Interference effects in gluon-fusion Higgs boson production

In this contribution we summarize recent progress in higher-order computations of signal-background interference effects in Higgs boson production via gluon fusion. The focus is on the resonance region, where interference terms are most significant relative to the pure signal contribution when the Higgs boson decay is loop-induced. We present results for the well-studied $gg \to H \to γγ$ process and for the rare $gg \to H \to Zγ$ mode. In both cases, the interference is destructive, reducing the resonant Higgs boson production rate by about 1.6\% in the diphoton channel and by roughly 3\% in the $Zγ$ decay mode.

Two-Loop Spacelike Splitting Amplitudes in Full-Color QCD

The study of QCD scattering amplitudes in the collinear regime provides crucial insight into the factorization properties of hadronic cross sections. In this paper, we present the first complete results for two-loop spacelike splitting amplitudes in full-color QCD, in all partonic channels and helicity configurations. We confirm the universality of a class of contributions already found in N=4 super Yang--Mills (sYM) theory, and identify previously unknown sources of collinear factorization-violating (CFV) effects. Consistent with recent observations in N=4 sYM, all CFV contributions cancel in color-summed squared amplitudes, implying the universality of single-parton collinear factorization for jet cross sections at third order in QCD.

Precise Predictions for Event Shapes in Diphoton Production at the LHC

Photon pair production is an important benchmark process at the LHC, entering Higgs boson studies and new physics searches. It has been measured to high accuracy, allowing for detailed studies of event shapes in diphoton final states. To enable precision physics with diphoton event shapes, we compute the second-order QCD corrections, ${\cal O} (α_s^3)$, to them and study their phenomenological impact.

Investigating the universality of five-point QCD scattering amplitudes at high energy

We investigate $2 \to 3$ QCD scattering amplitudes in multi-Regge kinematics, i.e. where the final partons are strongly ordered in rapidity. In this regime amplitudes exhibit intriguing factorisation properties which can be understood in terms of effective degrees of freedom called \emph{reggeons}. Working within the Balitsky/JIMWLK framework, we predict these amplitudes for the first time to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, and compare against the limit of QCD scattering amplitudes in full colour and kinematics. We find that the latter can be described in terms of universal objects, and that the apparent non-universality arising at NNLL comes from well-defined and under-control contributions that we can predict. Thanks to this observation, we extract for the first time the universal vertex that controls the emission of the central-rapidity gluon, both in QCD and $N = 4$ super Yang-Mills.

Interference Effects in $\mathbf{gg \to H \to Z γ}$ Beyond Leading Order

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC have recently announced evidence for the rare Higgs boson decay into a $Z$ boson and a photon. We analyze the interference between the process $gg\! \to \! H \! \to \! Z γ$ induced by loops of heavy particles, which is by far the dominant contribution to the signal, and the continuum $gg \to Z γ$ QCD background process mediated by light quark loops. This interference modifies the event yield, the resonance line-shape and the apparent mass of the Higgs boson. We calculate the radiative corrections to this interference beyond the leading-order approximation in perturbative QCD and find that, while differing numerically from the corresponding effects on the more studied $gg \! \to \! γγ$ signal, they are generally rather small. As such, they do not impact significantly the interpretation of the present measurements of the $H \to Z γ$ decay mode.

One loop QCD corrections to $gg \to t\overline{t}H$ at $\mathcal{O}(ε^2)$

We compute the one-loop corrections to \tth up to order $\mathcal{O}(ε^2)$ in the dimensional regularization parameter. We apply the projector method to compute polarized amplitudes, which generalize massless helicity amplitudes to the massive case. We employ a semi-numerical strategy to evaluate the scattering amplitudes. We express the form factors through scalar integrals analytically, and obtain separately integration by parts reduction identities in compact form. We integrate numerically the corresponding master integrals with an enhanced implementation of the Auxiliary Mass Flow algorithm. Using a numerical fit method, we concatenate the analytic and the numeric results, to obtain fast and reliable evaluation of the scattering amplitude. This approach improves numerical stability and evaluation time. Our results are implemented in the \texttt{Mathematica} package \texttt{TTH}.

Five-Parton Scattering in QCD at Two Loops

We compute all helicity amplitudes for the scattering of five partons in two-loop QCD in all the relevant flavor configurations, retaining all contributing color structures. We employ tensor projection to obtain helicity amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme starting from a set of primitive amplitudes. Our analytic results are expressed in terms of massless pentagon functions, and are easy to evaluate numerically. These amplitudes provide important input to investigations of collinear-factorization breaking and to studies of the multi-Regge kinematics regime.

Signal-background interference effects in Higgs-mediated diphoton production beyond NLO

In this paper we consider signal-background interference effects in Higgs-mediated diphoton production at the LHC. After reviewing earlier works that show how to use these effects to constrain the Higgs boson total decay width, we provide predictions beyond NLO accuracy for the interference and related observables, and study the impact of QCD radiative corrections on the Higgs width determination. In particular, we use the so-called soft-virtual approximation to estimate interference effects at NNLO in QCD. The inclusion of these effects reduce the NNLO prediction for the total Higgs cross-section in the diphoton channel by about 1.7%. We study in detail the impact of QCD corrections on the Higgs-boson line-shape and its implications for the Higgs width extraction. Assuming an experimental resolution of about 150~MeV on interference-induced modifications of the Higgs-boson line-shape, our NNLO analysis shows that one could constrain the Higgs-boson total width to about 10-20 times its Standard Model value.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to dilepton production at the LHC in the high invariant mass region

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the neutral-current Drell-Yan production of a pair of massless leptons in the high invariant mass region. Our computation is fully differential with respect to the final state particles. At relatively low values of the dilepton invariant mass, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 200$ GeV, we find unexpectedly large mixed QCD-electroweak corrections at the level of -1%. At higher invariant masses, $m_{\ell \ell} \sim 1$ TeV, we observe that these corrections can be well approximated by the product of QCD and electroweak corrections. Hence, thanks to the well-known Sudakov enhancement of the latter, they increase at large invariant mass and reach e.g. -3% at $m_{\ell \ell} = 3$ TeV. Finally, we note that the inclusion of mixed corrections reduces the theoretical uncertainty related to the choice of electroweak input parameters to below the percent level.

The analytical expressions of the mixed QCD-EW corrections to on-shell Z boson inclusive production cross section at hadron colliders are presented, together with computational details. The results are given in terms of polylogarithmic functions and elliptic integrals. The impact on the prediction of the Z boson production total cross section is discussed, comparing different proton parton density sets.

Two-loop helicity amplitudes for diphoton plus jet production in full color

We present the complete two-loop corrections in massless QCD for the production of two photons and a jet, taking into account all color structures. In particular, we analytically compute all two-loop helicity amplitudes for the quark-antiquark, quark-gluon, and antiquark-gluon channel, and check them with an independent calculation of the polarization-summed interference with the tree amplitude. This is the first time that two-loop QCD corrections to a five-point scattering process have been computed beyond the leading-color approximation for all helicity configurations.

Two-loop leading colour QCD corrections to $q \bar{q} \to γγg$ and $q g \to γγq$

We present the leading colour and light fermionic planar two-loop corrections for the production of two photons and a jet in the quark-antiquark and quark-gluon channels. In particular, we compute the interference of the two-loop amplitudes with the corresponding tree level ones, summed over colours and polarisations. Our calculation uses the latest advancements in the algorithms for integration-by-parts reduction and multivariate partial fraction decomposition to produce compact and easy-to-use results. We have implemented our results in an efficient C++ numerical code. We also provide their analytic expressions in Mathematica format.

Estimating the impact of mixed QCD-electroweak corrections on the $W$-mass determination at the LHC

We study the impact of the recently computed mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at the LHC on the value of the $W$ mass extracted from the transverse momentum distribution of charged leptons from $W$ decays. Using the average lepton transverse momenta in $W$ and $Z$ decays as simplified observables for the determination of the $W$ mass, we estimate that mixed QCD-electroweak corrections can shift the extracted value of the $W$ mass by up to ${\cal O}(20)~{\rm MeV}$, depending on the kinematic cuts employed to define fiducial cross sections for $Z$ and $W$ production. Since the target precision of the $W$-mass measurement at the LHC is ${\cal O}(10)~{\rm MeV}$, our results emphasize the need for fully-differential computations of mixed QCD-electroweak corrections and a careful analysis of their potential impact on the determination of the $W$ mass.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to W-boson production in hadron collisions

We compute mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the fully-differential production of an on-shell $W$ boson. Decays of $W$ bosons to lepton pairs are included in the leading order approximation. The required two-loop virtual corrections are computed analytically for arbitrary values of the electroweak gauge boson masses. Analytic results for integrated subtraction terms are obtained within a soft-collinear subtraction scheme optimized to accommodate the structural simplicity of infra-red singularities of mixed QCD-electroweak contributions. Numerical results for mixed corrections to the fiducial cross section of $pp \to W^+ \to l^+ ν$ and selected kinematic distributions in this process are presented.

NNLO QCD$\times$EW corrections to on-shell $Z$ production

We present the first analytical results for the ${\cal O}(αα_s)$ corrections to the total cross section for the inclusive production of an on-shell $Z$ boson at hadron colliders. We include the complete set of contributions, with photonic and massive weak gauge boson effects, which have been computed in analytical form and expressed in terms of polylogarithmic and elliptic integrals. We present numerical results, relevant for the precision studies at the LHC. These corrections increase the accuracy of the predictions and contribute to the reduction of the QCD component of the theoretical uncertainty.

Mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to on-shell Z production at the LHC

We present the first complete calculation of mixed QCD-electroweak corrections to the production of on-shell $Z$ bosons in hadron collisions and their decays to massless charged leptons. Our computation is fully differential with respect to final state QCD partons and resolved photons, allowing us to compute any infra-red safe observable pertinent to the $pp \to Z \to l^+ l^-$ process in the approximation that the $Z$ boson is on shell. Although mixed QCD-electroweak corrections are small, at about the per mill level, we observe that the interplay between QCD-QED and QCD-weak contributions is subtle and observable-dependent. It is therefore not possible to avoid computing one or the other if ${\cal O}(α_{EW} α_s)$ precision is desired.

NNLO mixed EW-QCD corrections to single vector boson production

We outline the computational details to obtain mixed EW-QCD corrections to on-shell production of a single vector boson at the LHC at two-loop level. We use the method of differential equation to obtain the pure virtual, real-virtual and double-real master integrals. Finally, we obtain the ${\cal O}(αα_s)$ corrections to the total partonic cross section of the process $q \bar{q} \rightarrow Z + X$.

NLO QCD predictions for $t\bar{t}b\bar{b}$ production in association with a light jet at the LHC

Theoretical predictions for ttbb production are of crucial importance for ttH measurements in the H->bb channel at the LHC. To address the large uncertainties associated with the modelling of extra QCD radiation in ttbb events, in this paper we present a calculation of pp->ttbbj at NLO QCD. The behaviour of NLO corrections is analysed in a variety of observables, and to assess theoretical uncertainties we use factor-two rescalings as well as different dynamic scales. In this context, we propose a systematic alignment of dynamic scales that makes it possible to disentangle normalisation and shape uncertainties in a transparent way. Scale uncertainties at NLO are typically at the level of 20-30% in fiducial cross sections, and below 10% for the shapes of distributions. The kinematics of QCD radiation is investigated in detail, including the effects of its recoil on the objects of the ttbb system. In particular, we discuss various azimuthal correlations that allow one to charaterise the QCD recoil pattern in a precise and transparent way. In general, the calculation at hand provides a variety of precise benchmarks that can be used to validate the modelling of QCD radiation in ttbb generators. Moreover, as we will argue, pp->ttbbj at NLO entails information that can be used to gain insights into the perturbative convergence of the inclusive ttbb cross section beyond NLO. Based on this idea, we address the issue of the large NLO K-factor observed in the ttbb cross section, and we provide evidence that supports the reduction of this K-factor through a mild adjustment of the QCD scales that are conventionally used for this process. The presented 2->5 NLO calculations have been carried out using OpenLoops 2 in combination with Sherpa and Munich.
