is difficult to apply the dynamic programming approach due to the unboudedness of the control operator and to the lack of regularity of the underlying transition semigroup. We introduce a specific concept of partial derivative, designed for this situation, and we develop a method to prove that the associated HJB equation has a solution with enough regularity to find optimal controls in feedback form.

Partial smoothing of delay transition semigroups acting on special functions

It is well known that the transition semigroup of an Ornstein Uhlenbeck process with delay is not strong Feller for small times, so it has no regularizing effects when acting on bounded and continuous functions. In this paper we study regularizing properties of this transition semigroup when acting on special functions of the past trajectory. With this regularizing property, we are able to prove existence and uniqueness of a mild solution for a special class of semilinear Kolmogorov equations; we apply these results to a stochastic optimal control problem.

Semilinear Kolmogorov equations on the space of continuous functions via BSDEs

We deal with a class of semilinear parabolic PDEs on the space of continuous functions that arise, for example, as Kolmogorov equations associated to the infinite-dimensional lifting of path-dependent SDEs. We investigate existence of smooth solutions through their representation via forward-backward stochastic systems, for which we provide the necessary regularity theory. Because of the lack of smoothing properties of the parabolic operators at hand, solutions in general will only share the same regularity as the coefficients of the equation. To conclude we exhibit an application to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations associated to suitable optimal control problems.

A nonlinear Bismut-Elworthy formula for HJB equations with quadratic Hamiltonian in Banach spaces

We consider a Backward Stochastic Differential Equation (BSDE for short) in a Markovian framework for the pair of processes $(Y,Z)$, with generator with quadratic growth with respect to $Z$. The forward equation is an evolution equation in an abstract Banach space. We prove an analogue of the Bismut-Elworty formula when the diffusion operator has a pseudo-inverse not necessarily bounded and when the generator has quadratic growth with respect to $Z$. In particular, our model covers the case of the heat equation in space dimension greater than or equal to 2. We apply these results to solve semilinear Kolmogorov equations for the unknown $v$, with nonlinear term with quadratic growth with respect to $\nabla v$ and final condition only bounded and continuous, and to solve stochastic optimal control problems with quadratic growth.

Stochastic maximum principle for equations with delay: the non-convex case

In this paper we develop necessary conditions for optimality, in the form of the stochastic Pontryagin maximum principle, for controlled equations with pointwise delay in the state and with control dependent noise, in the general case of controls $u \in U$ with $U$ not necessarily convex. The maximum principle is formulated by means of first and second order adjoint BSDEs. We also outline how to deal with control problems with pointwise delay both in the state and in the control.

Stochastic maximum principle for SPDEs with delay

In this paper we develop necessary conditions for optimality, in the form of the Pontryagin maximum principle, for the optimal control problem of a class of infinite dimensional evolution equations with delay in the state. In the cost functional we allow the final cost to depend on the history of the state. To treat such kind of cost functionals we introduce a new form of anticipated backward stochastic differential equations which plays the role of dual equation associated to the control problem.

Stochastic Optimal Control with Delay in the Control: solution through partial smoothing

Stochastic optimal control problems governed by delay equations with delay in the control are usually more difficult to study than the the ones when the delay appears only in the state. This is particularly true when we look at the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation. Indeed, even in the simplified setting (introduced first by Vinter and Kwong for the deterministic case) the HJB equation is an infinite dimensional second order semilinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) that does not satisfy the so-called "structure condition" which substantially means that "the noise enters the system with the control." The absence of such condition, together with the lack of smoothing properties which is a common feature of problems with delay, prevents the use of the known techniques (based on Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs) or on the smoothing properties of the linear part) to prove the existence of regular solutions of this HJB equation and so no results on this direction have been proved till now. In this paper we provide a result on existence of regular solutions of such kind of HJB equations and we use it to solve completely the corresponding control problem finding optimal feedback controls also in the more difficult case of pointwise delay. The main tool used is a partial smoothing property that we prove for the transition semigroup associated to the uncontrolled problem. Such results holds for a specific class of equations and data which arises naturally in many applied problems.

HJB equations in infinite dimensions under weak regularizing properties

We solve in mild sense Hamilton Jacobi Bellman equations, both in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space and in a Banach space, with lipschitz Hamiltonian and lipschitz continuous final condition, and asking only a weak regularizing property on the transition semigroup of the corresponding state equation. The results are applied to solve stochastic optimal control problems; the models we can treat include a controlled stochastic heat equation in space dimension one and with control and noise on a subdomain.

A Bismut Elworthy formula for quadratic BSDEs

We consider a backward stochastic differential equation in a Markovian framework for the pair of processes $(Y,Z)$, with generator with quadratic growth with respect to $Z$. Under non-degeneracy assumptions, we prove an analogue of the well-known Bismut-Elworty formula when the generator has quadratic growth with respect to $Z$. Applications to the solution of a semilinear Kolmogorov equation for the unknown $v$ with nonlinear term with quadratic growth with respect to $\nabla v$ and final condition only bounded and continuous are given, as well as applications to stochastic optimal control problems with quadratic growth.
