Suslin homology via cycles with modulus and applications

We show that for a smooth projective variety $X$ over a field $k$ and a reduced effective Cartier divisor $D \subset X$, the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus $\mathrm{CH}_0(X|D)$ coincides with the Suslin homology $H^S_0(X \setminus D)$ under some necessary conditions on $k$ and $D$. We derive several consequences, and we answer to a question of Barbieri-Viale and Kahn.

On the cohomology of reciprocity sheaves

In this paper we show the existence of an action of Chow correspondences on the cohomology of reciprocity sheaves. In order to do so, we prove a number of structural results, such as a projective bundle formula, a blow-up formula, a Gysin sequence, and the existence of proper pushforward. In this way we recover and generalize analogous statements for the cohomology of Hodge sheaves and Hodge-Witt sheaves. We give several applications of the general theory to problems which have been classically studied. Among these applications, we construct new birational invariants of smooth projective varieties and obstructions to the existence of zero-cycles of degree one from the cohomology of reciprocity sheaves.

Connectivity and Purity for logarithmic motives

The goal of this paper is to extend the work of Voevodsky and Morel on the homotopy $t$-structure on the category of motivic complexes to the context of motives for logarithmic schemes. To do so, we prove an analogue of Morel's connectivity theorem and show a purity statement for $(\mathbf{P}^1, \infty)$-local complexes of sheaves with log transfers. The homotopy $t$-structure on $\mathbf{logDM}^{\textrm{eff}}(k)$ is proved to be compatible with Voevodsky's $t$-structure i.e. we show that the comparison functor $R^{\overline{\square}}ω^*\colon \mathbf{DM}^{\textrm{eff}}(k)\to \mathbf{logDM}^{\textrm{eff}}(k)$ is $t$-exact. The heart of the homotopy $t$-structure on $\mathbf{logDM}^{\textrm{eff}}(k)$ is the Grothendieck abelian category of strictly cube-invariant sheaves with log transfers: we use it to build a new version of the category of reciprocity sheaves in the style of Kahn--Saito--Yamazaki and Rülling.

Zero-cycle groups on algebraic varieties

We compare various groups of 0-cycles on quasi-projective varieties over a field. As applications, we show that for certain singular projective varieties, the Levine-Weibel Chow group of 0-cycles coincides with the corresponding Friedlander-Voevodsky motivic cohomology. We also show that over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus on a smooth projective variety with respect to a reduced divisor coincides with the Suslin homology of the complement of the divisor. We prove several generalizations of the finiteness theorem of Saito and Sato for the Chow group of 0-cycles over $p$-adic fields. We also use these results to deduce a torsion theorem for Suslin homology which extends a result of Bloch to open varieties.

Triangulated categories of logarithmic motives over a field

In this work we develop a theory of motives for logarithmic schemes over fields in the sense of Fontaine, Illusie, and Kato. Our construction is based on the notion of finite log correspondences, the dividing Nisnevich topology on log schemes, and the basic idea of parameterizing homotopies by $\overline{\square}$, i.e. the projective line with respect to its compactifying logarithmic structure at infinity. We show that Hodge cohomology of log schemes is a $\overline{\square}$-invariant theory that is representable in the category of logarithmic motives. Our category is closely related to Voevodsky's category of motives and $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-invariant theories: assuming resolution of singularities, we identify the latter with the full subcategory comprised of $\mathbb{A}^{1}$-local objects in the category of logarithmic motives. Fundamental properties such as $\overline{\square}$-homotopy invariance, Mayer-Vietoris for coverings, the analogs of the Gysin sequence and the Thom space isomorphism as well as a blow-up formula and a projective bundle formula witness the robustness of the setup.

Bloch's formula for 0-cycles with modulus and higher dimensional Class Field Theory

We prove Bloch's formula for the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus on a smooth quasi-projective surface over a field. We use this formula to give a simple proof of the rank one case of a conjecture of Deligne and Drinfeld on lisse $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_{\ell}$-sheaves. This was originally solved by Kerz and Saito in characteristic $\neq 2$.

Spin-orbit torques and magnetotransport properties of $α$-Sn and $β$-Sn heterostructures

Topological insulators have emerged as an important material class for efficient spin-charge interconversion. Most topological insulators considered to date are binary or ternary compounds, with the exception of $α$-Sn. Here we report a comprehensive characterization of the growth, magnetotransport properties, and current-induced spin-orbit torques of $α$-Sn and $β$-Sn-based ferromagnetic heterostructures. We show that $α$-Sn grown with a Bi surfactant on CdTe(001) promotes large spin-orbit torques in a ferromagnetic FeCo layer at room temperature, comparable to Pt, whereas $α$-Sn grown without Bi surfactant and the non-topological phase, $β$-Sn, induce lower torques. The dampinglike and fieldlike spin-orbit torque efficiency in $α$-Sn with Bi are 0.12 and 0.18, respectively. Further, we show that $α$-Sn grown with and without Bi presents a spin Hall-like magnetoresistance comparable to that found in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers. Our work demonstrates direct and efficient charge-to-spin conversion in $α$-Sn ferromagnetic heterostructures, showing that $α$-Sn is a promising material for current-induced magnetization control in spintronic devices.

Semi-purity for cycles with modulus

In this paper, we prove a form of purity property for the $(\mathbb{P}^1, \infty)$-invariant replacement $h_0^{\overline{\square}}(\mathfrak{X})$ of the Yoneda object $\mathbb{Z}_{\rm tr} (\mathfrak{X})$ for a modulus pair $\mathfrak{X}=(\overline{X}, X_\infty)$ over a field $k$, consisting of a smooth projective $k$-scheme and an effective Cartier divisor on it. As application, we prove the analogue in the modulus setting of Voevodsky's fundamental theorem on the homotopy invariance of the cohomology of homotopy invariant sheaves with transfers, based on a main result of "Purity of reciprocity sheaves" arXiv:1704.02442. This plays an essential role in the development of the theory of motives with modulus, and among other things implies the existence of a homotopy $t$-structure on the category $\mathbf{MDM}^{\rm eff}(k)$ of Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki.

Rigidity for relative $0$-cycles

We present a relation between the classical Chow group of relative $0$-cycles on a regular scheme $\mathcal{X}$, projective and flat over an excellent Henselian discrete valuation ring, and the Levine-Weibel Chow group of 0-cycles on the special fiber. We show that these two Chow groups are isomorphic with finite coefficients under extra assumptions. This generalizes a result of Esnault, Kerz and Wittenberg.

A motivic homotopy theory without $\mathbb{A}^1$ invariance

In this paper, we continue the program initiated by Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki by constructing and studying an unstable motivic homotopy category with modulus, extending the Morel-Voevodsky construction from smooth schemes over a field $k$ to certain diagrams of schemes. We present this category as a candidate environment for studying representability problems for non $\mathbb{A}^1$-invariant generalized cohomology theories.

A cycle class map from Chow groups with modulus to relative $K$-theory

Let $\bar{X}$ be a smooth quasi-projective $d$-dimensional variety over a field $k$ and let $D$ be an effective Cartier divisor on it. In this note, we construct cycle class maps from (a variant of) the higher Chow group with modulus of the pair $(\bar{X},D)$ in the range $(d+n, n)$ to the relative $K$-groups $K_n(\bar{X}, D)$ for every $n\geq 0$.

Relative cycles with moduli and regulator maps

Let X be a separated scheme of finite type over a field k and D a non-reduced effective Cartier divisor on it. We attach to the pair (X, D) a cycle complex with modulus, whose homotopy groups - called higher Chow groups with modulus - generalize additive higher Chow groups of Bloch-Esnault, Rülling, Park and Krishna-Levine, and that sheafified on $X_{Zar}$ gives a candidate definition for a relative motivic complex of the pair, that we compute in weight 1. When X is smooth over k and D is such that $D_{red}$ is a normal crossing divisor, we construct a fundamental class in the cohomology of relative differentials for a cycle satisfying the modulus condition, refining El-Zein's explicit construction. This is used to define a natural regulator map from the relative motivic complex of (X,D) to the relative de Rham complex. When X is defined over $\mathbb{C}$, the same method leads to the construction of a regulator map to a relative version of Deligne cohomology, generalizing Bloch's regulator from higher Chow groups. Finally, when X is moreover connected and proper over $\mathbb{C}$, we use relative Deligne cohomology to define relative intermediate Jacobians with modulus $J^r_{X|D}$ of the pair (X,D). For r= dim X, we show that $J^r_{X|D}$ is the universal regular quotient of the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus.

Zero cycles with modulus and zero cycles on singular varieties

Given a smooth variety $X$ and an effective Cartier divisor $D \subset X$, we show that the cohomological Chow group of 0-cycles on the double of $X$ along $D$ has a canonical decomposition in terms of the Chow group of 0-cycles ${\rm CH}_0(X)$ and the Chow group of 0-cycles with modulus ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$ on $X$. When $X$ is projective, we construct an Albanese variety with modulus and show that this is the universal regular quotient of ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$. As a consequence of the above decomposition, we prove the Roitman torsion theorem for the 0-cycles with modulus. We show that ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$ is torsion-free and there is an injective cycle class map ${\rm CH}_0(X|D) \hookrightarrow K_0(X,D)$ if $X$ is affine. For a smooth affine surface $X$, this is strengthened to show that $K_0(X,D)$ is an extension of ${\rm CH}_1(X|D)$ by ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$.

Torsion zero cycles with modulus on affine varieties

In this note we show that given a smooth affine variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ and an effective (possibly non reduced) Cartier divisor $D$ on it, the Kerz-Saito Chow group of zero cycles with modulus ${\rm CH}_0(X|D)$ is torsion free, except possibly for $p$-torsion if the characteristic of $k$ is $p>0$. This generalizes to the relative setting classical theorems of Rojtman (for $X$ smooth) and of Levine (for $X$ singular). A stronger version of this result, that encompasses $p$-torsion as well, was proven with a different and more sophisticated method by A. Krishna and the author in another paper.

Torsion and divisibility for reciprocity sheaves and 0-cycles with modulus

The notion of modulus is a striking feature of Rosenlicht-Serre's theory of generalized Jacobian varieties of curves. It was carried over to algebraic cycles on general varieties by Bloch-Esnault, Park, Rülling, Krishna-Levine. Recently, Kerz-Saito introduced a notion of Chow group of $0$-cycles with modulus in connection with geometric class field theory with wild ramification for varieties over finite fields. We study the non-homotopy invariant part of the Chow group of $0$-cycles with modulus and show their torsion and divisibility properties. Modulus is being brought to sheaf theory by Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki in their attempt to construct a generalization of Voevodsky-Suslin-Friedlander's theory of homotopy invariant presheaves with transfers. We prove parallel results about torsion and divisibility properties for them.
