Continuous symmetries and charge measurement of boundary operators in holography

We study holographic charge measurement for continuous internal symmetries. Charged boundary operators are characterized by Wilson lines of bulk gauge fields ending on the boundary, while charge measurement is performed using U-shaped defects hanging from the boundary. We derive universal features of this process from a low-energy point of view, and show how the hanging defect picture mimics the thickening regularization of continuous symmetry operators in field theory. Furthermore, we provide explicit top-down realizations in AdS/CFT setups in Type IIB string theory and M-theory, featuring Abelian as well as non-Abelian symmetries. In the case of Type IIB constructions, we analyze the brane dynamics underlying the charge measurement process. Along the way, we also characterize how hanging brane configurations can be regarded as being topological, and demonstrate how tachyon dynamics account for their fusion rules.

Non-Abelian Symmetry Operators from Hanging Branes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

We investigate the holographic realization of topological operators for continuous non-Abelian symmetries in quantum field theories. As a concrete case study, we focus on Type IIB string theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ which admits an $SO(6)$ isometry, dual to the R-symmetry in 4d $N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We argue that symmetry operators for continuous symmetries are generally realized by bound states of D5-branes and KK monopoles hanging from the conformal boundary. Together they account for the contributions to the Gauss' law constraints from the self-dual 5-form flux and the Einstein-Hilbert term respectively. We also demonstrate how the D5-KK bound state measures the representation of the endpoint of Wilson lines constructed by D3-branes.

SymTFT for Continuous Symmetries: Non-linear Realizations and Spontaneous Breaking

It is well known that continuous symmetries of quantum fields can be realized non-linearly, e.g. in the context of sigma models, and can also be spontaneously broken on non-compact spacetimes. In this note we study how these effects are realized in the context of the topological symmetry theory for continuous symmetries. In particular, we explain coset realizations and their higher $p$-form symmetry versions from this perspective, as well as uplifts to higher groups and non-invertible symmetries. Moreover, using a setup with boundaries and corners, we explore spontaneous symmetry breaking scenarios for higher $p$-form symmetries as well as non-Abelian $0$-form symmetries.

A universal W-algebra for N=4 super Yang-Mills

Using bootstrap methods, we provide evidence for the existence of a non-linear W-algebra, denoted $W_\infty^\text{s,s}$, which contains the small N= 4 super Virasoro algebra and features an infinite tower of additional generators, organized in short supersymmetry multiplets. The algebra $W_\infty^\text{s,s}$ has one free parameter, its central charge c. We claim that the simple quotient of $W_\infty^\text{s,s}$ for c= -3(N^2-1) is isomorphic to the vertex operator algebra associated to 4d N=4 $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory. We define a filtration in $W_\infty^\text{s,s}$ and provide evidence that it reproduces the R-filtration, which is crucial to extract 4d SCFT data from the vertex operator algebra. Finally, we present explicit formulae for all the (anti)commutators of the wedge algebra of $ W_\infty^\text{s,s}$.

SymTFTs and Non-Invertible Symmetries of 6d (2,0) SCFTs of Type $D$ from M-theory

We revisit 6d (2,0) SCFTs of type $D_N$ and their realization in M-theory, focusing on absolute variants of these theories and on their global finite 0- and 2-form symmetries. We derive the 7d SymTFT capturing these global symmetries from M-theory, both from the point of view of the low-energy supergravity action on $AdS_7\times \mathbb{RP}^4$ and from M2- and M5-branes giving rise to its topological operators. Along the way, results by Gukov, Hsin, and Pei are extended by keeping track of an additional 7d $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge field, associated to the outer automorphism of the $D_N$ algebra. In particular, we find an interplay of non-invertible symmetries and mixed anomalies for absolute 6d (2,0) $D_{4k}$ SCFTs with $k\ge 1$. We highlight several subtle points related to the non-orientability of $\mathbb{RP}^4$, the half-integral $G_4$-flux that threads it, and the non-commutativity of fluxes. All these also play an essential role in a holographic derivation of the anomaly polynomial of 6d (2,0) $D_N$ SCFTs.

MTC$[M_3, G]$: 3d Topological Order Labeled by Seifert Manifolds

We propose a correspondence between topological order in 2+1d and Seifert three-manifolds together with a choice of ADE gauge group $G$. Topological order in 2+1d is known to be characterized in terms of modular tensor categories (MTCs), and we thus propose a relation between MTCs and Seifert three-manifolds. The correspondence defines for every Seifert manifold and choice of $G$ a fusion category, which we conjecture to be modular whenever the Seifert manifold has trivial first homology group with coefficients in the center of $G$. The construction determines the spins of anyons and their S-matrix, and provides a constructive way to determine the R- and F-symbols from simple building blocks. We explore the possibility that this correspondence provides an alternative classification of MTCs, which is put to the test by realizing all MTCs (unitary or non-unitary) with rank $r\leq 5$ in terms of Seifert manifolds and a choice of Lie group $G$.

SymTFTs for Continuous non-Abelian Symmetries

Topological defects and operators give a far-reaching generalization of symmetries of quantum fields. An auxiliary topological field theory in one dimension higher than the QFT of interest, known as the SymTFT, provides a natural way for capturing such operators. This gives a new perspective on several applications of symmetries, but fails to capture continuous non-Abelian symmetries. The main aim of this work is to fill this gap. Guided by geometric engineering and holography, we recover various known features of representation theory of the non-Abelian symmetry from a SymTFT viewpoint. Central to our approach is a duality between (flat) free Yang-Mills and non-Abelian BF theories. Our results extend naturally to models without supersymmetry.

Aspects of Categorical Symmetries from Branes: SymTFTs and Generalized Charges

Recently it has been observed that branes in geometric engineering and holography have a striking connection with generalized global symmetries. In this paper we argue that branes, in a certain topological limit, not only furnish the symmetry generators, but also encode the so-called Symmetry Topological Field Theory (or SymTFT). For a $d$-dimensional QFT, this is a $(d+1)$-dimensional topological field theory, whose topological defects encode both the symmetry generators (invertible or non-invertible) and the generalized charges. Mathematically, the topological defects form the Drinfeld center of the symmetry category of the QFT. In this paper we derive the SymTFT and the Drinfeld center topological defects directly from branes. Central to the identification of these are Hanany-Witten brane configurations, which encode both topological couplings in the SymTFT and the generalized charges under the symmetries. We exemplify the general analysis with examples of QFTs realized in geometric engineering or holography.

Consistent truncations from the geometry of sphere bundles

In this paper, we present a unified perspective on sphere consistent truncations based on the classical geometric properties of sphere bundles. The backbone of our approach is the global angular form for the sphere. A universal formula for the Kaluza-Klein ansatz of the flux threading the $n$-sphere captures the full nonabelian isometry group $SO(n+1)$ and scalar deformations associated to the coset $SL(n+1,\mathbb R)/SO(n+1)$. In all cases, the scalars enter the ansatz in a shift by an exact form. We find that the latter can be completely fixed by imposing mild conditions, motivated by supersymmetry, on the scalar potential arising from dimensional reduction of the higher dimensional theory. We comment on the role of the global angular form in the derivation of the topological couplings of the lower-dimensional theory, and on how this perspective could provide inroads into the study of consistent truncations with less supersymmetry.

Aspects of Irregular Punctures via Holography

We present new families of $AdS_5$ solutions in M-theory preserving 4d ${\mathcal N = 2}$ supersymmetry. We perform a systematic analysis of holographic observables for these solutions, providing evidence for an interpretation in terms of 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of Argyres-Douglas type, realized in class $\mathcal S$ via a sphere with one irregular, and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions exhibit internal M5-brane sources that correspond to the irregular puncture. For a family of solutions, we identify explicitly the class $\mathcal S$ puncture data and perform a detailed match, including Higgs branch operators. For other families we comment on proposed field theory duals, based on irregular punctures labeled by nested Young tableaux.

M5-branes Probing Flux Backgrounds

We analyze the global symmetries and anomalies of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ field theories that arise from a stack of $N$ M5-branes probing a class of flux backgrounds. These backgrounds consist of a resolved $\mathbb{C}^2 / \mathbb{Z}_k$ singularity fibered over a smooth Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, supported by a non-trivial $G_4$-flux configuration labeled by a collection of $2(k-1)$ flux quanta, $\{N_i\}$. For $k=2$, this setup defines a non-trivial superconformal field theory (SCFT) in the IR, which is holographically dual to an explicit $AdS_5$ solution first described by Gauntlett, Martelli, Sparks, and Waldram. The generalization to $k \geq 3$ is hard to tackle directly within holography. Instead, in this paper we lay the groundwork for a systematic analysis of such a generalization by adopting anomaly inflow methods to identify continuous and discrete global symmetries of the 4d field theories. We also compute the 't Hooft anomalies for continuous symmetries at leading order in the limit of large $N$, $N_i$.

The Geometry of Decoupling Fields

We consider 4d field theories obtained by reducing the 6d (1,0) SCFT of $N$ M5-branes probing a $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ singularity on a Riemann surface with fluxes. We follow two different routes. On the one hand, we consider the integration of the anomaly polynomial of the parent 6d SCFT on the Riemann surface. On the other hand, we perform an anomaly inflow analysis directly from eleven dimensions, from a setup with M5-branes probing a resolved $\mathbb C^2/\mathbb Z_k$ singularity fibered over the Riemann surface. By comparing the 4d anomaly polynomials, we provide a characterization of a class of modes that decouple along the RG flow from six to four dimensions, for generic $N$, $k$, and genus. These modes are identified with the flip fields encountered in the Lagrangian descriptions of these 4d models, when they are available. We show that such fields couple to operators originating from M2-branes wrapping the resolution cycles. This provides a geometric origin of flip fields. They interpolate between the 6d theory in the UV, where the M2-brane operators are projected out, and the 4d theory in the IR, where these M2-brane operators are part of the spectrum.

Non-Invertible Symmetries from Holography and Branes

We propose a systematic approach to deriving symmetry generators of Quantum Field Theories in holography. Central to this are the Gauss law constraints in the Hamiltonian quantization of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs), which are obtained from supergravity. In turn we realize the symmetry generators from world-volume theories of D-branes in holography. Our main focus is on non-invertible symmetries, which have emerged in the past year as a new type of symmetry in $d\geq 4$ QFTs. We exemplify our proposal in the holographic confinement setup, dual to 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Super-Yang Mills. In the brane-picture, the fusion of non-invertible symmetries naturally arises from the Myers effect on D-branes. In turn, their action on line defects is modeled by the Hanany-Witten effect.

M5-brane Sources, Holography, and Argyres-Douglas Theories

We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of $AdS_5$ and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting Stückelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large-$N$ 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality.

Holographic Duals of Argyres-Douglas Theories

We present new $AdS_5$ solutions in 11d supergravity and identify them as the gravity duals of a class of 4d $\mathcal N = 2$ SCFTs of Argyres-Douglas type, engineered by a stack of M5-branes wrapped on a sphere with one irregular puncture and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions feature an internal M5-brane source, which is dual to the irregular puncture. Thanks to a novel Stückelberg mechanism involving an axion originating from the expansion of the M-theory 3-form, one of the isometry generators on the gravity side is not mapped to a continuous symmetry on the SCFT side.

Symmetry TFTs from String Theory

We determine the $d+1$ dimensional topological field theory, which encodes the higher-form symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for $d$-dimensional QFTs obtained by compactifying M-theory on a non-compact space $X$. The resulting theory, which we call the Symmetry TFT, or SymTFT for short, is derived by reducing the topological sector of 11d supergravity on the boundary $\partial X$ of the space $X$. Central to this endeavour is a reformulation of supergravity in terms of differential cohomology, which allows the inclusion of torsion in cohomology of the space $\partial X$, which in turn gives rise to the background fields for discrete (in particular higher-form) symmetries. We apply this framework to 7d super-Yang Mills where $X= \mathbb{C}^2/\Gamma_{ADE}$, as well as the Sasaki-Einstein links of Calabi-Yau three-fold cones that give rise to 5d superconformal field theories. This M-theory analysis is complemented with a IIB 5-brane web approach, where we derive the SymTFTs from the asymptotics of the 5-brane webs. Our methods apply to both Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories, and allow for many generalisations.

Discrete and higher-form symmetries in SCFTs from wrapped M5-branes

We analyze topological mass terms of BF type arising in supersymmetric M-theory compactifications to $AdS_5$. These describe spontaneously broken higher-form gauge symmetries in the bulk. Different choices of boundary conditions for the BF terms yield dual field theories with distinct global discrete symmetries. We discuss in detail these symmetries and their 't Hooft anomalies for 4d $\mathcal N = 1$ SCFTs arising from M5-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface without punctures, including theories from M5-branes at a $\mathbb Z_2$ orbifold singularity. The anomaly polynomial is computed via inflow and contains background fields for discrete global 0-, 1-, and 2-form symmetries and continuous 0-form symmetries, as well as axionic background fields. The latter are properly interpreted in the context of anomalies in the space of coupling constants.

Anomaly Inflow Methods for SCFT Constructions in Type IIB

We extend the anomaly inflow methods developed in M-theory to SCFTs engineered via D3-branes in type IIB. We show that the 't Hooft anomalies of such SCFTs can be computed systematically from their geometric definition. Our procedure is tested in several 4d examples and applied to 2d theories obtained by wrapping D3-branes on a Riemann surface. In particular, we show how to analyze half-BPS regular punctures for 4d $\mathcal N = 4$ SYM on a Riemann surface. We discuss generalizations of this formalism to type IIB configurations with $F_3$, $H_3$ fluxes, as well as to F-theory setups.
